Chapter 28
The sun will always rise, the sun will always set...the world will always turn and time will always change...
Maria looked at herself in the mirror and smiled sadly. "This is for you Lucas," she whispered. She reached for her hair brush and ran it through her hair a of couple of times making sure it was presentable. "Time to get busy." She grabbed her purse and made her way out.
Outside, she got into her car and drove to DeMarco's mansion just outside the city. She could have walked if she wanted too, but decided against it in case she had to make a getaway. She pulled up by the mansion and stepped out of the car.
A man walked up and held his hand out. "May I park your car Senorita?" he asked professionally.
"Yes please," she smiled handing him the keys. "She's my baby, be careful with her."
He bowed and stepped aside letting her walk around the car and inside. As she entered the opens doors she looked around at the vast mansion. This is place is huge. She walked through the lobby and was stopped by a large man dressed in a tuxedo.
"May I see your invitation Senorita?" he asked without a smile.
Must be a flunke she thought reaching into her purse and taking out the invitation. "Rather sloppy of you to let me get in this far before asking me if I'm supposed to be here." she smiled then leaned closer. "I won't tell if you don't tell."
He straitened up and fixed his tie and walked away. She watched him leave with a satisfied smile on her face then started for the ballroom again.
"You think she'll be okay?" Lynn asked looking at her watch.
It was after dark and the party had been going on for almost four hours and they hadn't heard anything from Maria.
Jeff stood from the couch and put his 9mm in the back of his pants. "She'll be fine...she knows what she's doing," he walked over to stand next to her at the window. "What do you keep looking at?" he asked curiously.
"I just like watching the people. You learn something new every time you look," she watched as a little boy tried to show his mother something but she was too busy talking on her cell phone. A few steps behind them there was an old man holding onto the wall and using a cane as he walked.
He leaned against the other side of the window facing her. "Listen...things are about to get real crazy and..." he tried to explain. "Be careful okay...I'm not gonna ask you to leave because I know you and you won't tuck tail and run."
"You got that right," she smiled lazily.
"All I ask is that you don't take any unnecessary risks," he requested. "Last thing I want is for you to get hurt."
She just nodded.
