Chapter 62: Help
Mike followed Piper quickly out the door and through the streets. She seemed to be walking with a purpose, but Mike didn't really know what she was doing or what her idea was. She didn't walk very far; as soon as she saw a local burned out grocery store, she turned inside it. He wasn't really sure it was very safe, but didn't say anything. He just kept following. She found an aisle full of herbs and a few candles and asked Mike to go find either a lighter or matches and meet her outside. When he did, the side of the store crumbled behind them. They'd made it out just in time.
Piper took the matches from him and had already formed a circle with the candles. She instructed him to stand inside the circle with her after he lit the candles for her. She had found a bowl and was putting a few herbs in there carefully and when the candles were all light she finally looked at him and smiled.
"Are you ready?" she asked.
"I don't even know what we're doing," Mike said. "But I'm more than ready to do whatever it takes to help Micky."
"We're just going to do a displacement spell," Piper said. "Go to someone I know can help."
"Why don't we just do this with Micky and get him to a hospital?" Mike asked.
"Because Micky's too weak to do it," Piper said. "He wouldn't survive the trip."
"But we can get back here?" Mike asked.
"Yes, we just have to do this again," Piper answered. "Just hold my hands and don't let go until I tell you to."
"Ok," Mike answered and grabbed her hands around the bowl. She let go long enough to drop a lit match into the bowl and then gripped Mike's hand again saying a spell quickly but firmly. Mike felt squeezed; as though someone were trying to force his body through a very small space. The feeling only lasted a second. When he looked around, he was in what appeared to be on the outskirts of a medical tent set up near a battle.
"Follow me," Piper said and darted towards the main tent.
"Where are we going?" Mike asked.
"Ssh!" Piper said ducking behind a bush nearby and waited.
"What are we doing?" Mike whispered ducking behind the bush with her.
"Waiting for someone I know," Piper said.
"Someone you know?" Mike asked. "You know someone who fought in World War 2?"
"Sorta," Piper answered. "He died in combat and became an angel. He doesn't know me yet or anything about magic, but if anyone can save Micky, it's him."
"So if he doesn't know anything about magic, how are we going to get him to help us?" Mike asked. "We really don't even appear to be in Europe anymore."
"We're not," Piper said. "We're in Guadalcanal. I checked the date on the newspapers in that grocery store. He was stationed here. He died here."
"So how are we going to get back to Europe?" Mike asked. "To Micky? Without arousing his suspicions?"
"I uh…don't exactly know yet," Piper admitted. "I'm hoping he's a little open-minded."
"Isn't it also changing history if we take him away from theatre here?" Mike asked. "What if he's supposed to do something and we take him away?"
"Well, we kinda proved on the Titanic that whatever we do, we've already done," Piper answered. "Besides that, I don't really care. He's the only person I know for sure that can save Micky. I don't know where there are any open hospitals and I don't know any other doctors. This is all we've got."
"Ok," Mike said. "Fair enough. How do you know him?"
"He's sorta like a guardian angel," Piper said. "Like the one that healed us before. He watches over good witches when he dies. His wife and I actually have the same name. He was my guardian for a while, but when he retired to marry his wife, a witch he fell in love with, they gave me a new one."
"Oh," Mike said.
"That's him!" she exclaimed pointing at a man walking slowly out of the medical tent. He took his helmet off to reveal short dirty blonde hair and he wiped the sweat off his brow with a handkerchief. When he passed by the bush, Piper jumped out and grabbed him, quickly shoving him back behind the bushes so all three of them were hiding.
"What the!" the man said shocked and trying to get up, but Piper pushed him back down. "Who are you? What's going on? Let me go!"
"I'm really sorry," Piper started. "I know this is really weird, but I need your help. I know who you are. Leo Wyatt; the best doctor I know from the future. My name is Piper. Don't ask questions. There really isn't time for that, but I need to take you back with me and my friend Mike to save a man who has some severe internal bleeding."
"Are you insane?" the man named Leo asked.
"No, but you may think we are," Piper explained. "Look, he needs help fast. The thing you should be most concerned with is a man is going to die without your help. I know you and you'll never let that happen, no matter the circumstances. All I can tell you is that one day soon you'll come to understand what all this means."
"What all what means?" he asked. "Time travel?"
"Magic," Piper answered. "Good magic. Magic that saves lives. And this is your first of many chances to be a part of it. Please, just come with us. Help him." Leo seemed to hesitate a moment, then nodded.
"Let me get my bag," Leo said and started to get up.
"Don't worry about that," Piper smiled and helped him back up. She waved her hand toward the tent and a little medical bag came floating out of it towards them. Leo's eyes widened as he reached out for it. "Remember. Good magic." Piper led them back toward the clearing they'd first appeared here in and Mike noticed that there was a circle in the dirt and she pulled all of them into it, said another spell, and they disappeared again. In the blink of an eye, Mike felt squeezed again and they ended up outside the supermarket again.
"Are we in Germany?" Leo asked after stumbling and looking around.
"I have no idea," Piper said as another bomber plane flew overhead. "We just appeared here ourselves. Is that where you think this is?"
"Well, assuming that those are American and British bomber planes, I think it's somewhere in enemy territory," Leo said. "How did we get here?"
"I told you," Piper said. "Magic. Now, please hurry; we need to get to Micky." Without another word, Piper turned and ran back toward the house where they left Micky and the others. Mike followed with Leo behind them. Mike was surprised that Leo was going along so easily, but didn't question it. If Piper said he was the one person who could help Micky, then he was just glad that this man would. When they got back to the house, Piper knocked on the front door and yelled through it.
