Chapter One: Trial
"I'm tired of this rain It's awful!" Zelda scrunched her face, staring out of the dark window, with silk-smooth blonde hair cushioning her head. It rained - pouring without cease, just like the days before. She was dressed casually, not interested in leaving her quarters. Zelda had been enjoying the peaceful quiet after having her twentieth birthday just the day before. The room was not hers, but a simple private lounge. Two chairs sat paired at the window, one with a blanket. She slumped down into one, enjoying its comfort; her mind tired of the recent happenings. A maple table held a tall candle that dimly lit the room. A large scenic picture hung from the wall to the left and underneath sat a small bench. Off to the side rested a tall rustic bookshelf.
Slowly she rolled her crystal blue eyes to her scullery maid, who sat on the floor; with rag in hand, dusting the books and shelves. "Do you think maybe I should complain to the Zoras?"
Her maid, Tulma, turned to her with a smile, "Perhaps, if it stops this horrible constant downpour." She lowered her head, "Though…I believe the goddesses mean ill for us. All I can assume is that it is a warning of something ominous approaching." She glanced back to her chores and pushed the thick book into its proper place on the shelf.
"So I'm not the only one that senses it. I fear the worst." The princess muttered. Zelda stood and stretched, pushing her hands into her back. "I suppose I sat too long."
Tulma grunted as she stood. "I'm sure it's just our imagination, miss. Hyrule has been safe for over a hundred years after the evil wizard Ganon was defeated. Why don't we take a trip to the library? You promised you'd read me some of those stories of the great hero!"
Zelda slightly grinned and nodded her head. "I can always teach you how to read. That way you can read those books all you like." Tulma blushed looking away, "Oh no, I'm just a small servant."
Zelda waited for Tulma to finish the books and thought out. "I wonder when my mother will be back. That's quite strange of my father to have sent her away like that. I miss her."
Tulma smiled, "I'm sure your father had his reasons."
The door burst open, drawing their attention. A small squire had rushed to her door. "Milady, it's urgent! Master Link and Lord Viscen are fighting!"
Zelda slowly turned to Tulma with a certain eye, lacking surprise. Zelda followed the small boy down the hall; Tulma stayed behind. Despite the boy's size he was quite prompt. "Link, what're you doing now?"
"Do you know how the fight started?" She'd ask the hurried boy. "I only know that Lord Viscen was talking with Master Link when suddenly Master Link punched the Lord's face! It all went from bad to worse. I'm afraid if it continues they might draw their swords!"
When they had arrived at the barracks a crowd had already gathered around the training ring. It was fairly silent, people would 'dodge' and lean as if they were the one's actually fighting. In the ring's center Link and Viscen were at it. Link was throwing well balanced fists at his adversary, but the limber soldier dodged each one. Zelda nearly slapped herself when she set her hand to her face, "That idiot!"
"What's a matter, Link? Tired already?" Viscen mocked, snickering at him. Link still held his fists up, but he stood still, watching Viscen. "Oh? Not going to attack me anymore?"
Viscen was wearing his usual training uniform, simple but light armor; his sword strapped at his belt. Viscen was tall, taller than Link. His left eye was lost in the war, but his other green eye was watching for any slight movement from Link. His blonde hair was messy from their squabble and his face's bruise looked awful.
Link was hardly breathing to the extent of Viscen and that is what Viscen feared. Link was known for his unnatural stamina. He knew that if Link was ever able to calm is hot headedness he would easily defeat him. Link was dirty blonde, and bright blue eyed. He was unscathed from their squabble and planned to remain that way. He wore knee high leather boots, leather armguards and gloves, and a simple set of light chainmail underneath his forest green tunic. Link's sword was hitched to his back.
"You know, Link, what I said earlier. I meant it." Viscen tried to fuel the fire that stood not three feet from him. He feared that Link was calming himself.
"Four seconds." Link spoke. Viscen raised an eyebrow, still standing in defense, with fists in front of him. "Huh?"
