Happy new year! I hope you like this chapter :)
Fey hit the last key with more force than necessary, shut down the laptop and cried, "Done at last you mother effing essay! We have now finished you" throwing her fist into the air and then stuffing the laptop back into her backpack she crossed her legs and rested her head on the back of the couch. The place was a mess, filled with potato chip bags, dirty napkins and used plates.
The girls watched her with contended amusement as they close their own laptops and put them away.
"Okay… that's enough coffee for today" Diana said sarcastically.
"Is it today or tomorrow?" Melissa asked confused as she whipped her eyes in an attempt to delete the feeling that hours of staring into a computer did.
Diana took out the cellphone from the outside pocket of her bag and checked the time, "Hey it's not that bad, it's 12:14 am" she said rather cheerfully.
Upon those words Faye's neck snapped up and in her dace it was plastered a devious grin. "Are you kidding me?" she said as she went for Diana's bag and took out the book of shadows, much to her annoyance, "The nights is still young" she sat with her legs crossed once again and stared at the group.
"So…" she began "Which spell should we try?" Faye opened the book and started passing page after page in what was supposed to be a tempting demeanor.
"Just because we are witches" Diana said as she snatched the book from Faye's hands "doesn't mean we have to practice all the time, what about college? It's not like Harry Potter, we can't just live from a career in magic"
Faye shot her a dirty look and pouted "Di, Di you always take out the fun, how does Adam put up with you?" she held her head on one hand.
"I am not trying to take away all the fun but magic is a serious thing!" she slapped the book against her leg, "I mean if we even get caught who knows what the hell could happen?"
"So…" Faye began contemplating "You are saying is like a drug?" she held an eye brown and looked at her incredulously.
Diana fought to find the right words, "It's not what I meant, but I guess it could be seen that way… Wait!" she said all of the sudden "Why are we even talking about this?" she stared at Faye waiting for an answer.
" I was just thinking… I've never tried drugs. How about you guys?" she asked the rest of the group.
Cassie and Melissa shared a confused look, neither of them had any idea of how the subject had change so drastically. "Ehhh…" Melissa said "No, no I've never tried any, not even considered it, why?"
Upon her response Faye shrugged her shoulders, "No reason" she said "just being curious. Cassie?"
"Well I've never tried" Cassie said "but we once almost did. With my friends, like a year ago" she explained and shrugged her shoulders as well.
Everyone's eyes got wide and stared at Cassie making her feel uncomfortable. "What?" she asked.
"You almost tried drugs?" Faye asked her with a huge grin, "You get more interesting by the minute! Spell out!" She was clearly excited about the new turn of events. Melissa smiled slightly amused but Diana just kept staring at her with fear.
"It was not a big deal, we weren't depressed or trying to get away from anything, we were curious. Nobody had ever done drugs but you see the kids in school and on TV so we wanted to make it…" she struggled to find a word and said "…recreational"
Before Faye could say anything Diana cried, "Cassie that's crazy! Didn't you think about your safety?! And what if you got addicted?" Diana was surprised, how could Cassie how was so kind and smart had tried to do such a foolish thing?
"Of course we thought about all of that but drug will only get you if you let it, it's not like with just one sniff we would try to kill our aunts to get another high!" she assured her "It was going to be just that one thing, to try and see but one of my friends dad got to the house and we panicked knowing they wouldn't be so understanding so we flush it down the toilet. We never thought about it except to laugh"
Diana relaxed a bit but not quite. A silence settled and then Faye said "We should try it"
"What?!" Diana said horrified.
"Yeah, I mean why not? Just a couple of witches exploring new horizons" she said with a smile.
"You are crazy" Diana reprimanded her.
"I wanna try" Melissa said cheerfully and Diana stared at her with crazy eyes.
"What?!" She couldn't believe what was happening.
"Yeah, Cassie is right if we don't need the drug then it's just recreational. I'd like to know how it would be like"
Cassie nodded showing her consent.
"It's settled then! I'll meet with the Marky dork tomorrow during break and buy for some. We'll find a time to do it"
"Diana looked at all in disbelief and said grudgingly "Fine, I'm in too"
The three of them eyed her suspiciously, "Really?" They all asked.
"Yes, I don't like it but at least I'll be sure that nothing gets out of control"
"Suit yourself, but we are going to enjoy it" Faye said winking at her and Diana threw a pillow to her face to which she responded by throwing her to the floor grabbing her by the wrists and then picking the pillow to slap her face with it unfortunately Diana's head landed on a pile of dirty napkins from the meal they had eaten.
"Oh! Gross!" Diana pushed Faye away from her and sat up straight touching her hair carefully, apparently no traces of food were in it and she dropped her hands to her sides.
"We should clean this up" Diana said looking at the mess on the floor. "Cassie where do you have the cleaning stuff"
"In the kitchen" she said getting up and Melissa followed her. She went to a small closet on the side of the kitchen and took a broom, a mop and other cleaning products.
They spent twenty minutes cleaning the floor as well as the dishes.
"I want to learn magic" Melissa said suddenly while drying the dishes. She didn't see the startled reactions of the girls and waited until she had dried one and placed it next to the other to raise her eyes.
"I understand what you say Di, but I don't that what happened to me today happens again to any of us. Magic can protect us"
Faye and Diana shared a pained looked, they still weren't clear about what had happened to her but whatever it was it most had been terrifying.
Cassie grabbed her hand and Melissa looked at her, she was smiling "You are right" Cassie said, "we'll do it" Cassie left her gaze and focused on Diana, "Right?"
Her expression was of sympathy, "Right" she agreed.
"Then we shouldn't waste another minute" Faye dropped the mop and headed to the living room, the girls followed her.
She picked up the book of shadows from the floor and said "We should close the drapes" nodding to the big windows in the front of the house. Cassie closed the drapes of the window next to her and Diana went to the one that faced the front yard. She took the drapes and was about to pull them when something caught her eye. It was dark outside and the only things visible had an orange taint due to the street lights. She could see the front yard and the sidewalk, crossing the street it was another sidewalk that ended abruptly at the beginning of the woods. On the shadows and barely visible she saw two people facing each other and she was surprised when she recognized the manly figure.
"Guys!" she whispered.
"What?" Faye said distractedly as she tried to find a spell in the book.
"Come! It's Jake" With no rush the girls joined at her side.
"Well you are a real pepper aren't you?" Faye said mockingly.
"No, look he is in the woods with some woman"
"What?!" Faye tried to scoop close to window and after a few seconds she saw them.
"I don't know her" she recognized at that point all four girls had their faces pressed against the clod glass neither Melissa nor Cassie knew the mystery woman either.
"Could she be a girlfriend?" Diana asked.
"I don't think so, he would have told us don't you think?" Melissa suggested.
Despite the small pang of jealousy that Cassie felt she noticed something strange in their behavior. The woman was barely visible but she could see her angry gestures against Jake and on one occasion she moved and her face got in the light making her features more visible.
"She is old" Cassie stated.
"Really?" Faye asked with interest trying to see for herself.
"Yeah, like our parents age, and she is not happy"
"Who the hell is she?" Diana asked to herself.
A few minutes went by until the woman left and Jake went to his house. When they saw him get inside they closed the drapes and went back to the couch.
"How strange!" Melissa commented.
"I think we've got a problem" Faye said. The girls turned and looked at her.
"What?" Cassie asked.
"I think she saw us"
