EPILOGUE
DPOV
"I don't like this."
Rose, who stood beside me, sighed. "God, Dimitri. Stop whining. They aren't doing anything wrong."
I glared at the boy sitting next to Inna on my couch. They were talking and didn't even notice our presence. "He's holding her hand."
Rose rolled her eyes. "Yeah, well, he is her boyfriend."
"She's only fourteen!" I hissed.
Rose let out another sigh and pulled me back into the kitchen. "You have to stop worrying, comrade. They're just holding hands. It's nothing serious."
"But-"
"Please be nice to Tyler. It's Christmas, for God's sake."
"What's that supposed to mean? I haven't said anything wrong-"
"No, but the way you keep glaring at him…" Rose gave me a pointed look. "You're scaring him. He's just a boy and he likes Inna very much. Just give him a chance, okay?"
I looked at her defiantly, but she just stared right back at me, a stubborn look in her eyes. There was no way I was going to win this staring contest, just like all the other ones we'd had over the years. My wife got me whipped and she knew it.
"Fine," I grumbled, giving in at last. "I'll be nicer to Taylor."
"His name is Tyler and you know it," Rose said. Sighing, she wrapped her arms around my neck and pecked my lips. "You'll make Inna happy if you give him a chance."
"Yeah, yeah," I muttered. "Thank God Alisa has no interest in boys."
"Yet," Rose said with a smile.
I groaned. Just the thought of my youngest daughter coming home one day with a boy… It was going to be a nightmare.
"If I were you, I'd get used to it," Rose said, still smiling. "There'll be lots of boyfriends coming over before they'll find their prince and get married."
"Ugh. I don't want to think about that," I said, already getting nauseous at the thought. "As long as they know there won't be any boys going up their room. Not until they're eighteen."
Rose laughed and shook her head. "Sometimes you're really old-fashioned, comrade."
"I'm just looking out for my daughters," I mumbled. "I don't want them to get hurt."
"They'll get hurt no matter what," Rose said. "You trying to keep them locked up in the house until they're grown up will not change that."
I sighed. "I know."
"Just let them enjoy their youth," Rose said, stroking my cheek. "And don't worry too much. They'll be fine."
I smiled and wrapped my arms around her waist. "When did you get so wise, Roza?"
She smirked. "I've always been wise, comrade."
I chuckled. "I love you, you know that right?"
She nodded, smiling. "I know. And I love you too." She kissed my lips again. "Now go talk to Tyler. Make him feel welcome here." She patted my chest. "See it as a practice for when Alisa gets a boyfriend. By the time we have a daughter, you'll be excellent at being a father-in-law."
I blinked. "What?"
"Go to Inna and Tyler now," she said, pushing me out of the kitchen before I could ask what she meant by that.
I did as my wife asked and went to the living room, where Inna and Tyler were watching a movie. Alisa had come in too and was sitting next to Inna, sneaking glances at Tyler.
I cleared my throat. "Does anyone want anything to drink?"
"Yeah, sure," Inna replied.
I turned to look at Tyler. "You too, Tyler?"
His eyes widened briefly, but then nodded quickly. "Yes, thank you, Sir."
I returned to the kitchen. "Hey, Roza, what did you mean when you said-"
"Nothing, comrade," she interrupted. "I'm tired. I'm going upstairs to take a nap."
I stared after her as she hurried out of the kitchen. That was odd. The rest of the afternoon, I kept a watchful eye on Inna and Tyler. Nothing really happened, but I was still relieved when he finally left.
"So, that wasn't so bad, huh?" Rose asked me later that night when we lay in bed.
"Hmm?"
"I'm talking about Tyler. And Inna."
I sighed and closed my book. "I guess not," I answered reluctantly, looking at her.
She smiled and sat up in bed. "Good."
"What are you doing?" I asked as she walked across the room and started rummaging through the closet.
"I know we're supposed to exchange our gifts tomorrow when we're going to your mother," she said, "but I want to give this to you now."
She walked back and sat down next to me on the bed. "Here," she said, handing me a small bag. "Merry Christmas."
