The massive pyro attack shot so far off course it slammed into the Earth behind the line of Trollgres cutting off any path of retreat. Not really knowing where the attack had come from, the Colonel wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth. "Hit them now," he yelled and phase one of the battle truly began.
There was a cacophony of noise as the Fort erupted with gunfire. The barrage was designed to separate the advancing horde and keep them from focusing on one point of attack. Kenzi and Lauren watched as three Trollgres ran at their position. The hulking forms were driving forward on massive arms which propelled the shorter muscled leg to huge strides. Some were strapped with automatic weapons or clubs but they would be used only as a last resort. Hand to hand battle and the ultimate over powering of their prey was a matter of pride for a Trollgre. There were some rumbling calls as they approached but it was the beat of their heavy bodies hitting the ground that made the members of the crew grind their teeth in anticipation.
The weapons fire from the fort did its job and the assailants fanned out. The more overzealous of the approaching pack drove at any clear shot into the Fort that presented itself. Watching from their sentry points, Kenzi and Lauren knew the fae where moving full out. The women started firing their weapons to drive them to the left as instructed. The impact was so abrupt that Lauren let out a small scream which mixed with the brittle sound of the bone breaking snaps that sang through the air.
The unsuspecting fae smashing into the invisible stone posts at incredible speeds was as gut wrenching as it was strangely funny. One minute a dramatic attacking warrior next the equivalent of a bug on a windshield, "Oh damn," was all Kenzi got out as more of the bounty hunters came into view. She opened the automatic up fully and worked to drive those in her sights into more harsh contact with the hidden traps.
It only took a few more smashed Trollgres for the bounty hunters to change their plan of attack. There was a deafening roar and the large fae pulled around to regroup. The fire behind them was dying however not gone, but it wasn't a concern for the bounty hunters anyway. Retreating completely was never the idea, this was just the time to up the fire power.

Watching from the high turret, Cappy and Tamsin saw the explosives before anyone else, "Aim for the bombs," yelled Cappy. He worked his wards to catch what he could but the first round was going to get through before Tamsin, Gunner or he could stop it.
"Are you kidding me?" yelled Lauren and Kenzi let out a strained laugh in agreement. This was something neither woman ever expected to hear shouted at them in their whole lives. They started shooting in layered patterns in hopes of preventing the worst from happening. They could only focus on their portion of the wall but heard the others in action as well. Moving to press tightly to their protective pillars, the Earth behind them erupted in frightening blasts.
"Crap," Lauren ground out through her clenched jaw, as the concussion of one of the explosions knocked her into the hard face of the stone she hid behind. It opened up a gash on her cheek but the doctor was relieved that there was no real serious damage. Looking to Kenzi, she found the girl had cuts from the flying debris but that was all. The women spun back to the front and fired into the ever darkening horizon. They saw the next wave of explosives rise in the air but burst open at the edge of the outer defenses.
There was a distinct sound of rapid machine gun fire as the large explosions blossomed on the edges of the field of stone posts. Everyone in the fort aimed to keep the Trollgres from getting any length to their throws. Tamsin had been put up in the turrets for a reason. Had she been at her full strength the men below her would be cowering, but lacking her normal attacks she was only left with her battle skills. She had skills from ancient times to modern warfare. She held the big gun in her arms and it felt good. With total focus she watched for a projectile to be tossed. Seeing the explosive she aimed and blasted it out of the sky. It would have been a hell of lot easier to take out the fae doing the throwing but that wasn't the assignment, so she looked to take out the next round of projectiles as best she could.
As good as Tamsin was, there was damage done to the Fort that she just couldn't prevent. The attackers had picked up on where her position was, and although they never saw her, they adjusted their attacks to a point she had no way to defend. The bounty hunters also started to lay down cover fire, forcing the whole crew to back off, and if they could switch position after ever few bursts of fire.
