jc: ROLL STORY!
"Amano-san? Please come up and introduce yourself to the class!" The teacher gestured for me to step into the classroom. I slowly walked over to stand in front of the class.
"Kon'nichiwa, my name is Amano Yuki. I'm pleased to make your acquaintance." I said as monotone-ly as I possibly could, hoping to hide my nervousness. I've transferred to many schools before, but the first day is always nerve-racking.
"Let's see...Your desk will be…Ah! There is an empty desk beside Kimura-kun. Kimura-kun, please raise your hand." I looked towards the back of the classroom to find a boy with short black hair and dark blue eyes. I walked over and sat down beside him.
"Hello Amano-san." Kimura-kun smiled at me politely,
"Welcome to the school."
"Thank you." I gave a small nod, then I turned to the front of the classroom as the teacher started the lesson.
After about 30 minutes of class, I could feel my focus drifting away. My previous school had already covered this unit, so I was relatively bored. No wait, make that extremely bored. And since I was so bored, I began humming softly to myself as I twirled my pencil between my fingers. I had a song stuck in my head again, just like usual.
"Please stop humming, it's hard to concentrate with the noise." Someone next to me whispered, trying not to disturb the class.
"Huh what?" I blinked and glanced at the person who spoke. Oh it was…uh…I searched my brain for a name…oh right, Kimura-kun.
"Sorry!" I whispered back. Suddenly my pencil slipped from my fingers and tumbled onto the floor. I quickly leaned over to pick it up when my elbow bumped into my pencil case and that too tumbled to the floor with a crash. *facepalm*
"Amano-san, Kimura-kun, what is all the noise?" The teacher turned away from the blackboard to stare at us.
"Um, I-"
"For causing such a disturbance in class, please see me afterschool." The teacher cut me off then returned to the lesson. I sighed as I finally gathered up all my stuff and sat back in my desk. I heard Kimura-kun sigh beside me and I gave him an apologetic glance, but he had already turned his attention back to the textbook.
The day continued and was pretty much uneventful. Though I did catch a lot, and I mean A LOT of people's attention. I guess it was probably because I was the new girl, but still! Don't you people know it's rude to stare?
Once the bell signaled the end of the day, I stayed in the classroom until everyone was gone (well everyone but Kimura-kun) and approached our teacher.
"Well, since you were both well behaved for most of the day, I won't keep you back for too long. After you finish classroom cleanup, come see me in the teacher's lounge and then you're free to go." And with that, the teacher walked out and closed the door behind her, leaving us alone in the classroom.
"Why classroom cleanup? And what do we have to do?" I asked.
"Classroom cleanup is assigned to either the daily chore group or the detention students if there are any. Which are us, for today."
"I'm really sorry that I got you in detention as well…"
"It's ok. Anyways, all we have to do is clean the blackboard, put away the desks and chairs, dust and organize the bookcase, and write down the attendance." Wow that's a lot…I don't know if we can even finish it all today. But even so, I rolled up my sleeves and prepared to get to work.
"I'll um…do the blackboard, so can you start with the desks and chairs?" I glanced at him and he nodded. I grabbed the chalk eraser and proceeded to wipe off the rows and rows of notes.
By the time I was done the bottom row, my arm was sore and my muscles were screaming, but I refused to stop. I mean, how useless would I be if I couldn't finish such a simple task? As I had to erase higher and higher, I was forced to stand on my tip toes. Once I got to the last row, I couldn't reach the top anymore, so I ended up jumping and erasing it bit by bit. Just when I started jumping, I felt the eraser disappear from my hands. I spun around to find Kimura-kun standing right behind me and finishing up the top row. Of course, he was tall enough to reach it.
"Thanks…" I muttered, feeling kind of short. He gave me a small smile but didn't say anything.
We just continued our cleanup like that, just each doing our own thing and not really speaking other than the occasional "thank you", "can you get that?", and "hold this". The room was relatively silent, but I didn't mind since it was one of those comfortable silences.
"Amano-san, can you get the duster? I need to dust off the bookcase." I glanced up and nodded.
"Um, where is it?"
"In the closet in the back corner."
"Oh ok." I walked over and tried the handle, but the door didn't budge.
"Um, the door won't open. Is it locked?"
"I don't think so, it might be stuck. Try pulling on it a bit harder." He joined me at the closet and pulled. At first there wasn't any movement, but then the door suddenly creaked and snapped open. I lost my footing when the brooms tumbled out and I fell backwards. My back hit something soft and I heard a muffled "ow" beneath me, hold on…beneath me?!
"Ah! Sorry!" I quickly scrambled off the poor boy that I had crushed under me.
"I-it's ok…" He stuttered. I stood up, brushed myself off and offered him a hand to pull him up.
"Are you ok?" I looked at him worriedly, he seemed kind of red in the face.
"Uh um, yeah…ahem, let's uh, clean the bookcase." He awkwardly grabbed the duster under the pile of brooms.
"Alright." I bent down beside him to put away the textbooks after he dusted off the shelves.
After we were finally done the bookcase, I stood up and wiped off my hands. I glanced at the clock to check the time…oh my god it was already 4:30?! I still have to buy groceries and pick up Ai at the daycare! Well I have until 5:00 to pick her up, but wait, I still need time to make dinner. ARGH WHAT SHOULD I DO?!
"Hey, Kimura-kun?" He looked at me,
"Do you think we can be done before 5:00?" He looked thoughtful, then he said,
"You can go first, there's only the attendance sheet left and I can finish that up. Go and tell the teacher that you're done, then you can go."
"Are you sure?"
"Of course, you're in a hurry right?"
"Well kind of but-"
"I'll be fine." He gave me a small smile.
"Um thank you. I promise I'll make it up to you someday!" I waved bye and rushed over to the teacher's lounge.
Thanks to Kimura-kun's help, I managed to pick up Ai and get everything else done on time. I went to school the next day and the first thing I did was thank him again. He smiled and nodded, but didn't say much. For the next couple of days, we never really talked unless we had to and we just both focused on our own studies. I never found the right moment to return the favour though… Then a couple weeks later, we had a seating change, so we stopped talking altogether. Occasionally, I would think about ways to return the favour, but he never seemed to need my help with anything. Oh well, someday when he needs it, I'll make sure to help him to the best of my ability.
