Sixth Chapter of this story
She stood and looked out the window. A heavy sigh escaped her lips just before the door opened behind her. She turned around and forced a smile to her lips.
"Hey Dick" she said and he entered the room and walked over to her.
"Hey Carmen… are you okay?" he asked and looked at her "You're using that fake smile again…"
"My world's at war Dick… my people's at war…" she said and he wrapped his arms around her.
"there are wars on Earth all the time… so why's this so different?" he asked.
"I'm their ruler… I should have been able to do something…" she replied and buried her face in his chest #but this is not what troubles me" she thought to herself.
"Carmen… it's okay, you're here now, and you have a plan to stop this, right?" he said, trying to cheer her up.
"Yeah… you're right" she said and looked up at him "how's Babs?" she asked and he smiled.
"She's sleeping, but she'll be fine"
"Good… I think I'll have someone try and read her mind while she's asleep…" she said and looked down.
"That sounds a bit… over the top" he said and she looked up at him.
"It's easier to access ones sub conscious while you're sleeping. Of course they won't pry through her private thoughts; they'll only try to find out information about anything Ethan might have assigned to her. And make sure she's not mentally programmed to do anything while here" she said and got a distant look in her eyes for a few seconds.
"Uh, Carmen? You okay there?" he asked and she blinked a few times.
"One of our more… inexperienced mind readers accidently went through some of her memories… Seven minutes in heaven?" she said with a playful smile.
"What're you…?" he said and then his eyes widened "I swear, it means nothing to me anymore!" he said and she giggled.
"Dick, dude, its okay! I was on Dania at the time, and that's almost an entire galaxy away, so I forgive you" she pushed herself away from him "But your birthday 2015? Not too happy with that one"
"How much did she get from Babs's memories?" Dick asked and Carmen laughed.
"Babs is… Flexible, isn't she?" she said and ran out the room.
"Carmen! Come on, let me explain!" Nightwing said and ran after her.
#Keep up the play Carmen# she thought to herself when Nightwing caught her from behind.
"Please don't be mad, I beg of you"
"Dude, I already knew!" she turned around and giggled "I did meet up with you last year, remember? Plus, we've been living together for so long! I sneaked a peak once in a while" she said and he sighed.
"Listen…. I'm really, really, really sorry" he said and looked into her eyes.
"It's okay Dick, I love you. And I was in prison at that time. Last year, I told you it was okay right? So don't worry" she said and kissed his cheek.
"I know… I know, but it still feels wrong…" he said and she put her hand on his cheek.
"It's okay" she said and he smiled.
"I love you Carmen" he said and kissed her lips. She kissed back, thinking the whole thing was bittersweet.
#then why did you say those words back at the lake?# she thought to herself. He deepened the kiss a bit, and she let herself get carried away. He stopped the kiss and put their foreheads together.
"I love you, I really love you, and don't you ever doubt that" he said and kissed her forehead.
"Okay" she replied, not knowing what else to say. A small cough got their attention and Carmen noticed it was one of the Mind readers. She looked at Nightwing "I have to go" she said and he nodded. She walked away and thought of the words he'd told her on the Moon Festival.
#I don't think we should date anymore# she clenched her fists and got an angry look in her face. The Mind Reader looked at her and got slightly scared.
"Did you discover anything?" Carmen asked the Mind reader as they walked and she nodded.
"yes, it would seem that Ethan is using the 'team' to try and kidnap the Nightwing, the Robin and the Martian. They were brainwashed to believe our Da'jeen has gone mad and has brainwashed you into helping her"
"What of his location?"
"We didn't get much. They were taken there by means of transportation, they could not see anything as they were going, but could clearly see they were underground when they got out. Then they were subjected to the brainwashing. That's all we were able to figure out before she entered too light a plane of sleeping"
"It's more than enough. We now have confirmation that they were underground, like Batgirl stated"
"We apologize for the inconvenience of our inexperienced one! She did not fully understand the assignment, and accidently linked to you"
"It's alright, she didn't show my anything new" she said.
Jackie looked around the forest in disguise. She'd been assigned to the team that was to find out if there was a way to locate Ethan's hideout.
#Aqualin, have you found anything yet?# Miss Martian's voice sounded in head.
#no, nothing yet… you?#
#Nothing here either# Miss Martian replied with a sad tone.
#You worried about Garfield?# Jackie asked and looked around a little more.
#I am… I mean, this is an alien planet, and he's been kidnapped… Oh I just hope he's alright!# she said and Jackie stopped up.
#don't worry, Ethan needs him to get to us, and even so he's-# she stopped mid sentence and stared at a Ha'jo who looked at her directly.
#Aqualin? Aqualin, did you find something?# Miss Martian asked and Jackie nodded to herself, even though she knew M'Gann couldn't see it. She turned visible.
#A green Ha'jo…# she said and looked at it intensely #And Ha'jo's, are never green# the small creature now looked at her too. It looked curious and then it twitched, like something in it clicked #I think I just found Beast Boy# she said and the Ha'jo jumped down from the tree and looked at her still.
"Beast boy… is that you?" she asked and the Ha'jo started growing into the monkey looking boy. Jackie could feel he was wary of what she would do #Miss Martian, I just found Beast boy, but be careful if you come… He's brainwashed#
#Jackie, Jackie you have to listen to me" Beas boy said and stepped closer to her carefully "Your mother's brainwashed you, I'm not your enemy" he said and Jackie sighed.
"I know that" she took another step closer to him.
"You know you're brainwashed?" he asked a little confused.
"No, that I'm not your enemy. Beast Boy, you're the brainwashed one" she said and reached for something in one of her pockets. He didn't notice this.
"No I'm not brainwashed! That guy… uh… Ethan! He said your mom had gone mental and brainwashed half the population!" he took a step back from her and she took out a small light blue pill.
"Ethan lies, he started the rebellion!" she said and flung the pill which exploded right in front of Beast Boy, releasing a light blue gas. He inhaled it and started coughing badly.
"What *cough* was that!" he yelled and suddenly felt dizzy.
"Sleeping gas, perfectly harmless to people from Dania" she said and walked closer to him. He fell forward into her arms and she caught him.
"Garfield!" She heard Miss Martian yell and looked in the direction of her voice.
"He's okay" Jackie said and Miss Martian looked at him "I just made him fall asleep"
"Good. God I've been so worried about him" Miss Martian said and Jackie handed him over.
#We have one of the team members, we'll head back now# Jackie said through her link made by M'Gann.
#Confirmed princess# someone said and Jackie nodded to Miss Martian.
"He'll be alright, don't worry" Jackie said and she sighed.
"I know"
"So what's up with Carmen these days?" Robin asked Nightwing.
"I don't know" he said and sighed "she seems… distracted or something"
"This whole thing must be stressing for her" Batgirl said. She'd been informed about the current situation "maybe it has something to do with the way you've been behaving?" she said and he sighed.
"I'm having a really tough time with this Babs…" he replied and Robin looked from one to the other.
"Does anyone want to fill me in on what's going on here?" he asked.
"Dick's been planning something really special for Carmen, but he's too chicken to do anything about it" she said with a smile "mostly because of how he behaved while she was in Belle Reve" she said.
"What do you… oh that… but wait, what is it that you want?" Robin asked and looked at Nightwing.
"I don't want to be her boyfriend anymore" he said and leaned forward.
