The Truths That Tie.
Chapter 5
Remember, Remember.
Toby sat in an over stuffed armchair located in his newly had bedroom. The seemingly red themed room was a sight he was growing used to. A large plush bed, an array of books and an annoying clock ticking on the wall. Tan accents highlighted the room with a piece of furniture here, or some curtains there. He rubbed his temples as a headache came creeping on slowly. This past few weeks had been terrible. More for his sister then anyone else, but he was sure everyone was having a tole put on them over this.
The guilt ate at Toby the most. He knew he couldn't have gotten her out any sooner, and it was a miracle they had sprung her out at all. She was just so pale and helpless, it was sickening. Sure, she had recovered much faster then if she were home, but it hadn't been easy. Sarah had actually woken up just a day or so after being brought to the castle. Toby recalled that night dreadfully.
It must have been late, glancing at Sarah's glass ceiling, only stars were visible. A candelabra was lit on the nightstand near the bed and a small fire illuminated the room. Toby had refused to sleep in his offered room on the off chance his sister awoke. Right as Toby started to nod off in his own chair, Sarah did just that. It started out with a quiet groan, and Toby stood to stand closer to her.
"Sis?" Toby whispered lightly.
He watched as she opened her eyes just a crack, then wide open. Her pupils were dilated and she began breathing heavily. She began mumbling incoherently in a panicked voice.
"Sis, its alright, you're safe," Toby assured her, only she didn't stop. "Sarah!" Toby tried laid a hand over hers to try and still her.
"No, no no no! Not here...again, please!" Sarah cried out and was near tears.
"Reiko! Zilo! Help me, Sarah's awake!" Toby yelled at the door, but didn't dare step away from the bed. Sarah tossed about and within a few moments, Reiko and Zilo came bursting in the door. Reiko rushed over and tried soothing Sarah the best she could. Zilo went to the other side of the bed and began mixing something from the glass containers sitting on a small table.
"What's wrong with her?" Toby huffed out.
"I expected something like this, she is bound to have some side effects from this whole ordeal,"Zilo didn't look up from his work as he answered Toby. "Reiko, hold her face still."
"I hate we have to do things this way," Reiko mumbled and she did as her brother asked, her hands held firmly on either side of Sarah's face. Zilo held her jaw and poured a tiny amount of liquid into her mouth and closed it.
"What's that?" Toby glared at Zilo.
"It should calm her back down, it won't hurt her," Zilo answered simply.
Within just a few moments she did still herself, her breathing became more normal and she relaxed. A creak of the door gave way as someone else entered the room.
"Your Majesty," Zilo greeted quietly. "The girl has awaken, she seems to be in some shock, as expected."
The Goblin King walked into the room dressed in a similar attire to what Toby had seen him in when he first appeared. Toby watched him for a moment before looking back at Sarah, her eyes were closed but he couldn't tell if she was sleeping or not.
"Of course," he simply answered, and with that Sarah eyes snapped wide open again. It only took a second for them to lock on Jareth.
"No!" she yelled again and thrashed herself as far from him as the headboard would allow. She nearly toppled off the bed in her panic. Toby watched as the Goblin King took a step nearer to her, as if he were about to help calm her down. As soon as he was in arm's reach of Sarah, she lashed forward and hit him hard across the face.
Toby and everyone else aside from Sarah stilled for a moment. Sarah began yelling again.
"Stay away from me, I hate you!" She then began to cough and gasp loudly, like she couldn't get enough air. "Stay...away...your fault..."
Jareth put his hands up lightly as to show her he wouldn't touch her. His face was once again impassive. He backed away slowly facing them all. Toby glanced at Zilo and Reiko whose faces had paled considerably.
"What do we do now?" Toby asked all of them. Zilo and Reiko just exchanged glances. Sarah thrashed a bit more and her breaths came out in heavy gasps. The Goblin King spoke up after watching her for a moment longer.
"Make her forget."
Toby sighed again. Sarah had several more episodes similar to that one, and every time, Zilo wiped them from her memory. He still remembered though, and so did everyone else. It was hard, when Sarah woke up earlier that day to pretend none of it had happened. She seemed to mellow when she awoke, and figured they were all waiting to see if she would have another meltdown, but so far so good. Zilo has explained to Toby he would have to act as if it were Sarah's first time waking when she did finally wake up. A light knock on the door broke Toby away from his thoughts.
"Come in," he called softly. The door creeped open and Reiko poked her head in the doorway before stepping in. Closing the door behind her she walked over to where Toby was sitting and took the chair opposite of him.
"Are you alright?" Reiko folded her hands in her lap and gave Toby a sympathizing look.
"Yeah, I'm alright," He breathed out and slouched back in his chair. "I just hate it for her."
"I do too. I couldn't imagine having to go through something like that," Reiko leaned back in her chair too.
"So she won't remember anything at all?" Toby asked.
"Well she may be foggy on a few things before coming here, but she shouldn't remember waking up at all until today. Zilo's spells aren't always precise, so it's hard to tell sometimes until they wake up. It appears to have worked though." Reiko stiffed a yawn.
"You're tired, you should go to bed. This has been hard on everyone else too," Toby stood and offered Reiko a hand up. She took it lightly and pulled herself out of the chair.
"I suppose you're right. I'll be up to check on her throughout the night, Zilo and I will take shifts."
"Why don't you wake me when it's your turn? I'll sit with you," Toby offered.
"If you insist, Goodnight Toby."
"Goodnight Reiko."
During the next few weeks, Sarah's fits had seem to lessen, but Zilo wiped them from her memory regardless. It had been several days now since she had one, and she began to act like herself again. Reiko and himself kept her company most of the time, and the Goblin King had stayed out of sight. Toby was glad though, he didn't want him around if that's how Sarah would react to his presence.
He had made quick friends with Reiko, with them spending so much time together, it was hard not to. She was sassy and frustrating at times, but it was nice to have someone close to his own age that he could be around. Sarah had taken a liking to her as well, which could only be a good thing.
Yet Toby couldn't help but think they needed to keep the Goblin King out of sight.
