Jumping ahead a few years from when Larry and Imogen's wedding took place. Just two more chapters after this one, and an epilogue. What will happen between now and then? Any guesses? THANK YOU for sticking with this and continuing to read!

Legacy
October, 1925

This isn't going at all how he thought. But then again, none of this is going at all how he thought.

If he had known, ten years ago, how his life would have been, he might be tempted to put a pistol to his lips.

It isn't first time such thoughts have clouded his brain.

Larry groans and paces back and forth in the strange room where he's been told to wait.

He hates hospitals. Not that he has a great deal of experience in them, but nevertheless, he hates them.

Instead of being at home, waiting in the comforts of his study with a cigar and brandy while his wife delivers his child upstairs in her room, as is how it is to be properly done, he's here…at this London hospital, because she's having "complications" of a sort.

Of course, it's been no easy task.

Imogen has had a great deal of difficulty, getting pregnant. Larry will never forget his father, ringing him up and giving him the name of a doctor, some man who helped Mary when she and Patrick's replacement were having difficulty conceiving. Just what he needs, his father butting in into this of all things.

Though perhaps it's not a surprise? His father is concerned about the "Grey family legacy". His father is also spending a great deal of time in Downton village, flirting with mother of Patrick's replacement. Good Lord, how many stories has his father blabbered to that old bird?

But finally it happened. Imogen finally became pregnant and the hour is finally here, when his son will enter the world and his father will finally get off his back about the issue.

Only there are complications.

And Imogen must undergo an operation of some kind.

He honestly doesn't know how he feels.

He…tolerates…Imogen (it could be far worse; she could be screeching harpy or an addle-brained chit). She doesn't deny him his husbandly rights, and she's learned by now that her pouts don't get her anywhere with him, so she doesn't whine as much as she used to.

And she does seem to…tolerate him, in return. He might even dare say that she…likes him. (The bloom has gone off the rose a little bit, since they married, but all in all, they are not…unhappy).

If something were to happen to her now, well…he's sure he would grieve…in some way.

The doors to the room open and he turns to the doctor…and is immediately taken aback by the woman who greets him.

"…SYBIL!?"

Good God…what…what is she doing here!?

"Larry…" she murmurs and steps forward. "The surgeons had to perform a caesarian section on Imogen, but she's alright, she's in recovery as we speak, and the baby—"

"YOU WORK HERE!?" he can't get over the shock.

She straightens herself a little. "I'm training," she explains, with a lift of her chin.

"Training?" he sputters. "Training for what!?"

"To be a doctor," she calmly explains. "Now as I was saying about the baby…"

A doctor. Of course. Of course she's training to be a doctor. Because being a nurse wasn't "radical" enough, she has to be a doctor too! And a doctor IN LONDON! Last he had heard (which was several years ago) she and her paddy husband were in York…or was it Manchester? Or Liverpool? THE POINT BEING is that they WEREN'T in London! But here she is, training to be a doctor, involved in some way with the delivery of his child, and of course, of course, he can't help but notice as he looks down at the protruding belly poking out from her long, white coat…PREGNANT AGAIN, HERSELF!

Good God, will he EVER see her when she isn't swollen with child? Does she and that bloody mick do anything else besides rut like two beasts? How does she have the time, amidst her so-called "training"?

"…She's a healthy child, though small, which is why we want to keep a close watch—"

"SHE!?" he interrupts, staring wildly at Sybil.

Sybil pauses but nods her head. "Yes, you have a daughter. Congratulations, Larry."

A daughter.

A daughter.

After everything he and Imogen went through…

His legacy, the Grey family legacy, is wasted on a bloody girl.