Cook had moved quickly down the line. As soon as the damage got too bad in a spot he forced more stone to rise and repaired the barrier. Problem was there was just too much coming at them, and he was running out of energy. He decided that he would have to quit playing defense and buy some time with offense. Moving towards the spot the Trollgres were focused on he waited for the next barrage of weaponry. He heard their whistling approach. Pulled back his arms and then throwing them forward. The wall of stone in front of him moved with his motion, slanting backward and then crashing forward fast. The projectiles where slapped by the wall and sent back where they came from. There were startled yells and then several large explosions. The Stoneling cursed hoping he hadn't killed any Trollgres with his little stunt. If anyone was going to survive this night, then they needed the Trollgres alive.

Lila was ashamed as she felt slightly out of practice with this part of battle. She was watching the far wall and there was little of the explosive action the others were seeing. That was of great concern to her, it was just too quiet. She focused harder and finally saw them. A group of fae was slowly approaching, testing the spaces in front of them and winding their way around the invisible traps. A Trollgre specialty was blending in, and these sneaky bastards were masters at the task. A slow grin came to the cupid's lips and she raised her crossbow.
Her husband had been good enough to pull the cupid's favorite weapons when this all started and he secured their home. The man reached back and ran a loving hand down her arm then stopped to reach over and grab something from the corner. The gremlin lord handed his wife a long leather sash which held forty iron tipped bolts. Her long bow was here too but she needed rapid fire more than power and the bolts were more compact to work with. She winked at the love of her life and he smiled turning to watch the rest of the wall knowing fully that his little cupid had this fully in hand.
The unsettling sound of an arrow of any size embedding with a thick thud next to your head is an experience you never forget. Lila had each Trollgre's attention quickly; she then set about driving them back. The iron tipped darts zipped around the fae attackers like angry insects, humming and occasionally leaving nasty burning sting as they cut the skin of their target as they passed by. The Trollgres spun and ran. The care they had used to approach was lost and in their panic to escape they rammed painfully into the stone posts they had cautiously worked through. There was no reprieve from Lila's attack until the bounty hunters were well back from the Fort and no longer an immediate threat.

The chi enhanced blast that fired from the fae Bo had attacked rocketed with such force that everyone was thrown several feet backwards to crash forcefully into the ground. Dyson had been farther away from the blast than the rest, and recovered faster than the others. With a snarl he righted himself in time to see the thin fae running for his life away from the Fort. He was hunched over and his arms were not swinging to his sides. Dyson concluded that there had been damage done to his person when Bo forced the massive discharge of his fae weapon. Looking to the side Dyson saw the Trollgre he had been assigned to take out had not survived his attack. He should have felt bad but figured he would just have to make up for it by killing both their share of vampires. Dyson recognized the reasoning of his wolf form and just went with it.
Getting his balance he moved forwards finding the wiggling form of General first. The jaws of the beast had found the neck of the Trollgre Bo had crashed into and he had started trying to shake the dead fae to get more fight out of him. "Boy, you hold a grudge, leave him." Said the wolf and the dog turned at the sound of the dominate voice with a bit of a snarl. "Hey, no sass." Growled Dyson and the dog backed down. Dyson was nothing if not Alpha. Bo chose that moment to shoot off the ground ten feet ahead of the others.
"Where the hell is he?" Her eyes were wild and very blue. She had shot a great deal of juice into the fae and was low on energy. The vampire toxin had to be doing its thing as her voice was two-toned. Dyson grabbed her and pulled her to him as she wobbled on her feet about to crash back down to the ground. The succubus felt the trickle of energy that left the wolf. There were feelings for her there, but nothing like what they had shared before. Fighting the urge to drain the wolf of his chi Bo pulled away with a mumbled thanks and then surveyed the area. Still in full succubus mode, Bo asked again, "Where is the fae?" Dyson pointed and went to answer when the night filled with noise.
The gun fire had been expected but the massive explosions caught them all off guard. They turned to climb the rock but thought better of it. Flashing their backs to the open desert during an attack was not a good choice. Choosing instead to follow General's path and run the long way around, they could also look for other backdoor attempts the hunters might be trying. Crossing low they kept their eyes open. It would be impossible to hear anything but flares of auras or smells on the breeze would alert them to any unfriendly visitors. Finding the corner that General had used to work his way outside they were about to enter the maze of hidden posts when General started to whine.
