Sodium One: A Major Malfunction Chapter Four

By ThisGuyHere

Summary: Salt Shooter sounded like the perfect way to keep the people occupied- action-packed warfare, but not against humans, providing a vital outlet for all the pent-up feelings of anger without the guilt of actual war. Until something goes terribly wrong, someone is killed, someone's responsible, and feelings about the game change. Suddenly, it's not a game anymore.

A/N: Christ, it's been a while, hasn't it? I haven't had much drive to work on this story, as it seems no one's enjoying it. I think this project has amassed a total of one view in its lifetime? No reviews, so I don't know what it is that's turning people away, or if it's just boring and no one cares, or whatever. Anyhow, I'm going to write another chapter. Maybe this will be the one where things begin to happen? I don't know. I've only got a rough outline and… you probably don't care about any of this, do you? Alright, fine, on with the story.

From the main Sodium hub, Nick and I headed slowly towards Scorpio's, chatting about Salt Shooter and our story.

Okay, maybe just about Salt Shooter.

"I'm telling you, the best approach is to drive along the outside and make them follow, then blast them from the front with heavy artillery," Nick remarks, trying to force his strategy and tactics on me. He's well known in the Shooter circuit, perhaps not for how good he is, but how dangerous his matches are, not only to himself, but to spectators.

"Whatever you say, man. Hey, isn't that the crew up ahead?" I point just inside Scorpio's, where everyone is rushing to the stage where a live news report is playing instead of the normal circulation of advertisements, a rare occurrence.

As we run into Scorpio's, I hear the reporter explain that after a massive explosion rocked the Shooter training grounds, the plasma barriers performed an emergency shutdown, allowing the computerized enemies to escape.

"Emergency crews have located the source of the explosion, which seems to have been caused by a Shooter craft registered to a Nicholas Baltinger." With this information from the reporter, some people from the office turn to look at Nick and myself.

The reporter continues: "The craft had undergone several massive modifications, including the addition of three extra fuel cells, two miniature afterburners, and one unlicensed nuclear laser weaponry system. The detonation of the craft occurred near both the barrier generator and the spectator stands. Safety officials have been unable to find a body directly in the wreckage, leading them to believe that the pilot escaped the craft before it detonated. Due to the position of the explosion and the number of illegal modifications made to the craft, Sodium government officials have labeled this as a terrorist attack. The death toll currently stands at one thousand, five hundred and four civilians."

On this note, four Shooter Safety Enforcement Association agents entered the bar, and one of them announced, "Is there a Nicholas Baltinger on the premises?"

I will never forget the image of those agents dragging my friend away as long as I live.
