Thayet's Study

"Thayet?" George whispered into the room. The lights were off and he could hardly see in front of him. He felt a hand slide over his arm and heard the door shut softly behind him. He started to make out shapes and objects as his eyes slowly started to adjust to the darkness.

"Are you sure we should be doing this, anyone could just happen to walk in you know."

"It'll be fine," Thayet whispered soothingly in his ear "and any way, they're all too busy with the ball to notice our absence."

"Mine perhaps, but not yours, you're the freakin' queen Thayet. I'm sure the other two will feel something's a miss."

"You worry too much," she said and kissed him teasingly on the lips drawing him closer to her.

"Do I?" He said, and kissed her again.

The Ball

"May I have this dance?" another fine looking young man asked her again that night.

"It would be my pleasure," Alanna responded politely. As she and the young man walked towards the dance floor Gary and Raoul talked quietly.

"I think I like this new Alanna," Gary said thoughtfully.

"I think just about every man does," Raoul answered.

"But how could George miss this, the night his wife captures every man's attention?"

"I don't know, maybe he didn't know."

"How could you not, I mean I would certainly know if Cyth ever walked out looking like that."

"Why ask me, I don't even have a lover."

"Hmm… True, Jon! Would you know if Thayet walked out looking like how Alanna is now? Well you know… In a jaw dropping dress."

Jon raised an eyebrow at him, "don't tell me I just escaped a bunch of rich nobles complaining about taxes to be asked a question like that."

"Well…" Raoul said prompting him.

"WELL." He went on "I think I probably would know if my wife was wearing a stunningly sexy dress and had everyman's attention. I would probably even go through the precaution of being with her at all times just in case some guy tried anything."

"Well said," Gary replied cutting him off. They'd only been expecting a simple yes or no answer and weren't sure where that whole rant had come from, maybe the guy was a little stressed. "So where is your wife by the way Jon, I haven't seen her at all tonight."

"Oh she'll be around," he said rather dismissively. "I'm sure she will."

The Dance Floor

It was nice to be able to look stunning every now and then, but she wasn't sure whether it was all it was cracked up to be. To be honest, she'd kind of gotten bored. After a while every man started to say the same thing, and while it was nice at first it was a bit repetitive. The guy she was dancing with at the moment kept droning on about how his mother was trying to find him a wife, she'd taken the hint and just subtly mentioned that she was married. She saw his face drop slightly but it did little to shut him up. Help me she called silently in her head, before I die of boredom. A wave of relief washed over her as Jon came forwards to dance with her. "Thank you!" She sighed with gratitude, "that guy just didn't know when to stop and wouldn't stop trying to make me his wife. Sheesh!"

Jon chuckled and held her close, "I suppose I'll have to hold off my affections then," he murmured in her ear. She looked at him, violet eyes suspicious, "don't Jon… This morning never happened."

"But –." He tried to speak and the hurt in his eyes made her feel bad.

"No one is to know of this, and until George and Thayet are gone we can't be together." Understanding dawned in his eyes, "very well," he said and led her off the dance floor as the music ended.