It was such an unusual sound, Bo and Dyson felt their hair stand on end understanding that this was a warning. The fae beast raised his head to the sky and his whine became a howl, mournful, haunting and booming, the sound resonated over everything else. Looking up into the dark sky, the bright moonlight was only disrupted by the fast motion of dark clouds flowing from the foothills.
Time was up.
Kenzi was firing her gun when the glow made her pull her head to the side. Looking down she saw her cross glowing brightly, she would have stood straight up but Lauren reached out and pulled her back down. It wasn't that it hadn't happened before but just that it hadn't happened since she had been in the lair of the wanderer. It was startling see it again now. This wasn't the sign she was looking for but she would not question it. This time remembering to stay low, Kenzi spun, and with a nod to Lauren ran towards the shop. The doctor who was equally shocked by the glowing cross opened up her gun and covered the girl's movements. She gave a half grin and hoped the rest of the plan was ready to go.
Kenzi hit the side of the building and found the large battery pack, squeezing the clamp open as she attached the metal to the terminal. As if an odd extension of her illuminated accessories, light flooded the compound and the surrounding area. Flood lights piercing the darkness and flashing into the sky. With a yell of understanding the crew signaled the end of the first phase and that phase two of the plan needed to kick in. This was going to be a moment of strategic brilliance or the fastest path to death they could have ever imagined.
The Colonel took a moment to steady himself, three things needed to happen in rapid succession. He had not seen the approach of the vampires, but one of the crew must have had some warning. It didn't really matter now with the lights on everything needed to be put in motion and it all started with him. He waved one hand over the other and the glamour around the Fort fell revealing the stone battlements and outer defenses of the Fort to anyone looking on. The spaces between the stones looked enormous and the small deterrents between the rock formations would be nothing for the Trollgres to move through. The gremlin sagged as the heavy burden of holding the cover of the whole area vanished from his shoulders. He felt light headed and sat down hard to rest. He would not let himself recover for long however his troops, no his family, needed him.
Gunner who had been forced to cover fire duty had quickly switched weapons to grab the RPG launcher when Kenzi started running. He should have been more focused on his section of wall but he had been watching over her through the whole operation and did not miss her turning to run for the signal lights. The Colonel's cover would be dropped and then it was up to Gunner.
When the glamour had released, Gunner knew he only had moments to find what he needed. "Shoot now," snapped Tamsin besides him, but he ignored her. He didn't see anything close enough to the Fort to fulfill their needs. In seconds the Trollgres were going to figure out that the Fort was now wide open for attack. They would determine the light thing was not a trap of some sort and they would charge in taking no prisoners. The Jinn had said they were to be taken back to the council but Lauren had showed him the orders she had pulled from the first bounty hunter she encountered. The dead part in dead or alive had been emphasized and Gunner didn't think things would be different now. "Come on," the valkyrie hissed now sounding close to violence and was fighting not to grab the weapon from his hands to open fire on something just to break the tension.
"Hold on we don't want to scare them off." he still remained focused but smiled as he tossed the valkyrie's words back at her. He felt her tense a bit. Suddenly he saw it, "There," he said at almost a whisper as he blew out his breath, then with an easy trigger finger he launched the specialized grenade into the night. The object flew amazingly high into the empty sky and then burst open with nothing but a soft popping sound. Like some fireworks the main shape fractured into a dozen smaller projectiles, each shape spun wildly in the air as it fell back towards Earth. Tamsin and Cappy looked to the sky and then turned to the half fae with concerned looks. "Wait for it." Gunner said with a smile.
The Trollgres did not have a given leader per say. There were older and more experienced members amongst the horde and they were looked to at times like these. The orders had been plain, attack the place and bring back everyone inside. The unspoken message was that bodies were preferred over active live captives. The employees that had discovered this mess were both AWOL and so were the first transfers and the Jinn hired to provide transport. The mission had been a cluster fuck from the start. But the battle was turning out to be so worth it. Most of the hunters hadn't been tested like this in eons and it was a pure joy to be experiencing it.
Those feeling of challenge were all but crushed as their prey just seemed to give up in one shot. The camouflaged traps uncovered as well as every weakness in the defenses revealed in the glaring lights that flooded the area. It said something that no Trollgre rushed forward, even the rawest of their members had learned that what these fae offered could not always be trusted. The oldest of the group started walking forward and had made it about ten steps when a swish of a rocket propelled weapon broke the lull. They waited for the explosion to happen driving them into what had to be a trap, but nothing sounded.
