Chapter 30
Or,
Of Bras, Small things and Flowers.
"Prongs!" Sirius Black screamed, barging through the boy's dormitory door. He sauntered over to the four poster bed which belonged to James with an elegant grace, which was soon disrupted when he tripped over a piece of material lying about a metre away from the bed.
His scream filled the room once again as he face planted the hardwood, which was soon joined by another manly scream, and a high pitched squeal.
"Lily?" Sirius shouted, his eyes darting down the culprit which caused him to fall. They landed on a bra, relatively big in size, decorated with mini flowers and swirls. "Hey, this is kinda big." He said with a smirk.
"Sirius if you do not get out of this dorm within 3 seconds I'll staple your privates to a broomstick." A threatened voice, which could only belong to Lily Evans, warned. "One." She started counting down.
"Hey! It was a compliment, and I'll have you know, your bra is the cause of my injury."
"Two."
"I can't get out of the room in one second, LilyFlower, that's impossible."
"SIRIUS GET OUT!" She roared, while laughter filled the room. "Shut it, Potter. Or your privates will be next to Blacks."
"Oh, hey Prongs, having fun?" Sirius cheered.
"I thought we discussed the rules about women in the dorm, boys?" Remus said, appearing in the doorway with a happy smirk on his face.
"Yes, James." Sirius mocked, climbing up off the floor, "You have to warn us in advance."
"You never did!" James protested, his head poking out of the curtain which surrounding his bed.
"Excuse me, I told you ever morning we left this dorm that I would be getting some." Sirius retorted, smirking cheerfully at his best friend.
"At least he had the decency to close the curtains." Remus interjected rationally, although his eyes were twinkling with amusement.
"Can we please stop discussing this?" Lily said loudly, sounding remarkably ticked off.
"Why Lily, didn't you get off?" Sirius teased, leaning against the door frame next to Remus.
"SIRIUS!"
"What? It's not my fault James sucks in the sack."
"I believe it's Lily who'll do the sucking." Remus winked as Sirius' bark like laughter filled the room. James couldn't help but laugh along, while Lily could be heard muttering furiously.
"Remus Lupin you sicken me." She said, "And if the pair of you dogs don't get out of this room within the next 5 seconds, I'll kill you."
"Sirius is the only dog in this dorm." Remus chuckled, as Sirius barked and ran out of the room, very much like an over excited puppy who had just spotted their owner.
"I best go tame him." Remus sighed dramatically, "You kids play safe." He sang, shutting the door behind him with a loud band, so James and Lily knew they had left the room.
"You really are a shit friend, Pads." Remus laughed, following his friend down the stairs. "Couldn't you tell they were busy?"
"I didn't realise until I was face to face with Lily's bra!"
"Yet you still stayed?" He laughed in reply, shaking his head as he sat down in an arm chair. "You are so lucky Lily was topless-"
Sirius interrupted, "How? I didn't see anything."
"Otherwise, she would have killed you." Remus finished, once again shaking his head.
"There's no way James would let her."
"Sirius, they were in bed together, James would have sharpened the axe for her."
"Okay, fine. There's no way you would have let her!"
"I wouldn't stand in the middle of you and the axe holding Lily Evans." Remus said, feigning a scared look.
Sirius sighed loudly. "Marlene, then. McKinnon wouldn't let her."
"McKinnon wouldn't let who do what?" Marlene's voice came from the top of the stairs.
He turned and grinned when she walked down the stairs, "You wouldn't let Lily Flower kill me."
"Depends why you were being murdered." She teased, sitting next to him.
"He walked in on Lily and James getting it on." Remus smirked.
"YOU WHAT?!" Marlene shouted, looking both appalled and amused at the same time.
"I wanted to speak with Prongs about something, and I tripped over Lily's cute little bra."
Marlene's face was a picture.
"I don't think you're supposed to call other girls' bras cute, Pads." Remus chuckled, shaking his head at the idiocy of his best friend.
