I was walking around the tribe helping Frostbite manage some stuff. I was currently helping out some of the farmers with the plants (which I was amazed that could grow here) when I felt an arm around my shoulder.
"Phoenix, what are you doing here?" said person held me closer and laughed.
"What I can't see my girl?" I rolled my eyes at him. We had been dating since the whole Aphrodite incident a year and a half ago. I can't say I got used to it. It was strange, dating someone but worth it so far. We haven't kissed yet because I wasn't ready for my first kiss and Phoenix was okay with waiting, but it didn't mean he would stop playfully hinting that he wanted one. Danielle had also gone with Danny to the human realm. I have no idea what they're doing but I was at least glad enough they had forgiven Vlad and given him another chance.
"Well I'm busy, so either help out or do something else" I playfully knocked his head a little and continued onto the next part of the tribe, waving goodbye to the farmers. We walked together to the school and about half way there I broke off into a run.
"Can't catch me!" I shouted back at him, laughing. He laughed and ran as well managing to catch up with me easily. He tackled me at the last minute and we rolled around in the snow laughing as we finally stopped, laying on our backs. I was still laughing a little as I slowly sat up but stopped when I saw something flying straight for the tribe at an incredible speed.
"What is that?" I thought out loud and Phoenix sat up quickly and saw what I had spotted. Whatever it was landed at the edge of the tribe and a loud explosion was heard followed by a light wave of snow. Then there was silence, nobody moved, nobody even blinked. Some of the children from the school had come out to see what had happened but no one made a sound. The silence was interrupted by another explosion, a burst of green and light blue flames and screams, many several screams.
"Gather the teachers and get the kids out of here. There's a cave shelter at the mountain near the farms," I pointed to the respective mountain, "bring anyone you find along the way. I'm going to find my god-father." He nodded and began doing as I said. I ran towards the point of explosion, knowing my god father, he would be there helping the people.
Along the way I helped the injured ones by making a stretcher out of the shadows and used it to bring any other injured ones to safety. It was that new power I had discovered. The shadow stretcher will be able to adapt to the circumstances when needed and I would not have to focus a lot of energy on it.
"Dad!" I shouted spotting him helping a couple out of a burning hut. One of them had a broken leg judging from the way he was walking and needed support from Frostbite. I ran to him and made another stretcher from the shadows and sent the couple off to the safe zone.
"What's happening?" I shouted over the sounds of more explosions. I tried to see further into the chaos but the sound of cracking alerted me to something. Frostbite pulled me away as a large portion of the burning hut fell at the spot that I was at.
"No time Spirit, I sent Plamius to help some of the families and bring them to the safe shelter but there is one left in there" I nodded and we both ran off into the house. I stared at the wreckage left from the attack on the way there, it would take a long while to rebuild, and I could only hope that there were no extremely fatal injuries. I've never been so glad that we were ghosts. Frostbite shouted instructions at Avalanche and Blizzard who were trying to maintain the stability of the quickly deteriorating building.
I ran in first followed quickly by Frostbite. We split up and searched the rooms fast. The roof of the hut was collapsing quickly and if we could not find the family then our effort would have been wasted. The family was a loving couple with two kids, a little girl and a newborn son. My god father was going to search for the adults while I searched for the children.
"Help please! My brother's trapped! Someone!" the weak voice of the little girl cried out. I hurried faster towards the source of the voice and found the girl crying outside a room. The room's entrance was blocked by a large piece of the roof that had collapsed. The girl was paying little to no attention to the fire that was closing in on her and was more concerned about her brother.
"Shh, calm down, I'm here. Where's your brother?" I picked up the little girl and she pointed into the rooms shouting panicked words in between sobs.
"What's your name sweetie?" I asked trying to distract her for a while, while looking for any possible way into the room. The only way in was to destroy the wood that blocked the entrance.
"Lily" I smiled at her and used me cloak to protect her from the flames. Thank you fireproof fabric!
"Lily, I need you to keep your head down and hold onto me. No matter what, do not let go okay?" she nodded and wrapped her arms around my neck sideways and buried her head into my shoulder. I made a small light beam and used it to blast the wood. The wood broke apart sending splinters and small pieces flying around everywhere.
Not wasting any more time, I ran into the room and looked for the newborn. I was getting scared that I may be too late and that I might cost Lily her afterlife as well. A small whimper sounded from Lily and I hugged her tighter. I tried not to let my fear show while looking through the flames.
"I'm sorry Lily" the little girl cried as I ran out of the room and out of the house. Somehow I managed to escape out of the house just in time. Avalanche and Blizzard jumped back as the house finally collapsed. I spotted my god father shouting for all of us that were helping out to escape to the cave shelter. Everyone started running as more explosions sounded throughout the tribe.
I took off flying slightly above the ground, slightly slower than usual so that Lily wouldn't be too uncomfortable. Once we were out of the tribe I dropped onto the snowy ground and started walking slowly. Lily hadn't stopped crying throughout the whole thing. I felt tears start to form as well but I refused to let them fall. Not yet. Not until she was safe and with her parents.
I cast one last glance at the destroyed tribe I saw as my home. The explosions had finally stopped but the whole place was completely destroyed and too dangerous to return to now. I gently wiped Lily's tears away as I entered the shelter and let her down on the ground. She ran straight to her parents and continued crying.
"I'm sorry about your son" I told them softly while looking down. Her parents hugged their daughter and her father put a hand on my shoulder trying to comfort me slightly while they coped as well. They were somewhat glad at least their daughter was okay. I tried to smile at them but it came out more like a grimace. I left them afterwards to be able to grieve their son.
My own tears started escaping my eyes afterwards. I felt terrible. I could have saved their son. I could have done something more. I could have focused more on finding him instead of panicking about not finding him.
I could have done so much more…
But I didn't…