The growling rumble of the old Trollgre's voice crept through the group, "Well what are you waiting for boys. Let's take us home some bounty." There were bursts of laughter and they started to walk forward, then they started to jog and just as there was need to run the bodies stated to fall from the sky.
Lauren watched as the modified grenade flew off. Gunner had heeded her advice and had aimed the weapon for the broadest release of the phosphorescent dust. It had been a great idea. The mist like state that the vampire used to take flight moving through a cloud of this concoction would be deadly. As they returned to corporeal form the dust would be mixed with their solid shapes and the stored light energy of the dust would burn the vampires from the inside out, just like swallowing their own little piece of sunshine. Kenzi had let out a whimper when the grenade did not explode in spectacular fashion. Lauren just smiled, "Wait for it." she whispered but she readied her gun any way. The doctor swallowed hard as the line of attackers started to move forward. That is when the bodies began to fall, like burnt out shells, they fell between Fort and the advancing Trollgres, the blackened shapes with flecks of glowing embers peeking out of every inch of skin.
"Holy shit, Doc." Said Kenzi, "Silent but deadly." She let out a laugh but her cross flashed and the girl spun to see that while they had got some of the second wave of attackers, the vampires were here in numbers and coming from all directions. "Vampire!" she yelled and her voice joined the yells from inside and outside the fort.
The Colonel stood and pulled Lila to his side. The third step had been for the vampires to become a threat to the Trollgres and from the sound of it that step had been met. "My love," he said and pulled her into a passionate kiss. Pulling back he let out a mighty roar and jumped from the tower to join the fight. Lila pulled out her long bow and let the iron lined arrows loose on all that threatened the ones she loved.
"Cook, get me down!" yelled Tamsin and her stomach shot to her throat as her half of the rock tower lowered fast. Jumping off she yelled, "Good man, thanks" pulling her blades and throwing knives she took off on the run. As a vampire took shape before her she slashed through her enemy and moved off looking for the next threat.
Returning the tower to full status, Cappy moved over to take Tamsin's spot and worked on his wards to secure the towers and the air space above the Fort, thinking of everyone but focused on protecting Lila and Gunner as they rained damage on the group below. It was a dangerous spot to be as the phosphorescent dust was out over the field of battle. Cappy saw the mist-like mass moving rapidly toward Lila and he twisted his hand into a fist and slammed it into his other hand. Iron spikes shot from the edge of the tower and a squeal sounded as two vampires found themselves impaled on the iron outshoots. Making a pulling motion while removing on hand for the other, the iron pushed back into the rock and the bodies of the vampires were forced off the end and fell in a heap to the ground. Kenzi who was after a vampire of her own, slapped the flat of her glowing blade on the bodies in rapid succession as she ran by, with a satisfying whoosh each burst into flame.
It had not taken Kenzi long to forgo her gun for the warmth of her blade. The whispered "Sol" was only a tradition as the sword was glowing hot before she could finish the word. The steady launch of the powder laced grenades told Kenzi that Gunner was still busy and she relaxed with that knowledge. She found herself checking the tower all night to make sure he was okay. A vampire came crawling down a large wall of rock and launched itself in her direction. It was like slow motion and she fought the urge to drop technique and swing at the fool like he was a baseball. Somehow that did not seem respectful use of such a great sword so she spun and beheaded the blood sucker as she gracefully moved to the side.
"Come and get me you…" it was Bo's voice that drew Kenzi's attention. She turned to see the succubus hauling ass with five vampires on her heels. Bo was grinning but she didn't really have an exit without taking on some type of damage. Kenzi let out a loud whistle and Bo shot a glance her way. The succubus turned to make her way through a break in the rocks. The monster size barbed wire was laced through the opening but the shadows hid it. Not seeing the danger, Bo stretched out and headed for the opening fast.