"No, no, it's not that." Marlene said, "Lily's bras are cute. But…I'm just a little bit surprised that Sirius is actually in on piece."
"Why wouldn't I be in one piece?" Sirius looked confused.
"You stopped Lily and James from having sex." Remus and Marlene said simultaneously.
"…So?"
"How would you feel if you didn't get off?" She asked, looking very amazed that she was having to spell it out for him.
"I don't know, I've never experienced that, and I never will."
"So cocky." Remus muttered.
"Imagine if you were interrupted while trying to have sex with your beloved, it wouldn't feel great would it?"
Sirius thought about this for a moment. "No, I suppose not."
"Finally! The penny drops!" She chuckled, "I'd ensure you sleep with one eye open, Black."
"Can't I just sleep with you instead?" He retorted, waggling his eyebrows at her as he scooted along the sofa so there was very little space in between them.
"Maybe, if you're good." She grinned.
"I'm known for being good."
Remus snorted at this. "I thought you were known for being an 'admittedly handsome yet arrogant playboy wanker'?"
"Which is a synonym for good." Sirius said, looking blankly at him.
"Sirius, do you even know what a synonym is?" Marlene asked, trying to contain her laughter.
"Yes. It's a word which has the same connotations as-"
"You have been spending far too much time in the presence of Remus and Lily!" She burst into laughter, being unable to hold it in any longer.
"Oh, shush McKinnon." Sirius told her, sticking his tongue out childishly.
"Make me."
"Okaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, I've heard enough." Remus coughed, jumping from his seat. "I have…I left a book-"
"You just don't wanna see me and Sirius make out, do you?"
"No way." He said, practically running from the room and into the hallway. He knocked into somebody, who yelped loudly and swore as all of the books and parchment she'd been carrying landed around her.
"Oh, I'm sorry." Remus babbled, walking over to the person who he'd knocked over. "I was just in a hurry."
"Why? The common room on fire?" The girl retorted, standing to her feet. She was nearly a foot shorter than Remus, even though she was wearing considerable high shoes. Remus was surprised that she could stand in them, they looked painful.
"No," He laughed, "I just wanted to avoid the make out session which is undoubtedly taking place as we speak."
"Oh, valid reason. I'll forgive you." She grinned, brushing some dust from her skirt, "So, you're saying I shouldn't go in there?"
"Not unless you wish to be blind." He grinned back, "I'm Remus, by the way. Professional clutz."
She laughed softly, "I'm Dorcas. Professional dork." She bent down to pick up her papers and books, Remus suddenly felt guilty and started to help her, accidentally bumping his head with hers.
He flushed pink, "I'm sorry."
"Don't worry about it, you clutz." She smiled, holding all of her stuff in her hands. They covered her face and it was obvious she couldn't see.
Remus took the books from her arms and loaded them in his, "Where you off?"
"The library now that I know the common room is being used." She said, "But I can manag-"
"I owe you." He said, striding off in the direction of the library. Dorcas' heels could be heard slapping against the stone floors as she jogged to catch up to him.
"It's not necessary, it was an accident."
"Don't be silly, besides, I was heading to the library anyway." He smirked, "Besides, if you were a little bit taller, I wouldn't have knocked into you. Midget."
"Good things come in small packages!" She protested.
It was a good thing that Marlene and Sirius were the only people in the common room because they were making a lot of noise.
As soon as Remus had left, desperate to escape from the make out session that would undoubtedly break out, Marlene had tackled Sirius sideways on the sofa, and climbed on top of him, mischief glinting in her eyes.
"McKinnon!" He barked, "I don't think we can make out in the common room."
"We're not going to make out."
"But Remus left oh so politely." He pouted, fluttering his eyelashes at her.
She lent down and popped kisses all over his face, before ruffling his hair madly.
"No, McKinnon! Not the hair!" He said, swatting her hands away desperately, "Anything but the hair!"
