Fighting Back
(Edward's POV)
I sighed while I looked at my daughters. Both are so innocent, yet at such very young ages they have both had to experience evil in this world. Christmas is coming up and now they would be spending their Christmas worrying. Renesmee spent her first Christmas worrying about the Volturi, and now we would have to worry about this insane man wanting to kill my family.
Last night both girls kept waking up from nightmares. I also heard Lily and Aidan crying and waking up in the other rooms while Rose and Emmett tried to calm down their children. It took a bit, but it's been a few consecutive hours that the girls have been asleep, so that was a good sign.
"I just want the nightmare to end," Bella whispered to me as she looked down at our children. Lizzy was curled up close to Nessie. Lizzy was only a baby still and she was exposed to the evilness we had failed to protect Renesmee from. I felt somehow that I just let both of them down.
"I know. I do too," I replied softly as I go to give Bella a kiss on the top of her head. She then slowly gets out of the bed, kissing each of our daughter's foreheads before heading over to the window. I watched my wife stand before the window. Her entire frame was still and her expression blank. Gently, I maneuver my way past the girls, making sure not to wake them. From there I stand by my wife's side, placing a hand on her arm.
"I just want them to have a normal childhood that's all I want," Bella confessed to me in before dry sobbing. My heart began to break seeing her like this. Bella was so strong. Stronger than me, that's for sure, so to see my wife break like this...It hurt me. I never want my beautiful angel to feel any sort of pain.
"I know Bella," I whispered. Bella then turns around to look at me. Her topaz eyes showed fear and sadness in them. I opened my arms out to her where she proceeds to fall into them. Her face buried in my chest while I hold her tight, trying to soothe her by humming her lullaby.
We stayed like that for what felt like forever. That was until we heard a stir and looked over to see our daughters were slowly getting up.
Lizzy was cuddled in the sheets of her makeshift crib while Renesmee had an arm around her little sister. All of a sudden Renesmee started to twitch and shot up crying. Bella and I didn't waste any time as we rush to her side.
"Momma! Daddy! Bad man!" she sobbed trying to catch her breath.
"Shhh baby you're safe," I told her, scooping her up in my arms. She gripped tightly to me while Lizzy began to cry.
"Bad man is trying to kill me!"
Bella proceeds to pick up the youngest of our children while I still hold Renesmee, trying to soothe her from all danger lurking in her mind. Her face is buried in my chest and I could feel her tears seep through my shirt. Bella came over so we had both of our daughters in between us now.
"Shhh Angels, he isn't going to hurt you. Don't worry. We'll catch him and everything will be fine," I said, trying to reassure them in any way i could. I didn't want to make promises, but I was determined. We will capture Lorenzo and he will suffer like he made my family suffer.
"Think happy thoughts," Bella told them, her voice soothing. She the began to brush the tops of their heads. "Think about Christmas. Renesmee you should write your letter to Santa and help Lizzy, Aidan, and Lily write theirs. How fun will that be! Then we'll bake some cookies later and decorate. How does that sound my sweet angels?"
"I like that," Renesmee mumbled through her tears. "Can we do that today?"
"Of course," Bella said, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "We'll have some fun."
Bella then looked towards me so we're making eye contact. She uses her shield to prevent Lizzy from being able to read my mind. Bella then lets her shield up so only I could hear her thoughts.
"It's to keep them distracted so we can talk without worrying them," Bella told me before pulling her shield back up. I nod confirming what I just heard.
"I'll have Jacob and Seth help you guys as well, with Grandma Esme," Bella exclaimed, trying to cheer them up.
"Okay, Momma." Renesmee sniffled, wipping her eyes.
"Alright now come on babies, let's go downstairs. I'm sure there's some nice breakfast waiting for you and then you can start your letters," Bella said with a smile on her face. She was trying really hard to show the girls everything is alright.
"Momma, can you bring me downstairs?" Renesmee asked, shyly.
"Sure, my little nudger," Bella replied, sweeping our oldest into her arms. My wife rested Renesmee on her hip, her legs dangling as Bella made her way downstairs.
I could see Renesmee was getting too big to be getting picked up by Bella. She's growing up- don't go there Edward.
"You forgot Daddy, I'm a baby still." I looked down at my youngest. Lizzy smirked at me while clapping her hands. I chuckled as I swing her up in my arms, making her giggle.
"That's right. When your sister becomes a teenager and into boys, please help keep me sane." I teased with her, causing her to giggle even more.
When we reach the bottom of the stairs the first thing I noticed is Emmett with Aidan on his lap and Rosalie is next to them with Lily on hers. Both of the twins are munching on pancakes at the kitchen table.
"Good morning, my sweet darlings," Esme greeted Renesmee and Lizzy. "How are you two doing?"
"Better," Bella answered for the girls. Renesmee nodded in agreement, resting her head against Bella's shoulder.
"Well that's good. Is there any breakfast you girls might want?" Esme asked them, a gentle smile on her face.
"Eggs please!" Renesmee exclaimed with a smile. Glad to see she was starting to get back to the normal hang of things.
"Can I please have blood, Grandma?" Lizzy asked Esme using her power. Since Lizzy is not old enough to hunt yet we give her bottles of animal blood. She has taken quite a liking to it.
"Of course, my darlings," Esme told them as she went to go make eggs for Renesmee and get a bottle for Lizzy.
I went to go sit Lizzy in her high chair, bringing it close to Renesmee so they could stay close to one another. Bella and I go to sit right next to them. Bella sits by Lizzy to help her with her bottle while I sit by Renesmee. My little girl decides to go and crawl up on my lap. I couldn't help but chuckle in the moment as I go to brush her curls gently.
