Chapter 11: Family Ties
"But puh-leeeeez let me pull him up!"
"No Jenny, you're not strong enough..." he heaved, irritated.
"YES I AM! I CAN DO IT!"
"No. Jenny. You. Can't." He paused after each word to emphasize.
"Ay haha! Any day now..." he said awkwardly from below.
"Yes, yes Doctor just give them a minute, you don't know how hilarious it is to watch them argue..." River laughed.
"Give me that rope!" Jenny demanded.
"Jenny, I get that you love your dad and all but you have to understand there are some things I can do that you can't..."
"AND WHY IS THAT!?" she stood up placed both hands on her hips.
"Because... you are SEVEN!" He shook his head and unintentionally began smiling at the girls' spirit.
"NO! I won't have it!" She shoved him aside and she held the rope in her hands by herself.
Rory lay on his side and watched Jenny for a few seconds, River on the opposite side of the hole, smirking at him.
"Good job Jenny!" The Doctor shouted from below again and chuckled; thankful he was finally being pulled up.
She had been able to pull him up for a while, her face bright red as she held her breath to use all her strength; then she began to slip.
Her feet slowly began shifting towards the hole and she let out a nervous yelp that sounded like she was about to break out into tears again.
Rory quickly jumped to his feet, kicking the alien gun towards River, "I've got you!" He stood behind her yet gripped the rope in front of her and hovered over her as he and Jenny pulled up The Doctor.
"Hey look..." she said softly and looked straight up with her sparkling eyes into his sparkling ones, "we're working together..." she smiled.
Soon enough, the Timelord was back to the surface with his companions, one of them looking paler than ever.
"Now what?" Rory asked, out of breath.
"We ditch the evidence." River said simply.
She angled her body perfectly so she could hit her targets. She began shooting the compound below and some of the rock that surrounded the walls of the hole, crumbling it and sending giant pieces of it crashing to the ground below.
"You think that'll avoid police suspicion?" The Doctor asked.
"With a few kisses from me, sure it will," she winked, the two men smiled and understood, the small girl just stared in bewilderment.
Immediately though, Rory's expression changed to serious,
"We've got to get Amy to the hospital. Now." He demanded.
"Yes, right, of course we do!" The Doctor paced around, "I'll go haul two cabs!"
"I'll come with you!" River added from behind and followed him out, leaving the couple and Jenny alone.
"R...Rory?" She looked up at him.
"Yes?" He said while wondering whether he should wait for a cab or just dial 999.
"I'm sorry for being so mean to you..." she rocked back and forth on her feet.
"No, no Jenny, you're fine!" He knelt down to her height. They stared at eachother again for a long time until Rory finally gathered the strength to wrap his arms around her, she did the same. They embraced one another for a long time, wasn't she his granddaughter? And didn't that make him her grandfather? She was soothing the worry and anxiety that was overwhelming him from Amy's current condition.
"So Rory the Centurion, what do you besides stand outside of boxes for your wife?" she giggled.
He smiled, he definitely knew where she got her humor from, "Well I'm a nurse. I work at a hospital in Leadworth, well I should say worked... I don't visit Leadworth very often, I'm probably fired by now..." He chuckled, "Yep, too busy hanging around The Doctor..."
"Ya my dad's the best!" She beamed, "How long have you been traveling with him?"
"Oh... I dunno, I've kinda lost count myself..." He chuckled.
"And what about you and Amy? Do you guys have a kid?" She tilted her head to the side.
Rory gulped and took in a deep breath, "Our family ties are a little... strange..." He said carefully.
"I'm a Timelord remember? I can take anything, explain mister!" She smirked with attitude.
Rory's eyes wandered the dark and abandoned store, as if searching for an answer or something else to say! How was he supposed to tell her that their daughter was River Song who was also married to The Doctor!? He thought and thought but he knew lies only always made situations worse. He resorted to one option: confessing was exactly what he was going to have to do.
"Well Jenny..." he sighed, "If you're a Timelord, you understand that sometimes things will happen out of order right?" She nodded, "And sometimes things can be a little confusing and not make any sense in a reality perspective but with tons of explaining... it begins to make sense?" He wondered if the words coming out of his mouth were making much sense, but she nodded again, "what I'm about to tell you might come across as a bit queer alright Jenny?" She puffed her chest out and braced herself, "Jenny, I am your grandfather."
There was a dead silence.
Followed by a loud burst of laughter.
"That doesn't make any sense you silly man! You're joking aren't you!?" She was laughing so hard... but Rory just stood there. She waited for a response and stopped laughing when she didn't get one.
"But the only way you could be my grandpa was if you were my dad's dad... and I don't think you're a Timelord sorry..." she winked.
"Jenny, did you know your father was married?" He asked, her smile immediately flushed and her eyes widened.
"To whom!?" She jumped up and down.
He cleared his throat and looked into her eyes, "To River..." he said slowly.
She stopped jumping.
She stopped moving.
She just stood there, trying to process the information, trying to understand it.
"WAIT!?" she exclaimed, "Then you must be River's parents!? But you guys look so young! How is this possible?" She began pacing in circles and Rory smiled to himself at the resemblance she had to her father when she was jittery and thinking.
"I told you... it's time travel!" He chuckled.
"Ohhhh..." she narrowed her eyes and wagged her finger, "they're going to be in big trouble for keeping this from me!" She said mischievously. "That's so strange... I never would've guessed you were my grandparents!"
"And I never guessed you'd be my granddaughter!" He replied.
And then they both laughed.
"Ay Rory! Jenny! We got two cabs come on!" The Doctor shouted at them from the entrance of the building.
Rory looked down to his wife and then snapped back into reality; Amy was dying.
He put all jokes and smiles aside as he lifted his wife into his arms and began racing towards the door, Jenny following close behind.
"Here, you two take this cab and we three will take the other. You lot get to the closest hospital and we'll follow you there alright?" Rory and the driver nodded.
He laid his wife down on the seat and scrunched her up to sit next to her, holding his hands down on the open wound to try to prevent more blood loss. He began praying and praying that Amy would be alright.
"Why am I squished in the middle!?" Jenny whined.
"Because you're the smallest!" He said back.
Jenny huffed at having to sit between her dad and... Who was she to her then? Her mum? She smirked and thought she would have a little fun at surprising this woman with her insight as the cab sped forward.
"So... You're my mum?" She chirped and looked to her left at the blonde woman.
"What!?" River chuckled nervously and glanced over at The Doctor.
"My mom. You're married to dad so that makes you my mum. Hmm... This is strange... I've never had a mum before..." Jenny stared off mystically.
River gulped and gave The Doctor an extremely concerned look, he returned the same look back at her, "Umm... Well... Uhh...I guess? Maybe...?" She gaped, not finding words to fit in a response.
She didn't have to see the adults to know they were utterly shocked, she smiled to herself mischievously and let them wonder how she did it.
The cab ride remained silent as they approached the hospital, Rory was already jumping out and helping them carry Amy out of the cab and onto a bed to roll her in; her clothes nearly drenched in red liquid.
The Doctor raced out of the cab with the frantic medical Doctors, no more fun and games now; their Ginger was dying.