She laughed loudly, continuing to attack his hair. It was funny watching Sirius Black squirm beneath her as he tried to fend her off over his precious hair.
"Right. Game on." He warned, grabbing her wrists as they made for another attack on his hair. He wrapped his legs around her waist and flipped her over, anchoring her to the sofa. He grinned down at her, eyes full of amusement, as his hands went to her waist and jabbed at her sides.
"No!" She squealed, thrashing beneath him, "That's so unfair."
"Play with hair McKinnon, and you're bound to get punished." He said, continuing to tickle her as her high pitched giggles filled the room.
She was panting and completely out of breath as Sirius roared with laughter watching her try to break free. She'd managed to grab a cushion from the sofa and she brought it up so it collided quickly with his face.
"Hey!" He said, caught off guard as she slinked from underneath him. Sirius, however, wasn't that wounded by her attack and his hands clamped around her waist, bringing her back toward him.
She laughed, wriggling and squirming in his arms. "Alright, alright, we're even!"
"You ruined the treat I had planned." He pouted, trying to hide his smirk. She was still clamped in his arms, pressed against his chest, "Meanie."
"Dropping your pants doesn't classify as a treat in my book."
"Clearly you haven't seen me drop my pants." He smirked.
"Oh, no, that's where you're wrong. You took them off in transfiguration last year."
"But I've grown since then."
She smacked his arm. "That is disgusting."
"Oh, be quiet, Mars."
She waggled her eyebrows, "Make me."
"You're determined to get a snog from me, aren't you?"
"It's like you can read me like a book."
He leaned in slowly, smirking as he traced her lips with his own. Just as she was starting to respond, he pulled back and jumped up, grinning like a mad man.
"Sirius!" She whined, pouting.
"What? I told you I had a treat for you."
"A kiss classifies as a treat." She protested.
"What, and pants dropping doesn't?"
She threw the cushion off his head again. "Prat."
"Shut up and come with me."
"Why?"
"Didn't I tell you we were going on a date, McKinnon?" He rolled his eyes dramatically, "Godric, don't you listen?"
Sirius Black wasn't usually the dating type. He'd never been on a proper date before, so it was a bit difficult for him to construct appropriate ideas (that didn't involve sex or alcohol) and for him to carry them out.
He also knew Marlene wasn't the stereotypical girly girl. She didn't seem too interested in romance and shenanigans, but he hadn't quite sussed what she was interested in (bar sex and alcohol). The funny thing was, Sirius and Marlene hadn't even nearly had sex. Not for any specific reason, they just hadn't. They both seemed happy messing about with each other, flirting a hell of a lot, and just being in each other's company.
Sirius couldn't comprehend the feelings he had whenever he saw Marlene. It wasn't, what he called, 'a James'; he didn't think of Marlene every single moment of every single day, like James did with Lily; he didn't go out of his way to please Marlene, like James did with Lily. But Sirius also didn't pull 'a Remus'; he didn't pretend not to have feelings when he did, like Remus did; he didn't gaze shyly across rooms and blush, like Remus did.
But Sirius felt something for Marlene. Something he was sure he hadn't felt before. Something he was sure James and Remus hadn't felt before. It wasn't love, it wasn't lust, but something. Something which made his face break out into a genuine smile, something which made his heart test the strength of his rib cage, something that made him feel like- every time he looked at her- he was being born again and experiencing her for the first time.
Which is why he felt like he couldn't do a stereotypical date. He couldn't take her to Hogsmeade and thrust bouquets of roses on her. He couldn't take her on a picnic down the Black Lake, giving her cakes and sandwiches he'd watched the House Elves construct. He had to show her how he felt about her.
So, he took her on a motorcycle ride.
Getting out of the grounds at Hogwarts was no challenge for an ultimate prankster, so when Sirius dragged a startled Marlene out of the grounds, nobody batted an eyelid.
"Where are we going?" She asked when her giddy boyfriend dragged her in the opposite direction of Hogsmeade.
