"I...got...you!" Makoto pounced onto the grass, trying to catch a butterfly that had flew away in the knick of time, and before the small half demon clasped his hands on where it had stood.
The young half demon groaned, dog ears drooping in discontent. With closed eyes and in a upright position, Makoto's ears twitched at the light sounds of his surroundings to listen at any approaching figures.
There were only the rustling of the trees and the feeling of the grass tickling his hand as the wind blew around him. He had gone with his mother to pick out some herbs for Kaede-obaa-chan, and all he did know was that he had gone too far from where his mother had told him to go.
He was going to get an ear-full when he would find his way back to his mother, that was if he found his way back. Currently, he was in a part of his father's forest and with that being said, his father never had taught him how to track or hunt. Now he found himself stuck in a very dangerous situation. He knew it was risky to be in the demon infested forest by himself.
"M-Mama," he stuttered in fear. Eyelids blinking rapidly, the one year old had looked around to see if he could find the Goshinboku, the god tree. "There are trees everywhere! I can't find it!" he shouted in anger. Makoto was told he was just as stubborn like his father and hated when he couldn't figure things out on his own.
Kagome sat down in a comfortable position, she hummed to herself as the smell of the forest and flowers surrounded her creating a peaceful heaven. If Inuyasha wasn't out on a errand with Miroku exorcising demons again for the second time in that month.
"Kagome-sama!" the young miko looked up from her basket filled with herbs for Kaede, to see Rin running in a flower patterned kimono that Sesshoumaru had given her for her thirteenth birthday a while ago.
"Rin-chan," Kagome retorted, once the young teenaged girl let out a small breath when reaching her. "Kagome-sama, is it okay for you to be sitting down?" Rin asked, she was worried for the baby and its health, and she definitely didn't want Inuyasha to be angry with Kagome.
Kagome smiled reassuringly to her,"Yes it is, I'm fine and the baby is only two weeks old so far," she stared down at her slightly bulging. It still amazed her that demon pregnancies were shorter than human pregnancies. Kagome rubbed her stomach and sighed, closing her eyes to relax.
It wasn't a long time to relax when she was asked a questioned that made her feel as if she fell off of a cliff.
"Mm….Where is Makoto-kun?" Rin asked, not seeing the carefree and wild hanyou running around by them.
"Mako-..Makoto!" Kagome shouted out for her son, cupping her hands around her mouth. Her eyes darted all around, in search for her son. How could she have been so careless?!
Tears clouded her vision, Kagome wiped her unshed tears and slowly, and steadily got up from the ground. "Makoto!"
"Mama!" Makoto shouted, he walked around the forest ever since he realized he had wondered off too far. He clutched the long end of his robe of the fire rat that his father had given him on his birthday. It still held the scent of his parents, the comforting smell of his mother and the slight forest scent of his father who would protect him from harm.
Makoto kept on walking when he stopped promptly and sat down on the floor,"I have been going in circles…" he whined, his head lowered along with his ears.
"Mama…" he clenched his tiny hands tight, placing a fierce expression on his face, eyes narrowed and looking straight ahead. "I'm getting out of here. I want my mama and papa."
Nodding in assent, the young half demon got right back up and began on walking once more.
"Runt…" Inuyasha growled as the kitsune started to nag him that he had just heard someone scream Makoto's name.
"Inuyasha I am not playing games this time!" Shippo countered, he had been staying with his adopted parents and brother for some time. Although, when Inuyasha and Miroku were exorcising the demon in the next village, he had been impressing some of the village children of his fox magic tricks.
There were times when Shippo would state, playfully to Inuyasha, that someone would shout for Makoto. It seemed that Inuyasha wasn't fazed by it this time. Shippo was warned by Kagome to not play such a thing on Inuyasha, the kit was told of a story 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf,' but he was busy playing with his little brother.
Miroku chuckled and looked up at the clear afternoon sky,"I wonder what my dear Sango and children are doing."
"Ah.." Inuyasha agreed, thinking of his wife and son, and his second child that was on the way. It would be some time before their child would arrive and Inuyasha was frantic that he had another person to take care of, but he didn't mind at all, he was overjoyed of the news of having another child.
Inuyasha grinned at the thought of his second child, when he heard the name of his son being shouted out, ringing from the meadow where- "Kagome," he whispered. Shippo had a deadpan expression and raised his arms shrugging that his adopted father didn't listen.
"Mah, I tried to tell him," Shippo said, it wasn't until a second later when Inuyasha took off to the direction where Kagome had shouted. Shippo's eyes widened,"E-Eh?! Wait for me!" he scampered off as well.
Miroku stared at the barrels of rice,"Now how am I suppose to take this home," he rubbed his chin, deep in thought.
It felt as if it were hours of walking barefooted in the forest, Makoto rubbed his eyes and he was getting tired every passing minute. He let out a long exhausted yawn, his ears pinning back as he did so.
"Mama.." he said drowsily, Makoto rested alongside of a tree trunk and closed his eyes, he was at least warm with his clothing and fixed himself in a fetal position.
"Little one," a voice made his left ear flick and peak a little from his right eye.
A ghostly figure stood, her long straight black hair flowing around her, warm brown eyes staring at him and a soothing smile made him smile back only a little.
Makoto got up and gazed at her, she was pretty and her face reminded him of his mother. "Follow me," she said, turning around and floating off. Makoto hesitated, maybe this is what his mother meant of a guardian who watched over them in their time in need. He wrinkled his nose and disagreed, it could have been a ghost. He had over heard his mother and Kaede-baba speaking of the powers he possessed.
"What do you mean he is gone," Inuyasha said, in the calmest voice he could say, knowing Kagome's condition. He didn't want her to be stressed, but their son was messing and her hormones were going haywire.
Kagome cried into her hands and shook her head, not knowing what to say to him,"If I had only watched him-"
Inuyasha pulled her into an embrace, he tried to console her, placing his chin on her head,"Kagome it wasn't your fault. Makoto be alright." Kagome clenched her fists on his haori and nodded.
Makoto was falling asleep while he walked, trailing behind the woman who was helping him find his way back home. "Papa…mama," he muttered absentmindedly.
"Little one," the woman said, she turned her head over her shoulder and noticed the young half demon walking hazily, and blinking several times before meeting her eyes.
"You're home," she said with a smile before disappearing into thin air.
Makoto sniffed the air, she was right and there were his parents by the forests edge shouting his name. "Mama! Papa!" he shouted, getting their attention as he scurried over to them.
Inuyasha snapped his head towards his son's shouts. "Makoto," he whispered, watching his son run to him and Kagome, throwing himself into his arms.
"I was scared," Makoto cried out, he hated feeling unsafe when his parents weren't around. Kagome teared up as she ran her fingers through her son's hair, watching him cry.
"Just don't wander off too far from you mother," Inuyasha said to him, his eyes narrowing down at his son.
Makoto's ears drooped back and he nodded. "Keh, I need someone to watch over her when I'm not here. And your future brother or sister," Inuyasha continued.
Makoto smiled,"Okay papa." Inuyasha carried him as he and Kagome walked to their hut. Kagome tweaked her son's ear as he fell asleep in his fathers arms, happy to be with them again. Mentally thanking the lady who had helped him out of the forest.
