The rest of my day was boring compared to the first two hours of it. Lunch came around and I hurried to get to the cafeteria knowing that Kate was probably looking for me.
I scanned the room and I saw no sign of Kate. Quickly, I walked to our usual table and sat on one of the chairs. I pulled out my lunch along with my copy of Henry V.
I nibbled on some baby carrots, dipping it on some ranch every now and then when I hear someone say, "Having fun there making out with a poor baby carrot?"
Christian.
"Can I sit here?" He asks.
Still shocked by his statement, I just glare at him with the carrot still in my mouth.
"No, you-" I said, right before he interrupts me.
"I'm sitting here." He says, looking quite amused. "Where's your friends? Or do you not have any?" He smirks.
"I have friends and that seat is taken." I snap at him.
He grins and tells me, "I'm sure they won't mind me sitting here."
I see Kate walking towards our table but she's too preoccupied by three other students asking her a bunch of questions about this and that.
How is she walking without looking at where she's going? People are handing her papers, she's signing and checking things. She's like a celebrity, being bombarded by paparazzi. How can she look like she's walking down the runway when students are hovering over her?
She reaches for the seat that Christian is sitting on, not realizing that someone else was sitting on her usual chair. When she couldn't pull the chair out, she looks at me, then at the seat.
She raises a brow and says, "Oh, who's this?"
Christian turns around and Kate's immediate reaction was priceless.
"Hi, I'm Christian." He says, smiling very politely at her.
"Hello, I'm Kate. I'm sorry I didn't know where I was going and I- you know what, never mind." She walks over to the sit on my other side, putting me in between Christian and herself.
"Okay, I need to eat. I can't look at another layout. You guys should eat. I'll look at your pages tomorrow morning. Make sure that your spacing are even or I swear to god, I will kick you out of yearbook," she snapped. And just like that, the students who were bombarding Kate with questions disappeared.
"Easy there, Kate" I whispered.
She took a deep breath and sighed, "So...Christian?" She looks at me then to the hot boy that is sitting on my other side, "how do you know Ana? And how come I've never seen you here before?"
Oh dear, here comes the infamous Kate Inquisition.
"I just transferred. And Ana here," he looks at me and grins, "was my first...friend." He paused before saying friend, making me wonder if he even knows what a friend is.
"Oh that's nice," she smiles at me like she's trying to tell me something.
"What were you talking about this morning?" I asked Kate hoping that she'll get distracted.
"Forget about it. I changed my topic for the article. Mr. Shields wanted it to be more about the seniors and I couldn't really find anyone who could have a good and juicy story." She says, looking distracted. "Where's Brian?"
"I don't know, he's your boyfriend." I replied.
Speak of the devil...
"Hey Kate," he winks at her and gives her a kiss.
He looks at me and yells, "Waddup, Steele?!" He raised his hand as to give me a high five when he noticed Christian. "Well, well, well...who's this fella? Your Romeo?"
I roll my eyes at him. "That's Christian, he's new."
"Hey man, how's it going?!" He tries to give Christian a 'bro hug' and Christian just looked uncomfortable.
"Ana, are you still coming over to my house today?" Kate asks. I honestly don't remember making plans with her... "Remember? You said you would hang out with Brian and I?" She raises her brows at me like I'm supposed to be getting some sort of a clue.
I knew where she was going with this and I when it hit me I said, "No...?"
Kate turns to Christian, "Hey, you! You want to hang out with us today after school?"
"Sure." He says, not showing any expression.
"Cool! Look for Ana after school, she'll just drive you to my house or you can drive her or whatever, you two can figure it out." Kate is too excited... If I didn't know her any better, I wouldn't have known she was planning something. "Brian and I have to go. I'll see you two at my house right after school, okay? Okay."
And just like that, Christian and I were left at the usually loud table.
"You don't have a boyfriend?" Christian asks.
"No." I tell him.
He cocks his head to one side and says, "Why not?"
I look down so that he doesn't see my expression, "No one has really been interested."
"Don't look down. I like to see your face." He tells me, putting his hands under my chin and pulling my face up.
Damn it, what is he doing.
For a moment I thought we were going to kiss. I stared at his gray eyes, waiting for him to do something, anything, but he just kept staring back at me. Then his expression changed, like he remembered something awful.
The bell rings, telling us that lunch was over. I pulled away from his hand and packed my things.
"I'll be by the main office, by the flagpole at the parking lot after school. If you're not there by 3:15, I'm leaving without you. See you later." I told him as I walked away.