"Four seconds is all I'll need."
Viscen let out a disbelieving snort and noticed Link's left slightly shifting- he was about to try something. Getting ready, Viscen watched him closely. Zelda inside her thoughts muttered, "One…"
A slight false lean to the left and a swift motion right, Viscen was utterly caught off guard. Link then quickly kicked up the sand that served as the ring's footing.
"Two…"
Link kicked his right leg toward Viscen's unbalanced right leg, tripping him.
"Three…" Zelda sighed, crossing her arms.
Link grabbed Viscen's arms twisting them behind him. "And four…" He sat upon Viscen's back holding him in an uncomfortable position with Viscen's head in the sand. "Okay okay! You win! Just get off me!"
Zelda rolled her eyes and pushed through the disappointed crowd. "You two do this every time." She grumbled, ducking under the rail of the ring. "I get called as if you two are going to kill each other and this is all you guys are doing?"
Link looked up at her, still sitting on his pinned victim. "Oh hey, Zel."
"Get off!" Viscen tried to squirm.
"Would you two act your age for a change? Seriously, Link you're two years older than me. And Viscen! You're what, in your thirties?"
Viscen grunted, being squished, "Thirty-seven."
Zelda glared at Viscen, "Now what did you say this time to make him so angry?"
Link stated, "Ah, nothing really. Besides, acting your age is boring. So I thought I'd let him discover the sweet taste of sand."
"And why is it I get called about this when you knights are over there watching this whole thing? Hm?" Zelda scowled at the spineless oafs that refused to meet eye contact. Zelda placed her hands on her hips and let out a sigh. "Still… I'm glad that was all you two were up to." She smiled.
Link smirked, "If I was ever serious, Viscen would be six feet under."
"Oh really? Is that a threat?" Viscen snorted, trying to shift. "It's not like I was being serious either."
"Is this what my best men are doing these days?" A low and well respected voice separated the crowd. Immediately they dispersed and returned to their duties, and Link finally released his prisoner. "Peace has not been kind to you two." His Majesty the King stood with hands folded behind himself. The king wore his royal garbs and crown. His hair was brown, short, and wavy; his eyes sapphire blue, like Zelda's. Viscen hastily hopped to his feet, knocking Link over.
Link glared, folding upward- his sword and backside covered in sand.
Viscen bowed, brushing off the sand from his clothes. Link, as usual, forgot to bow. "What are you doing here?" Link asked the king.
Zelda looked up at her father, "Is there something wrong?"
King Harkinian spoke with prowess, "I am not allowed to wander through my own castle?"
"Well normally when you show up something bad happens." Link scratched his head. Viscen had been patting himself, finishing cleaning himself off. "Is that how you see me?" The king chuckled. "But I do suppose I am here for something. I request a meeting with you three. Within the hour meet in my court."
Zelda, Link, and Viscen glimpsed at each other and watched His Majesty walk away. "See? Something bad." Link muttered looking at Zelda. "And it's probably your fault as usual." Viscen glared, rubbing his sore cheek.
Zelda had changed her clothes and Link and Viscen had cleaned themselves up. Eventually all three arrived at the court room. When Link had arrived Zelda and Viscen were already there, as well as the whole council. Link could tell they had been talking, maybe even about him. They had grown suspiciously quiet when he stepped in and walked to his seat at the end of the table.
Lord Vesh, Minister of Foreign Affairs sat in the seat closest to King Harkinian. Zelda was beside her father, at the right.
The King sat at the end of a long table. It was draped down the center with a long blue silk cloth; tapered at the edges. Lady Katarina, Minister of Religious Affairs, sat to the left; beside her at the right Lord Clai, Minister of State Affairs. Beside him Lord Kaim, Minister of Military Affairs. At the fourth chair sat Lady Illiandra, Minister of Judicial Affairs.