The thought of Bo hitting the wire was terrifying and Kenzi yelled for Lauren who was fighting nearby for help. As Kenzi was running to intercept and idea came to the girl and bolted forward, "Jump Bo, jump now damn it." The succubus heard the warming and switching position only as a fae could, slammed her foot into the closest rock and used it as a launching point to help her clear the spiked wire. Kenzi did not stop as Bo flew over her head, she had dropped and was sliding along the ground toward the wire. The vampires were just far enough behind and didn't get a chance to change direction in time.
Reaching the wire, Kenzi pushed her sword blade against the thick metal strands, "Sol, Please" she yelled and the sword glowed brightly transferring its energy along the maze of metal. Four of the vampires crashed into the mesh and the energized metal sliced through them as their momentum carried them through the deadly wires. They fell in big chunks on the other side. The last of Bo's pursuers avoided the carnage by switching to mist form at the last second.
Bo did not stop running and she smiled to see Lauren was running towards her. Pulling up Lauren grabbed and tugged the succubus into a firm embrace reaching up to press Bo's head to her shoulder with one hand while aiming her weapon with the other. The mist of the last vampire reformed directly above Kenzi, Lauren's small shot gun was ready and blasted three times. The iron laced shells blew away the majority of his body. Kenzi blinked and then skittered back to avoid the mess. Bo leaned her head back and said, "My hero," to Lauren who rolled her eyes and raised an eyebrow before kissing the succubus hard.
"Hey, some love for the bestie." Kenzi said in a mock whine as she got to her feet and started to take off. Pulling back, Bo shouted, "Hey thanks," a drifting "Yeah, whatever," could be heard over the din in Kenzi's general direction.
Leaning in again Bo let Lauren capture her lips a second time. The succubus felt the power of emotion directed at her from the doctor and the chi had flowed into her like the best of life had to offer "Doctor you be careful okay." she whispered as they parted lips. It was Bo's turn to pull the doctor close; a Trollgre had gotten into the fort and was running their way. Those guys didn't miss a chance to grab a bounty. Bo pulled the large fae's chi and dropped him to the ground in a few seconds. Kissing Lauren's head she forced herself to run off as to not overpower her lover with sappy emotion or let her need to protect overwhelm her.
The Trollgres had been hit by the majority of the ground troops of the vampires and it was a brutal fight. When the bodies first fell from the sky, they thought it was a weird type of old school, think Sparta like warning, but then the live vampires arrived and the fight was on. While the Trollgres were stronger, the numbers of vampire they faced were daunting and the blood fae had speed on their side. Lusty taunts came from the bounty hunters as they attempted to lure the vampire closer.
Lila was watching and with her bows did what she could to help push the vampires within reach of those heavy hands. The hissing of the arrows hitting vampire nearby or just missing them caused several of the vampire to dodge in the wrong direction. She smiled as she forced more and more of the enemy into the Trollgres waiting hands. Lila was so focused on her mission she missed the two vampires climbing the far side of her tower.
The vampires after Lila were halfway up the tower when they heard a soft thump and a fast whizzing noise. They looked up and embedded in the stone just above them was a hook and pulley like object. The next they knew a gremlin was between them holding a metal bar. He winked at the two and smiled placing a finger to his lips. He clicked the hidden button on the bar and two spikes shot out the ends, with a twist of his wrist, curved cactus like barbs shot out of the smooth outsides of the spikes. The vampires' eyes bulged and then the Colonel twisted the bar again retracting the spikes and ripped two large holes in the flesh of the blood drinkers. As the two injured vamps slowly fell backward, the gremlin lord reengaged the sharp metal and spun the bar quickly and with enough force to slice off their heads. He quietly pushed off hoping his lovely wife had not been disturbed.

In the foothills, Blood knew something was wrong he could feel his body being drained as more and more of the loyal swarm were killed. "Master we must go to them. Call them back to try another time." Malek was seated watching the far off battle in silence. Blood almost ran forward, "Malek, my master, please. This could weaken you; there is the chance you will lose everything." This got the big man's attention. The fae's voice was touching in its sincerity and concern for his well-being. He missed the under tone that Blood was slowly being destroyed by the battle loses.
