Busy people milled about on the cobblestone streets, their voices carrying over the sounds of their footsteps as they haggled and bartered for the prices from the vendors and screamed at each other from across the way, silver eyes watching the entire interaction with fascination.
"Are you gonna eat that?"
Allen turned to the sound of the redhead's voice, Lavi watching the cream and jam covered scone that hung out of the vampire's mouth with hunger.
"It's already been in his mouth," Kanda snapped, his arms still crossed over his chest and a scowl across his face.
"I'll just cut off that part," Lavi brushed off, "so-"
"Mph sfill eaphing," Allen mumbled through a mouthful of food, his finger pushing in the scone, crumbs dropping over his plate and his vest, the unscarred hand brushing off the pieces as best he could.
"And could you be a messier eater?" the Japanese spat at the vampire, "we're in public!"
"For the first time in forever," the younger stretched happily, his eyes enjoying the sights of the city, a goofy grin plastered to his face, "and it feels great."
"Don't go too nuts now," the redhead teased, "don't want to alert the Order to you."
"Trust me, I have no intention of going nuts," Allen smiled into his tea, "this is also the first time I'm not afraid of being out in public…"
"Why should you be afraid to go out in public," Kanda muttered, "you're the creature in their nightmares…"
"But right now… I'm nothing to be feared," the vampire murmured, "since I filled up on blood before I got here, I'm not hungry… meaning I don't need to worry that I might just randomly attack someone."
"So if you're full, why did we need to stop at this café!?" Lavi protested, his hand reaching to cup the back of his head while he whimpered in pain.
"Because you insisted," the hunter snapped at him, his cobalt eyes narrowing, "and he's eaten as much as you have!"
"Yeah… but-"
"I still need human food too," Allen grinned, "you should know that after all your research!"
Lave pouted as he sat back in his chair, his arms crossed over his chest in the same fashion Kanda's was, the Japanese pushing his uneaten scone towards the vampire.
"Here," Kanda muttered dully, "eat mine if you're that hungry."
"Aw Yuu!" Lavi whined, "why can't I have it!?"
"Because of the two of you, he's less irritating," the Japanese grumbled as Allen tucked in, the pastry slathered in thick cream and jam before nearly devoured by the creature, "and he eats way more than you do…"
"Spoil-sport," the redhead grumbled as he pushed off from the table, "I'll be right back, just going to settle up."
"Fine," Kanda nodded to the passing young man, his cobalt eyes flickering over to look at the vampire who was watching the people pass by on the street, his silver eyes flickering from one person to the other.
"Are people really so interesting to watch?"
Allen turned to look at the other, his napkin wiping away the clotted cream on the corner of his lip before he glanced back out to the streets.
"You can say that," the demon murmured, his voice almost wistful, "it's more like… I'm fascinated by how much I'm still like them… that I can still fit in with them… for now anyway."
Kanda said nothing as he watched the vampire smile as if in fond memory, the Japanese choosing to busy himself with the tea while Lavi paid their bill.
Allen had, over the past two weeks, become increasingly stir-crazy, sighing and huffing at every little thing to the extent that Kanda now found meditation increasingly difficult, the vampire and the hunter constantly at each other's throats until Lavi offered to take the younger out while he went shopping, a begrudging Kanda following all the while.
"So, where to next?"
Both heads turned to look at the approaching redhead, Lavi taking to lean on the back of the chair as he looked from one to the other.
"It's your shopping," Kanda muttered as he stood from the table, "I'll grab the groceries while we're here, but you said you needed some more test tubes or something."
"The store's not too far away," Lavi jerked his head to the line of shops, "so, why don't I go and get the equipment and you and Allen can get a jump start on the groceries, okay?"
"Fine," the Japanese grumbled to the redhead's retreating back, Allen watching the entire interaction with fascination.
"Does he… always do that?" Allen asked, his body pulling up to stand and follow the elder through the café and out the front door.
"You've hung around us for, what, two months now?" the Japanese glanced over his shoulder at the vampire, "you haven't figured that out by now?"
"Didn't think he did that sort of thing in public," the younger admitted under his breath, his eyes trailing over the stalls they approached with renewed interested, the Japanese grabbing a basked
"He's just like that," Kanda muttered as he slowly began to pick and feel at the fruits and vegetables, a red tomato held gently in his fingers, "always has been."
Allen nodded as he looked over at the fresh food, the smells filling his nostrils making his already full stomach growl lightly.
"How are you still hungry," Kanda asked as he slipped tomatoes into his basket, his hand reaching for a large onion, "you just ate!"
