I was currently in a movie theater with Kaitlin, Seth, and Holly. I was trying my best not to cry, even though the ending was really sad. I didn't understand how someone could watch a movie like this. Why would anyone want to see the main character die?
"Are you okay?" Kaitlin asked me.
"This movie sucked, but I still want to cry." I pointed out. I then looked over to Seth. "At least I'm not the only one crying."
"I'm allergic." Seth wept. He looked to Seth. "Tomorrow we're watching football okay."
"Football season is five months away." Holly pointed out.
"Then we're watching soccer." Seth corrected.
"How about we see a comedy next time?" I suggested to Kaitlin.
"If it saves me the waterworks, then okay." Kaitlin teased me.
"You know crying's not so bad." I pointed out. "It's the main reason that I'm here. I also cried a lot when I was growing up. It was mostly when I was by myself."
"We should get some smoothies from that new juice place." Seth suggested. I couldn't help but wonder if he was trying to cheer me up.
"I love smoothies." I responded. "But I don't need to be cheered up."
We went to the juice shop and there was Julie sitting with Luke. I was glad that Marissa wasn't there to see it. She would have freaked.
In the morning, I was getting dressed when Seth walked in. I couldn't believe that I didn't close the door. Thankfully, I did have a bra on and I quickly finished pulling down my grey t-shirt, which I had paired with a denim miniskirt.
"Sorry." He apologized, covering his eyes. "I can't believe that that's never happened before, not that I wanted it to happen, but the probability is low."
"Seth, quit while you're behind." I instructed.
"Where are you going?" He asked.
"I'm going to find Luke to beat the crap of him." I replied. I knew that he wouldn't hit a girl.
"Oh, where shall this can of whoopass be opened?" He inquired.
At that moment, Holly walked in.
"So I just got off the phone with Luke." She stated. "It turns that he was trying to tell Julie that he was moving to Portland. He also said that he wants to apologize to Marissa."
"There's a long list of things that he needs to apologize for." I stated. "It could take all day. I don't know if she has time for that."
"Hey, I'm just the messenger." Holly stated.
"What's the message?" Kaitlin asked as she walked in.
"According to Holly, Luke wants to apologize to Marissa before he leaves town." I recapped.
"I don't think any good would come from that." Kaitlin commented. She then looked at me. "So are you excited about tonight?"
Tonight was when Sandy and Jimmy's restaurant was opening.
"Do you think that it's going to go well?" I asked.
"Well it could or it could completely tank." She answered. "But even if they fail, they'll at least know that they tried their best."
"So have you ever thought about trying to figure out the mess of relationships around here?" I asked.
"Let's see, my mom is dating your grandma who sleeping cheated on with Holly's ex, meanwhile Holly is dating your brother, while also having dated my sister. Also my dad is dating your aunt, who previously is the sister of his ex, your mother." Kaitlin explained. "All I know is we're meant to be."
"So how is Marissa doing by the way?" I questioned. "You didn't tell her, did you?"
"Of course I didn't." She stated. "I know that would only cause her to run away again. However, she does want to meet us for lunch at the pier."
So within half an hour, we were at the pier. Lunch went well and we got some ice cream afterwards.
"So I'm glad that Mom at least stopped seeing Luke." Marissa remarked.
"I actually heard that Luke is moving to Portland." I commented. Marissa looked at me, wondering how I would know that. "Holly told me."
I wasn't sure how to ask if she was even interested in an apology from him. I also had a strange feeling that he would be a country singer someday.
"He might want to apologize." I added.
"No." Marissa replied. I hoped that we could just end it there. "I can't forgive him. If sleeping with my girlfriend wasn't enough, sleeping with my mother is unforgivable."
"Okay." I responded. "I won't bring it up again."
"It's a whole part of my life that I just want to let go." Marissa replied. "I want to keep it in the past."
"So were you still doing things with Taylor?" Kaitlin asked while I tried to keep the window from messing up my hair to no avail.
"We really haven't talked since we made out." Marissa stated.
"Speaking of making out…" Kaitlin started before kissing me. Yeah, Marissa was kind of the third wheel. I couldn't help but wonder if people were staring, not that I cared.
It was then that I got a text from Seth saying that Summer had drafted him and Anna into rearranging Marissa's room and we needed to keep her busy for a while.
"So do you want to go see a movie?" I asked Marissa. "I think that you need to do something fun."
"Sure." Marissa replied. Kaitlin just stared at me and I showed her the message. I hoped that Marissa wouldn't be mad about the renovations that they would make. "You're not going to make out in the theater, are you?"
"No." I stated. "I think that we should see an action movie."
"She just doesn't want to cry anymore." Kaitlin teased me.
"Samantha." A voice interrupted. I turned to see Caleb. He walked over to me. "Would you mind if Kaitlin, Marissa, and I had a word privately?
"Um…sure." I responded as I went to get check out a clothing store. I needed a nice dress for tonight. It was kind of nice having enough money that I didn't need to go through my closet, even though some people might think that I was spoiled for living like I did. I didn't see anything wrong with it, especially since I had recently made a donation to a local charity. As soon as I got in the store, Kaitlin called me. "What's up?"
"Caleb wants to marry my mom." She explained.
"How do you feel about it?" I asked.
"I don't know what to say. It's pretty soon for her to get married again." She stated. "Marissa has this crazy plan of telling Caleb about Luke."
"But your mom will go to jail if that happens." I pointed out. "Marissa can't possibly want that, can she? All of the ridicule will be 100 times worse."
"That's what I told her." She stated. "Look, I'll try my best to prevent her from doing it, but I might need some help."
