Sail Into My Heart

Chapter 12/13- Unbelievable

Lovingly, I nestled into Axel, but as good as it felt, there were still questions to be answered. I stood away from him, and looked him in the eye.

"Where were you Axel? I thought you were dead, and then you turn up decades later expecting me to just welcome you back into my life. Where the hell were you?" I asked, expecting an answer. Axel shut his eyes and let out a big sigh.

"I suppose I should tell you Rox, but could I please talk to him alone?" Axel said, looking at Aqua, Terra and Kairi. Aqua nodded and shooed everyone out of the room.

"Come on Kairi, let's give Grandpa some peace" Aqua said, pushing Kairi. I smiled at her, letting her know of my appreciation of how supportive she had been. Once they had walked out, Axel and I sat down, while I waited for him to tell his story of survival.

"Well, while I fell down the Ship, I bumped on a few things and broke my arm, a few ribs and fractured my ankle. I'm not going to lie, I was in agony. However, when I reached the water, I wasn't expecting to hurt as much as it did, so you were right when you said about it feeling like knives!" I smiled in my head at that, he remembered the conversation we had on the deck as well, "I tried swimming as best as I could, but it didn't last long, I would have drowned if it wasn't the lovely woman who gave me something to float on. I managed to stay afloat for a few hours, which felt like days in that deadly water, but then I was found by a lifeboat, and my mother was on it." My breathing hitched, "What did you say to her?" I asked. Axel shrugged, "can't remember. I don't want to remember her at all really. She was a nasty piece of work. I lived with her when we reached New York, and I'll tell you something for nothing, she was worse that she usually was. She would go out drinking, and come back with a different man every night, she told me that I did that to her. She wouldn't let me find you Rox, honestly, she was an old hag that I couldn't wait to get away from. I had to pay the rent for our house, but while I did that I secretly saved for a house, and as soon as I had enough I was outta there!" Axel chuckled, "but as soon as I was settled in I searched every nook and cranny Roxy, but I couldn't find you anywhere, so I thought you were dead. I'm so sorry" Axel said, resting his head in his hands as he started to cry. I shushed him, and pulled him close.

"Don't worry Axel; we're together now aren't we? Isn't that all that matters?" I asked, Axel looked up and wiped his tears away.

"Yes, my life is perfect now." Axel grinned through the tears, kissing me on the lips. "Hang on, what happened to you? After the sinking I mean, there's no need to tell me what happened before, because I know you're alive now, and that's all that matters."

I sighed; this was like a long history lesson of what happened from 1912 onwards. "Well, when I arrived in New York, the first thing I did was applied for a job, find a place to stay and see a Doctor." I explained.

"Why was your meeting with the Doctor so important? I mean, millions of people have those every day." Axel pointed out. I shut my eyes, and took a deep breath.

"Because I was ill for a long time, and I was getting worried, but it was far much more than an illness." I stopped again, and took another deep breath.

"Come on Rox, we can't always cope with cliff hangers!" Axel said, sitting on the edge of the sofa.

"I found out that I was pregnant." I revealed, Axel's eyes popped out of his skull.

"B-but, that's imp-"

"Impossible, yes I thought that too until I was told by a Doctor. All I kept thinking of was how on earth could this happen? The only person I had ever been with is you, so I knew that I was pregnant with your child. The hospitals back then weren't developed enough to find out how this happened, but I didn't care. I was having your baby, something that would be part of you and me, but how was I going to support it? It turns out its quite easy, I moved all the way to Florida with all the money I had in hope of a better life, I found a freak show, where I started working as the 'Pregnant Man'. I changed to save my family's embarrassment; I changed it to Ventus Quay (Quay is pronounced as 'key'). I was constantly asked to do interviews, which I would do for the money. I also did a weekly newspaper article for people who were pregnant with illegitimate children; I would do anything I could possibly do for money so I could give our child the best life possible." I stopped to give myself a break; I looked up to see Axel staring at me with wide eyes and an open mouth.

"When was the baby born?" Axel asked, clearly speechless.

"Well, our bouncing baby boy was born on 20th January 1913 at 2:05pm. He's called Roxel" I smiled, thinking back to the day when I held my baby boy for the first time.

"Can I see him?" Axel asked, taking my hand and looking me in the eyes.

"I don't know Axel, it's up to him, and he doesn't even know that you're here. I'll ask him what he wants. It will take a lot for him to come and see you, he's very stubborn for a 72 year old. " I explained.

Axel started smiling, "Sounds like someone I know" Axel chuckled, I playfully punched his arm and started laughing myself.

I soon stopped laughing and got serious, "Anyway, after I had Roxel, I found a job at a nearby Hotel and started working as a cook. It turned out I could make a mean meat loaf." We both chuckled at that, the last thing anyone expected me to be was a good cook. "I changed my name back to Roxas Strife, looked after Roxel, and have lived in Florida all my life."

Axel looked up at me again with his gorgeous eyes, "I wish I was there for you and Roxel, but I'm here now and not going anywhere". I smiled and got up, getting weird looks from Axel.

"Come on Axel" I said, holding out my hand ready for him to take it, "we've got some catching up to do." Axel takes my hand and follows me into my room.
