Chapter 31
Three hours had passed since they took refuge in the abandoned warehouse, and no sight of Mariachi.
"Are you sure he knew to come here?" Maria asked fanning herself as she leaned against the wall.
"He'll be here," Jeff reassured quietly.
"Maybe DeMarco got to him first," Lynn sighed.
Maria snorted, "From what I hear honey, Mariachi is not a man to be reckoned with. I doubt seriously DeMarco could take him down when his two predecessor could not."
Lynn shook her head in disbelief, "You make him sound like a ghost."
"It seems I have to live that way," a voice spoke softly from a darkened corner.
Lynn and Maria were startled but Jeff hadn't moved or reacted at all.
"How nice of you to join us El. I would say it's nice to see you but...it is nice to hear you," Jeff replied with a goofy grin as El came out from the corner and into the light.
Lynn looked the new man up and down. So this is the man of all my troubles. I thought he would be bigger she thought as he looked her up and down. She didn't divert her eyes as he 'memorized' her. He turned his gaze to Jeff and pointed at her. "What the hell is she doing here?" he asked dangerously low.
Lynn didn't know what to make of the question she just narrowed her eyes and watched the exchanged between Jeff and Mariachi.
Jeff held up his hands and stood, "If you'll allow me to explain..."
"...What the hell are you doing back in Mexico Sands?" Mariachi asked louder.
Jeff clinched his jaw, not in anger, but mild frustration, "As you can see things haven't panned out as they should've. Now, this whole fiasco can end one or two ways. One, we let DeMarco's men chase us all down till we're tired and wounded and let him kill us, or...we kill him first."
Maria laughed cynically, "Listen to yourself, do you realize what you're saying?"
"What do you say El...third times a charm," Jeff ignored Maria's outburst never taking his gaze from Mariachi.
Mariachi took a deep breath and stared into space for a long moment. What do you want in life... the words Carolina spoke to him many years ago repeated in his mind. "Let's do it."
