I expected this chapter to be a lot fewer words than the others. However, I guess I've been writing like a fiend, and it's wonderful.
I'm also going to top trying to predict when the next chapter will be out. I'm terrible at estimating how long it will take me to write.
"Are you going to be okay?" I asked Toothiana, she was crying while sitting on the ground. "Sorry… and thanks." I left her there; there was nothing I could do. She would stop crying sometime, return the canisters, and then find a way to continue on.
It took me a moment to figure out where the water tunnel was. I had to throw rocks into the pool to figure out where the satisfying 'plop' of water started. I swam the same as before, almost running out of breath again. I emerged from the water to still see the sun. My sense of time vanished as soon as I saw the memories; I hoped it was still the same day.
"MiM? You there?" I called, flying away from the mountain where Punjam Hy Loo resided.
"Yes, I've been watching what you've been doing. I lost track when you flew around the mountain, where did you go?"
"I can't answer that, you should know. But you couldn't see what's around there?" I asked; a lack of answer was all that I needed. "That is some serious magic at work. Any idea where Jack may be?"
"I saw him flying to Antarctica, you should try checking there. Something with snow and ice covered my view." He advised.
"How long was I out of service?"
"A day, a little less, actually."
"Thanks MiM, we'll have to catch up after this." I said, veering to the southwest. There was an emergency in Africa that if I didn't get too quickly, both sides of a couple would never find love. I arrived late, but I still was able to work a little magic. The man did get her number, so I just did a little enchantment on the paper so that he gets more and more enamored with her every time he looks at it. It was very simple, and a bit ingenious if I say so myself.
I flew off to the bottom of the world, getting ready for anything Jack would have for me. The sooner he went into that ice armor, the sooner I'd be toast. But I'd give it my all; there was no other way around it. I flew fast to the edge of the ice on the northern side of the continent.* As soon as I saw ice, I drew my bow, making sure to be able to pull and arrow at a moment's notice.
Even though I've flown down here hundreds of times, I still find the snow beautiful. Every reflection of the sun and every moment the ice peeks out from beneath the snow. It took a bit of searching before I found some awkwardly formed ice. I had gone over the northern area of the land until I finally saw an awkward ice formation. It was rising from what looked like should have been a valley and kept until it covered a good portion of the southern shelf.
I estimated where the center of the ice was and shot. I peppered the surface of the ice in a matter of seconds and with one last shot to the center, most of the ice shell shattered. The part that didn't appeared to be frozen completely solid. Other portions had random ice sculptures and other angry-looking things that I could only guess were 'art.' He must have been biding his time and planning while seething away. Sure enough, I could make out a few hearts in his designs and every single one was appeared to be in the process of being destroyed.
It wasn't long before Jack found me, flying above his creations looking for him. He flung some ice at me, as expected, and he missed out of sheer luck. I spun around on the spot to see Jack standing on top of the ice, readying another attack.
"I'm not going to fight you." I called.
His answer was some more ice, but I was easily able to dodge them. I had to resist the urge to egg him on, I needed him to talk and if I fought back there would be no way to stop Jack from fighting.
"Jack, remember how happy you were with Jamie. Remember how much fun you had with… your sister!" I couldn't break the news this early, he'd never believe it.
He was flinging spears, everything he could. I was surprised that he could manifest this much ice in this short amount of time, he must have been really practicing in case of Pitch's return. I was blocking with my bow and dodging, nothing offensive. Was getting ready to throw something big, I could tell that.
"Jack, I won't fight you." I reiterated, "But I won't stand for this. You have had a wonderful life before you were a spirit and you have had a hell of a time since then!" I waited until the last moment to dodge the oversized ice-torpedo that he shot at me. A swift turn to the right and my bow came crashing down on it, smashing it into little fragments that rained down beneath my lofty height. It was really pretty, but it was definitely a mistake.
Then there was pain on my right said, Jack had flown up and hit me with his staff. It was a rookie mistake, taking my eyes off of the person who wants to do me harm.
"Not so good when someone gets close, eh?" He chided, punching and swinging his staff my way.
"Not really, but I can still dodge and block with the rest of them." I said, doing just that. We sparred like this for a long time; there was no way to really measure time as during this time of the year, it was a transitional stage of night and day, so it was more of a perpetual dawn.
"Stop playing around and fight!" He screamed, taking a moment to cover his body in the glimmering ice like he did before.
