Notes: This was written for a prompt exchange between two of my friends on tumblr. It has the possibility to have a sequel / other parts to it, but for now I'm leaving it as it is so I can focus on other things.

Korra's boots scrape on the pavement as she looks at the charcoal clouds, her face covered with droplets that land like tiny kisses melding together and flowing down her skin. The park is dark and cold with the only light coming from the eerie glow of lamp-posts whose light thins in the falling night mist. The ground smells of fresh mud and wet leaves and Korra inhales the scent, welcoming the awakened feeling she gets as it passes through her nostrils. She can hear his footsteps disappear into the trees and the water that falls over her and she keeps walking, even as they grow closer.

"Korra!"

And she stops, turning as he finally catches up. He's not too winded, just enough to have him bend his knees and give a few even breathes and she smiles, thinking of how embarrassing this would look if he were on the job, chasing after all manner of criminals. Luckily, he isn't, and she keeps her thoughts to herself as he straightens up and clears his throat.

"What are you doing over here?" he asks. "I thought you were going to wait for me by the door."

"I wanted to take a walk," she says, her eyes wandering the tree line. "It's been a while since I've came here."

Mako scratches his damp head as he looks around. "I guess that's true, but we should get going." he says. "It's late enough as it is."

Korra leans her back into his chest, tilting her head to meet his eyes and Mako feels a burst of heat flash from beneath his collar and he fakes a cough, lifts the layer of his jacket and swipes a drop of water from his nose. Korra's arms cross and she smirks hard as his face grows into a red hue as his head turns and twists over the park's landscape, determined to look anywhere else but her.

She rolls her eyes and thinks; sometimes he's just too easy.

Mako catches the look in her eye. "Hey, it's not what you think. That food was spicy; it's just getting me a little warm with all these clothes on."

Korra nods." Hm-mm. Yeah and it doesn't have anything to do with that little run you had on your way over here, does it?"

"Well there's that too," he shrugs. Korra stands on her toes and slides her arms around his neck, taking hold of his scarf. The worn maroon material is already wet from the mist and as she unwinds it from his neck her fingers graze along his neck muscles and she feels the heat radiating from his skin. He was telling the truth before. Korra tucks the scarf into the crook of her elbow and places the back of her hand to his cheek.

He stares at her.

"What are you doing?"

Korra backs away with a smile on her lips, her heels tapping on the brick. She shakes her head and says "Nothing." And put her hand in his, their finger lacing together as she leads him to a tree whose ground has not been soaked by the rain. She sits with her back against the rough bark and Mako waits for a moment, his feet poking at the softened ground before he settles besides her and loops his arm over her neck. She rests into his side and their hands are drawn between their legs. She touches his hand lightly, dragging droplets of water between the crevices of his knuckles. His hand turns, the thumb resting on the back of her hand and he looks at her. She looks at him.

"I thought you wanted to take a walk." He says, his voice breaking what little silence was over them even though she knows she heard the rain and the croak of badgerfrogs through the trees. It was muted, lost from her ears and the touch of his hand, as if nothing else mattered.

(but it does – everything matters)

"Who wants to walk in the rain? Besides, it's nicer down here, don't you think?"

"If you don't mind the slowly forming mud."

Her head shakes with a smile and she slaps her palm against his thigh.

"Fine then, City Boy." She says. "We can go."