Lord Layle, Minister of Imperial Affairs, sat beside Vesh. The third right seat held the large Lord Baldon, Minister of Treasury. The fourth seat sat empty for foreigners or guests. Viscen was at the very end. He was the commander of the Paladins that protect the royal family.
Tapestries decorated the walls and thick red curtains draped along large windows. A grand chandelier hung from the ceiling lighting the dark room.
Link slowly sat, watching everyone, they stared at him suspiciously. "The fight with Viscen wasn't serious… we were just screwing around."
Harkinian gave a short glance toward the others before looking Link in the eyes and speaking. "Speaking with everyone here I've realized time and time again how much you've done for this kingdom and how little you have been rewarded."
Hurriedly Link spoke out, "It's quite all right. I've been rewarded plenty. Honest. I'm happy with everything I have." He was afraid of what they might give him.
The king continued, "Link, I was just informed you don't even have a place to call home. You live in the spare room in the barracks. That has to change. I've also been informed your pay is not enough to support yourself and your horse, forcing you to work in the marketplace; and on top of that you never have any personal days off."
"That's fine… I like working. It keeps me busy." Link muttered feeling like his lifestyle was being attacked.
"Your recent endeavor: invading enemy lines and rescuing one of our own, was never properly rewarded. Now." Harkinian silenced Link's attempt to speak.
"I have arranged for you to be fitted with a home and stable. You have been assigned a surplus allowance and it has been settled that you will be assigned a more reasonable work schedule."
Link remained silent, he was completely surprised and yet distraught at the same time. He didn't know whether to be flattered or not. There were plenty other people he knew that needed these things. He was content living the way he was.
Viscen leaned forward into the conversation. "Now, continuing."
Link whispered to himself, "There's more…?"
Viscen signaled for the two Guards at the doors to bring forward a sheathed sword. It was handed to the king.
Harkinian stood, drawing the golden hilted sword.
Link let out a long and exaggerated sigh of relief. "Oh… I thought it was a wife… I got the house… usually that's next."
Harkinian gestured for him. Link slowly began standing, thinking inside his mind, "Am I going to be a knight?"
He kneeled before the king, silently accepting. Harkinian tapped Link's shoulders with the blade, "With the power granted to me by the people of this kingdom and the goddesses I name thee 'Paladin'."
"Royal Guard..? I don't want that!" Link felt a knot in his stomach.
After the consents of the council and the other Paladins, the ceremony was complete. Link was seated and Harkinian returned to his chair.
Harkinian folded his hands under his chin, with elbows on the table. "Now Link, what do you think of my daughter?"
Link's whole body cringed, thoughts popping through his mind. "Ooh… There's the wife…and it's going to be her?!"
"I'm not sure I understand…" Link muttered. "It's a simple question, Link." Viscen laughed. Lady Katarina looked toward Harkinian, "I think it was best choosing him. The people would love it."
Harkinian turned to her, "As do I. Well, my boy?" He returned his gaze to Link.
"It is a wife… Katarina's involved…" Link stared at Zelda
Zelda's eyes darted about, "What's going on?"
Link was still quiet. Harkinian pressed the question. Zelda shoved her way in for an explanation.
"She's… Okay?"
Zelda's whole face twitched with response. "O-okay?!" Zelda exploded, "Okay for what?! I don't even know what's going on!"
The whole council stared at Zelda's behavior. The king attempted to calm the fire. "Settle down, Zelda. It's nothing serious."
Link scrunched his face thinking, "I'm pretty sure it is."
Harkinian silenced Zelda and informed them. "I ask this because for your first assignment as Paladin you will be protecting my daughter during the ball."
Link's shoulders drooped. He let out another relieving sigh. "Oh. That's it?"
Viscen raised an eyebrow looking at Link. "What did you think it was, Link?"
"Nothing."
"The ball is tomorrow."
