After spending the night talking to Jack Frost for the first time, Sarah couldn't stop thinking about him and the story he had told her. Once when the next day came, Sarah woke up and started her day normally; which meant spending time with her brother Peter, but the thing was, when Peter asked their mother if it was okay to go out and play in the snow again, he noticed Sarah was acting quite strange when they went.
For example, when he made a snow-ball, getting ready for a snow-ball fight, Peter saw Sarah easily distracted; looking around as if she was trying to find something. Because of this, Peter asked Sarah what was on her mind. At first, Sarah was going to tell Peter what happened last night; finally meeting Jack Frost and all, but then she quickly remembered her last conversation she had with Peter about him.
It all played back in her mind vividly. The conversation merely ended with Peter's last words, saying that Jack Frost was just a made up character. With these words, Sarah couldn't help, but imagine Jack feeling extremely sad if he ever heard Peter say that.
After waiting for an answer from his sister, Peter asked Sarah again.
"Come on Sarah, this isn't like you.
What's on your mind?"
Still being silent, whether to tell her brother or not, Sarah started moving her leg back and forward; thinking. She thought, even if she did tell him the truth, regardless, Peter wouldn't believe her, even if she kept telling him that she saw him. As sad as it is, if a person were ever to see something mysterious, magical, or maybe even scary, and told someone about it, the other wouldn't believe them no matter what. The most common saying would be, "I'll believe it when I see it." It just goes to show, that you can't make someone believe in something that they themselves don't believe in.
And…if Peter doesn't believe; what's the point in telling. So, shaking the feeling off, Sarah faced her brother.
"Oh, nothing's on my mind.
Well…at least it's not that important anyway.
I was just…admiring the snow…" she said smiling; while looking up.
At first, Peter didn't think she was telling him the truth, but then again, as he thought about his sister's response, Peter figured she really was telling the truth. Reason why, well, to Peter, as long as they knew each other, he knew that Sarah always had a weird fascination with snow. Which…kind of explained why she developed a belief of someone creating it; hence to his knowledge, Santa Claus.
"Ok, I'll believe that.
After all, you do like snow," Peter said.
"Yeah," Sarah responded with a giggle.
"Anyway come on, let's have a snow-ball fight," Peter said; having his pile of snow ready.
"Sure, this time I'll beat you," Sarah said excitedly.
She then bent down and scooped up some snow; already forming it into a ball. Once when Sarah was ready, a determined look appeared upon her face.
"Ready?" she asked.
"Ready," Peter said; taking aim.
With that said, Sarah was going to throw her snow-ball, but then all of sudden; Sarah's eyes were focused more to what was in back of Peter than Peter himself. To her surprise, the person that was standing in back of her brother was no one other than Jack Frost. Since he was there, Sarah wondered just about how long he was there standing.
"He must have shown up when I was looking up at the sky…" Sarah said in her mind.
Noticing that she was distracted again, Peter lowered his snow-ball.
"Sarah, what are you looking?" he asked.
"Uh?" Sarah responded; not knowing what to say.
Pretty soon, Peter followed Sarah's gaze; turning his head back. Forgetting the concept of believing is seeing, Sarah had a slight panic that Peter would see Jack and freak out. But when she saw that Peter was unknowing looking directly at Jack, no response or awareness that Jack was there was given. As painful as it was, another child basically saw right through Jack; though so Sarah won't detect his sadness, Jack simply looked back and smiled, hoping for the best. But evidently, there was nothing.
"Hmm…I don't see anything," Peter stated.
He then turned his head back to Sarah.
Since Jack was in her presence, Sarah couldn't resist telling; not caring if Peter would believe her or not.
"It's Jack Frost, he's standing there…right there in back of you," she responded pointing.
"Huh?" Peter said; raising an eyebrow.
Obviously he was confused by his little's sister response.
"What are you talking about Sarah?
There's nobody there," Peter exclaimed.
Even though he said those words, Peter couldn't help the feeling but to look back again; thinking he might have missed something. But once he did, there was still nothing that captured his eye.
"He's right there," Sarah repeated.
After another second, Peter then turned back to Sarah. He didn't know if his sister was playing a joke on him, or whether if she really was serious in saying that Jack Frost was behind him. Since he didn't know which idea to believe, Peter was a bit annoyed.
"Sarah, there's no one there," Peter repeated.
"If Jack Frost was really there, I would be able to see him wouldn't I?" he continued.
"Well…from what mom told me is that you have to believe in order to see," Sarah said.
"Aaaand since you don't believe, you can't see him," she finished.
"Is that so?
Well believing would be hard for me since I've never heard of him. I mean come on, there's no proof, so that's why I think he's made up," Peter said.
"So, you think I'm made up huh," Jack said in his mind.
He then bent down and scooped up some snow. It could be seen that Jack had a smirk on his face; no doubt showing that he was up to something. Once when Jack made his snow-ball, he then took aim.
"Proof?
Of course there's proof, all this snow is proof," Sarah said.
