Chapter 3: Sorajima

Back in Cross Academy...

Shindou Nadeshiko's POV

"What do you guys want to know?" Zero asks us. He seems a bit different than normally, he seems... nicer. Although his face still doesn't show any emotions, in his eyes he seems gentler than before. I immediately raise my hand and he nods towards me.

"Where and when were you born?" I ask him. It is a normal standard question, but it's worse to ask it to a fellow student, you actually know for like 2 years already.
"I was born on the 24th of October, 18 years ago, in..."

Zero stops in the middle of his answer. He looks at the floor with a little frown.
"What is it?" I ask him carefully.
"I was wondering." he says. "Do you guys know that guy, Aran Karone?"

The class begins to talk and to discuss about him. I guess he is an idol, because I see a couple of girls squealing and say he is cute. Zero slams on the blackboard for silence. He didn't slam it like he was angry. It looked more like he was tired of the childish behaviour of our classmates.

"Well, it looks like you know him." he says. "Do you also know where he lives?"
I hear some mumbling but not a real answer from the class.
"Aran Karone lives in Sorajima." Zero says. "That's where I come from."

"Huh? That can NOT be true!"

I turn to see who said that. Oh, not HIM! Kenji Karuzawa... I let out a sigh. He hates Zero, and now he decided to talk it's probably only to make Zero angry. I remember how he got jealous of Zero's high grades in our first year here. He thought that if he annoyed Zero long enough, he would beat him up and get kicked out of school. But poor Kenji got to hear from the nurse in the infirmary that Zero was taken in by the chairman and would never be kicked out of the school after he got kicked through the door by Zero.

"Sorajima does not exist! It's a place in Aran's TV series!"

Kenji is angry. He probably didn't like it that Zero was in front of the class the whole time. And now he thinks Zero is talking nonsense. Maybe Zero is talking nonsense, who would be born in a fictional place? Anyway, now I know Aran Karone is an actor.

I look at Zero and he looks as if a fly is bugging him. Like that hysterical blonde guy with his immense monster power on the news... What was his name...?
Oh yeah, Heiwajima Shizuo. Heheh, what if we lived in Ikebukuro like him and Zero had such powers. Then he would pick up the teacher's desk now and throw it at Kenji. And we would all be grey people on the background... Ehh... My mind...

"Believe what you want to believe Kenji-kun, but I know the truth." Zero didn't get angry with him at all, he didn't even glare yet. It is starting to become a bit scary. Zero looks away from Kenji.
"Anyway I was just curious... how do you guys imagine Sorajima?"

Is that the question we're going to discuss the whole time until Yagari-sensei is back? It'll become boring if we are going to let everyone tell their story one by one. Wait… "Hey Zero-kun! Maybe we can draw about that!" I say.

Zero's POV

That's what I was waiting for. "That's a good idea, Shindou-chan." I say and pick up the papers.
"I will only draw if you draw too, Kiryuu!" I look up and see it was that Kenji guy again. He's too childish for words, but he'll make a fuss if I don't agree.

"Alright Kenji-kun, I'll draw too..." Tch, childish idiot. It's almost like I'm his babysitter. Kenji's eyes narrow and a little mean smile appeared upon his face.
"...On the blackboard, Kiryuu... then we can all see if you're really as good in arts as Yagari-sensei said you were!" I know he's trying to tick me off. But I can't let that happen, I need to stay calm.

"Sure, Kenji-kun.", I reply. The mean smile on his face suddenly disappeared. He didn't expect me to agree, I can read it all over his face. I wonder why he hates me so much. Not that I really care. Who would care about such a sick idiot?

After I gave everyone a paper it became very silent in the classroom. The only thing you could hear were the scribbling pens. I walked back to the blackboard and I picked a colored chalk.

Sorajima... It's so long ago I thought about home. Before we moved to the country side and that Hiou came to kill my parents and took Ichiru. Home... What did it look like? It's hard to remember. My family, my friends, everyone... Now I think of them I, I realise I miss them a lot. It actually feels lonely.

