Morgiana The Fanalis 2

Storm Warning

Alibaba wandered the streets, trying to push the thoughts of the pink-haired girl out of his mind. No matter what he did, though, it seemed like Morgiana fought her back to the front of his mind.

Suddenly, he stopped. Where was he? Unknowingly, he had wandered into some alley with a dead end. The brick walls surrounding him were chipped and dirty and obviously old. He was about to turn around and walk out when he saw that four tall, bulky men with two swords hung at their waist and a dagger strapped to their arm. They smiled, showing sharp, yellow teeth.

"Hey, little boy," the biggest and ugliest of them all said, stepping forward. "Those are some pretty nice clothes you're wearing. Where're you from?"

He gulped. Although he'd changed into the plainest clothes he could've found, they were, after all, still palace wear. They were cream colored, and you could tell the fabric was fine. The hems of the shirt and legs of the pants were threaded with gold, and a gold belt studded with small gems circled his waist.

Instead of answering, he backed up and then took off, trying to weave through the four men. The man of the left pulled his shirt back, and he fell to the ground with a thud, landing on his butt. He looked up, seeing the four men looming over him.

"We don't like runaways, do we, boys?" The leader asked, grinning. His groupies shook their heads and each pulled their daggers out.

Alibaba gulped and squeezed his eyes shut. So this was the end, huh? To finally run away from the comforts of life, just to be killed in a dank alley by four thugs. He swallowed the knot in his throat and wondered if the pain would last long.

Then he heard a few grunts and moans and thumps. He opened his eyes a peek and saw the four men lying on the floor, clutching their stomachs or faces. Alibaba scrambled backwards and stood up.

"Thank y – " He stopped when he saw who he was talking to and threw his arms around his savior. "Mor!"

The pink-haired Fanalis sniffed and rolled her eyes, but she was smiling.

They sat in the shade of a large, old oak tree, talking. Well, Alibaba talked, Morgiana listened.

Mor had told him that she'd wanted to give him something before he left, and that's why returned to find him. She didn't know he'd already got himself in trouble.

Morgiana turned the new dagger around in her hand, it's sharp blade cool against her palm. Alibaba had bought it for her, babbling that it was a token of his appreciation. The hilt was slim, with curves that fit her fingers nicely. It was black, with thin ribbons of pink that zig zagged. The blade was straight, unlike Alibaba's, and sharp. She couldn't deny that she liked it – and not only because it was nice to have a weapon again, but because it had been the first time in a while that someone had given her a gift.

"I think we need to train your defense skills," Morgiana said, cutting off Alibaba while he was in the middle of telling one of his stories. "If I hadn't been there, you would have been killed."

Alibaba swallowed. She was blunt and truthful and didn't sugar coat anything. And she was right.

Mor stood up and took five steps back from the tree, and then, holding her dagger in her right hand, she flicked her wrist. The dagger flew and lodged itself in the bark right above Alibaba's head.

Alibaba squeaked and scrambled away from the dagger. Morgiana leapt and pulled the dagger out of the bark and flicked a small piece of wood off of the blade. "You try." She reached down and pulled him up. "Your blade is curved, so the way you throw will be harder and the angle has to be different."

After a few failed tries, Morgiana looked thoughtful. "OK," Mor murmured. "Maybe we should focus on close combat instead?"

Both their stomachs rumbled loudly. Alibaba smiled as Morgiana blushed. "Dinner first, maybe?"

Morgiana wrinkled her nose. "All you ever think about is food," she said, slightly disdainfully, but the corner of her lips were pulling into a smile and her eyes were lit up.

After a dinner of pita bread and curry and a dessert full of sweet fruits, Morgiana and Alibaba headed back to the oak tree and lay under it, staring at the stars through the windows of the leaves.

"Hey," Alibaba said, turning to face her. "Thanks for today. Really."

"You said that already."

"I know."

And then comfortable silence settled, and they slowly drifted off to sleep.
