"Inuyasha-sama, is she alright?"
Inuyasha growled at the flea that had been silent the whole way to looking for his children, at least half of the time, and now he chose to speak.
"She's fine Myoga-ji-chan," Makoto chose to answer and he felt the flea jump onto his shoulder. Myoga sighed,"If only you children didn't go in the forest before the sun was setting."
Makoto's ears lowered and so did his eyes,"Chichi-ue. I'm sorry."
Inuyasha stopped and he looked down at his son. "It wasn't your fault. Let's get going, we can't stay out here in the dark, it's dangerous."
"But-"
"Let's go Makoto," his father's firm voice made him flinch and the boy followed right behind him. "Don't worry young master. Your Otou-san just wants you children to be safe," Myoga said.
"I know," Makoto retorted, downcast eyes stared at the ground, his father never snapped at him like he did just now. The boy didn't notice his footing and tripped on a root, he yelped and fell face flat on the ground.
"Makoto," Inuyasha said, turning around to help his son up with his loose arm. "I'm okay," Makoto told his father, rubbing his aching nose, sniffing only a bit. Inuyasha looked at his son and a memory flashed in his eyes, the time when he had fell when he ran from demons that chased him.
Inuyasha turned his head to the side, his eyes shut closed, remembering. Makoto stared up at his father and noticed the wistful expression, even in the dark he could see it, it made him feel even more bitter than before.
"Chichi-ue," Inuyasha heard his daughter mutter in her sleep, snuggling closer for warmth, with a smile spread along her face. His eyes opened from her voice and he slowly picked up his son, to hold him close.
"Makoto, are you alright?"
Makoto nodded and stared at his father's violet eyes,"I'm fine chichi-ue. Can we go home now? We aren't lost are we?"
"Keh, 'course we ain't lost, what made ya think that?" Inuyasha questioned his son, now fear stared to settle in when all he saw was darkness among the trees.
"Because we are going in circles," Makoto told him, squirming to be put down on the ground. Inuyasha obliged and placed his son on the ground, arching a brow when the boy twirled around slowly.
"Over there," Makoto said, sensing a small amount of spiritual power, and if his gut was correct, it was his mother. On his human night, he could sense auras, but not so great when he is far from one. Luckily, he managed to find the aura of his mother, or else they wouldn't know what to do next.
Inuyasha let out a sigh of relief, thankful that his son had spiritual powers, let him lead the way. It wouldn't be long before they reach the clearing, but Makoto stopped abruptly, causing his father to get rather irritated about being outside for so long.
"What is it?" Inuyasha said, his eyes scanning the area. Makoto shivered when a gust of wind blew around them, he tried to hold in his sneeze, but it came out any way.
There was a low growl, that caused Myoga to dive to clutch the boy's hair, fearing for his life. The flea gulped when a tree had fallen and out came an oni with horns that was three feet long.
Makoto shook in fear and was placed behind his father. Inuyasha growled, or at least tried, he looked down to stare at his clawless fingers. "Damn it," he said in a hushed whisper.
"Ah, so this is what you half breeds look like, I've heard of some hanyō protecting this forest and you must be 'em," the oni had said in a grim voice. Its blood shot eyes glared down at the children.
"And you've got some little vermin's as well," the oni continued, taking a step to them. Makoto gripped on his father's hakama, frightened at the giant demon that wanted to- he gulped at what troubles would follow.
Inuyasha quickly, yet softly, pushed Makoto further back. No harm would come to his children, as long as he was alive, he'd protect them. "Makoto, take Kisara, now."
Makoto looked at his father, before he can register that his sister was being passed to him, and to make matters worse, they were human. Myoga gasped and jumped over to his master. "Inuyasha-sama, you mustn't fight, you are only-"
"Shut up," Inuyasha squashed the flea and flicked him to the side. His hand moved to tetsusaiga's hilt and he unsheathed his sword.
"Ha! What are you going to do with that rusty sword, eh? Are you going to try and hit me with it? I bet that it'll break before you can even land a hit," the oni said, smirking in their direction.
Makoto struggled in holding his sister, he was only two, and not as strong as his hanyō form. Chichi-ue, Makoto thought, worried about his father.
"What's takin' so long you half breed, do you think I won't kill you? I might as well kill your children, they would die anyway without you. Where is their mother? Might as well kill 'er too. I was lookin' for something to occupy my time," the oni had said.
Makoto's brows furrowed and his hands clenched into fists, No you won't. His anger had triggered his spiritual powers to create a barrier, a transparent one, like the one he had used when he was just a mere infant.
The oni took one step closer and felt a powerful electric shock run through his body, its red eyes widened and roared at the three figures. "You cursed half breed! What are y-you doing to me!"
Inuyasha lowered his sword, no point in using it when it didn't transform, he looked back to see his son concentrating. Makoto's brows furrowed even more.
"Careful when you are around your father or sister, you might accidentally purify them, okay? Just breathe in slowly, focus on your enemy that will be facing you. When using a barrier, you have to clear your mind from any thoughts, emotions, and fears. Can you do that?"
Makoto looked up at the demon that was starting to turn into ash, the oni took one look at him, and Makoto smirked.
That was the last of the him and the demon was gone. Inuyasha didn't know that his child could use his spiritual powers on moonless nights, at least it made things easier. "Makoto," Inuyasha smiled at his son.
Makoto smiled back and fell backwards, his father quickly catching him before his head met the ground. "Makoto," Inuyasha said, holding his son.
Kisara's eyelids peeked open,"I missed something, right?" she asked cutely and yawning at seeing her father.
"Everything is alright now," Inuyasha said, picking up his daughter who reached up to him, and then fell asleep once more.
"Inuyasha!" Kagome shouted, running and noticed her family on the ground, Inuyasha used the bole of the tree to sit up. His son's head was on his lap and Kisara was in his arms.
"Kagome," Inuyasha said, seeing his wife running to him.
"Inuyasha-sama," Myoga jumped from the miko's shoulder to his master. "I've managed to get Kagome-sama when the oni demon appeared."
"Like always you run from trouble, shouldn't known you wouldn't be here, but thank you," Inuyasha said, surprising the old flea. Myoga stuttered a 'what'.
Inuyasha stayed silent and watched his wife go on her knees. "Are they alright?" Kagome asked, gasping at the black haired Kisara in her husband's arms.
"The pups are good, Makoto killed the demon with his barrier, the pup did good," Inuyasha retorted handing Kisara over his wife, then picking up his exhausted son. "They'll be just fine. I should have not let them go out into the forest. I should've done something," Kagome told him.
"Keh, they would've gone anyway, they should start listening better," Inuyasha told her, getting up and standing next to her.
"They are just as stubborn as the both of us," Kagome muttered, pulling her daughter closer. Kisara held on to her kosode, smiling at the familiar clothing, muttering 'haha-ue' in her sleep.
"Yeah they are," Inuyasha said, as they headed their way home.
Myoga smiled and watched their figures leave, he then heard growling and his eyes dilated,"Wait for me, Inuyasha-sama!"
Author's Note
I've started another story, The Face of the One You Love, Inu/Kag, but it may not seem like it at first. I am overjoyed that I drew the cover, I usually do my story covers, but this one took me at least four hours to draw and color. Whew, I'm glad that's over.