"Always been like that," the vampire murmured as he sniffed as a large purple vegetable, "what is this?"
"An eggplant," the Japanese explained, "you've never had one?"
"I did… once," Allen admitted as he glanced over to the shop keeper, the man clearly engaged in a haggling with a vicious old woman, the vampire leaning towards the other, his voice in a whisper, "I… as a kid I stole one once, when I was living on the street. Ate the thing raw," his face scrunched, "tasted awful."
"It would," Kanda murmured, "they're meant to be cooked."
"You've eaten them before?"
"They crop up in Japanese cooking sometimes," the elder explained, "they're not hard to make."
"So… could you make me one?" Allen asked, as smile on his face as Kanda turned to look at him, the cobalt eyes flickering from the cheeky grin to the purple plant.
"The rabbit hates it anyway," Kanda muttered as he plucked two more to the basket, Allen slipping his in with a bright grin.
"You know a lot about Lavi," the vampire commented, his hand grabbing the celery Kanda pointed too, "were you guys partners?"
"Not exclusively," the Japanese murmured, "see, we'd get sent off on missions by the order with whoever was available and what skills were required. Since Lavi and I are the same age and have the about the same experience, we'd often go on missions together."
"So… were you on the mission… when he went missing?"
Cobalt eyes turned to look at the young creature, the vampire flushing lightly as he pressed on.
"H-He mentioned it… once or twice," Allen mumbled, "no details just… in passing."
Kanda turned back to the stand, his hand digging though his pockets to pull out the money for the smiling vendor.
The younger bit his lip as he wrapped his arms around a large paper bag all but shoved into his hands, the vampire following after Kanda as the Japanese moved towards a farmer's wife, the young woman accepting the money for the half dozen eggs Kanda bought.
"We were… on the same mission."
"Huh?"
Kanda turned to look back at Allen as he slipped the eggs into a second paper bag.
"When… When Lavi was taken, he and I were assigned to the same mission," the Japanese repeated, "there weren't that many, but enough to separate us. Ten minutes late, when I went looking for him, the only thing I could find was a man who had his throat torn out and no Lavi. We looked for a week, no sign of him. The Order, and myself, had assumed the Noah had murdered him or worse. It was only two weeks after his disappearance did he finally reappear; in a hospital, without a scratch on him."
"And the Noah just… let him go?"
"That was the Order's thought," Kanda nodded, "did about three months' worth of tests on him to make sure he wasn't brainwashed or anything. When they couldn't find anything, they put him on leave, and made me babysit."
"And… these experiments…"
"The Order has no clue about you," the Japanese reiterated, "and if they did, I guarantee you, that monster in you will seem tame to what they can come up with."
"And you know this because-"
"Lavi's got a bigger mouth than you," Kanda snapped, "I know for a fact he told you about my past. You can probably infer the rest with that information."
Allen nodded slowly as he followed the other, his feet stopping quickly as the smell of fresh baker's bread reached his nostrils.
"Hungry moyashi?" Kanda teased, his head gesturing to the growling stomach, Allen scowling as he flushed lightly.
"How can you not be with that smell," Allen shot back, "seriously, the smell of fresh bread is torture to a street urchin!" his lungs inhaled deeply through his nose, his mouth salivating at the aroma, "could we get some?"
"Urchin or bread?"
Kanda snorted at the disgruntled look Allen shot him.
"Bread please," the vampire muttered sarcastically, his eyes glancing to the baguettes in the shop's windows.
"Fine," the Japanese sighed deeply, "give me a minute."
Allen smiled as he leaned against the wall, his arms holding onto their groceries for the day while his head rested with his eyes closed, his body feeling more and more relaxed with each passing day, the bonds he was forming with the hunters ones he thought he could never have again.
… How sweet…
The young man gasped as his eyes opened to the sun, his golden orb quivering in fear.
"You're late."
Lavi looked up at the man that sat across from him at the table, the sly grin plastered to the dark skin and the golden eyes equally smirking.
"If I came earlier I'd get to meet your family again," Lavi commented softly, "I'm not exactly ready for them yet."
"And I'm not ready to share you, ever," Tyki smirked, his fingers tapping against each other in front of his face, "want something to eat?"
"Already had something to eat," the redhead informed him, his eyes flickering to the menu, "and besides, I can't exactly afford this stuff."
"I can," the vampire murmured, "and I've told you-"
"I'm not dressed for a formal dinner," Lavi interrupted as he stood from the table, "and I just came to stop by; I need to be getting back."