"Okay." I agreed. I didn't particularly like Julie, but I didn't want to see her go to jail, for one reason that Kaitlin wouldn't live next store any more. I really didn't want to see anyone punished for statutory rape to be honest. There were much worse crimes that a person could commit. Hell Jimmy stole a quarter million and managed to avoid jail, but I was pretty sure that Julie wouldn't be afforded the same luxury. It's not even rape if it's consensual.
I then noticed a call from Holly.
"Yes?" I answered.
"Luke will not stop bugging me about talking to Marissa." Holly declared.
"Well Marissa said that she wasn't interested." I remarked. "It's not like he's going to show up at the restaurant tonight and corner her, is he?"
"I wouldn't put it past him." Holly declared. I sighed.
That night, I was in a grey dress with black and white splotches on it. I had a lot to worry about it and I wasn't entirely sure how I would manage to both keep Luke out and keep Marissa from telling Caleb about Luke. It seemed like the drama never stopped in Newport. I was currently with Kaitlin and Marissa sampling the samples when I noticed Seth.
"What's up?" I asked.
"Nothing!" He answered suspiciously. "Why would anything be up?"
"Chill out, Bro. It's just a question." I stated. I get that he didn't want Marissa to know about the surprise redecorating, but he needed to be cooler about it…even though I wasn't sure if he could be cool.
"I'm gonna go pee." He told me. "So if anyone asks, that's where I am…for a while."
"He's getting weirder." Marissa commented.
"That's impossible." I muttered before we saw Julie. Marissa said hello before we walked to a table. I wasn't entirely sure what Holly was doing. It would probably be awkward if she was here and Seth was busy decorating, which I hadn't even had time to tell her about.
It was at that moment that Caleb began to cling on a glass. It seemed like the moment was about to happen.
"Excuse me, everyone, there's something that I have to say." He replied. We stood up and I held Kaitlin's hand tightly. "I hope you're all enjoying yourselves as much as I am, although my enjoyment goes back longer. It can be credited to a very special lady: Julie Cooper."
At that moment, we noticed that Luke walked in.
"What's he doing here?" Kaitlin asked.
I darted away to stop him.
"You need to get out of here." I told him. "You weren't invited."
"She won't even look at me." Luke declared.
"Well you smell like you're drunk and you're dressed too casually for the party." I said.
"I have to talk to Marissa. I have to talk to her." He replied.
It was at that moment that I noticed that Caleb got down on one knee. I actually thought that maybe letting him talk to Marissa could solve both problems as long as they did it outside.
"Julie Cooper, will you marry me?" Caleb asked as he pulled the ring. It looked like it had an emerald in it.
"Yes, of course I will." Julie stated before they kissed. I hoped that would cause Marissa to give up her crazy plan. Luke then stormed out and I had to follow after him.
"Luke." I called as I touched his shoulder.
"Let me go, Bitch." He declared.
"Just give me your keys and I'll drive you home." I offered.
"I drove have a home!" He shouted as he went out to his truck. Fuck, that was bad. Marissa and Kaitlin and Holly then came out.
"I can't believe that he just showed up here." The older Cooper declared.
"I didn't drive here. I need your car to go after him." I replied.
"No." Marissa responded.
"Marissa, he's behind the wheel drunk." I explained. "I'm not taking his side, but I he's a danger to himself and everyone else."
"I'll drive." Marissa remarked. I supposed that would work too. "I still have his number in my phone."
I called him and he really didn't sound like he was too good. His speech was slurred. He said that he was having some beer and listening to Bob Seger, which sounded like something that my dad would do…as in Frank Atwood. It all seemed really sad. How could someone spiral so quickly?
As we continued to drive, we heard sirens and saw some emergency vehicles. I really hoped that didn't mean what I thought that it meant. We got out of the car to investigate. Unfortunately, it did and he had crashed into a lamppost. We noticed that they were putting him on a stretcher. He seemed to be alive. I could only stare at the scene in shock. I didn't even know the guy, but I definitely didn't want that to happen to him. Holly was trying to cover Kaitlin's eyes.
In the morning, we were in the waiting room at the hospital.
"You know when I saw him at the party last night, I wished for something like this to happen." Marissa stated.
"It's not your fault." I muttered.
We got word from his dad that he was going to be okay but he was going to be asleep for a while, so we should go home.
"I think I'm gonna stay here." Holly remarked.
"Me too." Marissa replied.
Kaitlin and I walked outside and the tears began to fall from my eyes. He had gotten extremely lucky.
"I tried my hardest, but I couldn't do anything." I bawled. "I felt some helpless when I saw him."
"Sammy, there are some things that we can't control." Kaitlin explained as she held me tightly. "You don't always have to be the hero."
"But I felt that we could have prevented this." I stated.
"Maybe we could have but we didn't and it's over. He's going to be okay. This isn't another Oliver situation. We both know that we never want to go through anything like that again." She reminded me. I supposed that he could have ended up dead like Oliver.
The other good news is that there was basically no connection made to Julie. I didn't see how there could have been unless the first thing that he said when he woke up was 'Julie', and even then, that could be any number of Julies.
Additionally, Marissa finally did agree to talk to him. From what Holly said, it sounded like it was a real moment and Marissa even forgave him. She may not have been ready to forgive her mom yet, but she would still have time to do that in the future.
We also found out that the restaurant wasn't going to open due to the guy who gives out liquor licenses having an out for Jimmy. It was kind of depressing because they worked so hard only to have the door slammed in their faces. Fortunately, Caleb offered to buy the place. On top of that Marissa really liked what Summer, Seth, and Anna did to her room. It gave her something to be happy about, which she definitely needed.
Even though the place came with a lot of drama, I still loved living in Newport, but I hoped that things would calm down for a while.
