Chapter 2

"So where are we going?" the young elf asked. "What are we going to see?" Both of the twins grinned.

"You'll just have to wait and see," Elrohir replied. They walked for another five minutes or so, until they stopped. Legolas looked up to see the biggest tree he'd ever seen. His mouth opened as he stared at it in amazement.

"Wowwww," the young prince said. "It's HUGE!" A enormous grin came to his face as he rushed over to the large tree. Mirkwood had some pretty big tree's, but none as big as this. The twins both laughed at his excitement. They found the little elfling pretty adorable.

"Yeah, it is huge," Elrohir replied. Legolas turned to him, eyes wide in the excitement he was feeling.

"Can I climb it?" he asked. They weren't his father or his guardian or anything, but they were young adult elves. He thought he should ask. They reminded him of his brother Tanithil, and not just because they looked to be the same age. As far as he knew, they had the same general personality. He liked them.

"Hmm.. I don't know, should we let him climb the tree Elrohir?"

"I don't know Elladan, it does seem a tad bit dangerous," Elrohir replied in a fake nervous tone.

"He seems strong, I'm sure he can handle it," Elladan said in a playful tone. The twins grinned before helping Legolas up the tree. The young prince smiled and laughed as he climbed over several branches. They were all big enough that he needn't worry about falling, and the branches were low enough that it was safe to climb. After a couple of minutes, Legolas sat down on one of the branches, swinging his legs. He looked ahead of him. Rivendell looked even more beautiful up here on this branch. Though he was too young to speak with the trees yet, he could still sense what they were feeling. He could tell that this tree he was sitting in was happy he was here.

Legolas stayed up there in the huge tree for a while, before finally climbing down. Once back at the ground, he looked at the two twins. Elladan was still clutching his wrist, a pained expression on his face. The young prince looked at him in concern.

"What's wrong with your arm?" he asked, sitting down where they were kneeling. Elladan smiled slightly, thinking it was kind of the prince to be concerned.

"I just hurt it on our hunting trip. I will be fine, though my father will be after my head if I keep stalling going to the healers…"

Legolas gave a nod. "We should go there then. Before you get more hurt." The elfling stood up and grabbed Elladan's good arm to help him up too. The three of them started walking back inside.

When they were back inside, the twins and Legolas turned their heads to see Thranduil and Elrond walking their way. Both were smiling, though Thranduil's, once again, was more faint. "Ah, I see you have already met my sons," Lord Elrond said to Legolas. He turned his attention to the king. "These are Elladan and Elrohir." In response, the elven king gave a small nod. The Lord of Rivendell then frowned as he saw the way Elladan was holding his arm. "What happened?" he demanded.

"He tripped," Elrohir answered for his twin. Elladan shot a glare at him.

"It was his fault that I tripped," he grumbled.

"Is not!"

"Yes it was you insufferable little-"

Elrond cleared his throat. No matter how old his sons were, they never seemed to grow up. He sometimes found their bickering slightly amusing, but there were times, like this, when it was inappropriate. The twins immediately looked at their father, seeing the look on is face. Elrond looked back at the king. "Dinner will be in an hour. We hope to see you then." He then took Elladan by his good arm, earning a surprised yelp from him, and walked off to the healers ward. Elrohir awkwardly stood where he was for a minute before going off to follower his brother and father. Before he did though, he smiled and waved at Legolas, hoping he would have time to play with the little elfling later.

After the five elves had dinner, the sky was darkening. Legolas began to worry a little. This would be his first night away from Mirkwood. The thought made him a little homesick.

Thranduil bid his young son a good night's rest before retiring to his own room. Legolas stared up at the ceiling. His room here was so different than his own room back at home. He then stood up out of his bed and walked over to his window. He opened it, wanting to feel the comfort of the light night breeze. He rested his arms on the window seal. He liked it here but he really did wish he was home..

Legolas then got an idea. He noticed a tree right by his window. Carefully, he climbed out of the window and onto the tree. There he sat in a large branch. Even though he was away from home, the tree brought him comfort. He leaned against the trunk as the young elfling looked up at the sky. The stars were shining brightly tonight. He liked it. He was looking at the stars for a while before exhaustion took over him. The young elf yawned before drifting off to sleep.

"Hush! Someone will hear us!"

"I shouldn't even be out here though. Adar wanted me to spend the night in the healing ward. I don't see *why* though. It's just a broken wrist for crying out loud!"

"Pe-charnas! Don't cry out loud or we will get found for sure!"

Legolas woke up, hearing voices. They sounded familiar, but he wasn't sure why. And what was he doing in a tree instead of his bed at the palace? The young prince frowned in confusion before he remembered that he was no longer in Mirkwood. He was in Rivendell. And he then recognized the voices to belong to the twins.

The elfling slid down to a lower branch, observing the two other elves, wondering what they were doing. He didn't want to call out to them though, in fear they would scold him for being out of bed.

Then again, they weren't supposed to be out here either.

Elladan and Elrohir stopped in their path, hearing a rustling in the leaves of a tree. "Is someone there?" Elrohir asked. No reply. Then, a second later, Legolas made himself visible within the tree.

"I am.." he said in a quiet tone, sure he was going to be in trouble. "I know I should be in bed.. But I couldn't sleep.."

Both of the twins gave a kind smile at the prince. "Yeah? We couldn't sleep either. And don't worry- we aren't really supposed to be here either, so there's no way we'll tell on you," Elladan added, seeing the worried look on his face.

Legolas immediately smiled. Since the tree wasn't too tall, he got down it easily, and walked over to the older elves.

"So how come you couldn't sleep?" Elrohir asked as the three of them walked over to a patch of grass and sat down. A slight frown came to Legolas' face.

"I've never spent the night away from the palace before.. I miss home.." The young prince picked a blade of grass from the ground and then let it go as a calm breeze blew it away.

The twins gave a understanding nod. "We understand that feeling. On our first overnight trip, Elrohir was practically crying his head off from being homesick," Elladan said. This earned a glare from Elrohir and a laugh from Legolas.

"Was not.." Elrohir muttered under his breath, making Legolas laugh harder, and causing Elladan to laugh too. "Anyway, tell us: what is the palace of Mirkwood like?"

The smile returned as he thought of home. "It's really big! The inside is carved into a mountain and its huge! And right outside there's a really nice river." The twins grinned. Since Legolas was so young, his description wasn't that descriptive, but they liked to hear him try.

"It sounds amazing," Elladan said. "I'd like to see it one day."

Elrohir nodded. "Me too. Maybe we can visit sometime."

Legolas grinned. "Yeah! It would be fun! You two should visit!" He yawned. The twins glanced at each other before looking back at the young prince. Suddenly, they both laid down on the grass, looking up at the beautiful night sky. "What are you doing?" Legolas asked.

Elrohir pointed at the sky. "We're looking at the stars. Care to join us?" Legolas nodded, also laying down and staring up at the star filled sky.

"I like the stars," the elfling said. The twins started pointing out constellations. Legolas had fun seeing the imaginary pictures the stars made through the constellations. After a while, Elladan glanced over at Legolas and realized the young prince had fallen asleep. He smiled and tapped Elrohir on the shoulder. Together, they gently picked him up and brought him back to his room. As much as they would have liked for him to remain outside where he loved it, they knew his father wouldn't be pleased to find his son sleeping outside. They couldn't wait though, to talk to Legolas more tomorrow.