"Surely you can stay for a moment," Tyki murmured as he stood with the younger, his hands and feet swift as they maneuvered Lavi throughout the tables and to the back alleyway, Lavi feeling his back slam against the wall.
"Tyki-"
"Now, tell me," Tyki murmured as he pinned Lavi between the wall and his arms, "just what did you eat that prevented you from eating with me?"
The redhead's answer was muffled by a pair of firm lips on his, the slim muscle sliding in to touch and taste the younger, a moan slipping from the back of Lavi's throat.
"You taste sweeter than usual," the vampire whispered over the other's lips, "and… cream?"
"Sc-Scones," Lavi panted softly, "A-Allen asked if we could stop and get something to eat… he wanted scones…"
"Oh… so the boy wanted scones," the elder teased, "and? How were they?"
"T-They were g-good," the other sighed as lips kissed and sucked at his throat, "A-Allen l-liked them…"
"You might want to stop talking about the boy so much," Tyki smirked, "I might start getting jealous-"
Lavi's green eyes opened at the sudden ceasing of kisses, his head turning to look at the now frozen vampire, the hands that had pinned themselves around the younger were now curling in agony, the nails beginning to dig into the brickwork as Tyki's knees gave out beneath him.
"Tyki? Tyki! TYKI!"
Arms slid under the taller body as Lavi attempted to help support the elder, the golden eyes wide in terror and strangled sounds slipped from the parted lips, his body shuddering and twitching in pain.
"Tyki!? Tyki can you hear me-"
"… b… br… brother…"
Lavi froze at the sound of the higher pitched voice emanating from Tyki's lips, the elongating black nails managing to rip through the material of the white gloves, the open mouth revealing elongating fangs.
"T-Tyki-"
"Get… away…"
The golden eyes finally looked up towards the hunter, the sight chilling Lavi to the bone.
Any trace of the vampire that would croon sweet nothings softly into his ear after a night of passion was gone, nothing but a monster stared back at him.
"Get… away… n-now," Tyki struggled before a second wave of unspeakable pain overtook him, his body curling in agony, "b-brother… b-back…"
"Tyki!"
"NOW!"
Lavi flinched at the roar that escaped the beast's mouth, the now terrifyingly long fangs reflected on the sun's rays, the already dark pigment on the skin turning near black before the younger's eyes. Fear ran through the redhead's system as a clawed hand reached to tear at him, his feet reacting as he skittered around the monster, his heart heavy as he bolted from the alley, the monster that was his lover left thrashing in agony.
"Kanda!"
The Japanese turned to look at the approaching other, the body in his arms twitching and thrashing, the voice emanating from the lips tearful and strained, the nails dragging on the cement.
"Wh-What-"
"He just started," Kanda muttered as he turned back to the younger, "I came out and found him like this."
Lavi nodded as he moved around to look at the young vampire, his face widening in surprise at the sight of the tearstained cheeks and fanged mouth open as he cried, his nails, now slowly shrinking, were held on tight to the arm around his neck, Kanda's other arm around the slim waist.
The Japanese had stepped from the shop only to find an unattended bag of groceries on the ground, his eyes narrowing as he took the bag with him towards the alleyway, his cobalt eyes watching in shock as the vampire lay on the ground, his body thrashing in agony.
In a heartbeat, Kanda had been to Allen's side, only to jump back as the younger took a swing at him with now hardened nails, the golden eyes replacing the laughing silver Allen had sported throughout the afternoon. With speed that would make the wind envious, the monster within the young man launched at the hunter, Kanda's instincts equally as reactive.
The vampire coughed as a wrist slammed into his trachea, Kanda catching the monster of guard long enough to shove him into a headlock, the long claws grappling and scraping at the flesh, his voice changing from a roar to a scream, the tears spilling slowly from his eyes.
"K-K-Kanda!" Allen managed to sob out as his body thrashed in pain, "h-help m-me! Help me please!"
"Okay, okay," Kanda murmured softly as he tried to sooth the other, "shh… I'm right here, stay with me."
"H-He's loud," the younger gulped, "he-he's louder than he-he was!"
"Stay with me," the Japanese repeated, the body twitching in his arms, "just stay here."
A foot stepping around him brought Kanda from his memory, the cobalt eyes turning from the crying creature that had now gripped onto his jacket to assure himself that there was something to hold onto.
"Lavi," Kanda panted as he held the shivering and sobbing vampire, "if you want to help this guy, your time is running out, and quickly."