Link quietly muttered to himself, "So that's what the décor is for…"
" Yes. Now I know this is sudden; but I'eida called for the ball on a short notice. All of the neighboring kingdoms are going to be there. Including the dangerous ones, I'm sure. These kinds of parties are perfect for assassins of any nature. The ball will be understaffed with limited guards. No weapons are allowed during these parties. You will have to make do with hands or whatever you find if the worst should happen. I will also inform you Zelda is of age for marriage. Many princes will approach her. Be on your guard throughout this ball. I trust you to protect my daughter. There are many enemies that would like to see Hyrule destroyed."
Link dourly nodded. "How many guests can I expect?"
Lord Vesh informed, "Well over three hundred. That is only what I know of. I'm sure there will be more. There hasn't been an open ball of this caliber in Hyrule in many years. Be sure to expect anything."
"Where will the guards be stationed? I need to know everything." Link stated.
Harkinian nodded, "I will have Gideon show you the plans in the evening when everything is decided. Perhaps you could even add some advice."
Link agreed and thought a moment. "What are the planned events? I'm sure this isn't just a fancy get together."
"I'eida is bringing performers and musicians. They are also bringing some lancers for a show in the arena. There will be dancing, a speech, and introductions for the kingdoms present. There will also be hearings for the princess. That will be the most dangerous." Lord Clai assured.
Link disagreed. "No. That will be the safest. Everyone's eyes will be on the princess. No one would try an assassination unless they had a death wish."
For a few hours more they discussed their plans for the ball. Finally Harkinian issued a dismissal. As everyone was leaving Link was just at the hall's door when Harkinian called out. "Oh, Link. I almost forgot. There's one more thing."
His body twitched as he turned, "What is it?"
"I have already told the tailor to start your uniform for the ball. He will be in the dressing room. I don't think you've been there before. You should have Zelda take you."
Glaring murderously at the servants measuring Link for his suit, he stood uncomfortably stiff and still. "If I had known this was part of the job I would have turned it down in a heartbeat!"
Zelda was there watching. "I don't think I have ever seen you in a tux before." She stated with her arms crossed. She leaned against the wall near the door.
"Neither have I." He grumbled. "You know…" He started to ponder. "I've been thinking." He suddenly flinched. The servant poked him with her pin. "I am alive you know!"
He snarled at her and then continued his thought. "I was thinking about why the ball is here and not in I'eida. Isn't I'eida the whole reason this thing is happening?"
Zelda answered, "Yeah. It is strange. Dad never said anything about why. I was talking to him earlier before we came here. Apparently the whole thing is Vesh's idea. When the ambassador for I'eida showed up with the proposal Vesh jumped right in. I guess Vesh thought it would be a good way to get more alliances closer."
"And enemies." Link hissed at the tailor who was tightening his jacket. "Why an open ball? That's a stupid idea if you ask me."
She let out a breath. "Again. Vesh's idea. He said we could get more 'friends' that way. It would make a good name for Hyrule."
"Also a great way for the enemy to sneak in and do whatever they please."
"…Yeah."
The room was quiet while Link was fitted. After the tailor was sure he had everything Link was allowed to leave.
"And why let Vesh do everything? That seems a little out of the ordianary."
Link had been lounging about, waiting for Gideon. While he waited he wandered the ballroom. Servants were frantically running about, rushing to prepare for the sudden ball. Eventually Gideon showed up with a few rolled up scrolls. Link assumed they were the 'plans' for the party tomorrow.
"Hey buddy, er I mean. Lord Paladin." Gideon playfully bowed and grinned. Link had rolled his eyes, "Just show me what's going on tomorrow. And don't ever call me that again."
Gideon smirked, "Don't like the title yet, huh? You'll get used to it." Quickly he informed Link of the various events, where they would take place, and what guards would be posted and where. Eventually Link had his fill of walking and the two parted ways for the night. They had nearly spent the whole evening walking through the party plans.
