Chapter 38
Four months had passed since Lynn slipped into her coma. Four months and not a peep from her. The hospital was able to give her blood after Jeff made a few phone calls and got her blood type. Her condition stabilized but she still remained in a coma. After a few days she was strong enough to move. Jeff had her moved to a hospital closest to the ranch in Arizona so he could keep an eye on her. The only good news he had in the last four months was to find out Mija wasn't dead. Turns out Lucas was just bluffing the whole time. Mija was staying in town and only going to the ranch to check things out once in a while.
Mariachi had said his farewells and gone back to his village when Jeff had Lynn transferred. He loved Mexico and he didn't intend to leave it, or his people. He gave Jeff a contact number and told him to call if there was any change in her condition.
"What are you thinking about over there?" Mija interrupted as she stepped out on the porch.
He gave her a small smile and shook his head, "Nothing."
"Nothing? Come on now, the human brain cannot stop thinking it's impossible. Especially your brain my boy," she slowly sat down in her favorite rocking chair and put her glass of tea on the table.
"The doctors constantly try to reassure me she's not in any pain but...I can't help but wondering if she is," he admitted.
Mija sighed lightly, "Only Lynn knows what's going on with herself and when she's ready to wake up she'll wake up."
Jeff nodded and continued to break apart the twig he had been playing with before she walked out on the porch. "Do you think she dreams?" he wondered out loud.
She tilted her head, "It's my understanding when you're in a coma that you are essentially in the dark, no dreaming, nothing. But how are we to really know. Anyone in a coma could dream and not remember it once they've woken up."
"That's one thing I can still see, my dreams," he voiced. "I've got quit the imagination."
"I'm sure you do," she agreed grinning.
He immediately caught onto her tone and grinned back. "Does your mind ever get out of the gutter?" he asked already knowing the answer. In all the years he has known her she always thought with a dirty mind track.
"Of course it does...if I've gotten some recently," she said conversationally.
He laughed and shook his head. She watched him thoughtfully as he found humor in her words. She was glad he was getting back to his everyday routine. For the first two months or so he just sat around silently, not saying much and if he did it was very brief and unemotional.
"She would be glad to know that you've gone on with your life," she offered softly. "I don't think she would like the way you've been acting lately."
He took a deep breath, "I've just been trying to figure out what I'm going to do. I mean, it is possible she could never wake up."
She regarded him a moment, "You're wondering if you should let her go completely?"
He hung his head regretfully, "I know it sounds selfish but...I keep thinking that she would be disappointed in me if I didn't go on with my life."
"She would be," she said bluntly. "One thing I've always loved about that woman is that she knows the world doesn't revolve around her. If you were to move on I don't think she would hold it against you. She would want you to be happy and if that meant leaving her behind then so be it."
"The more I think about it the more shitty I feel," he sighed. "I don't want to abandon her...I won't."
"You do what you want to do Sheldon I won't hold it against you either way," she knew he was also asking her what she thought without actually asking her.
"Are you reading my mind?" he teased.
"No, but I can read your face like a book," she revealed.
He smiled, "I love you Mija."
She smiled back, "I love you too Sheldon."