Standing to walk towards his chosen second, "Blood, my boy, don't you understand?" he pulled the younger man to the opening of the cave. The sight of the battle and what it's aftermath would offer was breathtaking. "This is my perfect world. You have helped me create a moment of paradise. Red Valley is running crimson with blood again. I," he paused and then said, "No not I, we, we will be fine. I will provide you with all the blood you can drink as I claim the fae flesh waiting for me." Blood was frozen at the man's side.
"My master, what of the swarm, our brothers and sisters," he asked softly.
The Malek chuckled, "You will just have to find me more. Other fae will come to investigate and we will have at them as well."
"There is the town of humans, can't you…" stammered Blood as another wave of energy drifted from his body. More of the vampires were dying.
"Humans are not for us. It is the taste of fae or nothing for our lips." The Malek said dreamily.
Blood realized at that moment he had called what remained of his swarm to their death, if not tonight it would be the next battle. They had all pledged loyalty to this mad man and he felt nothing for them but lust or hunger. The vampire tried to do something rash and turned biting hard into the man's neck. There was no blood, rot and fibrous dry flesh was all he found. The Malek moaned and then reached up and stroked the man's face. With a huskiness to his voice he said, "Later my second, later." A harsh wave of pain hit Blood as he pulled back, he felt huge groups of the swarm die all at once. Swaying and then falling to the ground, he looked to his master for help but the man was gazing longingly out the stone opening waiting for the moment he could make his move and gather the dead to feed.

The Trollgres were holding their own and the numbers of the attacking vampire was down but the battle was not ending fast enough and the crew was running out of ammunition and tricks. Cappy had come down from the tower and Kenzi had joined Gunner as the humans were tiring fast, they offered cover fire as best they could. Lauren refused to leave the battle and no one even Bo could make her. The vampires had wised up and were popping in and out of the Fort to make lightning fast strikes and without some quick thinking and reactions there would have been casualties. The danger to them all had increased dramatically, "Damn," the fast accent of Cappy spoke to his anger. He was casting wards but it wasn't doing much now as the attacks were so small scale. "We need to hit them in mass or they will pick us all off one by one."
"What is going to make a bunch of vampires herd together?" growled the Colonel.
Bo who had been standing behind the group, reached up and touched her neck, quickly she asked, "Do you have any of those phosphorescent grenades left, the real ones not the powder ones?" The group nodded they did, but all explained at once that the vampire were not close enough together to use them. Bo shushed them all. Turning to Lauren, "Baby you know this place better than anyone can you get us out of here and to a…" Lauren eyes flashed to Bo, dropping to her neck and then back to her eyes. She nodded.
"I can get us to a rock formation that is somewhat like a small box canyon. You will need to trust me, it's a wild ride to get there." Said Lauren.
"I trust you with my life Doc, with my life." Bo reached out and grabbed Lauren's hand. Turning to the rest, "We will need you to handle the Trollgres after we pull the vampires." They nodded but all had questions in their eyes.
Bo and Lauren stood and turned only to run straight into Tamsin and Dyson. The wolf said, "And we go with you." There would be no argument; he was just stating a fact. Lauren opened her mouth to say something but Tamsin leaned in and placed a finger on her lips. Bo's eyes flashed for a moment and Tamsin giggled.
"One stop first, we will meet you outside the shop." said Bo. The small group split and they ran to their destinations. Bo and Lauren arrived at the safe room door in less than a minute. "Trick, Jinn, it's Bo. Trick your granddaughter and unaligned…"
"Everyone knows that, tell me something new." Yelled Trick through the door.
"Well I know that you cut the gin in the Dahl by…" Bo didn't get to finish the sentence.
"That is a lie." Trick said as he threw the open door. It was a point of pride that the Dahl served only the best to it's customers and Trick got totally offended at any suggestion he tampered with the goods. Bo used this point to tease her grandfather quite often.
"Hi Gramps," said Bo and the man smiled, "I need your blood." The man was no longer smiling.
It was a few minutes before Bo and Lauren reached the bay doors and found both Dyson and Tamsin pacing. "What the hell took you…" Dyson growled but both women held up a hand as they marched passed cutting him off.