I let out a sigh and look at the blackboard, which is still empty. Sorajima, what really describes Sorajima? My best memories of Sorajima maybe, I think I'll draw that...

After ten minutes I was done. I closed the blackboard and I sat on the chair until the last bit of scribbling had stopped. The class was silently waiting to see my drawing while I collected all the creations they made. Unbelievable they actually took it serious... People drew shopping malls, big houses and wealthy people. As if Sorajima is a paradise for rich people.

I put all the papers on Yagari-sensei's desk and I look at the students again. And they look at me. Great now I need to talk again... I actually feel nervous now, although I used to stand before larger crowds than this. I shouldn't think about that, just stay calm.

"I took a quick look at all the drawings you guys made. But none of them looked like 'Jima' at all."

The cross students looked a bit confused. They really drew it in the way of that Aran-bastard's series. He ruins our culture. Wait, our culture? I'm the only Sorajiman here… Great, now I feel like that Sméagol/ Gollum-thing with a split personality. Oh 'My precious Sorajiman culture'.

"You see, in Sorajima there are no super big malls in fact Sorajima is wood for 70%. There is one gigantic city near the harbour that takes up 20% of Sorajima. The rest are little villages and roads and tourist spots or other stuff. There are big bazars and a lot of markets though."

"Yeah, yeah Zero. Just show us what you drew on the blackboard." Someone says and I let out a sigh. I knew it was kenji-kun and I also knew that if I look at him now I would snap. So I just turn around and open the blackboard.

"Huh? A playground?" Shindou says. "Why a playground Zero?"
"I didn't really know what I to draw to show you what Sorajima really looked like, so I drew the place with my best memories of it." I explain.

"And what is the story behind it, if I may ask?" Kageyama-kun the president asks.
"I didn't get home-schooling my whole life. The first time I went to school I was a 6-year-old boy who had just moved from a small village to the big city. My brother was too ill to go to school, so I was all alone. I didn't feel like making friends either, until my mom asked me to make friends one day and exactly on that day some boys approached me."

"And so you became friends with them?" Kageyama-kun asks guessingly. I shake my head.
"No not at all, they pushed me on the ground, kicked me and started calling me names. I had almost sworn to myself to never try to make friends again."
"Then how can that be your best memory?!"
"Well, because someone stopped the boys. It was a guy from my class. He helped me up and we became friends."

The bell rings and our English teacher comes in. "Hell-ah…" He stares into the classroom. "Zero… what are you doing there?"
"Getting lost on the path of life." Just seriously can't you see?
The teacher doesn't notice what I just said and keeps asking his questions; "Wasn't Yagari-san supposed to be here?"
"Ah yes, now you say it. He is still in that 'urgent meeting' of his." I say and walk to the door.
"Where are you going Zero?" The teacher asks me.
"I'm gonna look for Yagari-sensei. I'll be back."

With that I just left the classroom. I wanna know what those two are up to and why the planned to put me in charge of the class. I run to the chairman's office and open the door. Well… almost break the door.

"Indeed it'll cost a lo- Zero!" The chairman shockingly looks up from the laptop screen.
"Zero what are you doing here?" Yagari-sensei stands up from his chair next to the chairman's.

What'll cost a lot? And a laptop? The chairman never had one. I can hear voices coming from that thing too. Yagari-sensei walks over to me to send me out, but I manage to evade him, maybe a bit to dramatically.
"What are YOU guys doing here anyway?"

I turn the laptop towards me and I see people around a table. Some of them look like business people and some like high school students. Are these people Yakuza? Well I better ask then assume.

"What is this about?" I ask them quickly.
"If you want to know, then let me explain you all about it." A blonde guy stands up from his chair with a sly egoistic smile. Oh, a rich bastard. And what is that with those pointy teeth of his? He looks like a vampire.
"This is about a unique excursion. Something that's never done before…"
"And what might that exactly be? And what'll cost a lot about it?" I ask him.

