"Are you okay Akihiko?"
Worried amber eyes lifted to look up at the demon that had pulled the car into park, the elder turning to look at his child, the demon slipping from his car to approach the boy's door, the child weakly slipping from his car seat to the ground, his father's hand behind his head as the two approached the door.
"I'm scared," the boy whispered, his amber eyes meeting his father's, "daddy, I'm scared…"
"Okay," Sesshomaru murmured, his lips pulling into a reassuring smile for his son, "it's okay Akihiko, I am too."
Rolling clouds threated their sky and made the day appear almost night, the atmosphere not helping his frightened son for a moment. Sesshomaru felt nervousness enter him as he stepped into the cozy house behind his son, Rin having evidently left the door unlocked for her son.
"M-Mommy," the boy called, his hand holding the other as they shook lightly, "M-Mommy I'm home…"
"Akihiko?" Rin called as she moved from around the kitchen, "are you alright sweetie? You sound-"
The smiling lips on her face fell at the sight of her son standing by the tall demon, her eyes widening in shock and surprise etched on her face while Sesshomaru swallowed thickly as he lay eyes on Rin for the first time in five years. She seemed immune to aging, her skin just as flawless and her hair still just as long as black as midnight. Any weight she had gained from carrying his child had since let her body, her stomach flat while her curves had grown slightly, her hips and bust grown with the addition of the baby.
"M-Mommy…"
Both heads turned to look at the small boy now clinging to his father's pant leg, his amber eyes looking on the verge of tears while he ducked behind the demon.
"Sw-Sweetheart?" Rin asked softly, her eyes looking slightly pained as the child she unconditionally loved and cherished hiding from her, "wh-what's wrong?"
"I don't want you to yell at me," the boy started to sob, his eyes wiped on the black pants, "I-I don't want you to-to get angry a-at daddy 'n me…"
"D-Daddy…" chocolate eyes turned from her son to the demon, Sesshomaru looking from the boy to the mother of his child. "Akihiko," the young woman started, "I-I'm not gonna yell at you-"
"But-But you you're-you-re m-mad," Akihiko sniffed, "an-an I-I don't-I don't-"
"Akihiko," Rin started, her voice soft as she lowered her body to the floor, her knees on the wood as she looked at her child, "come here honey."
The child hesitated for a moment before he ran to his mother, his face sobbing into her shoulder.
"Shh," Rin hushed, her hand rubbing his back, "can you tell me what's made you so sad?"
"Rin," the demon started, the young woman focusing her attention on him, Sesshomaru recoiling at the glare she shot him.
"Mommy," the boy gulped, "uh-um… wh-when Ms. Kagome c-came over I-I-she-I," the child swallowed, "I-I asked her t-to t-take m-me to m-my dad a-a-an-"
"You… what?" the young woman stammered, her eyes looking at the boy with shock at is tearful confession, the boy gulping down large quantities to calm himself.
"I-I'm sorry," Akihiko whispered, his body quivering from freight, "I-I'm sorry mommy…"
"Don't be," Rin told him softly as she found her composure, "Akihiko-"
"B-But-"
"Why don't you go to your room to calm down for a bit," the dark chocolate orbs glanced to the demon, "I need to talk to… to your father."
Akihiko looked up at his mother with worried eyes, her gentle hands brushing aside the white locks.
"Okay?"
"Kay," the boy mumbled as he glanced towards the elder demon, Sesshomaru shooting the half-demon an encouraging smile before the boy was led to his room, the door shutting behind him before Rin rounded on Akihiko's father.
"Akihiko has ears are almost as sharp as yours," she informed the demon, "so get upstairs. I don't want him to hear us."
Sesshomaru said nothing but followed her up the stairs, the door to her bedroom opened before he stepped through, the demon turning to look at the young woman.
"Rin-"
His words were cut off by a harsh slap across his cheek, her nails cutting into the flesh over his cheekbones, a thin red line left in its wake.
"How dare you," she whispered, fury etched onto her face, "five years; five years and I don't get so much as a phone call and then you show up in my house with my son beside you!"
"Our son-"
"He's not-" she began screaming at him, her head turning in the direction of her bedroom door, her voice quieting to a harsh and furious whisper, "he is not your son!"
"He's my child," Sesshomaru repeated dangerously.
"By blood only," Rin snarled at him, her brown eyes full of anger and resentment, "you were never there for him or me! You are not a father in the ways that count!"
"Be that as it may-"
"You were never there to change a dirty diaper, you were never there to sooth an injury, you were never there to help me when I needed you most!"
"That's what this is about!?" Sesshomaru snapped at her, his eyes looking at her in disbelief, "I'm talking about a child that you've kept from me for years!"
