Chapter 12: ICU

Jenny remembered racing down the hallways of the hospital with many nurses and Doctors, her father and River and Rory, and lastly, she remembered Amy somewhere on the high bed being pushed through the slender space and finally the Ginger was taken to a room with the words 'ICU' written over the doors. Then all she could recall was her stomach growling from hunger and asking to sit outside on a bench... then slowly drifting off into sleep.

"So how is she Doctor?" Rory and The Doctor asked the man in the lab coat.

"Well we've been doing the best we can to treat her... once again, do you know exactly how she got these massive holes and burns?"

"No idea"

"Not a clue" They lied in unison.

"Alright..." He nodded, obviously unsatisfied with their answers, "I'll have news for you in a while..." He walked away from the room.

The two men heaved, it had been almost an hour since Amy was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit and there was still no word from the nurses inside of her current condition.

"Any news?" River perked from behind them.

"None." Rory spun around to face her, rolling his eyes in impatience and annoyance.

The Doctor ran his hands through his hair and ruffled it again from stress; he had never thought that she would ever end up here... especially if he was the cause...
He let out a long sigh as he took giant strides back and forth down the skinny hallway.

'Please be alright Amy... please... please...' he chanted, tears clouding his vision.

Another hour passed and no one spoke, no one moved, the three of them just sat patiently outside of the room; anxiety nearly killing them.

The surgeon emerged from the ICU with a clipboard in hand, taking his mask off and walking down the hallway, not even noticing the relatives of the patient he had just performed on.

"Doctor!" Rory called after him and stood up.

"...yes?" He asked hesitantly.

"Please... tell me the current condition of the patient Amelia Williams..." Rory was practically begging with River and The Doctor at his side.

"Amelia? Yes we just finished performing on her, she's still unconscious but we've done all we can to stitch her up and make up for the blood loss. We'll be transferring her to a regular room shortly."

The three let out a huge sigh of relief, "So is she okay then?" The Doctor asked anxiously.

"Well... I wouldn't say okay..." he said uncomfortably, "but she's getting better... that was a whole lot of blood loss and some serious injuries... but we managed to patch it together. Her vitals aren't very high at the moment though, we'll have to wait and see if she'll recover from it all..."

"What do you mean?" River asked.

"We've done all we can ma'am... I mean we can fix the patient but we can't force them to come back..." he stared down at his clipboard nervously, "I'm sorry but I have to take this to the computer, I'll be back..." he walked off, clearly disturbed.

The three shared a nervous glance, The Doctor's eyes began tearing up, "Rory..." he choked out the following words, "you know I will do all in my power to save-"

"I know Doctor..." he turned away from the Timelord, unconvinced.

"Rory please, don't be angry with me..." The Doctor pleaded and placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Doctor I'm not angry with you!" He flung his hand off, "I'm angry with myself!" He raised his voice, "I'm a nurse, I'm her bloody husband and I couldn't do a damn thing to stop this from happening!" He yelled.

"Now Rory... don't go blaming yourself..." River tried to calm him.

"Well what else do I do!? Blame her!? None of this is her fault! She's on a hospital bed!"

"It's not anyone's fault! At least not anyone we can blame!" River looked from her husband to her father, "there's no point in blaming anyone... look Rory," she softened her tone, "I know you're mad and angry but blaming yourself is not going to help at all... let's all just pray Amy will be alright okay?" She said compassionately.

"Alright..." Rory heaved and nodded, quickly wiping the tears from his eyes.

They all spun in the direction of the small voice that called out to them from the bench, "...Dad...?" It called again weakly.

"Yes Jenny?" The Doctor strode to her side, followed by the other two.

"I'm hungry... Where are we? What are we doing here?" She asked slowly and sat up.

"Amy..." Rory croaked.

"Oh ya... how is she?" Jenny rubbed her eyes with the backs of her fists after waking up.

"She's... um she's..." Rory tried to answer her.

"Not doing well..." The Doctor completed for him with a worried look.

"Oh," the girl smiled and waved her hand dismissively, "she's Amy! She's strong and filled with courage, I'm sure she'll be fine!" She beamed, bringing a small, but much needed smile to all their faces.

"EXCUSE ME!" A nurse shouted from a few meters away, rolling a bloody patient down the hallway along with other shouting, frantic nurses and doctors.

The three immediately scattered and placed their backs against the wall, sucking their stomachs in to let the injured man pass.

"ARRGHH!" he yelled in agony, coughing up blood, his entire body drenched in the red liquid as if he had been saved from a slaughter. He continued to scream as he was rolled along around the corner to another ICU room.

Slowly, they regrouped near Jenny's bench, her expression scared and horrified.

"Doctor, River, can I speak with you for a moment?" Rory asked and gestured a few paces away from the child; they followed. "I don't think this section of the hospital is fit for a child..."

"Ya no kidding..." The Doctor acknowledged.

"You need to get Jenny out of here... distract her or something, take her out to eat, she said she was hungry anyways... she's too young to be around all this madness..." Rory said sternly.

"And what? You think all we just saw a few hours ago was something other than madness?" River scoffed.

Rory nodded no, "No... that's not what I meant-"

"I know I know," she smirked, "and I agree, we should get Jenny out of here soon, there's no doubt she's still freaked about that man we just saw, I don't think she'll be able to take anymore of it..."

"But I'm not going to leave until I see Amy again," The Doctor demanded childishly.