"Here we are, one bottle for little Miss Lizzy," Esme announced, placing the bottle of blood in front of her youngest grandchild. "And a nice plate of eggs for Miss Renesmee." My mother then placed a plate of eggs in front of Renesmee.
"Thank you, Grandma," Renesmee told her softly.
"No problem, sweetie," Esme answered. From there, both Renesmee and Lizzy began to have their breakfast.
"Hey kids!" Seth exclaimed in a cheery mood as he came into the room. I could tell he was trying to brighten up everything. He was even in a Christmas hat dragging Jacob along with him in a matching one. I could tell Jake wasn't too keen about the hats by the look on his face. At least he'd keep the kids laughing, and Jacob would keep Renesmee calm.
"Seth and the mu- I mean Jacob, are going to help write your letters for Santa," Rosalie explained to all the kids. Jacob frowned at Rosalie, but shrugged it off eventually.
Seth and Jake would be keeping the kids occupied today we can have a family meeting to discus Lorenzo. They didn't need to hear any of us discussing things over.
"Really?" Aidan asked happily.
"That's right!" Emmett boomed. "Seth and Jacob will help you guys. It'll be fun! Writing to the big jolly man up North!"
"Yay! I can't wait!" Lily exclaimed, jumping up and down.
Once the kids were done with breakfast, Seth and Jacob took them with Esme to the other room while the rest of us met in the living room. Carlisle would fill her in later, I think the kids need a warm person with them like Esme. She'll probably keep them calm and occupied.
"Okay so what do we do now? This guy isn't going to rest until the kids are dead!" Rosalie cried out.
Jasper sighed, "Rose, it's one against-"
"Jazz, I know that! But this Lorenzo thing almost killed Lizzy yesterday and tried to kill Renesmee a month ago! What if it's Lily or Aidan next? Or what if it's one of the girls again? He now might be fixated on Lizzy more so than the others!" Rosalie pointed out.
"Babe calm down, we don't need the kids to hear," Emmett soothed his wife, bringing her next to him on the couch. Rosalie obliged as she quietly took a seat, not wanting to scare the kids.
I sighed, she did have a point. It wouldn't be a matter of time until he tries to attack again unexpectedly. We need to be on our guard and ready to fight.
"We need help," I spoke up. "Rose is right. It may be one against us five, but we're going to need more. He's very powerful and intelligent."
"Maybe we can see if Jake and the other wolves could help out," Bella suggested. "I'm sure they would."
"I already talked to Sam and Jacob. They both seem on board with helping us," Carlisle spoke up. "What we need is more help though. Someone who knows how to fight this kind of creature."
"What about Ethan?" Alice suggested. "He knows who he is."
"True. We could try, but I don't want to pester him too much," Carlisle mentioned. "Anyway, I'm not even sure if he knows how to fight against Lorenzo."
"We could ask the Denali's?" Emmett mentioned. "They could help us!"
"I'll have to double check with Tanya. I'm sure her coven will help us," Carlisle muttered, scratching the back of his neck.
"Wouldn't that be pushing it though? We already owe them big time for the last time we asked them to fight with us," Rosalie pointed out.
"The Denali's are family...I think they'll help us if we're in dyer need of it," Carlisle replied.
"What if we get a witch to help us? Or a warlock?" Alice asked curiously.
"A witch? Alice, they'd never help us," I pointed out. "It's rare to come across one. They hate vampires."
"You never know! Never say never," Alice told me.
"We could," Carlisle said. "But Edward's right. A good idea Alice, but they aren't too fond of our kind."
"Wait so they're really witches?" Bella asked curiously, wide eyed. "Not to derail the conversation."
"It's okay. There are. They're very powerful and beautiful creatures. Just like shape shifting, if they practice magic that's how they stay immortal. Not all of them choose that path though. Many tend to marry humans and live out mundane lives. They aren't the biggest fans of our kind. Mostly because of the Volturi. The Volturi have clashed with many witch clans over the past thousand years. Many just want to be left alone. Live in peace."
"What about the Volturi?" I heard Emmett ask. "As much as those guys are assholes, they might not like this jerk going around acting all macho? They might actually be on our side for once."
"No! And risk Lizzy? We don't know how they'll react someone of her kind. Plus, knowing the Volturi it'll come at a price," I pointed out to my brother. "They'll try and make Bella, Alice, or I join them. Even worse they could kill Lizzy thinking that she is a threat. It's more dangerous than just the five of us attacking Lorenzo."
"We'll just wait and prepare. I'm going to call Tanya and see if they can come down here. We owe them a great amount if they do this for us," Carlisle said as he got up from the couch.
"Could this mean that Lorenzo is unstoppable?" Bella whispered to me. I cupped her face and gently placed a kiss on her lips.
"Love, he won't get to us or the kids. He'll have to go through me and you to get to the kids. We won't let him win. I promise," I said, hugging her tight to my chest.
"Edward...I'm so worried, I just wish all this drama was over," She whispered.
"Come on, let's go see the kids," I told her.
"Alright," She agreed, giving me a small smile.
We then go to enter the other room. A smile spread on my face seeing Renesmee writing a letter to Santa for Lizzy. I couldn't help but be filled with happiness watching my two daughters interact with one another.
"Momma! Daddy!" Renesmee exclaimed. "I'm writing Lizzy's letter to Santa!"
"That's great, Angel." Bella smiled going over to kneel down by the kids. I smiled watching as my wife listened to Renesmee tell her about her Christmas list.
I go and kneel down right by Bella and listen with her to Renesmee's talk. I pull Bella close to my side and she leans her head on my shoulder.
This was going to be difficult, but something tells me we are going to make through this. Even if the future looks bleak for us right now, I for one, am not going to let this man take my children away. I'm going to fight no matter what.
