Chapter 19
Into the new future
"I hope it will work. Mom will kill me if i'll ruin another set of breakers."
There was a device on Wade's table, formed as a rather big bracelet, with lots of cords attached to it. He lost count of what attempted to make it work it was. He changed the battery to the new type, rewired and remodeled it, in hopes to make it work. His heart was beating fast, as he pushed the small in his hands. Light from the computer screens and lamps above disappeared, leaving boy sitting in darkness. Wade, feeling really down, was ready to accept another failure. However, a green light came from a small screen on the device.
"YES! IT'S WORKING! IT'S CHARGING! WOO-HOO!"
"Wade!" his mother entered his basement room with a flashlight in her hand. "I told you to stop playing with power!"
"It ok Mom! Breakers are fine!" Wade tried to reassure her. "Just give me twenty, no fifteen minutes!"
"Fine." woman sighed. "I'll go and buy some groceries then. And there better be light in house when i come back, mister!"
"Yes Mom!" Wade answered, as his eyes were focused on the device.
After about 20 minutes it was fully charged, and lights in the house were working again. Wade made a quick check of the device with computer. Surprisingly, data was good. His calculations were finally right. He reached towards the flying microwave, that he uses to transport stuff to the Team, but stopped midway.
"No, this is special." he said and dialed Team communicators with his computer.
"What the sitch Wade?" Kim answered.
"Hey Wade, what the sitch?" Shena asked.
"Hey! I have something to show to you all. Let's meet at Shena's place in 40, no 30 minutes. And bring Ron too."
"Thirty minutes, got it." Kim answered.
"Ok." Shena said as screen n her communicator faded away.
"Wade sounded really excited." Ron commented, while drinking his soda.
"Yeah." she threw remains of popcorn in the trashcan. "I wonder what it's all about."
"He probably came up with new awesome gizmo." Ron suggested. "Maybe a battle suit, or stun gun in eyeliner."
"Sounds cool." she smiled. "You know let's go to the spy movie next time, instead of romcom."
"Yeah, comedy was good, but romantic part tanked. It was kind of creepy."
"I agree. Buying a flower to the girl is romantic, but sending them at her home, at her work, AND the place where she buys her coffee, plus those cryptic messages inside the bouquets. Story would make more sense if it was about stalker-maniac serial killer."
"Chipmunk was awesome though." Ron pointed out.
"Oh yeah." she laughed. "That little rascal was hilarious. He basically saved this movie from totally sucking."
Shena really enjoyed these little dates. Movies, arcades, picnic in the park. She especially liked to use Ron's shoulder as her own personal pillow. She knew that he felt a bit awkward about it at first, but soon, it became natural for both of them, even relaxing. Her head was on his shoulder the whole time they watched this movie, with his arm around her waist. They tried to not show too much affection with Kim around, since they didn't want to make her feel uncomfortable. Their dates felt even more special because of that.
Kim was sitting at Shena's house porch, waiting for others to come. She came a bit early, waiting for a lovely couple to return from their date. She was bored, really bored. Nothing to do, nowhere to go, no one to talk. It's not like her friends forgot about her. Monique worked full shifts during the summer, trying to raise her college savings, and the only time to talk was during her lunch break, since at work she is constantly busy, and after it too tired to do anything but walk home. Ron and Shena usually spend their free time with Kim, but occasionally they were going on dates, leaving her hanging alone. It was that occasional day. Kim was really happy for those two. It's not that her feelings for Ron disappeared, they just adapted to situation and became more or less close to the best friend category again. She also was really close with Shena now. She was a really good friend and great addition to the team. Her skills made mission easier to handle, and Kim finally has a challenging sparring partner. Spending time with her out of missions was quite fun too. Mall trips, small talks about usual stuff and things she can't talk about with Ron for obvious reasons. She also helped planning a slumber party for Monique, to help her relax a bit, which will happen at that weekend.
"Hey KP!" Ron with his girlfriend appeared nearby.
"How long are you waiting here?" Shena asked, raising one brow.
"Not long, couple minutes at best." Kim stood from the porch.
Shena let her friends inside the house and asked Ron to get sodas for them from the fridge, while she and Kim comfortably ensconced themselves on sofa.
"Check this!" Shena grabbed her laptop from the coffee table and opened a web-page. "I ordered this yesterday for our slumber party."
"How many different kinds of flavors does this ice cream set have?" Kim's eyes turned into the circles. "Also the price is astronomical."
"I paid with my credit card. Only best for my girls." Shena said nonchalantly and clicked on another browser window. "Also, i ordered this."
"Motorbike? Do you even have a license?"
"Not yet, but i'm working on it."