"Davy, it's us!" she exclaimed. "Open up!" A second later, the door opened and they walked in.
"I'm not sure it's a good idea to be staying here," Leo said walking in and looking at the state of the house.
"It's the only one that's not on fire or completely falling apart," Piper said. "It's the best we've got. Like I said, we have no idea where we are. Once we can move again, we'll move somewhere safer. In the meantime, this is Micky."
"What happened?" Leo asked walking over to Micky still lying on the couch. Mike's stomach dropped when he saw Micky. He had paled a lot more and it looked like he'd coughed up even more blood since they left. Micky really didn't look good.
"He got hit with falling debris," Piper answered neglecting to say what the debris was from. Mike looked around and saw Davy nervously fretting about. He had grabbed a wet cloth to clean blood from Micky's mouth and it was only when Davy looked nervously at Peter that he realized Peter was passed out in a chair.
"Peter passed out a few minutes ago," Davy said as Mike walked over to him. "I tried to wake him up, but it didn't help."
"What happened to Peter?" Leo asked.
"He got hit in the head," Piper answered. "My guess is it's just a concussion."
"Ok," Leo said. He looked a little different; as though seeing two patients in desperate need of his help erased all his question of magic and transportation. Leo motioned at Micky before dishing out orders. "Move him to a bed. I'm going to need to cut him open."
"Cut him open?" Davy asked a little terrified at the thought.
"I have to get in and stop the bleeding as well as drain the blood out," Leo said.
"Trust him, Davy," Piper said. "Just do what he says." Mike placed a hand on Davy's shoulder. He felt as scared as Davy, but had known that Micky might have to undergo something like that to save him. With a gentle squeeze of his friend's shoulder, he tried to reassure Davy that everything would be ok. Davy nodded and they moved to carry Micky into a nearby bedroom while Leo moved to look at Peter.
Inside the room, the bed was a little askew, so while Mike held onto Micky, Davy quickly set the bed right and moved the covers so Micky could rest on top of the sheet. Mike carefully set Micky on the bed, trying to keep him from feeling too much pain, but it seemed every small bit of movement hurt; Micky groaned in pain as Mike lay him down on the bed.
"I'm sorry, Mick," Mike said softly brushing the hair off his forehead.
"It's ok," Micky groaned.
"We got help," Mike said. "You're gonna be ok. He's gonna help you."
"I heard," Micky said. "Gotta cut me open."
"Yeah," Mike smiled. "But you're gonna be fine."
"Your friend Peter has a bad concussion," Leo said walking into the room. "I gave him a little something to help reduce the swelling. He needs to mostly just rest and he'll be fine. Micky, here, might be a different story."
"What?" Davy asked.
"He just means Micky needs more than rest," Mike answered Davy and then turned to Leo. "Is there any way we can help you?"
"Actually, yes," Leo said. "I can't do this alone. I normally have other medics and nurses and stuff helping me. But seeing as how I'm alone…"
"Whatever we need to do help," Mike said.
"Towels," Leo said, "I need as many towels as you can get and a bucket of some sort."
"Right," Davy said darting off to go get them nearly knocking over Piper as she walked in.
"What do you need from me?" Piper asked.
"Sit with him," Leo instructed. "I'm going to give him something to dull the pain, but it won't take all the pain away. Sit with him. You, uh…I forgot your name."
"Mike," Mike said.
"Mike, I need you to do what I do when I say it," Leo said.
"Absolutely," Mike said. Leo reached into his bag and pulled out a scalpel and some gloves.
"Take off his shirt and pants," Leo said. Mike nodded and carefully he and Piper took off his clothes while Leo prepared himself to cut Micky. Mike almost didn't want to have to stay and watch, but he knew that Leo needed help and if he didn't, Micky would die. Davy came back in after a moment with an arm full of towels and a trash can. Mike knew that Davy wouldn't be able to take seeing Micky being operated on, so he took the towels from Micky and set the trash can next to the bed.
"Davy, go keep watch over Peter," Mike said.
"You don't need me?" Davy asked.
"Peter needs you," Mike said. Leo seemed to understand what Mike was trying to do and nodded that they'd be fine. When Leo first made the incision into Micky's stomach, Mike almost lost it, but he had to keep it together. Leo told him to make sure the area stays clean and dry so that Leo can see what he was doing. It took nearly an hour, but Leo found where the bleeding was and finally got it to stop. Mike cleaned up as Leo instructed and helped wrap Micky's stomach before covering Micky with the sheets on the bed. He'd been nearly out through most of it, which made Mike happy. He hoped Micky hadn't really felt much, if anything.
"He's gonna be ok?" Mike asked as Piper, Leo and Mike walked out of the room. Peter had woken up and was looking at them, although looking slightly woozy.
"He'll be fine," Leo said. "I stopped the bleeding. He needs to have that bandage changed every 4 hours in the next day and ever 8 after that. Check the stitches to make sure they aren't tearing. And he shouldn't leave that bed for a thing. No food or drink until the morning. And then just water and soft foods. It'll probably take a week before he can even move around again and when he does, it needs to be easy. Take him to see a doctor soon. He needs those stitches taken out."
"Thank you, Leo," Piper smiled at him.
"I still don't know what's going on, but at least your friends will be fine," Leo said. "Are you gonna be able to get me back?"
"Absolutely," Piper smiled. "And like I said, one day soon you'll understand all of this. I promise."