Lauren pointed to the cross county motorcycles, "They are gassed up. I suggest that we go tandem so there is someone watching from the back." With a nod the doctor directed Dyson to the big bike left by the first bounty hunter that had come to the Fort, she found her bike with all her modifications. They rolled them out. As they approached a small patch of wall, two long arrows slammed the ground in front of them and they turned to see Lila on the tower. Lauren gave her a wave which was returned by the worried cupid. The Colonel ran over and handed a bulky pack to Tamsin and Bo. Dyson and Lauren would be doing the driving. Lauren said, "If they don't follow in a reasonable amount of time we will be back as fast as we can." It did not escape anyone that the crew was being left pretty shorthanded, but this was the best plan they had.
"No worries my child," the Colonel pulled the two arrows from the ground, "but if you don't come back sooner than later Lila is going to be really ticked off. So please hurry."
With that the Colonel used a bit of gremlin knowhow and opened up a space between the rocks by breaking the wires. They rolled the bikes through and watched as the wires reformed. Seeing the concerned looks, the Colonel laughed, "If Lila doesn't see you coming back, Kenzi and Gunner will."
Bo looked at her friends and said, "Look, if this works like I think it will, there will be mass of vampires on our tail. The speed of the bikes should keep them from landing on us or grabbing us from the sky, but they will be swarming for lack of a better term. When we reach the canyon, open up all the sunshine bombs and weaponry we can. Okay?" Everyone nodded.
Lauren handed the small metal canister to Bo, it had Bo's blood mixed with her grandfathers. The canister was pressurized and would act like an aerosol can. "Dyson can you find the wind?" she asked. He nodded, she continued, "Please let us know when it shifts towards the vampires." Lauren had insisted on helmets and everyone donned a skullcap at least. They waited and of course the wind seemed to die at that very moment but then the breeze touched their faces and Dyson nodded. With a quick couple of taps to the tab of the can, two jets of dark red miss hit the air. The motors turned over and the machines lurched ahead as fast as they could go.
The Trollgres were back to back as the vampires were running attacks at them as they were hitting the crew. Frustrating was not the word for it. As one after another of the strikes were taking their toll. The crew was not much better. Twice Cook had just hardened his skin in time to block bites that would have taken him down. Kenzi and Gunner were trying to keep the vampire back but the speed of these attackers was something they could not get a solid target on.
The effect of the blood in the air was fascinating to watch. It was as if a wave washed over the swarm. They turned one after the other, some stopping long enough to be grabbed by a Trollgre or taken down by a crew member. Then in mass they screeched and fled in the direction of the smell. Some taking flight, others on the run, it was as if they couldn't help it. Drawn towards a prize most never ever thought they would have a chance to obtain, essence of the Blood King himself.
On the bikes it was hard to tell if the plan was working or not. But when the first vampire appeared in the road before Lauren it settled the questions. She pushed a lever forward and the blast from the guns affixed to the sides of the front tire blew the threat away. Lauren gunned it and the bike shot forward. Bo let out a little yell and tightened her grip around the doctor's waist.
There were blasts of gun fire from Tamsin on the back of Dyson's bike. She was peppering the sky and side to side. She had several large magazines and was going to use every bit of her firepower to provide cover. When any vampires looked to focus on Dyson's bike Bo would spray the air and the attackers would refocus on her.
Lauren pushed the bike as fast as it would go. She thanked God that she had planned this extreme route as the twists and turns did not allow their path to be predicted. Bo did manage to get some shots off to the side but the bumpy ride mostly had her holding on for dear life.
Lauren gave a shout and Bo saw the darken rock formation coming up fast. With a quick move Bo reached into Lauren's pocket and pulled out the small wrap of duct tape. There was a crashing noise as Dyson was forced to lay his bike down in a managed skid. Several vampires slammed had them from the side. "Go, Baby, Go," cried Bo as she used the strong tape to hold the tab down on the can and a fog of the blood mixture poured out into the night. Every vampire was now focused on them; Lauren weaved the bike and even jumped it in an effort to get where they needed to go avoiding attack after attack.
With a wave of her hand, Lauren indicated that she would be laying their bike down and Bo readied herself. With all her might she threw the can at the natural enclosure. Lauren then brought them down into a safe but painful skidding stop.
