Chapter 9
Decision
As alarm clock started its annoying tune, one red-head girl leaped from her bed and ran straight to the bathroom. She was full of excitement. Today's evening is going to be a turning point in her relationship with a certain blond best friend. The day was planned, dress was picked, and appointment in beauty salon was booked. But still, there was one particular thing she didn't do yet, she forgot to ask him out.
"Morning Mom!" she said, entering the kitchen, wearing a bathrobe and drying her hair with small bath towel.
"Good morning sweetie." Ann smiled and put three bowls of cereal on the table.
"Mom, is it alright if i'll be a little late this evening?" she asked innocently.
"It depends on what are you going to there."
"Nothing bad. It will be a Kim-Ron Friday night."
"Ow, it's ok then. It's been a while since the last one."
"Well, this is going to be special."
"Please don't say special like that near your father around, he might misunderstand and launch poor Ron into black hole, you know."
"I…not…" Kim's face became red. "I'm not talking about that special, i just…"
"I know Kimmie." Ann smiled, looking at her flustered daughter. "Does Ron know about this special evening?"
"Uh,no. I haven't asked him yet."
Ann sighed. Those two grew up before her eyes. They were always together, never apart. She saw how her little girl changed from a shy wallflower into a determinate young teenager, under an influence of a socially awkward, but undeniably kind and energetic boy. And though Kim showed some shallow taste in guys in the past, Ann always knew that one day her eyes would open wide enough to see a great and loyal guy beside her.
"Don't delay it any longer, Ron isn't kind of guy who can understand subtleness." Ann shook her head.
"I know. I'll ask him as soon as he'll be here."
A doorbell chime rang across the house.
"I'll, open the door." Kim leaped from her chair, forgetting about half-eaten cereal, and ran toward the front door.
She opened it with a huge smile on her face. However at the porch stood somebody she didn't expect to see.
"Good morning!" Shena waved lightly.
"Morning…" Kim looked confused.
"Wow, not really a reaction i thought i'd get."
"Uh, sorry, i'm just a bit surprised. Did something happen? You usually are waiting for us at home."
"Nah, i just woke up early and decided to get you guys first for a change. Is it bad?"
"No, of course not." Kim smiled to her slightly. "Come on in. Ron will be here soon too."
"OK."
"I need to dress myself, wait for me at the kitchen."
As Kim went upstairs, Shena followed a smell of the cereal in milk to the kitchen.
"Hello!" she said politely toward standing near sink woman.
"Oh, good morning Shena. It's nice to see you again." Ann smiled happily.
Shena sat at the table, putting her bag on the chair nearby,
"Cereal?" Ann asked her.
"No thank you, i ate already"
"This is good. Is it hard to live alone?"
"Uhm…"
"Sorry if i made you feel uncomfortable." Ann looked at her apologetically. "It's just, teens living alone, without parents or supervision. It makes me worried about your health, especially since you didn't feel well last month…"
"Wait… how did you know about it?"
"Kim told me."
"Oh for a love of…" Shena sighed. "What did she said?"
"Well, Kim called me that afternoon and told me that you didn't feel good and she and Ron are going to check you up after school, but after that she told me that you felt better."
"Is this all she said?"
"Yes." Ann raised a brow. "Is there something else?"
"It's erm, well…"
"Good morning Possible Clan!" a cheery blond boy entered the kitchen. "And Shena?"
'Phew, that was close, thank you Ron!' Shena thought.
"Ron?" Kim, fully dressed, came downstairs with a bag in her hands and smiled widely. "Good morning!"
"Yeah yeah, good morning and all." Shena quickly stood from the sit and pushed both of them toward the exit. "Come on, let's go or we'll be late. Goodbye Mrs. Possible."
"Bye kids!" Ann waved to them as they leaved the house.
"Ok, what was that?" Kim asked when as they were walking toward the school.
"Just avoiding an awkward moment." Shena shrugged her shoulders. "How much your parents know about my...situation?"
"The fact that you are living alone, you have superpowers, and that you skipped six years due to some villain." Kim answered. "Basically what i said to them at the first day we met. Nobody except team Possible knows about Who dragged you to this time and about your dream-memory thing. Even Monique doesn't know about it."
"Shouldn't we tell her about it?" Ron said.
