Chapter Three
Hearing the main door to the Salvatore home shut, Damon sighed into his mug while resting further into the arm chair he currently sat on.
"Back from Elena's so soon?" Damon asked while sipping the last bit of the blood that was left in his mug.
Eyeing his younger brother as he froze slightly at his words only caused Damon's eyes to narrow.
Turning around, Stefan took in the fact that Damon was behind him. He couldn't control the sense of sudden unknown guilt that started to form at the pit of his stomach at the expression bouncing off the older Salvatore. Stefan felt bad for Damon. He really did. He didn't like it when history always seemed to repeat itself.
But Stefan couldn't help it. He loved Elena.
Tensing slightly, Stefan eyed Damon curiously before speaking up. "Damon about Elena—"
"Save the sympathy Stefan, I don't need it," Damon stated as he cut Stefan off. Lazily getting off the chair that he was resting on, he slowly made his way towards his quiet brother. Damon continued to speak, his voice almost song-like, "Elena chose you Stefan. I've built a bridge, and I've gotten over it. I suggest you do the same."
Stefan cocked his head to the side as he eyed his brother's extremely bored expression. "You're not over it Damon. You love her. And that's one thing you aren't going to forget and move on from in just one night."
Eyes softening slightly, Damon tried his best in keeping his composure. Jaw clenching, Damon spoke through gritted teeth, "Well I guess time will tell now, wouldn't it brother?"
Stefan nodded. "I guess so."
Quickly allowing a soft grin to plaster his tense face, Damon pointed at Stefan's chest, his conversation with Caroline earlier playing at his mind.
"Well, I guess we should start to suit up, shouldn't we?" Damon asked looking back at his brother who seemed slightly confused. Grinning slightly, Damon continued, "You know, wouldn't want to miss tonight's dance."
Damon watched as Stefan's eyes narrowed at him, "You're going?" he asked slightly confused and concerned about the way Damon was acting. As if everything was alright. But for some reason that slightly scared him as well, Damon was up to something.
"Mhm," Damon replied, grin wide, "See you and Elena there." Damon added slightly emphasized before slowly walking past an expressionless Stefan.
Sighing in content when looking over the dance's arrangements, Caroline was just happy about the fact that everything was done. Now it was time for her to go back home so that she could get ready for the dance. Feeling a light nudge at her side Caroline smiled down at her friend, "Thanks for helping Elena," Caroline said nudging Elena back.
Both turning to walk away from the now fully decorated gym, Caroline couldn't help but let her curiosity get the best of her. "So, how was last night?" Caroline asked a huge teasing grin plastered on her face. Rolling her eyes at the blonde's expression, Elena giggled, "It wasn't like that. We didn't… um… you know—"
"Have sex?" Caroline asked finishing up what Elena was struggling to say. Laughing out loud at the sudden glare Elena shot her way, Caroline shrugged, "What? It's not like you guys haven't had it before?"
Laughing at the redness that formed at Elena's cheeks, Caroline smiled, "Okay, so if you didn't have sex then what did you two do?"
Elena shrugged while replying, "We talked about a lot of things. Then we sort of just slept together— meaning in each other's arms," Elena quickly added, giggling slightly.
Caroline smiled at her friend, she was happy for Elena. Really happy. But the feeling at her stomach made her sick to her stomach when realizing just how many times either Stefan or Damon were hurt during the continuous mixed emotions Elena set out. She had both of them at the palm of her hand and yet she'd tear them apart whenever and however she wanted, all without even knowing it! Caroline just wished this twisted love triangle would finally find its end.
Even after all he had said to her, Caroline knew that it was Damon's thing to push people away when he needed them the most. That was Damon Salvatore for you…
Damon Salvatore.
"So you decided to come after all," Caroline said smiling at the brunette who seemed to be drinking punch. Pushing the few strands of hair out of her face, Caroline looked over at Bonnie who grinned back at the blonde. "It's our senior year and it does take my mind off a lot of things, so why not right?"
Caroline nodded. Everyone was going through some sort of problem or situation. Sometimes the only thing Caroline could possible do was just be there for them as much as possible. If she wasn't there for her friends, how was so supposed to expect them to be there for her when she needed them the most? They needed her and she needed them. That's how it worked.
Swallowing hard at the sound of the music changing, Caroline looked over at the dance floor where everyone now slow danced, swaying in each other's arms.
Caroline watched as Stefan and Elena made it to the dance floor. Eyeing the two for what seemed like years, Caroline didn't notice the fact that Jeremy had now joined them. And just as she guessed, Bonnie and Jeremy were on the dance floor shortly after. Caroline couldn't help but smile though as she looked at everyone having a great time. Her eyes wandering over the decorations and her peers dancing, Caroline couldn't help but think of Tyler.
