Disclaimer: What? Pokemon belongs to Nintendo? Oh darn.
A/N: Changed back to its original version.
Common Name: Wynaut, Sohnano (juvenile), Wobbuffet, Sonans (adult)
Scientific Name: Longaminus clarus
Description: Wobbuffet are unusual, hexaped amphibians. They hold their bodies upright, propped in place by their four rear legs, none of which have toes. In this position, they are 51 inches tall. Their bodies are smooth, light blue, and sausage-like, with two digitless, finlike forearms hanging from their shoulders. They have no visible neck. Wobbuffet have a wide mouth, with unusual, scalloped lips. A fatty hump hangs down from the back of their heads. They have a short, broad tail, which is black with two prominent eyespots on its dorsal surface. Wobbuffet's eyes are permanently closed, and they are blind.
Wobbuffet young, or Wynaut, are similar to adults, but differ in several ways. Their hind limbs are underdeveloped, and their forelimbs project from directly behind their heads, which have so little neck that the arms often look as though they are projecting directly from out of the head. Wynaut have a fatty hump on their heads as their adult stage does, but instead of being on the back of the head, Wynaut's humps are on the tops of their heads. They have black tails as Wobbuffet do, but with only one eyespot. Wynaut's skin is loose, and often collects in folds at the bottom of its torso.
Range: Wobbuffet are native to a few cave systems in Johto, Fortune Island, and Hoenn. They have recently become established in Cerulean Cave in Kanto, where it is believed that they are captive escapes.
Habitat: Wobbuffet are obligate cave dwellers, that is, they can only survive in caves. On Mirage Island in Hoenn, Wynaut occasionally come to the surface during floods, but they rarely survive long when they are isolated from their habitat.
Call: Wobbuffet males will 'tink' and grunt during the mating season. Wynaut make a soft croak to keep in contact with their crèche.
Diet: Wobbuffet are primarily scavengers. They usually feed off of Zubat and Golbat guano, but will also eat carrion, human garbage, and pokemon eggs. They have an extremely efficient digestive system, which prevents them from becoming ill from their diets.
Life Cycle: Since these pokemon are blind, mating displays consist mostly of 'tink'-ing. Wobbuffet males will display to females year-round, though the females are not always receptive. To show they are receptive, females turn out their lips and 'pucker,' exposing scent glands engorged and red with blood. These females are quite distinctive-looking.
Females lay clutches of several dozen of their jellylike eggs in shallow pools, where they slowly develop. Eventually, tiny Wynaut hatch, staying submerged for several weeks until their lungs develop. After transitioning to air breathing, the Wynaut stay in 'crèches,' groups of juveniles that crowd together for safety from predators. The crèche breaks up when the Wynaut reach adulthood
Wobbuffet often live to the ripe old age of 50.
Relationship with Humans: Wobbuffet may not be particularly large, graceful, cute, or beautiful, but they have long captured the human imagination for their comical appearance. They often star in television shows for children.
Apart from this, Wobbuffet are highly desired for the arena, for their psychic abilities and their capacity to take incredible amounts of damage and survive. Their populations are low, but are still very populous on Mirage Island, which has very limited public access.
For a long time, Wobbuffet would not breed in captivity, and battle demand reduced their numbers to perhaps as low as a few thousand, mostly on Mirage Island. But in recent years, a hormone was isolated that induces female Wobbuffet to become receptive. Known by the market name of 'Lax Incense,' this compound has allowed for extensive captive breeding of this species.
Naturalist's Notes: Wobbuffet are well known for their psychic abilities, which mostly revolve around causing pain to any creature that so much as touches them. The psychic damage Wobbuffet cause is usually directly proportional to how much pain they themselves are in. If particularly angered, they can even prevent a predator from thinking of leaving, locking them into a war of attrition. Wobbuffet have a thick layer of skin and fat over their bodies, and can take a lot of punishment before losing consciousness. As a result, they almost always come out on top during these conflicts.
Wobbuffet's tails were long believed to be a decoy, drawing attack away from their vitals. However, these pokemon react very badly to anyone touching or damaging their tails, so the current line of thinking is that the tails are in fact meant to make predators think that they are being watched, even if they approach the Wobbuffet from behind.
Wobbuffet are often seen standing upright, and walk very slowly on their rear legs. They also can move by sliding on their bellies like a sled, pushing with their hind legs and leaving distinctive skid marks.
Wobbuffet can survive extremely long periods without food, living off of the fat stored in their head humps.