Seriously I don't care about the details but he looks at the webcam like I just interrupted the speech of his life. Somehow I can already say that I don't like that guy.
"Ah well if you really want to know, we are planning an excursion for your Cross Academy, their Seika High and our Miyabigaoka to the island where I was born; Sorajima."

"…I'm gonna put you on a bigger screen." I say and take the laptop.
"A bigger screen? What are you talking about Zero?" Yagari-sensei asks me.
"Something I learned from a Sorajiman hero. You know what I mean."

I run back to the classroom with the laptop and open the door.
"Ah Zero-kun what took you so long? We- huh? What is that in your hand?"
"A laptop sensei. Move aside please." I say and walk past him.
"A lap-what? Zero don't say such vulgar words. What are you doing with that thing anyway?"
"Just let me do my work sensei. And since when is laptop a vulgar word?"

I put the laptop on the desk and close the sides of the blackboard and push it forward to the wall.
"What the hell are you doing Zero?!" I hear someone say. "You can't push it in the wall."
I can. It takes some power and time otherwise everyone who would bump into it would have known. I hear the black board click and walked to the left side. Now I also give the wall a push.
"Oh great now he's pushing the wall too!"

The wall turns around and the control panel appears on its other side. I type some security codes and the whiteboard comes out of and opening in the ceiling. All I hear now are gasps and the hasty footsteps of some people who enter the classroom.

"Z-Zero?!" I hear the chairman say. "What is that?"
"On this you can see the people in the meeting better." Yagari-sensei explains to the chairman while I connect the laptop the board. The people of the meeting become visible on the screen.

"Ooooh! Zero-rin that is genius~! But I don't remember buying such a thing…"
"That is because you didn't you stupid old man! I made it!" I say, ok, yell at chairman.

"So Kiryuu since when is your name Zero-rin anyways?" The cocky blonde asks me tauntingly.
How does he know my full name anyway? Wait… He said Sorajima. Born in Sorajima. Excursion… Sorajima! He just said he's born in Sorajima?! Wait I know him… Three schools to Sorajima… aargh I'm mixin' things up! But that smirk on his face… I definitely know him!

"Igarashi-kun wipe that annoying smirk off your face you friggin' idiot! You have no right to smirk anyway. I mean you are a Sorajiman citizen and you still make the others pay more than necessary with you around."
"Is there a privilege for natives then?" the headmaster of Miyabigaoka asks me.
"A kind of, yeah. But none of you have to worry about money anymore. I will handle the costs."
"A-are you sure about that kid?" I assume, the headmaster of Seika High asks me.
"I have my connections. Leave it to me."

"But we can't let you pay for everything! It's not fair!" A girl with long dark hair said.
"Don't worry, it won't cost me a thing either. What is your name?"

I don't know why but I feel like asking the question.
"Her name is Ayuzawa Misaki, your sister-in-law." Tora says before Misaki could even open her mouth.
"Sister-in-law?" I ask. What the hell is he saying? I don't have a brother other than Ichiru of course.
"Your best friend from our time in Sorajima Zero, Takumi. She is his girlfriend."

I could almost literally hear a key opening a lock. A lock I had put on my happiest memories so I wouldn't miss those days and be able to carry on. Takumi Usui.

"Heh. So he managed to get a girlfriend after all even though he's the biggest idiot in the worlds."
"B-but wait are you and Usui related?" Misaki asks me.
"Ah this must be confusing for you…" I say. "In Sorajima friends are like siblings, so their girlfriend or boyfriend are seen as relatives too."
"Oh."

Misaki looks timid and shy. Not really Takumi's type of girl. Or maybe it because she doesn't know me. She isn't familiar with all this of course. It does make me wonder if Usu even told her who he really is. And why isn't he in the meeting? He knows 'jima better than Tora ever would. Or did Tora keep us out on purpose? He has always been sly…

"Tora…" I say. My voice sounds deeper and more dangerous than I intended to make it. But it had a good effect on that sly smile of his, which totally vanished. Like he knew the question I was going to ask next.

"…where is Usui?"