"Working on what?" Ron came back with three cans of soda in his hands.
"To get a license to ride this beauty." Shena answered and showed him the picture on the laptop.
Doorbell ringed, announcing the visitor. Shena stood from the sofa and slowly opened her front door, thinking that it was weird for Wade's inventions to push the doorbell. Instead of a usual flying microwave, before her stood real, sweaty and out of breath, chubby boy, with a shoe box in his arms.
"H….hey!" he mouthed, breathing heavily.
"Hey." Shena said, while being utterly shocked, and led him inside. "Guys! Wade is here! In the flesh!"
"Hey man!" Ron smiled and passed him a soda can. "Good to see you in person again."
"Thanks." Wade put the box on coffee table and drank the whole can almost instantly. "Hah…that's better. I haven't run like this since i was five, i think."
"So i guess you two already met him live, since i'm the only one on a freak out vibe right now?" Shena asked.
"Yeah." Kim shrugged nonchalantly. "One time a group named Team Impossible spiked his system and made him so mad, that he personally came to deal with them."
"And trust me." Ron put his hand on Shena's shoulder. "I had a MAJOR freak out that day."
"Good to know it's not just me." she calmed down and looked at the boy. "So i guess, if you are here, it's something really important."
"Yes it is!" Wade said and opened the box, revealing bracelet-shaped device.
"This is…" Shena recognized it almost instantly. "It's hers… time travel machine."
"You fixed it?" Kim asked curiously.
"Not exactly." Wade crossed his hands. "You can't travel through time with it, however, you can manipulate the portal to bring a certain someone from there, and held her in our time for a short time."
"You mean we can bring the Other me here?" Shena asked. "How long is that short time?"
"18 minutes." He answered. "This is the best i could do. I took out everything excessive or unnecessary from schemata, that was there to emulate the technology of future, and made it more linear and simple. The hardest part was the charging the device, it eats a LOT of energy. It will take one-third of the charge to open the portal and get her out of there, and he same amount to put her back. Or she will cease to exist. Without portal or the device, there is nothing holding her physical body on this plane."
"It feels kinda wrong to bring her here, just to put her back less than half-hour later." Kim commented.
"It is, but..." Shena said quietly than usual. "I need to meet her. I have some question to ask."
"Also there is a big opportunity to ask her about the device, and how it was made." Wade said. "This, i hope, will give me some tips for creating a more reliable version of it."
"You' right." Kim said. "That's for better."
Shena slowly took device from the shoebox. She didn't catch a good look on original version before it blew itself up, so she couldn't say how much boy manage to recreate it visually, but for some reason she believed that it looks really close to it.
"How does it work?" she asked, still looking at the device.
"Red button will open the portal and draw the body from it to this room." Wade explained. "We must attach it to her as soon as possible, and after that press the blue button to make the device fix her in our time. I have no idea how long the portal will be active, so it must be done really quickly. After 18 minutes device will automatically open portal again."
"Got it. Give me a moment."
Shena carefully put the device back in a box and went out of the room. She was back seconds later with a pill and glass of water.
"What's that for?" Kim asked her.
"It's a head medicine. Bought it in case another head-cracking event." she took the pill, drinking it up with water. "Well, i'm ready."
Shena took the device, while Ron moved the coffee table to the wall. As she pushed the button a bright red and purple portal opened in the middle of the room, the same one they saw last time. Her head started to hurt, however she was able to bear it. A body, dressed in green and black catsuit flew closer and closer to them. When it crossed the portal window, it fell on the floor. Shena immediately put the device on person's right hand and pushed the green button. A click was heard and it's display showed a countdown, 18 minutes. Seconds later the portal closed. A small groan was heard from a person on the floor.
"What the hell." She growled ad raised her head to see a person who was crouching above her. "Oh hey. Never thought i'd see you again. Guess jumping back without the device didn't work well. Wait… why do i have chrono-manipulator on my wrist again, and why it looks different? Also, you changed you close, and hair is combed…"
Realization suddenly crawled into woman's head.
"How long it was since we saw each other again?" she asked.
"Almost four months." Shena said. "You were stuck in that portal the whole time."
"Well, that sucks." Shego stood from the floor and stretched.
As she did that, she looked around the room, noticing other people in it. Shego's heart skipped a bit as she saw blond hair teenager.
"Ron." she said softly.
"Y-yes mam?" Ron said nervously, two Shenas was quite a feast for his hormones.
"Hey, stop staring at my boyfriend!" Shena stood between two.
"Boyfriend?" Shego blinked in surprise. "Seriously? For real?"
"Yes!" Shena answered immediately. "Do you have a problem with that?"
