Here I have another chapter for you~! Sorry to leave you on
We've? Could this situation get anyways?
Why yes, yes it can.
Yami's POV:
Duke, Anzu and I had so far made it safely to the other side of the street. The dead monsters, or "walkers", as Tristion calls them, were interested in something that smelled of raw meat.
I didn't want know where the smell came from.
Duke led the way to what must have been an old brewery, why they had a brewery so close was beyond me, but it was perfect. From the outside, it looked empty, but that didn't mean nothing was inside. Anzu was making too much noise as she walked, complaining and continued to make strange noises. I mentally sighed, wishing I had Yugi here with me. I was dying of worry and wanted to get this over with as soon as possible.
We carefully made it inside, the door making a drawn out creaking noise. I tried to not react to the noise, but I knew that whatever was in the building was alerted by our presence. I heard Duke mumbling to himself, but quickly was silenced by a sharp blow to the ribs. Anzu glared at him.
"You need to shut up before we alert anymore people we're here."
"You're one to talk, miss 'I-want-to-make-certain-noises-so-the-boys-will-no tice-me'."
"I am NOT!"
Okay that's enough. And I decided to remind them in a calm and collective way they needed to remain quiet.
"You both need to shut the fuck up before one of those god forsaken creatures comes and starts tearing you limb from limb and I already know which one of you I'm personally saving. So knock this bullshit off."
They both go silent. I think my pep talk worked rather nicely.
We entered a rather dark and damp room, and Duke made a bee-line toward the back of it. Anzu and I looked at each other, and I could tell she wanted to say something, but kept her mouth shut for once and just raised an eyebrow, either asking "What the hell is he doing" or "We got some time?". I just shrugged in response, and turned away from her. I could hear here walk over to the door and stand guard, holding her weapon at the ready. I looked at her for a moment, wondering what she was planning, or more like what the fuck was she doing? But I heard bottle clank together and Duke's satisfied "hm" of approval and knew this stupid mission was soon to be over with. I was worried about Yugi, about what the hell he was doing right now. Was he safe? Was he in danger? No, he couldn't be; nobody there—okay Joey wouldn't let that happen. Duke stood, carefully carrying a dozen bottles. I nodded at him, and he grins. We were just about to make out silent exit when suddenly a cry came from upstairs. Duke looked up right away, in totally surprise, Anzu with fear, and I with annoyance. Great, now anything that was there was going to go towards that noise. And from the voice, that sounded like a little girl. Anzu looked at them, now fearful.
"We need to get moving, now."
"But what about her, she needs our help!" Duke argued, setting the bottles down.
Shit.
"Well she was dumb enough to get herself in that situation, she doesn't need us!" Anzu countered, getting a better grip on her gun. Time to step in.
"I think Duke's right here, we can't leave her here. What if that was you?" I said plainly enough, looking straight at Anzu. She looked down, thought about it, and then nodded. I smiled a bit, and then carefully made my way out of the room, which I soon found to be a cellar, which made sense. The noise was above us, but I didn't remember going down any stairs.
"We must have entered from the back." Duke states aloud in a small whisper, confirming my own belief. Nodding, I crouched down and slowly made my way towards the stairs. When I came closer to the steps, I noticed that some of the steps had rotted out or some were plain missing. Nothing was ever easy, was it? Carefully, I avoided the first step, only to cause the second to groan under my weight. Every freezes, and waits; waiting for anything to come to our location. When nothing happens, I start to move. After reaching the top of the steps, I look to see Anzu almost right behind me, suddenly break a step, screaming as her leg falls through the hole. Duke, surprisingly close behind, curses and catches her, covering her mouth to prevent any more sound, or to prevent any more unwanted guest. We slowly are able to pull Anzu's leg out of the hole, and she complains about having splinters. I told her that I'd take a look at her leg later, and that seems to shut her up a bit.
We finally make it to the source of the screaming, which is hidden behind a door that was being pounded at by one of those creatures, or how Yugi says, "monsters". It's skin was rotting off of its bones, and it's moments seemed to be jerky, but it seemed to be hell-bent on getting to that source. Anzu ended that in one shot. The creature went lip and crumbled to the floor, finally dead. When I walked over to the door, I heard sobbing. Duke carefully knocked on the door, "Ma'am?"
"GO AWAY!"
"Shh! Ma'am we're here to help, please open up." Duke tries again.
"I SAID GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!"
This wasn't going anywhere, and I was not about to make this journey for nothing. And I decided now was a good time to let her know that.
"Look, miss, you either open this door right now, or I break it down. You have five seconds."
She continued to yell at me, but when I started to kick the door, she said she was coming out. She slowly unlocked the door and cautiously stepped out, worried.
"Oh my god… She's been bit." Anzu gasps, seeing the blood on her person. I almost gaged at the smell of her; the smell of death. I don't know why it lingered around her much more than any part of this god-forsaken worked, but it just did.
"I know! I-I know I'm a goner, that's why I wanted you to go away, but you wouldn't listen!" She started to become hysterical, and I started to panic. Oh shit, I was not prepared for this, what would a leader do? I looked at her.
"But you've just been battened, there's no way—"
"But that's how it starts, you see. My boyfriend was bit and he just kept bleeding and bleeding until finally he died of blood loss. Then he came back and bit me forbore I could end him. I-I'm a christen woman, I have MORALS. I CANNOT become one of those—those THINGS!"
She sobbed even louder, and grabbed onto me. I wanted to comfort her, but there wasn't much I could do. What can you say to a dead-person walking?
She let got me long enough to stare Anzu down.
"I see you have a gun?"
"Yeah, it's to kill those things with."
"Would you… would you mind if I borrowed it?"
"What—wait a second, you can't seriously-!"
"IT'S MY ONLY CHOICE!"
I looked between them, and sighed. This… this had to be done.
"Give her the gun."
"But—"
"Do it, Anzu."
She reluctantly did. Duke looked like he was about to vomit.
"I can't watch this."
"Go downstairs and wait for me there. When I get down there, have everything ready. We're going to be leaving as soon as… matters are dealt with." I chose my words carefully.
"But what are you going to do?" Anzu asked, a hint of worry and dear in her voice.
"…. Somebody has to get the gun."
They both looked at me and nodded, and left. It was soon just me and this woman, who was looking at me like I was her hope, her last resort. I handed her the gun.
"God bless you…" She says softly, grabbing the gun, giving me a sweet, soft, smile, then raising the gun to her head and pulling the trigger.
I turned my head and closed my eyes. I was glad Yugi wasn't here to witness this. I slowly turned back, to see blood oozing out her head, and her crumbled next to the creature from before. I bent down and picked the gun up, and as quickly as I could, made it safely down the stairs. Anzu was crying, and Duke looked like he was on the verge of doing so. I knew my own eyes stung, but this was the harsh reality of the world. I handed Anzu back her gun.
"Let's go. We need to get these stupid drinks to Keith." I simply say as I picked up the remaining bottles and walked out of the back doors, trying hard not to think about the girl who we met just a few moments before, now dead on the floor. She wasn't even giving a proper burial. I'm not a religious person, but I said a silent prayer to whomever or whatever was out there, asking them to please allow her to enter their kingdom.
"All this just for booze… Keith better be worth this shit."
