"Today's the day," Lovino said nervously. He stood in front of the mirror as he buttoned up his freshly pressed and washed white shirt.

"So it is," said Antonio, watching him. "Can you tie my tie for ?"

Lovino turned back and scowled at his husband. "Why can't you learn how to do it yourself?" he grumbled.

Antonio shrugged. "I like it better when you do it. Also, you get mad at me when I try."

"That's because you're no good at it!" Lovino turned and grabbed his own tie from the bed, hurriedly tying it. Once again, he was having doubts about this. Not all of it, just some. For example, should they really be dressing this fancy? After all, while it was important to dress nicely, this was... a bit different than usual.

"Maybe we shouldn't wear the ties," he finally said.

"Okay," Antonio said, setting his tie back on the bed.

"Or... Maybe we should!" said Lovino, having another change of heart. Antonio reached for his tie once more, but before he could successfully grab it Lovino had changed his mind yet again.

Antonio walked up and set his hands on Lovino's shoulders, leaning in to kiss the back of his head. "It'll be okay, either way, Lovi," he whispered in the other man's ear.

"If you say so..." Lovino muttered doubtfully. "Maybe we shouldn't wear the ties though. Or even the fancy shirts. Let's... just wear nice t-shirts? She's only four, after all..."

Antonio shrugged. "It's your choice. You're the one with the fashion sense."

The small half-smile tugging at Lovino's lips was, in Antonio's opinion, brighter than the sunlight that shone through the windows.

"No I'm not..." he murmured.

"Are too," Antonio said with a smile. "Now come on, let's get ready and go pick up our little girl!"

The drive to the orphanage was strange and all sorts of wonderful. Taipei, Taiwan, was a beautiful place, with tall buildings and lots of people. It was not much different than most other cities, but Lovino had always liked cities.

The air in the rental car was so tense with nervousness that Lovino imagined he could cut it with a knife- if he had one, that is. He kept fidgeting; he couldn't help it. It was strange, doing this finally. They had been on a waiting list for two years or so. It had been so long that he had almost resigned himself to the fact that it would never happened, but then- then it had.

And now here they were.

Antonio turned into a parking space, stopping the car and unbuckling himself. He and Lovino just sat there for a moment in a pensive silence, staring at the road in front of them.

"This is terrifying," said Lovino, who felt like his heart would beat out of his chest. He was so nervous his hands were shaking slightly.

"Yeah," Antonio agreed, though he sounded surprisingly calm.

"This is the scariest thing that's ever happened to me."

"Yeah," Antonio agreed yet again.

"...So, if we have a kid, does this mean our sex life turns to dust?"

"Not if I can help it." Antonio said with a grin.

Lovino shrugged. "Suddenly I don't feel nervous anymore," he said, a slight smile tugging at his lips. "Now, let's go inside."

"Let's."

With that, they both got out of the car and headed inside.

They had, of course, met her before- their adoptive daughter -but this was when they would take her home. This was... this was...It was terrifying and scary and Lovino couldn't wait for it to finally happen.

Once inside, they walked up to the front desk.

"Um..." Lovino started.

"We're here to pick Mei up!" said Antonio as Lovino trailed off.

"Of course," said the man behind the desk. "Just sign in right here, and then I'll go and get her."

They both signed the paper, and then the man left. Lovino shifted from foot to foot as he waited. How would Mei react? Had they explained to her exactly what was going on? Did she understand? She was only four, and didn't speak much English, and they were taking her all the way back to Portland, Oregon...

The back doors open, and the man came back, leading Mei by the hand and dragging a small, pink suitcase beside him.

"Here is Mei," the man said shortly, with a tight smile. "You may take her now."

The man stepped back behind the desk, leaving little Mei to stand alone in front of her two new parents.

"Hello," she said politely. She bowed forward slightly, then reached out and grabbed the handle of her suitcase. Antonio frowned lightly, then moved forward and gently pried the suitcase from her firm little grip.

"Don't worry now, Mei-Mei," he said brightly, crouching down beside her. "We're your papas now. There's no need to be so formal! Don't be frightened!"

She looked at him doubtfully, pouting her small lips. Her long, smooth black hair was tied up in a bun, and she was wearing a small pink dress with a bear on the front.

"Humph," she said.

Lovino laughed at the confused expression on Antonio's face, then reached down and picked Mei up, swinging her into his arms. He knew how this adoption thing went; he had lived in an orphanage for a while, once his grandfather- who had raised him -mysteriously disappeared.

"Don't worry about her, Antonio. She'll be just fine."

And she was. In fact, as the years passed, she grew more and more fine.

At first, it was awkward getting used to her new home, and it was strange trying to teach her English, and also trying to get her to remember Taiwanese (which they both spoke a little, but not quite as expertly as they could have).

After that, there was the whole problem of school. On the first day, they both came to drop her off (Lovino specifically taking time out of his busy schedule as a high-end chef). This caused all the little boys and girls to tease Mei, both because she had a strange accent (she was only five and had been speaking English for a year; she was not perfect at it) and because she had two papas.

She ended up being sent to the principal's office because she punched one boy and kicked two others in the shins, yelling about how two papas were better than one.

As she grew older and older, Lovino, who had been a sort of... hooligan when he was young, began to worry intensely about Mei. He got super suspicious whenever she would bring friends over, even if they were only six and coloring in Winnie-the-Pooh coloring books. Sometimes Antonio would have to actually drag Lovino away and get him doing some menial task, like washing the windows or folding the laundry, just to keep him from going into overprotective-dad mode.

That wasn't to say Antonio wasn't protective- he would skin any boy or girl who hurt his Mei-Mei -but he knew that you have to let a child be themselves or else they get all mean and nasty and hate you and everyone else. Which isn't good.

And then of course, there were the things that were just plain awkward- like when Mei-Mei told them she was having "girl problems"- ie. she got her period all over her underwear and ohmigod-it's-so-bloody-I-thought-I-would-get-it-la ter-I'm-only-twelve -and Antonio had to gently explain that he would take care of it and yes, Papa Lovi was doing okay, he was just a little emotional.

(In reality he was in the kitchen trying not to throw up, since they thought of blood made him nauseous, but either way.)

Yes, there were bumps in the road, and occasional brief liberations from its flat black surface (such as when Mei was learning how to drive- eesh), but eventually they came to the moment when Mei got her high school diploma, or when she moved across the country to go to college in NYC, or when she had her first terrible screw-up, which resulted in her house being robbed and her heart being broken by the same person.

They also eventually reached the time when Mei walked down to aisle- by herself, saying that she was not being passed from one owner to the next -and chose to spend the rest of her life with a man of her choosing- despite the fact that both of her fathers advised her to be lesbian because then there's no pregnancy.

Antonio and Lovino watched their little girl from Taiwan grow up into a fine young woman who married a fine- well, okay, in Lovino's opinion -young man and have fine young children (children are generally young when born).

They watched her grow until it was simply too late for them to continue, and then they both left this world and passed into the mystery of the next.

C'est la vie.