"Calm your bottom." her older counterpart smirked. "Trust me, i have zero problems with that, just hella surprised, that's it."
"Ehm, i don't want to interrupt you, but we are on a time limit!" Wade cut into the conversation.
"Ah, Nerd Linger!" Shego raised her hand and pointed on the device. "Your work?"
"Nerd Linger?" Wade was confused for a second. "Ehm…yeah, mine. But it doesn't work like it should. No time traveling. But it managed to free you from the portal for now, though you must go back when times is out on timer."
"Time limit, back to the portal, got it." she sighed heavily. "Great. I can't even go back in time without fucking it up."
"Then maybe you should stop wasting your time, and answer some questions we have?" Shena snapped at her.
"How about this..." Shego casually sat on sofa. "I want you all to answer my questions first, and then, if i still have some time, i'll answer yours."
"What?" Shena shouted, her patience was getting shorter and shorter with every passing moment.
"Did i stutter or something?" her older self said. "Come on, you can either agree, and we'll have a civil conversation, or disagree and i'll just sit quietly and tell you nothing until time is up."
"You!" Shena inflamed her hands in fury.
"Shena wait." Kim ran to her. "Let's just follow her way, you'll just waste more time by fighting her."
"Yeah. Listened what Princess say." Shego smirked again.
"Princess?" Kim asked confusingly.
"Never mind." She rolled her eyes. "Ron, be a lamb, bring me something to drink, beer…wait, she doesn't drink yet…soda then."
"Ok." Ron instinctively went to the kitchen and brought her a can, feeling really awkward under Shena's stare.
"My thanks!" she opened it and made several gulps. "AH! That's so much better. I see you've met Possible's team while i was out."
"It's Team Possible." Shena corrected her. "And i'm a part of it."
"Seriously? I'm in princess's team?" Shego was amused. "How did it even happen?"
"Ron introduced me to his friends, i saw the team in action, i asked to join, they accepted." Shena explained. "Now next question please."
"Hmm…next question…let's see…" she made a pondering face. "Ron, how did you manage to get me as your girlfriend? Well, not Me, the younger me."
"Honestly." Ron petted his neck awkwardly. "I have no idea."
"Bwahaha." Shego laughed out loud, almost spilling soda from the can. "That's my Ron!"
"Not yours! Mine!" Shena cut in. "And to your information i love him because he is the most caring, funny, and loyal guy i ever met, and probably ever meet!"
"True." Shego shrugged her shoulder. "Is he a good kisser?"
"What?" Ron was red as tomato.
"Yes." Shena refused to lose.
"I see." Shego looked at poor blushing blond teen and back at her younger self. "I'm surprised you speak of that so frankly, in front of witnesses no less. I don't remember being so open with anyone until…never mind... Anyway, what happened with you during my absence?"
"A lot. And i might even thank you for that."
"Me?"
"Yes. Looking into your memories really opened my eyes on some things."
"Wait what?" Shego lost her cool for a moment, but quickly put herself together. "You saw, my memories you say?"
"Yes." Shena answered. "It happened several times, during a sleep and a loss of consciousness. Most of the things i forget as soon as i wake up, but the key parts are still in my head."
"How much did you saw?"
"I saw bits and pieces of your work as Drakken's sidekick, and how you quit." Shena scoffed. "That was pathetic i must say."
"Yeah yeah, not my proudest moments, i admit. What else?"
"I saw how Wade helped you to build the time machine. How you met Ron at mercenary place. How he crashed at your place, about his stunt with a handshake. And there also was parts about the tracking chip…"
"Stop right there!" Shego interrupted her and looked at Ron. "Tracking chip? You know about it?"
"Yes." he answered with smile.
"And you are still hanging around lil Kimmie?"
"What with all this names?" Kim said, feeling irritated from this attitude.
"Uhm, yeah." Ron said, a little awkwardly. "I mean, i was pretty mad at first, but we smoothed things out, and chip was removed from my shoulder. It's all good now."
"This is…" a widest victorious smile appeared in Shego's face. "This is awesome! It worked even better then i thought!"
"What worked?" Shena was about to lose her patience. "We asked your stupid question, answer ours now!"
"Chill out, there are still ten minutes left…ehm, nine. I still have one question" she looked at Wade. "Hey Nerd Linger, the future you said that without this thing on my wrist, or an open portal there is nothing to keep myself in the past. What exactly happen with me if i took off this thing?"
"Well, you will disappear, it's kind of self-explanatory." Wade said.
"Do i just disappear into nothing?" she asked.