"It was only five," she retorted, "five years that you didn't call me or talk to me or want me and now you want to call him yours!?"
"He is mine," the demon seethed, "and I believe I do have a right to him, even if I need to take you to court for it."
"We were never married and I am neither abusive nor neglecting," Rin practically growled before she inhaled a deep, shuttering breath. "You will get custody of him," the young woman told him dangerously, "when you step over my cold and lifeless body, and even then, you'd be the last person I'd leave him too! I am never giving that boy up, not to anyone and especially not to you! I'll die before I let you raise my son!"
"You'd deny me my own son?" Sesshomaru whispered, his eyes wide as Rin took in a steadying breath.
"You sound surprised," Rin snarled, "since I've already told you he is not your son."
"He wants me as a father," the demon told her, "and if you wanted me out of his life so badly, you should have known how dangerous it would be to keep Kagome and my brother informed!"
"Of course I thought about that!" the young woman snapped, "I just…"
"Just what?"
Rin bit her lower lip as she sucked in a deep breath.
"I guess I just thought that maybe a little trust wouldn't kill me; that maybe having someone on my side would be a good thing," her tearful eyes fixed him with a steely glare, "my mistake… again I might add."
"Rin," Sesshomaru started softly, "please, I'm sorry for what I've done, I'm sorry that I… that I broke you," he swallowed thickly, "but we were together for nearly two years!" the dog demon told her, "you were so much more to me than a one night stand!"
"Oh yes!" Rin told him, her voice raising an octave, tears now slipping down her cheeks, "how could I forget, you made that so clear to me five years ago!"
"What I did was a mistake-"
"Which one!" she yelled at him, "being with me or getting me pregnant?"
"Neither," he snapped, "leaving you was my biggest mistake!"
Rin let the silence fall between them, her eyes searching his while she let her tears fall.
"Well you got over that," she told him softly, the deadly edge in her voice, Sesshomaru trying not to flinch at her words, "you managed to move on, found a new woman and everything."
"Don't-"
"Don't what," she asked him exasperatedly, "you're in the tabloids as often as your arranged fiancée; you think I wouldn't read about it? I'm not trying to start anything I'm just pointing out facts, Sesshomaru!"
"That-That-"
"Speechless," Rin murmured, shaking her head, "you're finally speechless and all I had to say was something about the arranged marriage that you never told me about."
"Rin, let me explain-"
"Explain what!?" she cried, tears falling from her eyes relentlessly, "explain your reasoning for your new life?! I don't need it, you moved on like I did. You... you made your company stronger, you found someone else, I get it!" her hand covered her eyes as she continued to cry, "what I don't get is why you're here!"
"I'm here because that little boy came into my office three weeks ago looking for his father, a son I never knew I had," Sesshomaru told her, his finger pointing towards the door where the child slept, "and you want to take that from him?!"
"No," she whispered softly, "no I just don't want my little boy to get his heart broken like mine when you decide that this is no longer convenient enough for you!"
The demon just stared at her, his eyes wide in surprise at her voice, his heart feeling like it stopped at her words.
"You'd think I'd do that?" he asked her softly, "do you honestly think I would do that to my son?"
"No," she repeated, "I know you would, it's exactly what you did with me, it's what you've already done to him, why would now be any different?"
"Because he's my son-"
"That you didn't know you had for five, years," Rin emphasized, "if you really cared about him, you would have found some way to get in touch with me, at least call me!"
"I wanted to-"
"Bullshit!" she snarled at him, "you do what you want, when you want," he chest heaved as she gulped down deep breaths, her hand to her head as she shook her head, "you know what? Just go. Just…just leave us alone."
"Rin-"
"I don't need you!" she screamed at him, "I haven't needed you in five years, my son hasn't needed you, for five years!" her lip quivered slightly, "thanks to you, I can't trust anyone, what good could possibly come of you in his life? What if you do that to him?"
"He came looking for me," Sesshomaru told her softly, "he's the one who wants a father in his life; why is that such a bad thing!?"
"Because history has a habit of repeating itself," Rin snapped, "and I won't have you leave my son!"
"I WILL NOT LEAVE HIM!"
Both adults fell silent as the demon's roar practically echoed in the empty room, his own chest heaving as he stared into the crying chocolate orbs.
"I will not leave him," the demon repeated, "nor will I leave you… not again…"
Rin's mouth was open as she intended to yell at him anew, her eyes narrowing as the young woman moved past the demon, confusion on Sesshomaru's brow until she pulled open the door to reveal their little boy sitting on his knees with tears streaming down his cheeks.