But before she could say anything else, Sarah saw that Jack threw his snow-ball, making it hit the back of Peter's head.
"Hey?" Peter said; putting his hand over the back of his head.
"That's for calling me made up," Jack said out loud.
"You made him mad," Sarah said; throwing a slight giggle.
"Really?" Peter said; still not believing his sister.
As Peter was rubbing the back of his head, he then looked over his shoulder again. For one thing, he figured it must have been someone he knew that might have thrown the snow-ball, but then as before, there was no-one there.
"What the…" Peter said in his mind; he wondered, what was going on?
As Peter kept staring aimlessly at the sight, Jack was staring right back. Unknowingly, when Jack threw the snow-ball at him, Jack added a bit of his power of bewitchment onto the snow-ball, making Peter act the way he is. As Peter continued staring, frozen in his position, he started to think about what Sarah said. He wondered now, could…could it possibly be true? Once when the question came to mind, he then remembered what he said himself. Peter remembered that he said maybe Jack did exist but couldn't be seen for a reason.
He wondered now…was the reason because he doesn't believe?
So taking a chance, he opened up his mind, believing he was there; forgetting if he would be right or wrong. After all, like all children, it would be great to see something new and possibly magical. At this rate, Peter's state of mind started to change, he wanted to see Jack.
NO, Jack WAS there; he knows he's there. Once when Peter was in this state of mind, small snowflakes appeared and landed on his noise, as this happened, a brief sparkle appeared around his eyes.
After another few moments of silence, Peter's eyes widen since now Jack came into his vision; finally being able to see him. With nothing to say, Jack simply crouched down, looking at Peter.
"Hello Peter," Jack said.
"Its…it's you, Jack Frost," Peter said astonished.
"Yes, it's me," Jack said wanting to laugh.
"I told you he was real," Sarah yelled; running over to the two.
"Ok, you win Sarah," he said to her; though Peter then turned back to Jack.
"Uh sorry I didn't think you were real," he laughed weakly.
"Forgive me," he continued.
Jack then gave a smirk and got up.
"Well I'm still pretty mad," he said to Peter; but by the tone in his voice, it was clear that Jack was just playing.
"Sorry, can I do anything to make you feel better?" Peter insisted.
Still playing around, Jack pretended to think of a solution; though it didn't really take him any time at all to say something.
"Well there could be something that you can do," Jack said smiling.
"What is it?" Peter asked.
Jack bent down and scooped up some snow, having his usual smirk.
"Let's have a snow-ball fight," he said.
"Yay, I wanna play too," Sarah added in.
Jack then responded with a chuckle as Peter and Sarah got ready to play. As the two children had their snow-balls formed, it took no time for the game to start. No, as soon as the snow-balls were made, they were automatically thrown; hitting a nearby target. With the game going on, and the children laughing and giggling; having fun, everything looked wonderful for the first time ever. The children were happy…now having some-one to play with, and Jack felt more alive than ever; not only because he wasn't alone anymore, but because he was now able to play with his niece and nephew.
With so much excitement going on, Emma couldn't help but hear the commotion that was coming from outside. So, due to curiosity getting the better of her, Emma got up from her chair and walked to the window. And, as soon as she saw her children around playing, she suddenly noticed that something was quite off.
"Jack?" she wondered.
Due to the way her children were acting, she wondered, was it possible that Peter and Sarah could see him? Pretty soon, after watching them chase after Jack; trying to hit him with a snow-ball, Emma smiled; knowing that her children believed in him.
For a brief moment, Emma was happy; finally Jack wouldn't be alone, and pretty soon, within time, everyone will know his name. Everything seemed to be wrapping up quite nicely; the four of them living as a happy family. But, as Emma continued to see Jack, her happiness suddenly sank into sadness. As she continued her gaze, it seemed like Emma's mind was playing tricks on her. At first she saw her daughter Sarah, smiling and running, but when Emma saw her jump on Jack's back and he started to run; giving her a ride….Emma instantly saw her brother's old self; how he originality looked before the snow-white hair and pale complexion.
Because of this, it reminded Emma of that day. She thought, if that day never happened; there wouldn't even be a need for her children to have a reason to see him. They could have met him years ago. Jack would've been alive; he would've been spared from the pain and loneliness that he has to deal with. In truth, it must be hard…to try to hold on to your sanity while having to hide your wounds with smirks and tricks. Emma knows that she shouldn't blame herself, but due to knowing Jack's story; the pain still managed to find its way into her heart.
As Emma's gaze went down, with herself looking at her hands, Jack then stopped and noticed his sister's sadness. And, by examining the look in her face, Jack knew what she was thinking about. Due to remembering feeling doubtful, Jack gave a heavy sigh, and without realizing it; he kneeled down; letting Sarah get back to the ground. She was having so much fun to not notice Jack's sudden quietness. Still not moving from his position, Jack then turned his head; once again looking at his sister.
"Maybe…maybe it is for the best…for Emma's sake. After all, I always hated seeing her like this….
Tomorrow is my last day…"