Link rested his eyes as he plopped on his bed. Despite given the new home, he stayed in the barracks. He honestly didn't know where his new house was or even if it had furniture. To him the barracks was his home; it was comforting to return to its quiet stone walls after a tiring and restless day. As he laid there in the dark room he recalled the past events. His memories drifted like rabbit trails, one thing reminding him of another fond memory. Soon he found himself remembering the day the king took him in and placed him in the barracks.
Link was an orphan; he never knew his parents. For as long as he could remember he was fending for himself in the unkind streets of Hyrule. He was ten years old when the king stopped his steed and stared down into Link's deep blue eyes. Link never understood why the king just suddenly ordered for his royal guard to take him to the castle. That was when he was brought to Gideon.
Gideon was a coarse soldier. He had been a knight up until Link became a foot soldier in the army. Gideon was promoted to lieutenant at that time. That first battle was terrifying.
"General, we're routed. There's no stopping them." Liam, a chief in Link's brigade, shouted over the canon fire. They were all standing in a deep ditch, taking what little shelter they could.
They all ducked being showered by dirt and loose stones. Gideon returned the shouts, "We have no choice! The king ordered us to breach their walls, that's what we're going to do!"
Link was with them, quiet. He wasn't sure whether he should be frightened like everyone else or follow his instincts. He felt he knew what he could do to save them. "Sir." Link attempted to speak, being silenced.
"If we don't do something about those canons we'll never pass this field!" A hiss flew by them, slamming the ground not far.
"Sir, I think I-"
"We need to retreat! There won't be any of us left if we stay here!" Liam covered his face as he was showered by dirt. General Tir was silent. Gideon tossed his head, "Forget the General, he's shaking in his boots. The man wasn't fit for this duty. Let's get these men out of here!" The two turned shielding their faces.
Link tried again. "I know how-"
The three ignored Link entirely as they attempted to snap the general back to reality. Without their knowledge Link drifted off. He was going through with his idea.
Link's eyes shot open. He relaxed his eyes letting out a breath, "Guess I fell asleep." He muttered sitting up. "Haven't thought about that day in a long time…" He let out a short yawn. After getting ready for the night he crawled in his bed, laying his head on his pillow. He closed his tired eyes and drifted to sleep, listening to the rain.
Early morning, guests were already arriving. Link couldn't believe their eagerness to stand around and eat food all day gabbing and gossiping. The ballroom was almost finished being prepared. Most of everything was there, save for food and beverages. Link himself was already in uniform, a sharp black tux. It was uncomfortable, he'd make sure they knew. He was standing at his seat, near the end of the room. There were four seats. The king, his wife the queen, Zelda, and himself, would sit there. The queen was absent, Zelda wasn't there yet, and the king was off talking to Vesh. Link kept his eyes from drifting to useless objects due to boredom. He was there on duty after all.
A Corish woman with her apparent husband approached the king. Link was unfamiliar with the country, but he knew they weren't allied with them. Judging by their attire they were just 'mooching' for food and possibly treasures. They were dressed richly, in fine silks and gemstones. Eventually Link's attention drifted to another early guest. He felt rather vulnerable. He had no weapons to defend himself, nor the mobility from his clothes. He felt confined.
The room, as any ballroom, was massive. Gravely decorated, it was one of the greatest rooms in the castle. The king was proud to have such a room. Statues carved from bronze shaped armored soldiers and glorious crystal chandeliers lit the room. Large rugs covered the marble tiles that formed the floor. Tapestries hung from the walls between the tall and narrow arch windows. Gold was laced decoratively on the pillars and walls. There was even a small fountain behind the seats for the royals. All the food tables were situated on the edges of the rooms. The food had not been placed yet, but the tables were there. A small section of chairs were between the assortment of tables for the musicians and entertainers.
In the end Link sat down on his seat waiting for this hellish thing to start. It had only been about an hour and he was already sick of it. He had this irritating itch that, with the tuxedo, he just couldn't reach. He knew if he popped a seam or something he'd never hear the end of it from the tailor. The little frilly man gave Link a grilling lecture about 'running around like a maniac'.