"A-Akihiko…"
"Wh… What do you m-mean he's not my d-daddy mommy?" the boy hiccoughed, "he-he said he is! Wh-Why would he lie to me?!"
"He-He didn't," the young woman stammered slightly, "but-"
"So why are you yelling that he isn't mommy?!" Akihiko started crying by this point, tears falling from his cheeks, "you said you wouldn't lie to me, you promised!"
"I-I'm not lying honey-"
"Yes you are!" the boy whimpered, "YES YOU ARE!"
"Akihiko," Sesshomaru interjected softly as he kneeled to his son, "please, -"
"Y-You're lying too!" Akihiko sobbed, "y-you never told me y-you left!"
"You mean-"
The demon turned to look at the young woman standing behind him, Rin now avoiding his gaze.
"Y-You never told him?"
Rin's brown eyes avoided his, her arms over her chest as she licked her lips.
"You never told him I left?"
"S-So you did leave?!" the boy hiccoughed, the attention brought back to their small son, his hands over his eyes as he sobbed, "wh-why daddy?! Wh-Why would you leave mommy?! A-After you said you loved her!"
"Akihiko-"
"Why does everyone lie to me!" Akihiko screamed, "I-I just- I just want my mommy and daddy… together… like every other kid!"
"Sweetheart," Rin tried, her own heart breaking as she reached for her son, "please-"
"NO!" the boy sobbed, "DON'T TOUCH ME! I HATE YOU BOTH!"
Sesshomaru called for his son while the young woman appeared both shocked and on the verge of tears, her hand over her heart and her mouth.
"Rin-"
"Get out."
The demon felt a chill in his veins at the darkness of the voice, her tearful brown eyes rising to meet his.
"I never told him about you only because I don't want him to get a false impression about you," Rin informed him, "I either make you out to be this beast that left me for no reason or I glorify you to be-" she paused for a moment her eyes searching as Sesshomaru watched her, wanting to press her further, her lungs inhaling deeply before she continued, "or I make you out to be the kind, caring, demon who loved me with everything he could, who-who made me feel like I mattered to him. Besides, the father he wants never existed in the first place," Rin whispered, the words twisting a knife in his chest, "the loving, compassionate man he wants as a dad would never leave him, at any stage of his life or development."
"Rin," the demon murmured softly, his eyes looking at her with flecks of pain and hurt, the young woman turning from him.
"Just get out," the young woman told him, "I don't need you! You've managed to ruin my relationship with my son! I hope you're pleased with yourself!"
"Rin, stop!" Sesshomaru gripped her arm as she made to leave the room, "I've never meant to hurt you-"
"But that's the result," Rin pointed out as tears slipped down her cheeks, "so can you please just leave! You've already caused enough damage!"
The demon opened his mouth to retort, the sorrow and anger in her eyes stopping him, his lips shutting while he swallowed thickly. Straightening up, Sesshomaru let her slim arm slip through his fingers, his own amber eyes flecked with pain.
Rin said nothing as she turned on her heel and marched down the stairs, the demon left standing in the hall with his own heart broke. Slowly, his own feet moved down the stairs, his eyes catching sight of the young woman knocking on her son's door, the sound of tears emanating from the boy's room. Resisting the urge to move to his son's side, the demon forced himself out the front door before he received a glare from the woman he loved unconditionally.
"Rin," the demon murmured as he stepped one foot out the front door, her tearstained face turning from her son's door to his form, "… I'm sorry."
"Too late," Rin told him in a soft whisper, "it's too late Sesshomaru."
Duskhad settled almost quickly for the young woman, bringing heavy rains with the night. Her little son never leaving his room though Rin had knocked repeatedly on the door. The young mother walked down the halls, a mug of steaming tea in her hands, her red-rimmed eyes staring blankly at the ground, her feet taking her back to the door of her only child, her heart heavy as she knocked softly on the door.
"Akihiko?" she tried softly, "sweetie? It's-It's mommy. C-Can we talk for a bit?"
The boy did not stir nor answer her, the silence emanating from the room deafening to her, her breath shuddering as she tried a second time.
"Akihiko?" the young woman called again, her hand on the door to the boy's room, "can we talk?"
Rin felt her heart sink when the room remained silent, the hand on her tea mug tightening as her heart did, her mind worried that she may have destroyed everything she held dear.
"Akihiko," she tried again, this time opening the door, "I need to talk to you about everything."
Her eyes wandered the dark room, the sound of rain coming from the open window worried her, her tea placed on the top of his dresser while she ran faster to his bed, the comforter torn off to reveal stacked pillows, Rin's brown eyes widening enormously at the sight of her missing son.
"My God," she whispered looking from the bed to the window, her heart tightening, "Akihiko!"