"I'm not going to fight!" I yelled back, and took off towards the south. Jamie was on my heels in a moment, throwing ice and snow in my direction at every flap of my wings. I had to swerve around and take a roundabout way to where I was headed, a place I like to visit every time I can when in the area. It took about four minutes, which was way longer than a straight flight, but I made it untouched.
It was always a beautifully stunning, blue ice on the lake. I never completely understood why this was such a pristine blue, but I never bothered to delve too much into science. He came up fast as I took the moment to look at the lake.
"This is my favorite place in Antarctica you know, you should really look at the ice." I smiled as I realized who I was talking to, dodging underneath the icy spirit.
"I've seen the ice, I've been here before. But what I don't' get is you." He took a small break from attacking me to try to get me angry. "You confess you know all about love-"
"Yeah, I've heard this all before." I dismissed his argument, not wanting to deal with it again.
"Well, at least I know that you have something in there. My heart is beating, what about your namesake? I bet it's frozen." I chuckled at the irony of Jack's statement; the master of ice was the one with the beating heart. I narrowly dodged an ice spear as it flew past my body.
"I'm tired of playing cat and mouse, let's talk." I called, making sure to not take my eyes off of him.
"We wouldn't have to talk if you would just die already." He was throwing spear after spear, forcing me lower and lower to the ground. He was getting me in a position that I didn't want to be in, trapped without flight. I was still fifty feet above the ground when I suddenly felt it, the cold locked around my ankle. Jack had brought a pillar of shimmering blue ice up from the lake.
"Now you can't run." He smiled sadistically, throwing punches into my body at the same time he continued the pillar's freezing of my body.
"And I never was running, just trying to," His kick in the ribs broke my sentence, "to get you to talk!" With my spitting out my last words he proceeded to break my leg, which froze immediately after, and my arm. I screamed in pain, but continued to not fight. "Jack. Please… Listen." I asked, voluntarily dropping my bow.
He didn't have a response besides violence. He punched me repeatedly in the gut. One. Two. Three times, each hurt more than the last. He used his staff to hit me multiple times, and each place that he hit froze over and became weighted. The punches and freezing didn't stop, when up to my arms were frozen; he started hitting my face, but not looking completely at me. Eventually I was almost completely encased in ice. My head was the only they left out of the ice.
"Do you have anything left to say for yourself?" He asked. I was surprised he didn't kill me without asking for my last words.
"Come closer" I whispered, soft enough so that Jack could barely hear it. I coughed and tasted the blood on my tongue, it was coppery and wasn't pleasant. I coughed again, this time turning my head and trying to get most of the blood out. I even spat to try to get it all out. There was something I had to do before I died.
"What is it? What are your last-"He couldn't finish the sentence as I planted my lips firmly on his. After a moment of confusion, visions started coming over the both of us. The ice that held me and encased his body shattered and I moved to deepen the kiss and wrap both arms around him.
The first thing we saw was my most recent memories, always thinking about Jack and his problems, always trying to find a way to help. We saw him as a young boy, just as I saw in his memories with Toothiana. There he went sledding and climbed trees, all while having the most fun he could ever have. Then it moved to his sister, or so he thought, saw them playing, saw his sacrifice. Soon the vision was that of other memories, memories that were sad and happy. Jack saw his family, starving. Saw himself cheat for his younger brother, and saw his father come home with copious amounts of food. His father died soon after, but then people moved into town, including his eventual wife. We saw them play and grow up together. Then she was there, clutching his hand so tightly. Her screams filled the cabin, but the midwife was telling her to keep pushing. A few moments later, the baby arrived and it was clear that Jack was overjoyed. It went to memories of the girl growing up, always idolizing her father and wanting to have just as much fun as he did. The memories of him with Jamie washed over him, he saw him and Jamie playing, having fun. Saw them just as they were. And he fell again. The fourth time for both of us.
Eventually the images stopped for me and I broke the kiss that I started with Jack and immediately moved closer to him.
"I'm sorry. I'm so very sorry this happened to you." I said, tears streaming from my eyes while looking into his. I embraced the spirit with all my now-weak body could. And we stayed there, floating above a pristine blue lake while I held him and cried.
*Using the famous Wikipedia as a source (ironically I've had college professors do the same and then NOT allow us to use it; Hooray double standards!), the maps there clearly are oriented in one way that's the way I'm using them for directional issues.
This was the goal when I first started writing and I finally got to it! Originally it was going to be a little less classy of a story, but then I figured that if I really wanted to do that, I could start another. But I'm glad I got to this point and that everyone who has read it has gotten there too!
