Chapter Nine

I walked silently through the forest behind Carver and his "pals". Luke and Nick had warned me to stay back and stay out of their way, so that's what I was gonna do. When we left Carver had said we were looking for supplies; food, medicine, hell anything we could use back at camp. My gun was shoved into the back of my jeans as I trailed silently behind them, not coming across any walkers.

I raised my gun as I heard a twig snap behind me. I was pointing my gun towards an older man, who had a rifle. He was nice enough, took us to his group who had supplies and food.

"Come back to our camp with us." Carver said kindly. "We have more supplies and there are lots of people there."

"Thanks for the offer, but we're fine here."

Carver stepped towards the man. "I ask you to reconsider." I stared between the two, my gut telling me to get out of there.

The leader of the other group had his hand on his gun. "Please leave."

Carver raised his gun, shooting the guy right through the face. Bonnie and I ran, hiding behind trees as we shot blindly at the others. What the hell?! Those people weren't doing anything wrong! My hand shook as I shot, unable to keep the horrible memories away any longer.

I folded my arms over the chest. "Can both of you stop?!" I looked between Lily and Carley with a frown on my face. "Lily, how can you possibly think Ben or Carley would do anything like that?"

Lily glared at me. "Maybe you helped them! You always were close to him." She pointed to Ben. "Maybe it was you." I rolled my eyes impatiently. "You're just a scared little girl. Get the fuck over it." Carley told Lily as she looked over at Kenny, who was walking back at us. I let out a scream as I heard the gunshot, looking over at Carley who was now dead on the ground. I shook violently, lunging at Lily. "YOU FUCKING BITCH!" I screamed, slamming her against the RV. "You killed her! YOU MURDERED HER!"

I hid behind a tree, shooting blindly at the group behind me. I was shaking, my fingers hardly able to grasp the trigger anymore. I quit firing when I was out of bullets, a blank look on my face. I slowly followed Bonnie out of the cover of the trees, trying my best not to stare at the dead bodies on the ground. Carver and the other two men had their guns pointing at three people.

"Tasha." Carver said, waving me over. I slowly walked over to him, afraid of what he was going to say.

Carver put his revolver in my hand. "I need you to kill these three people."

"What?" I asked as I stared at the three people crying on the ground.

"These people denied our kindness, shoot them."

I raised my gun, pointing it at a man on the ground. My hand shook violently. "I... I can't."

"Oh, you will." Carver said as he grabbed another gun from Troy. "If you don't kill them, you'll have the exact same fate."

"I promise you, Nick. I'll be safe. I'll come back."

I stared at the three shaking bodies in front of me, pointing my gun at the man on the left. I promised Nick I would come back... And I couldn't break that promise.

BANG!

BANG!

BANG!

I stared lifelessly at the ground as we walked back to camp. My mind was racing with the terrible images of the three innocent lives I destroyed... Images of all the terrible things I've seen.

Carver took me to his tent, I had no idea why but at the moment I didn't care.

"Now, I know you must be upset about what happened back there."

Understatement of the year.

"I only did that because you need to toughen up. This is our work now. The weak perish, and the strong survive. Its kill or be killed."

I looked at him as he spoke. I didn't believe any of it. Those who are strong survive, sure but that didn't mean the weak didn't. People who were willing to do the harder things would live... Did that mean I was thinking just like Carver?

"I now see that you are very useful." Carver smiled at me. "I would like you to join my more, higher up camp members." His voice was so calm, yet I could feel he was just trying to manipulate me.

"Can I have some time to think it over at least? I'm pretty exhausted." I told him kindly. What was the saying? Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

Carver smiled. "Of course. "

"You have a week to decide."

As I left Carver's tent, I felt more and more sick. I began to run away from there, standing against a tree before throwing up across the grass. I wasn't a murderer... I did what I had to do...

So why didn't I believe it?