"Well, she may not be an official member of a team Possible, but she is a close friend." Kim said.
"Yeah, i agree." Shena nodded. "I will tell her personally later."
Classes were passing in a flash for Kim. She didn't pay any attention for anything this day, accept her plans for this evening. It was quite simple: lure unknowing Ron into the date with tickets for "Rise and Fall of Fearless Ferret." documentary, and, while he is in good mood, confess her feelings for him. She almost giggled when an image of shocked Ron came into her head. Last class was over now, and she knew what to do. Kim slowly approached Ron, who was standing before his locker.
"Ron, i want to ask something." Kim said a little nervously.
"Finally!" Shena said, approaching them. "How long this day can be? I almost fell asleep at history…"
"Hey girlfriend, can i lend you for a second?" Monique jumped out from nowhere.
"Wha…"
"I hear Yes!"
Monique grabbed Shena's arm and dragged her away from other two.
'Thank you Monique.' Kim thought.
"Well, that was weird." Ron scratched his head. "Anyway, what were you going to ask me about KP?"
"You see, we didn't have a Kim-Ron friday night for quite a while, so…" she pulled out two tickets from a purse. "How about we go to the movies tonight, us the two of us."
"Is…is it?" Ron's eyes became wider. "IT IS! I thought all tickets were sold over!"
"Well, i ordered them beforehand."
"You the best, Kim!" Ron hugged her with a wide stupid smile on his face.
"I know." she said. "Pick me up at five, and don't be late!"
"Yes mam!" Ron stood straight and gave a salute.
Meanwhile in a girl bathroom one very confused and slightly irritated girl looked sternly at her awkwardly smiling friend.
"So?" Shena started. "What is this all about?"
"Well…" Monique tried to think something up, but couldn't. "Ok, i'm gonna tell you straight. I needed to relocate you for five minutes from Ron and Kim."
"Why?"
"Kim finally decided to make a move on Ron, and it would be awkward with you around."
"Oh!" realization hit her. "OH! So she is going to do it now?"
"No, Kim is inviting Ron on a movie night, she'll confess to him later."
"Sheez." Shena sighed. "Why so complicated? If i was on her place i would just said things straight!"
"Those two are dancing around since the day i met them, if they could say it straight they would do it a long time ago."
"Anyway, why didn't she warn me this morning to give some space to them today? I mean, Ron wasn't around at first."
"I have a thought, but you might not like it."
"Spill it!"
"She is totally jelly from a day one."
"I'm sorry what?"
"She is jealous, because all the attention Ron gave you."
Shena blinked couple times, processing the information and leaned to the wall.
"Come on, it's not what you think." Monique desperately tried to find right words. "I mean, where i only started to befriend Kim, Ron was jealous as hell, because he was afraid to lose his best friend to me."
"Yeah, i got it." Shena looked at the floor. "You know, for a moment i started to doubt that Kim is thinking of me as a friend."
"Don't even think about it, you ARE her, no, OUR friend. You are part of us now, and forever."
"Oh, scary." Shena said sarcastically and smiled. "Warn me next time about such things beforehand ok?"
"Ok." Monique sighed in relief.
"Let'go, i'll buy you a smoothie"
"What?" Monique was confused. "Why?"
"Let's just say, that i have some secrets to share, and it would be better for you to be calm and happy."
Several hours later Ron was standing at the Possible's porch. He was happy in anticipation of the movie. Door before him opened.
"Good evening Ronald." Mr. Possible looked sternly in his eyes.
"Good evening Mr. Dr.P." Ron felt uncomfortable for some reason.
"Kim will be in a minute." Ann smile to him. "Kimmie, Ron is here!"
"You know Ronald how to treat a lady right? Right?"
"Of course Mr. Dr.P, Why do you asking?"
"Just for a case. You also know what happens with ones who don't know how to treat a lady, right?"
"What happens sir?"
"They went deep in the space on a one-way shuttle."
"How deep exactly?"
"Black hole deep, Ronald."
"Stop scaring him Dad!"
Kim came downstairs in a short black dress. Her hair was professionally groomed, and her make-up was perfect. Ron was stunt from this sight for a moment, but quickly came into senses.
'So that's what it was all about.' Ron thought. 'Mr. Possible was afraid that creeps will be attracted to Kim today, and i must protect her from them, for they own good, or they won't come back to the Earth ever. Yeah, that's sounds right.'