He rolled his eyes, "You'll find out in a minute, be patient."
"Since when was patience a quality of a Gryffindor?" She scoffed, letting him tug her along the pavement, like a dog on a well needed walk.
"Since now." He turned around to grin at her; that happy, genuine grin which Marlene loved. "Turn around."
She did as she was told and Sirius slapped a blindfold over her eyes. "Hey! My sight!"
"It's only for a minute, McKinnon."
Which was true.
Sirius turned her around and led her down a smaller, winding path. He stopped abruptly and wandered over to his motorcycle; Hagrid had been admiring it and he said he'd keep an eye on it while Sirius was at school. He climbed on and fiddled with it a bit, when it suddenly roared with life.
"Oh dear God you've brought me to a dragon." Marlene said, still standing about a metre away with the blindfold still on.
He laughed, turning around and with a flick of his wand, the blindfold was off.
Marlene's jaw dropped, "What the hell is that?"
"My motorcycle, McKinnon." He grinned, his eyes alive. "Now, hop on."
Marlene stood, fixed to the spot, her eyes raking over the bike.
"Not afraid, are you?" He teased.
"Not a chance." She said, approaching him and swinging her legs over the motorcycle. She was a little uncertain and apprehensive, she'd never been on such a contraption before, and she had no bloody idea where Sirius got the idea from.
"Hold on." He told her, revving the dragon like engine.
She did as she was told, wrapping her arms around his waist. She had no idea what it did. But, she was soon informed. Suddenly, with a jolt, the motorcycle sped off down the path which led even further away from Hogwarts.
"Sirius, I'm not sure whether you're able to see this or not, but there is a tree directly in our path." Marlene said, panic setting in. This was a very dangerous thing to be on with a very reckless Gryffindor.
"Calm it, McKinnon." He said, rolling his eyes and shaking his shaggy black hair from his eyes. With another jolt and roar, the bike was no longer touching the pavement. It was rising, up and up, soaring over the tree Marlene was so worried about moments ago.
"Oh Godric!" She cried, the breath being knocked from her. Her stomach plummeted as they continued to go higher and higher, but it felt amazing. She could see why everybody loved flying so much, if it made you feel like this.
She was gasping for breath, taken in by the view. It was simply spectacular. It was like they were chasing the sun; streaks of orange and red, with the occasional fleck of blue, were left in the motorcycles trail.
She looked down and she couldn't believe it. Everything looked so small, so insignificant right now, in that moment, to her. She honestly felt alive as Sirius steered around, a stupid grin plastered on his face.
"You alright, Mars?" He called, the wind rattling with his breath.
"Yes! This…It's…This is…" She stammered, a bit lost for words. Marlene had been on dates. She'd been to Hogsmeade, she'd been to dances, on picnics, and she'd even been to a Muggle cinema, but nothing compared to this; nothing could compare to being isolated from the entire world, feeling so alive simultaneously. It was-
"Spectacular?" Sirius suggested, turning his head slightly to see her face. He smiled at her pink tinged cheeks, her wild hair, and her bright blue eyes sparkling with joy.
"No." She shook her head, smiling back, "This is perfect."
He laughed once again, steering the motorcycle down to the ground as it landed with a soft bump. He parked it in the same spot as before and leaped off it, pulling Marlene with him.
"Sirius that was the best date ever." She said, unable to stop her smile. "Thank you."
"You don't have to thank me, McKinnon. I enjoyed myself just as much." He turned around, bent down slightly, and then spun around dramatically handing her a two flowers he'd just picked from the Earth.
"Flowers? Really?"
"A date isn't a date without flowers." He grinned, slinking his arm around her waist as they started to walk back up to the Castle.
Both Sirius and Marlene couldn't stop smiling. They chatted, about nothing in particular as they walked, smiled slapped onto their faces. Their eyes were bright with happiness, they had a real healthy colour to their cheeks that only came with being out and alive in the outdoors, with somebody you unknowingly love.