I looked at the bag curiously before taking it. Rose looked at me anxiousy, biting her lip, as I pulled out a T-shirt. There was text printed on it. "What…"
My eyes widened as I read it and my head shot up to look at Roza, who was grinning. I looked back down at the T-shirt. My boys scored. Just call me daddy!
"You… you are pregnant?" I stammered, looking back up at Rose.
She nodded. "I thought you could wear it tomorrow when we're going to your family," she said with a grin.
"Oh my God, Roza," I said, shocked. "You're pregnant!"
A smile broke out on my face and I pulled her to me, hugging her tight.
She wrapped her arms around me and murmured, "Are you happy?"
I pulled back and kissed her fiercely. "Of course I'm happy. We're going to have a baby."
She smiled, tears leaking out of the corner of her eyes.
"How far along are you?" I asked.
"A month," she admitted.
"And you waited this long to tell me?"
"I wasn't sure at first. I just thought I was late, but then I took a pregnancy test two weeks ago and it came out positive. I took another one last week to be sure."
I smiled and kissed her again. "We're going to have a baby, Roza," I said, putting my hand on her still flat stomach. Suddenly, I realized something. "Is that why you said that earlier? About me being an excellent father-in-law by the time we'd have a daughter?" She grinned. "So you think it's a girl?"
Rose shrugged. "I think so. But it doesn't really matter to me if it's a girl of a boy. I'll love it no matter what."
"I hope it's a boy," I said grinning. "I need more male support around here."
"Hey, you got Liam!" Rose said.
"You're with three. We're only with the two of us," I defended.
Rose laughed and wrapped her arms around my neck. "I love you, Dimitri," she murmured, kissing my lips. "And I love this baby," she added, putting her hand on mine that was still resting on her stomach.
"So do I," I murmured, holding her in my arms.
Now, eight months later, I was remembering this conversation as I held my newborn baby in my arms, overcome with happiness. I sat down on the edge of the hospital bed, where Rose lay, exhausted from giving birth. Inna, Alisa and Liam were on their way to the hospital with my parents. They'd come over to our house when Rose went into labor.
"I told you it would be a girl," she murmured smiling.
I smiled, looking down at my baby girl. "Yeah, you were right. Like always," I added, looking up at her.
Her smile widened. "Don't worry. Next time, it's going to be a boy."
She held out her hands and I placed our little girl in her arms. I sat down next to her and wrapped my arms around her and our baby.
"Next time?" I asked, trying not to sound too eager. I wouldn't mind having another baby with Rose.
She looked up at me, grinning. "Yeah. I'm pretty sure there will be a next time."
I smiled and kissed her gently on the lips. "I love you, Roza. And you too, baby girl," I added as I looked down at our sleeping angel. She was just perfect. "You should probably rest, Roza, before the others arrive."
"I don't want to. I want to keep looking at our little girl. She's so beautiful," Rose cooed.
"I know. Just like you," I murmured, kissing her hair.
A few hours later, my family arrived, along with Ivan, Christian and Lissa. The kids were excited to meet their little sister. I had to calm them down so they wouldn't wake her up.
"What are you going to name her?" Christian asked.
I looked at Rose. I'd let her decide the name.
"Her name is Annabelle," she answered smiling. "Annabelle Belikova."
"So no middle name?" Christian said.
"Ugh no, that would be too much. And I don't have a middle name either," Rose said with a shrug.
"Well, I think it's a beautiful name," my mother said smiling.
The next day, Rose and Annabelle were released from the hospital.
"I think we're going to have to buy a bigger car," Rose noted. My parents had taken Inna, Alisa and Liam with them for lunch and they'd drop them off later at our house. It was just Rose, Annabelle and me now.
"Yeah, I think so too," I said, opening the car door for her. I helped her sit down and then placed Annabelle in her arms.
Rose smiled up at me. "I don't think I've ever been this happy before."
I leaned in and kissed her lips. "Me neither."
"Let's go home," she whispered.
Starting the car, I drove us back home. When we arrived, my kids were already there waiting for us with my parents. They stayed over for dinner that night. And as I looked around at the table, at my wonderful kids and my loving wife, I realized how perfect my life was. A few years ago, I would have never dreamed of this, but Roza had made it possible by coming into our lives. She was the best thing that ever happened to me and my family.
And I would be forever grateful for having her in my life.
The end. :P