"Don't worry Mr. Dr.P.! I got what you said you perfectly." Ron showed thumb up.
"Come on Ron, we'll be late for a movie." Kim said, and went outside.
A trip to the movie theatre was uneventful. Ron mostly talked about the show, and what he thinks will be in a movie, occasionally looking around for some reason. Kim felt a little frustrated. Though she liked an initial reaction she got from him, it looks like an effect wasn't as strong afterwards. Movie was quite interesting even for Kim, who wasn't a fan of the original show. Documentary was well done, showing all sets and props used in Fearless Ferret, many events that people working on said show attended, and interview from the crew and the cast. As movie was over Kim and Ron slowly walked through the streets of Middleton, discussing it. Hour later they were near Kim's yard.
"We back already?" Ron blinked in surprise.
"Uhm, Ron? I want to tell you something" Kim finally collected enough courage.
"What is it KP? You look kind of nervous." Ron was a bit worried.
"Just listen, ok?" she made a deep breathe. "I asked you out today, not to just see the movie, i want to tell you that…I like you Ron."
"Of course you are KP, we are best friends forever!" Ron smiled innocently.
"Not in that way. I mean, i Like-like you, more than best friend. Do you understand?"
As Kim predicted Ron was shocked, but something was wrong. His face expressed not only shock, but also sadness, confusion and something else she couldn't decipher.
"Kim." Ron said quietly, without looking at her eyes. "I'm sorry…"
Kim felt like her heart ripped itself apart.
"Why?" she asked.
"I can't." he answered. "I like somebody else, really like."
Kim barely held tears at her eyes.
"Do i know her?" she asked, slightly biting her lower lip. "Is it Shena?"
"No, no it isn't Shena." Ron was nervous, but managed ti keep his voice calm. "I met her at Smarty Mart."
"Is it true?"
"Kim you know me, i wouldn't lie to you."
Kim just nodded and hugged him slowly.
"Thank you Ron."
"I am your best friend after all." Ron tried to smile.
Kim quietly went to her house, with her head lowered. As soon as she closed the door, without looking back, Ron touched his shirt, it was slightly soaked where Kim's head was. He went home, straight toward his little sister's room. His mom was there, playing with Hana.
"Ow, Ron, you're back!" Mrs. Stoppable said, with slightly tired voice. "How was the movie?"
"Great!" he smiled widely. "Hey Mom, you don't look well, take a break, i'll look after Hana."
"Yeah, coffee break wouldn't harm."
Ron sat near Hana as his mother went out the room.
"Hey little one."
Hana quietly looked at his eyes for couple seconds and started to whimper.
"Oh no, is your teeth hurting again?"
Hana raised her small hands toward her brother. Ron raised her from the floor and hugged, moving side to side, trying to calm her down.
"It's ok. Pain will be over soon. Everything will be fine."
Hana stopped whimper. Ron put her back to the floor near her toys.
"See, it's better now!"
He smiled to her, and Hana started to whimper again.
"What is it? Teeth? Tummy?" Ron started to worry.
Hana looked at his face and stopped whimpering.
"Is it…" Ron started to understand. "Is it my smile?"
Hana looked blankly at him.
"But you usually like my smile!"
He tried to smile again but stopped as Hana started to whimper immediately.
"You don't like forced smile do you?"
She didn't answer.
"You barely a year old and already can understand difference between smiles, that's my little ninja sister!"
Ron sighed deeply.
"Sorry Hana, your brother isn't really cheery now. He just hurt his friend, and immediately after that lied to her. I could just accept her feelings, but it wasn't fair to her. So i hurt her. That's why i can't smile to you the way you like."
"Ron." Mrs. Stoppable stood near the door. "I don't feel well. Please make a dinner tonight. You can cook whatever you like. "
"Really? Thanks Mom! I'll go and buy some ingredients."
Ron drove away on his scooter toward the nearest grocery store a minute later. Mrs. Stoppable was proud of her son at the moment. He made a harsh choice, and he understood all weight of it, just like an adult man. She might not help him directly, Ron must go through this experience alone, she thought, but she sure knows how to cheer him up. And that she needs to clean up the fridge in order to fit mountain of different food.
