9. Chapter 9 Keep your aim

Chapter 9: Keep your aim

*BANG* *BANG* BANG*

"Your turn." Says Shadow,handing the small ferret a slingshot.

After their small issue was solved,Shadow teleported them to the forests where they could shoot cans and bottles,Shadow using a gun,Darkness using a slingshot.

"Kid." Shadow tries to get his attention.

The small ferret was huddled in a ball rocking back and forth while whimpering to himself.

"Kid I said-"

"S-so dark.." Whimpers Darkness. "W-w-what were those things?...those black creatures..so evil..so dark..and that inner emotion..so angry.."

"Listen,tha-"

"So vengeful.."

"I was only-"

"So full of rage..that emotion...it was out for blood..wasn't it?"

To get Darkness unlinked to his mind,Shadow had the idea to remember his battle against BlackDoom and the black arms. It worked,but by the looks of it,perhaps it worked too good.

"Your turn to shoot." Shadow says,shoving the slingshot to the small ferret.

"How many?" Asks Darkness.

"What?"

"How many did you kill?

*A moment later*

"Hello?"

"Alright Rouge how much longer do I have to do this?" Asks Shadow on his cell behind a tree.

"Shadow what could possibly be wrong this time?" Asks Rouge. "He's just a kid. Surely he's easier to handle than the criminals we hunt down for G.U.N."

"Like hell. If that was the case,I could've tazed him by now and locked him up."

"...good thing we're friends Shadow,because you tend to show some concerning mental signs that I over look for your job's sake."

"Rouge.." Growls Shadow.

"Ok so what's the problem?"

"Everything! The fact that for some screwed up reason I'm looking after this kid."

"..details Shadow." Urges Rouge.

"..he's messy."

"You have to supervise him,he doesn't know EVERYTHING he's doing."

"He can't do anything right,I'm surprised he knew where the soap was."

"Help him out,he can't do everything on his own."

"Also he asks too many damn questions..questions he doesn't need to ask."

"Well he's young Shadow." Says the white bat. "The youth are curious. It's their way of learning."

"Well either way,I don't like this." Says Shadow.

"Just socialize more. In order to make things easier you need to form an understanding of each other."

"Form an understanding?" Asks the black hedgehog in disbelief. "This kid is afraid of everything! How am I supposed to understand that?"

"Well what is it that's scaring him now?"

"Everything. I walk around the house and my footsteps alert him. And he just has a scared look to him every time I see him."

"Shadow." Starts Rouge.

"Yeah?"

"I think it's you he's scared of. I mean you do have a..look to you."

"What're you saying?"

"I'm saying,you scare him. And now I'm suggesting you earn each other's understanding by asking him what HE wants to do. You know..just talk."

"You know this is 'Shadow' calling you,right?"

"Yeah,but-hey I gotta go. A mission's calling me-"

Growling,Shadow hangs up his cell without another word.

"Well damn it-"

"Hey mister."

Flinching,Shadow turns around to see the small ferret cowering within his casted shadow.

"I'm not going to stay with you,you know." Darkness says,looking up at him. "I'm on a mission of my own,I just happened to crash for awhile. That's all..really."

Shadow snorts at the witty comment.

"Crash?" Retorts the dark hedgehog. "Hm! Clearly you're as dull as any other juvenile."

"What's that suppose to mean?"

"All you young ones think alike. You think that just because you're determined that you'll succeed without a mark. That things will just somehow go your way just because you're not giving up. Weak,foolish,that's what you are. You know nothing of your opponent and yet you leap right for it. So you scorched a few,great accomplishment...more like a cheap shot."

"You're one to talk!" Snaps Darkness. "That inner emotion wasn't just an emotion,was it?"

"Why do you feel the need to hunt down this specific person?"

"That inner emotion was you!" Concludes Darkness.

You know nothing of combat."

"You killed them."

"You know nothing of his whereabouts."

"You killed all those people!"

"And you blazed those in slumber!" Growls Shadow. "You think this will solve anything?! Making one more kill will make everything better? Well guess what! With each kill,you lose a part of yourself. Three down,one to go. Count them up..how much of you is left?"

Losing control of his shadow blending,the small ferret begins to climb out the ground. Eyes teary,he looks away.

"Y-you know nothin-"

"Don't I?" Shadow interrupts the small ferret by sternly pushing him up against a tree with his arm.

"Augh!" Cries Darkness. "God stop!"

"I'm not even hurting you kid." States an unamussed Shadow.

"N-no...my back!" Whimpers a shivering Darkness.

Shadow turns over the grey ferret and lifts up his shirt, revealing blood stained fur and deep splinters.

"The hell you've been doing kid?"

"It was a slip! I lost my grip on my power source,then this happened. I crashed into a wooden pole." Explains Darkness. "I tried takeing them out,but I can't reach..or even see them."

"Can't you just split your particles and let the splinters fall out?"