Rory nodded, "I understand... we can wait until they get her to a room and then you need to get Jenny out of here..."

The Doctor shook his head in agreement, "Alright then, we'll wait."

So they did.
They sat, waiting patiently on the two benches, a father and daughter and duo on each.

Minutes later a nurse confronted them saying the patient Amelia Williams Pond was in room 3412 which was on the fourth floor. The nurses apologized for taking her upstairs, complaining about the unusual rise in patients; some excuse. They all jumped up and rushed to her, desperate to catch a glimpse of the Ginger.

After the doctors and nurses had finished wiring her up and laying her down, they were allowed to enter the small room.

"Oh Amy..." Rory bit his lip seeing her in the whitish blue gown he knew too well. He smiled when he saw her though, just her face, just seeing her there. He knelt down to her bedside and stroked her forehead, fighting tears; he didn't know whether they were happy or sad tears though...

"Is she your wife?" A nurse asked as she came in with a clipboard.

Rory craned his neck around to reply yes but realized that she was asking the other male in the room.

"What mine!?" The Doctor scoffed, "No... mines' right here..." he threw his hand around River and they smiled together, trying to mask the pain that was really inside of them, "Amelia is his wife..." The Doctor pointed down towards the Centurion. Jenny wrinkled her nose and folded her arms, obviously displeased with their show of affection.

"Well you're a very lucky man Mr. Williams..." she smiled as she set her clipboard on a table and began fiddling with some wires.

"Oh I know..." he said softly.

"Oh," she shook her head as if in realization, "hah yes she's beautiful and all, I bet she's real nice too, but I meant you're lucky the suppliers just delivered." She chuckled and left the room.

"The suppliers...?" Rory asked, standing up but his voice faded as he realized she was already out of the room.
He looked to the other couple but they just shrugged, the same nurse came rushing back into the room again with a clear bag of a watery looking substance.

She wore a blue scrub, her hair dark and pulled back and her skin lightly tanned; her badge at the bottom read "Rene Marcus."

"Could you move aside for a moment sir?" She asked Rory politely.
He nodded and walked over to the foot of the bed where the three Timelords stood.

She unplugged the IV bag and Rory screamed, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?" he jumped back over and tried to stop her.

She laughed, "Relax! This is what our supplier is giving!"

"I am a certified nurse, who is this supplier!?" Rory demanded as she fixed the new bag into place.

"It's a new study that's been tested by one of our very own doctors at the hospital, it's an amazing new cure, it speeds up healing by tenfold!" She beamed.

The Doctor let go of River and narrowed his eyes suspiciously, people don't just magically get healed, "And how did you come to discover this healer...?"

"Oh sir I believe that's classified information, we were simply given direct orders from our head and we follow then." She continued to stretch that smile on her face.

"And exactly how long have you been giving the patients this substitute IV?" The Doctor took another step towards her.

"Oh well, this dates back to almost twenty years ago, but for other 'classified' reasons, the Doctors called it off. They've brought it back now though! Just a few hours ago! Probably due to the huge rise in patients tonight, we've never had so many injuries in one night, but it's all okay!" She chirped, "I've gotta go to file some paper work but rest assured, your wife is completely safe," she patted Rory's shoulder and left again with her clipboard.

They all shared a glance, Rory exhaled loudly and slowly, "Okay Doctor," he turned to his right to face the man, "She's here. She safe."

"Alright then," he sighed, moving his eyes away from the door and towards the Centurion, "Let's go out to eat." He said, still suspicious about the oddly perky nurse.

"Let's? What no no no..." Rory scoffed, "I'm not going anywhere, I'm staying here with Amy..." he came to his wife's side and stroked her forehead, not seeing their confused expressions, "I won't leave her side, I never have and I never will..."

"But Grandpa Rory you're going to be so hungry, you haven't eaten in hours!" Jenny left River's side and gripped Rory's hand.

Grandpa Rory? Hm, maybe he liked the sound of that, it made him feel a bit old, but respected, "No Jenny its fine," he smiled slightly and ruffled her bright blonde hair, "Can you guys just bring me something to eat later tonight?"

The Doctor opened his mouth to protest but River spoke first, "Of course we will dad, come on," she grabbed Jenny's small arm and began walking towards the door, "Let's go love," she said as she passed The Doctor, "We'll call you okay, and keep us updated on Amy's health, call my cell whenever something happens or if you need anything, we're still here for you okay?"

"Ya..." his voice cracked as he gulped in a breath, "please, just hurry Jenny out of this bloody mad house..."

"Bye Grandpa Rory..." Jenny said softly in her high pitched voice as River pulled her away; The Doctor nodded at the man one last time and followed, gluing his eyes on Amy as he exited.

"Daddy I'm starving, where are we going?" Jenny whined as she held his hand down the hallway, glancing up at River angrily every few seconds.

"Hm I dunno, good question..." he chuckled and looked down at her, "let's just get a cab to take us where he thinks is the best," The Doctor obviously didn't go out to eat often in London so naturally he didn't know the best place to go.

"That works for me, I just want food, it's been way too long since I had anything to eat..." she rolled her eyes.

River eyed her mysteriously when she wasn't looking, 'way too long...' but just how long? She wondered. No matter though, she was going to get answers soon, how she came to London, what happened to her, when it happened, she was going to unravel all the mysteries of Jenny very soon...
