Annabeth's PoV

David kept giving me strange looks all throughout the drive back to his home.

It took a lot of coaxing to get him to come with us, but eventually, he got in the car and we were on our way back to his home.

I tried to keep up some conversation while Percy drove. They must have seemed pretty mundane to David, but I just thought these would be helpful things to know about this demigod.

"So, David," I cleared my throat trying not to sound so casual-not-so-casual. "Where do you live?" I could literally feel the waves of awkward pulsing throughout the Prius (new and de-hoof-printed).

"I live in the suburbs. Dayview." He looked at me strangely. "Shouldn't you know? You're driving there after all."

I shrugged. He had a point. "Well, yeah, but that's pretty far from school and downtown, you know? Why do you live so far?"

He got a peculiar look on his face, like he smelled something bad. "I don't actually know, exactly. My Gram always said that the city had bad people, bad things, things that I should stay away from." His face got sour. "She was thinking about sending me to some boarding school. Real ugly sounding name, fancy something place, though. Actually, I think the name was something like that," he snorted. "Yancy! There we go!"

"Hey!" Percy exclaimed. "Oh, I went there in sixth grade!" He glanced back at the two of us in the back seat. "Ugh, it sucks. I hated almost everyone there."

"Perce, not now," I gave him a look. He rolled his eyes and turned back to the wheel. "David, go on."

"Um…oh, yeah! Okay, so Gram was convinced sending me there would be perfect, until this guy came and told her that it wouldn't be a good idea. She was pretty pissed and-"

"Wait, wait, wait," I stopped him. Who was this guy? Could this be some divine intervention, if you know what I mean. "Who was this person?"

David shrugged. "Some dude from Social Services."

"What did he look like?"

David thought for a moment. "Erm…I know he was really good looking-" his head shot up quickly. "I'm not gay, though. Don't- I'm not gay, okay?" I rolled my eyes and nodded for him to continue. "Oh, um, he was handsome, salt and pepper hair, blue eyes, and I remember his sneakers the most. Real fancy sneakers on him."

I couldn't help the laugh that bubbled out of me. It was just so like him. "Percy, you thinkin' what I'm thinkin'?"

He smiled. "It's got to be him. Who else would do something like that?"

David looked back and forth between me and Percy. "Who? Do you know something I don't?"

Just those words made me want to laugh and tell him just how much he didn't know.

"It's nothing, Percy and I just think we know the Social Services dude. A close family friend." That was actually pretty close to the truth, actually. Just bit of an understated truth.

But then again, can you imagine going up to a friend who might be a demigod and saying, 'hey, so, when you were like 14 some government worker came to your house right? Oh, yeah, well, he's just my cousin, kind of. Like, thrice removed, I guess.'

That would be shameful and weird.

'Right, and my cousin is also the god of the roadways, travelers, merchants and thieves and is capable of blowing your head off, or worse. Plus, he has two snakes called George and Martha. And did we mention he's a god?'

Now that would be weird.

"I think this is the one." Percy's voice snapped me out of my reverie.

David peered out. "Yup, this is my house." And with that, we stepped out into the evening sun.

Percy's PoV

The house was a small, one level paneled home. The porch had two wicker rocking chairs, a small coffee table, and many potted flowers.

The house was covered in colorful blooms- azaleas, tulips, daffodils, petunias, sunflowers, roses, and lots of impatiens*. And before you laugh about me knowing the names of all the flowers, you should know that my mom loved planting flowers.

The small path up to the house was lined pinwheels and small, cute statues of bunnies and frogs and adorable little garden animals.

I was strangely reminded of May Castellan's home in Connecticut.

Ditching the haunting, bitter memories of that past, I followed Annabeth and David into the house.

David's Grandmother looked to be of Asian descent, but I couldn't put my finger on what nationality she was.

"Hello, David," She greeted her grandson. She saw me and Annabeth and her eyes hardened just a fraction. "Percy. Annabeth. How are you two?"

"Fine, thank you, ma'am. How are you?" Annabeth said it with the charm of a Southern Belle, and I almost expected her to drop into a curtsey.

"Lovely, thanks, dear," David's Grandmother had melted.

"Um, Missus…" Annabeth started, trying to approach David's Grandmother.

"Mrs. Lin." She supplied. "Sit, sit down. Do you want anything? Water?"

Annabeth took a seat in the living room on an overstuffed armchair. I sat in a small wood chair and David flopped onto the couch.

"Mrs. Lin, we have a problem. David. Or, more like his parents." Annabeth said to Mrs. Lin, even though she was leaving the room.

Mrs. Lin froze in her tracks. She turned around slowly and sat down in a chair across from Annabeth. "Did Chiron send you?"

Annabeth was visibly surprised, but she nodded. "We also know that Hermes came here."

Mrs. Lin turned to me. "Percy, what did you say your last name was?"

"I didn't," I replied. "but it's Jackson."

Mrs. Lin nodded. "I've heard of you, mister. Hermes came here and told me something was brewing. Said it wouldn't be safe, letting David go to that school. He knew you went to Goode, and said I should send David there too."

Hermes said that? Things were getting stranger and stranger by the minute.
