When Scott and Daisy returned to the revelries, the group had gathered around the pool table where Auggie and Peter were taking turns showing off. The conversation immediately halted when they entered the room. Peter, always quick on his feet, didn't miss a beat and was instantly greeting both of them. He embraced Daisy in a hug and then turned to Scott. "I thought you couldn't make it. It's good to see you."

Scott muttered a half-hearted "Good to see you too" in response.

"Hey, Meat," Auggie called out, "good to see your face man!"

Scott smiled at the old nickname. "Good to see you too Aug."

As the rest of the group exchanged pleasantries, Shelby faded into the background and took a seat at a table against the wall. She wondered how long it would be until Scott acknowledged her. She knew she could, and maybe should, make the first move, but she felt that Scott at least owed her the satisfaction of saying hello first. She knew it was a petty game, but he had broken her heart without so much as a backwards glance. Why should she have to do all of the work? It was striking to her how much she felt like the same angry, scared teenager all over again.

She listened as Auggie and Scott challenged Peter and Sophie to a game of pool. Scott suggested a wager, but Peter quickly shot him down and insisted it was just for fun. As the others watched the start of the game, Daisy, too, slipped away and joined Shelby at her table.

"It's a bit unreal isn't it?"

"Which part?" Shelby scoffed. "The part where we're friends again? The part where we're standing here again? The part where Scott just waltzes in and pretends that I don't exist? Or the part where Ezra is dead and David's in jail?"

Daisy took a long drink and shook her head, "Yeah. All of it." She stared off at the group in much the same way as Shelby and drained the last of the liquid from her glass. "I feel like a teenager again."

"Me too," Shelby agreed. "And we all know how fun that was the first time around."

Daisy laughed, and Peter turned away from the game at the sound. "Are you two going to join us?"

Shelby shook her head. "Nah, pool's not my game." She tucked her long blonde hair behind her ears. "I'm just here for the food."

Peter smiled. "Annie should have the food out soon."

As if on cue, Annie and a few members of her wait staff began hauling out trays of food and, before long, the game was abandoned and the Cliffhangers and their former counselors were seated around the table, double bacon cheeseburgers and curly fries heaped in front of them.

Peter was the first to raise his glass. "A toast," he announced, "to Ezra. May he finally find peace."

The rest of the group raised their glasses and echoed "To Ezra."

"May the bridges be sturdy wherever he may be," Shelby joked.

After some nervous laughter, the others joined in. "And may the honeys be bountiful," joked Auggie.

"And the friends caring," added Kat.

"To Horizon," Juliet finished in a shaky voice, "and all of our friends we've lost along the way."

The group was somber as they set down their glasses, but, slowly, the conversations began and the sadness of the weekend and the awkwardness at having not seen each other in years faded away with fond memories and catching up taking their place.

Eventually their plates emptied and talk shifted to settling in for the night.

"Are you all staying at Horizon?" Kat questioned. "I planned to stay there tonight as well."

A look of concern washed over Shelby's face. "Peter said he took care of the reservations," Shelby looked up. "I'm assuming he meant a hotel…"

Peter smiled. "Well…"

Shelby groaned. She knew that smile all too well. "Seriously Peter?"

"We have an empty dorm," Peter explained. "The TrailBlazers are out on quest this week."

"The TrailBlazers?" Auggie laughed.

Sophie smiled. "We needed a new group after we retired the Cliffhangers."

"Of course you are all welcome to stay at the inn down the street," Peter continued, "but I thought it might be nice to all be together at Horizon again."

The Cliffhangers exchanged glances, debating the option their former counselor had put in front of them.

"All of us in one dorm?" Juliet questioned. She squeezed Auggie's hand knowing that she didn't want to be apart from him, not now.

Peter nodded. "First time in Horizon history – a coed sleepover in the dorms."

Shelby snorted. "First time? You wish." The rest of the Cliffhangers chuckled as Peter feigned a shocked look. He wasn't quite as naïve as his former students thought.

"Well?" Sophie persisted. "Will you stay at Horizon?" Her face was hopeful. She was excited at the prospect of the Cliffhangers at Horizon again.

"Come on guys," Kat pleaded. "It will be like old times."

"And that's supposed to be…good?" Daisy questioned, though she smiled in spite of her sarcasm.

It took a few minutes, but eventually they all agreed to stay on campus.

Auggie glanced around the group. "Horizon as an adult – what a trip, man." He laughed.

Peter's look turned serious as he addressed the group. "I know you're all adults now," his eyes lingered for just a moment longer on Daisy and Scott, "and you're free to make your own choices, but if you stay at Horizon you still need to follow our rules, for the safety of the students."

"So," Daisy muttered, "should we expect a full physical when we check in?"

Peter shook his head. "No, I'm just asking that you don't bring any alcohol or cigarettes with you," he hesitated for a minute and wondered if he should add the last part. "No drugs and no sex either."

Kat nodded, as did Auggie and Juliette, but Shelby sounded much like her old self when she responded "Should we expect to go out on quest too, Captain?"

Peter groaned and a smile touched Shelby's lips. "No quests, no physicals, no group." He smiled. "And I promise hot, fresh, caffeinated coffee in the morning."

"Hallelujah!" Daisy declared, and they all laughed.

"Well if we're all agreed then let's grab your bags. Sophie and I brought the van to take us back."

Scott shook his head as he slung the strap of his duffel bag over his shoulder with one hand while balancing his drink in the other. "Thanks for the offer, but I'll drive myself." He ducked his head self-consciously when Peter turned to look at him. How was it possible that he still felt the need to explain himself here? "I want to be able to smoke on the way up."

If Peter disapproved he didn't show it, though his eyes lingered on Scott for just a bit longer than necessary.

"I'll ride with Scott," Daisy chimed in, not waiting to be invited. "Crowded vans have never been my thing."

Shelby's eyebrows shot up, and she shot Daisy a "what are you doing?" look. Daisy pretended not to notice and instead walked her empty glass back to the bar, leaving the group to stare after her.

Scott shrugged and broke the uncomfortable silence. "We'll meet you there I guess?"

"Are you sure?" Sophie asked. Her eyes traveled to the glass that Scott was still holding. "We're happy to give you a ride. We'll even wait if you want to have one last smoke…"

Scott shook his head as the rest of the Cliffhangers wordlessly watched the exchange. "I've only had one. I'm fine." He glanced quickly at Shelby before returning Sophie's gaze. "I promise."

Sophie nodded, not entirely satisfied but knowing that she would not be able to change his mind. The group slowly grabbed their bags and headed outside to the waiting van. Peter stayed back, wanting to talk to Scott.

When it was just the two of them Scott spoke up. "I'm fine, Peter. Really."

Peter nodded. That wasn't the reason he had stayed. "I'm really glad you're here Scott, but I have to know, what changed your mind?"

Scott shrugged while fumbling with the pack of cigarettes he had pulled from his back pocket. "It's like you said before," Scott's eyes studied the floor before briefly meeting Peter's eyes, "what did I ever learn from winning?"

With that, Scott went to retrieve Daisy from the bar, leaving Peter staring after his former student, feeling both humbled and proud.