"I can't,it's in my skin." Says Darkness "If an object is in my skin,then it's considered apart of me. It won't go anywhere."

"Hold still." Commands Shadow.

"Why? What are you-Aaaahh!" Cries Darkness,as Shadow begins yanking out the splinters. "Augh! H-how many are there?!"

"Plenty."

"Guah! Please just stop!" Pleads Darkness. "I-I don't need any of your help! I'll figure it out! Ow!"

"Clearly." Says Shadow in a sarcastic tone as he pulls out the last splinter,letting Darkness go. "There,you're all better now. Now stop your crying."

Wiping away his tears,Darkness faces Shadow,trying in a failed attempt to look unfazed. "I'm not crying."

Rolling his eyes, Shadow asks "Why do you do that?"

"Do what?" Darkness snaps while pouting.

"Hm! You're a sucky liar. You try to act like you're stronger than you appear,but you're exactly what you look like."

"And what is that?"

"Weak. Like any other kid."

"I am not weak!" Shouts Darkness,tearing up again.

He then morphs into a mist cloud traveling backwards towards the slingshot behind him. Once reaching it,he materializes back to his solid form and aims a readied rock at Shadow.

Seeing this,Shadow raises a brow at the small kid a few feet away.

"A rock?" Asks Shadow. "That's your statement? That's your proof of being brave?...very well. Fire."

Growling,Darkness steadily pulls back the small stone as far as it could reach,and closes one eye to aim. As he held onto the slingshot aiming,his arms began shaking,his vision blurred as tears cover his sight. Shadow sees this.

"Well? What are you waiting for? Shoot." The dark hedgehog urges.

Darkness finds himself frozen in place,he just can't let go.

"I said shoot."

Darkness tries to hold his arms still from their shaking.

"If you think you have the guts to kill this guy then fire away! This should be no problem for you! Right? Shoot!"

"I-I-"

"I said-"

"I can't!" Shouts Darkness. "Alright? I can't!...I..can't.."

"Pathetic." States Shadow. "And here you are,'on a mission' that you can't even fulfill."

"I thought I-"

"Oh that's right,you 'thought'. You thought you could just go and fix everything. Little runt to the rescue."

"I wasn't expecting to be working by myself!" Yells the small ferret. "Sonic was-"

"Not in agreeing terms. Just as I told you." Points out Shadow. "You're the only one standing in this battle. No one's going to want-"

*Whoosh!*

Shadow was interrupted as a small stone went flying by his ear,feeling the breeze as it speeds past him. He immediately uses chaos control and disappears from sight and presence.

Darkness drops the slingshot and backs away. His shot was an accident,as the sweat from his fingers made him lose his grip. Scared,he looks around and sees no one near. He lowers his gaze as he figures he's made Shadow mad and is once again alone,but this time he now realizes his true weakness..he is a weakling still. Shadow was right,he is a runt.

"Never show mercy on your opponent." Says a familiar dark voice behind the ferret kid,causing him to jump. "Because he wont."

Turning his head to face him,Darkness says "Shadow,I didn't mea-"

"And if you want to make a shot and mean it,aim for the skull. Between the eyes to be more precise."

"Wha-"

"If you wanna do this,you have to at least know what you're doing." Says Shadow. "Now hold the slingshot like this." He positions his arms and hands. "Put more grip on the handle for more force with this hand,and pull back with the other..No,you're doing it wrong."

"I'm doing just what you told me!"

"Don't move your arm back holding the handle. That'll make your aim wrong. Keep it still,you're not moving that arm,the only one moving is the one pulling back the stone. Keep your aim."

They spend the next few minutes practicing this. Shadow would tell Darkness what to do and he'd attempt until he'd finally get it right. Shooting practice soon turned to target practice,then target practice turned to combat practice. Though Darkness wasn't exactly learning combat,just blocking.

Seeing as they could both disappear,Shadow came up with the idea of testing the other to see who could block who first after materializing.

"Guah!"

Darkness doesn't block Shadow's kick this time.

"Never hesitate."

"*cough!* Ughhh,th-that-*cough!* sucked!" Wheezing,the small ferret holds his chest while trying to catch his breath. "...are those shoes metal?!"

"Uum..yeah." Admits Shadow as he remembers his footing advantages.

"..not that I don't appreciate your painful help and all,but can we stop now? Its been an hour or so already." Darkness points out.

"Get up." Commands Shadow,while collecting the slingshot and gun

"Hey,I said-"

"We're leaving now."

With that said Shadow grabs Darkness's arm and chaos controls them back home in Shadow's living room.

"...so Shadow...why didn't you get mad at me for almost shooting your ear?"

Well that is all for now. =)

For those of you who are actually enjoying the story,sorry it took me awhile. I just haven't had much time for ANYTHING since school came back. And being a junior doesn't help..I'm supposed to be "planning my future" and stuff like that,BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE HELL I WANNA DO TWO YEARS FROM NOW!

Man I'm freakin out here!
