Chapter 9: The Storm

The ship was jostled violently by the storm as it sailed towards the Fire Nation. The crew were beginning to get nervous at the endless currents of tearing wind and large waves that pummeled against their ship.

"Captain Masaru, I do not think our ship can take much more of this abuse. This storm only seems to be getting worse," Lieutenant Jee reported warily as the rain turned into a torrential downpour.

Masaru looked up from his maps with a determined expression. "I can see that. Tell the helmsman to keep a steady course and bring me my sister," he ordered, amber eyes glinting in the lightning flash.

The Lieutenant hurried off to relay the Captain's orders, although he was clueless as to what the young woman had to do with the situation. Nevertheless, he carried out his orders and sent someone to retrieve the mysterious passenger.

Rain poured relentlessly over the heads of the Navy crew, as they awaited their Captain's orders. Masaru was busily discussing a course of action with the distraught Helmsman. All eyes turned to the hatch as an officer emerged with a mildly irritated female behind him. Whispers began to circulate through the men as she was indifferent to the raging storm around her.

Kirasari begrudgingly walked up to her brother with a mildly inquisitive look. "Glad you finally decided to grace us with your company," Masaru drawled sarcastically earning a dead stare from his bemused sister. " I am assuming that you have extremely valid reason for summoning me, considering it is hours before dawn," she deadpanned accusingly as lightning cracked overhead. "Terribly sorry to have ruined your much needed beauty sleep," he quipped flippantly as she narrowed her eyes at him. "That is very childish and petty Saru, considering you are soon to be a shipless Captain," she shot back at him calmly before turning and walking away.

"You do realize if this ship goes down, your free ride home goes with it. Because after all, I will be as you say a 'shipless Captain'," Masaru rebutted lazily with a challenging look at his sister.

The crew watched in silence as the siblings had their silent standoff. No one knew what would happen next or what they should be doing.

Finally, Kirasari sighed in exasperation as she turned back to her brother, "Well what do you want me to do about it? Bend the waves into submission?" Her tone was incredulous and sarcastic as she met her brother's gaze. Silence was all the confirmation she was given as her brother looked at her in knowing expectation.

Wordlessly, the 15 year old began shrugging off her outerwear before walking up to her brother and shoving the discarded clothes into his arms along with her boots. Cold irritation emulated off of her in waves as she walked away.

Wasting to time, she froze the ship's deck into a solid sheet of ice before quickly skating about, sending the towering waves in opposite directions and redirecting the wind currents.

Lightning flashed overhead menacingly as she busily defended the ship.

Kirasari whipped around as she caught sight of the raw lightning shooting in the direction of the crew members. Without a second thought, she dove in front of them, effectively blocking them from the deadly assault and taking the brunt of the electrical current.

The crew members watched in stunned panic as her body curled in on itself and began to shake violently. Suddenly without any warning her eyes snapped open revealing her glowing violet orbs before she uncurled from her contorted fetal position. Wordlessly she gazed into the storm defiantly before rising to her feet and propelling herself up into the air from the stern of the ship.

Stopping about 50 feet into the air, she began battling the storm. Her movements were quick and mesmerizing as she flitted about through the air like an experienced dancer.

Masaru kept his amber gaze on his little sister, convinced now that his eyes were certainly not deceiving him, as he watched her seem to manipulate the storm into her control. His suspicions and doubts were nullified as within minutes the sky and storm were clear.

Kirasari slowly lowered herself back to the ship and cushioned her landing with Airbending. Hands shooting out to the rail in order to steady herself as she touched down. The crew regarded her with caution as she sagged against the railing. Copious questions were brought to head as they began to make sense of what had just occurred.

Masaru cautiously approached his sister, "I guess our father was right, you really are something," he stated as he brushed her wet hair out of her face. She gave him a tired look before turning and heaving over the side of the ship. Turning back to him, "Thats just a nice way of calling me a freak," she muttered as blood began dripping from her nose.

The Captain looked at his sister with carefully concealed concern as he wiped the blood off of her face. "Don't be so dramatic Sari," he drawled before pulling her to her feet and hoisting her into his arms. She grumbled unintelligibly about not liking being manhandled and all the miserable embarrassment she would suffer as a result. Her comments only brought a cheeky smile out of her 19 year old brother as he carried her back into the hold of the ship.

The other officers shared meaningful looks while they watched the two siblings as they disappeared below deck. Lieutenant Jee turned to the other crew members, already knowing their unspoken questions, because he was asking the exact same question. Everyone wanted to know how in Agni, had the young female Bended the actual storm?

It was common knowledge among the crew that their Captain's sister was a powerful Firebender, but they never dreamed that she could also Bend water and Air. She showed all the signs of being the Avatar, but they also witnessed first hand the lack of ability to Bend earth back in the Earth Kingdom. Which led them to another question, what in Agni's name is she?