Tyler Lockwood.
She missed him so much. There were so many times where Caroline's heart sank when thinking about him and how he was gone. The worst part of it all was the fact that he was gone for her own good and because being under Klaus' control was something no one would ever dream of living with their whole lives. Caroline understood why he had to leave her though. She just missed his touch. And with everything that Damon had said today and now this dance…
Caroline was just tired of always being left behind.
"I can't believe that no one has spiked the punch at all."
Caroline's eyes followed the voice that now seemed to be coming from beside her. She rolled her eyes at the raven haired man before looking back in front of her. "Drown your sorrows somewhere else Damon. What changed your mind about coming anyway?" Caroline asked while sideway glancing at the man.
Damon looked over at Caroline before looking over at Elena and Stefan who seemed to be wrapped up in each other's arms. Trying to avoid the sudden feeling of ache at his chest Damon responded, "Maybe I just listened to your advice Blondie?"
Caroline's brow arched at that, "Really?"
Caroline looked over at Damon who seemed to be grinning at her. Looking back at Stefan and Elena, Caroline's head cocked to the side before looking back over at Damon. Eyes narrowing, Caroline asked, "You want to dance?"
Damon's eyes widened slightly at that while he looked at her blankly. Caroline huffed in a breath before speaking again, "Oh grow up!" Before Damon could protest, Caroline took hold of his hand as she practically dragged him onto the dance floor.
One hand in Damon's and the other at his shoulder, Caroline grinned when Damon finally seemed to rest his hand on her hip. "There you go! Now was that so hard?" Caroline yelled softly.
Damon rolled his eyes at the blonde as he simply seemed to grab tighter onto her waist. Caroline couldn't help but let out a gasp when Damon seemed to move away from her while twirling her. She couldn't help but smile when he twirled her into him and dipped her in his arms. Laughing out loud, Caroline watched as Damon grinned down at her.
Now back at her feet, Damon couldn't help but let his eyes wander towards Elena and Stefan who seemed to be glancing Caroline and his way. In fact, they seemed to be getting eyed by many other people on the dance floor. A smug smile on Damon's lips now, he looked back at Caroline who seemed to be oblivious to the glances her way.
Damon's thoughts then roamed over everything that had happened earlier between the two. Feature's hardening, Damon looked intensely at the blonde now. "Did I mention you look great?" Damon asked causing Caroline's eyes to narrow up at him.
Caroline couldn't help but smile at that. "Was that a compliment Damon?" Caroline asked teasingly, trying to ignore the fluttery feeling she got at the pit of her stomach.
Damon rolled his eyes at the blonde, "Well I thought that was the least you deserved tonight, especially since what I said this morning was not exactly fair to you."
Caroline's eyes softened at that along with a warm smile started to plaster at her lips. "First a compliment and now an apology? Are you sure you're alright Damon?" Caroline asked her tone slightly teasing.
"Don't get too flattered Blondie. It's been a long day," Damon stated in pure boredom.
Caroline softened. "What's wrong?"
Damon's brows furrowed at the worried tone coming from the blonde. "Why do you care? You're supposed to hate me remember?"
Caroline sighed internally at that.
"Like I said last night Damon, I don't hate you, I just don't like you." Caroline said with a grin.
Damon couldn't help but chuckle at that. He didn't know why, but for some reason he seemed like he could actually talk to Caroline. He felt like he could maybe, just maybe confide in her one day.
What had actually happened last night?
"So what are we now exactly?" Damon asked, remembering the memory of Caroline telling him that he had told her many things the night before. Things he had never told anyone ever before.
Caroline grinned up at Damon when he twirled her around once again. Chuckling Caroline responded, "If you get lucky, I might eventually label you as my friend."
Caroline watched as Damon pretended to shiver in disgust at the word, only to have her laughter increase. Totally forgetting about all that had been stressing her out for the last couple of weeks, Caroline paid no attention to anything other than just dancing and laughing with Damon at that very moment.
Damon couldn't help but smile at the blonde's laugh. He knew that whatever this was right in this very moment wasn't something Damon was opened to do. Damon never laughed like this or smiled like this with anyone. And the fact that he didn't seem to push Caroline away again kind of scared him.
He could have sworn they disliked each other a day or two ago, but now they seemed to be getting along just fine?
Caroline becoming a friend rather than an enemy…
Who knew?
How'd you like it?
I know this chapter was extremely shorter than what I usually post up. But I felt like I had to give you guys at least a bit of this story since I haven't updated it in a long time.
I will try my best in updating the next chapter sooner.