"I…i don't really know. According to my theories you either will be erased from existence as a foreign object in our timeline, or will be dragged somewhere else. Like back to your timeline, or into the changed one, or the whole other plain of existence. There is no way to know for sure, i only can hypothesize."
"I see." she looked at the device. "Well, since you've all been good kids, and answered Miss Shego's questions, i think i can answer some of yours."
"Finally!" Shena groaned. "Answer me, why did you do all of this?"
"You mean the whole time traveling shebang?"
"Yes."
"You really wanna know?"
"Yes!"
"Fine then." Shego let out another sigh, leaned on the couch more and crossed her legs. "Since you know about the Mercenary business, including Ron living at my place, i guess you also know that we were partners."
"Yeah, i know. Does it somehow connect to your deed?"
"It does. And it also connected to Ron."
"Me?" Ron blinked in confusion.
"Not today's you, Ron from my time." she smirked towards the boy, and looked at Shena. "You know he became quite a skillful mercenary, under my supervision. Honestly, if i only knew the potential hidden in that boy earlier, i'd scoop him from Princess much earlier. Though he probably wouldn't go anywhere with me until their big break up. Anyway, over almost a year we manage to get pretty high on a merc's ranks, and eventually were allowed to take A and S class missions…"
Shego went quiet for several seconds, trying to keep her emotions under control.
"We decided that S-class would be too troublesome for us, and stayed on a lower level. After finishing another A class mission, i went to collect the reward from the office while Ron went home to prepare a dinner. At the office entrance couple mercenaries were waiting for me. They told me to stay on the A class tier, and never go for the S class. I told them to screw themselves, and that we will do anything we want."
Her hand started to shake a little.
"Next day i got message from main office, someone asked for our team specifically to take the work. S class. I was still pretty riled up, and took it without any additional checkup. It…it was…"
She went quiet again, Her face became even paler shade of green than usual.
"What?" Shena looked at her future counterpart. "Hey, are you alright?"
"I'm…fine…" she shook her head to collect her thoughts together. "It was a trap, set up by the mercs i met that day. When we sneaked into the place we found out that it was stuffed with explosives. It detonated as soon as we realized that it were there. I don't remember clearly what happened right after that, i was disoriented by explosion. All i remember is a faint blue light, and a sound of broken glass and then i passed out. When i regained consciences, i was outside the building, or what left of it, with Ron holding me in his hands. I wanted to kick him off from myself, but noticed that he was barely breathing. His back was full of shrapnel wounds and burns, and he was bleeding heavily. By the time medical help arrived, he was already…dead. Ron died in my hands."
It felt like it became colder in the room for everyone.
"I died." Ron mouthed without thinking. "Or will die…"
"Ron!" Kim hit his hand slightly, feeling bad for Shego, but at the same time, understanding the state of shock they are all in.
"What about that dirtbags?" Shena spoke through her teeth.
"I tore their throats off." Shego answered immediately.
"G…" Shena wanted to say 'Good', but couldn't.
"You never know what you are capable off." Shego said, seeing the state her younger self is at the moment. "Yes, i killed them, but it didn't make the situation better. It didn't change the fact that Ron died. He died because of me. Because my pride didn't let me to ignore the challenge, because i kept him around me. He protected me…he died for me…."
It was a limit for her. Tears were sliding down her cheeks.
"After all this i went off the radar. Kim was looking for me fiercely. I was on wanted list for murder, and she also blamed me for Ron's death. And she's not wrong in that. Even now i can't forgive myself. This feelings inside won't go so easily. However it isn't guilt i feel, it's regret."
"Regret?" Shena asked.
"Yes, regret. I really liked him you know. Not in the intimate way, but close to it. I always kept a certain distance. Close enough to hang out, but far enough to not fall for the guy. Always told myself that he is younger than me, that he can do so much more in life. But after he was gone…it just became another regret of mine. So many things i fucked up, for me, for others."
She glanced at the display quickly and wiped her tears.
"But it doesn't matter anymore. While i was on a run, i saw a news article, about boy-genius from Middleton and his breakout time-travel theory, with a potential of creating a real time-traveling. I'm talking about Wade the Nerd Linger of course. Initially i wanted to kidnap him and force him to create the device for me, but he was surprisingly cooperative. Probably, because he blamed himself for Ron's death as well."
"Tracking chip." Wade said quietly.
"Yep." Shego nodded. "Maybe Princes blamed herself too, couldn't ask her in between punches and screams. If it wasn't for her, that device would be ready much earlier. And once it was ready, i was able to execute my plan. First step: took 16 years old you and separate from the family."
"Why 16?" Shena asked.
"Because at 15 you probably would still go back to the Team Go, even if i separate you from them. And at seventeen, i would probably run off away from any hero stuff, and go solo act." Shego explained. "I needed you to be on your breaking point for the next step: giving you somebody as positive influence, Ron, to be exact. With him around i was sure you'll have all you need to feel like you belong."
"So you choose Ron because he was your friend?" Shena processed the information.
"This is only part of the reason." Shego answered her. "It's true that he made me feel things i thought i'd never feel again in my life, but i chose him to be near you mostly for a third step: Give Ron someone to rely on. I was making sure that if the shit will hit the fan, he would have someone to stop him from doing something stupid, like running off to the other town and join the mercenaries."
"It's all makes sense now." Shena mumbled. "That why you didn't use time traveling to save our parents, or at least me from the influence of the comet. Ron could suffer the similar fate he did in the future."
"Pretty much." Shego shrugged.
"You didn't have to do it!" Ron suddenly said. "I mean, i'm happy that i met Shena, really happy, but if you had a chance to save your parents why didn't you do that?"
"I reconciled their death long time ago, kiddo." she answered him. "And i like my powers, they are part of myself, both physically and spiritually."
"But…"
"Ron, it's ok." Shena stopped him with a weak smile. "I…i understand her."
A beeping sound suddenly came up from the device.
"Looks like there is no time left." Shego said calmly.
Portal appeared in the room again. Shego stood from the couch, but didn't go towards it. She took device off her hand and threw it to the portal.
"Wha-" Wade started to panic. "Why did you do that?"
"I'm not going back there." Shego announced.
"But you are going to disappear, if you won't go there!" Kim said.
"Maybe." Shego smirked. "And maybe i'll go somewhere, either way i am going to take my chances instead of being canned in some kind of wormhole."
"You sure?" Shena asked her.
"Yeah, you know me. By the way, I gave both you and Ron a whole new life, don't waste in in vain!"
As soon as portal disappeared, Shego's body vanished in air as well. The only things she left behind are a bunch of teenagers, which lives were changed upon her actions, and an empty can of soda.
-Four years later-
An alarm on a cellphone ringed loudly, waking two young people up.
"Ron..." Shena croaked, without lifting her head from the pillow. "The alarm…"
"Yeah…" blond young man reached his cellphone, without looking at it, ant turned the signal off. "That's better…"
"No, not better…" her head was still on the pillow. "We need to go…"
"Can't we just lay here and sleep?" he yawned widely.
"No…it's a wedding day." Shena finally managed to pull her body up and scratched her messy head. "We can't be late… I'm taking shower first."
"Maybe we could take it together?" Ron smiled coyly.
"No, i just told you that we can't be late, but i like this idea, hold it for next time."
She smirked at him and went to take a shower. Since it was a hotel room the cabin was rather small, and wasn't really comfortable.
"Should i order a breakfast?" she heard Ron through the sound of running water.
"Nah, there will be a banquet after all, let's leave some space for it."
As she finished cleaning herself up, she dried her hair and left the shower room.
"I'm done." she said, walking towards the bed in a bathrobe.
While Ron took a shower, Shena was applying her make up in front of a mirror that was hanged on the wall. She put on her favorite lipstick, and looked at her reflection. It reminded her of someone, it reminded her herself, her future self.
'I look exactly like Her.' Shena thought. 'It has been almost four years after all. I wonder what happened to her after she disappeared.'
A short glimpse appeared in her eyes, startling Shena a bit. She looked closely to her reflection.
"Must be my imagination." Shena said out loud and shook her head a bit.
"What's your imagination?" Ron asked, walking towards her in a bath towel around his waist.
"In a mirror. I just realized that i look like She now. And…what do you think happened to her?"
"I really have no idea." Ron shrugged and put his pants on. "But i hope that she is happy, she made us happy after all."
"Thanks for honesty." She giggled and went towards her bridesmaid dress. "You know, i still can't believe that it took Herald SO long to make a proposal to Pam."
"Well, she was constantly rolling around the world." Ron tucked white shirt into pants, and fastened black leather belt. "And he was saving the world on daily basis."
"Yeah, i guess it's good that they decided to slow down. Can you help me with a dress?"
Ron went to her, and zipped her dress at her back.
"You look marvelous." Ron smiled to her.
"Flatterer." Shena smirked at him and corrected his tie. "Now, take you tux jacket and let's go."
No matter how they met, those years they spend together were one of the brightest and happiest memories for them. And it all happened because one person, who was ready to sacrifice everything to give them a better future. Before leaving the room Shena looked at her reflection in a mirror once more.
'I don't know where you are or even if you still alive, but i want to say you one thing. Thank you…Shego.'