"Yo, Link!" Viscen trotted over to Link. His blue eyes looked up at Viscen. "We need another rider for the lancing event. How 'bout it?"
Link shook his head. "No, I don't know anyone, sorry."
Viscen snickered, "No you goof. Do you want to give it a try?"
Link scrunched his face, "You're asking me? I don't know… I'm supposed to be with Zelda for the whole ordeal."
Viscen playfully waved his hand, "Oh give it a rest. You're not the only paladin in this ball. You know there are ten of us right? Well, eleven now. Anyway, eight of us are stuck in this thing. Each one of us are protecting the king and his daughter. Besides I asked 'His Highness' if he approved of it. He pretty much said for you to enter it; in a roundabout way he said went on about how it'd look good for Hyrule."
"Eight? Where are the other three?"
"With the queen. Now, is it a yes or no?"
"I don't want to… but it doesn't sound like I really have a choice. Can I use Epona?"
Viscen lips curled on his face, "You'll own that field, pal."
Link sighed, looking off. "I've never done lancing before. Neither has Epona that I know of."
"It's quite simple." Viscen stated, improperly sitting in Zelda's seat. "Just point the pointy end at the other guy. Easy. Don't worry about killing the guy, you'll be geared up and the lances are just practice lances."
Link eyed Viscen again, "I've heard of rookies getting cracked ribs and worse from practice lances."
Viscen smiled widely, "Link, you're a noodle. They'll never hit you. Just follow your instincts. If you break the lance you get ten points. Tapping your opponent gets you only one point, but it's a safe bet. They'll explain it all when you get there. Don't worry, it isn't up until past noon."
"Yeah… because hitting someone can break your shoulder…" Link muttered watching toward Vesh and Harkinian. "It's such a stupid sport. Really. It's meant for killing people not having fun breaking bones and enjoying utter pain."
Viscen patted Link, "Oh don't worry about it. If you hold your lance right you won't have that problem. Just don't aim for the guy's head. That'll disqualify you instantly."
Link griped back, "Somehow I figured that already. If you're asking about lancing, that must mean I'eida showed up then?"
"They sure did, about twenty minutes ago. Apparently one of their lancers couldn't make it, and that's why I asked you."
"One of them? So you only asked me… There are actual professional lancers, you know."
Viscen grinned, "None of them have notoriety like you do."
"What's that supposed to mean? Why don't you do the lancing? You're popular." He bickered watching Viscen stand. He replied to Link, "Well, I should get going. There's still a lot that needs done. Have fun sitting here doing nothing." Viscen waved and walked away. Link glared, "Running away, typical."
Like Viscen said, I'eida had arrived. Their musicians and jesters appeared, with several nobles alongside them. Like clockwork they began talking and mingling amongst themselves.
Within a few hours it was almost noon. Link was terribly bored. By then the room was complete. All the foods and drinks were prepared and set on the tables. The musicians had begun their playing and thus the start of the ball. Most of the expected guests had arrived, only a few others were appearing here and there. There were always the late ones.
Link was wiggling his foot while sitting there. He had already profiled the people that were there. Two of them were suspicious but still nothing serious. The musicians' music became joyful and energetic with the peoples' dancing. There were laughs and brave solo dancers everywhere. The crowd was spirited and alive with the music. Though Link found himself sinking farther into his seat. Crowds and loud things always bothered him, he hated large groups of people. Link noticed even Harkinian was enjoying himself amongst the crowd.
Abruptly all stopped and grew still. The pride of Hyrule stepped into the great room. Link was quickly prostrate in his seat looking toward the stunning beauty.
Zelda's hair was pulled up into a bun; small gems were woven into her thick blonde hair giving it a glittery shine. Her sky blue and glittery gown flowed underneath her. It was a sleeveless and strapless gown. A white gold necklace rested below her neck; it was encrusted with brilliant sapphires, with dangling earrings to match. Her white tiara completed the picture, resting atop her blonde hair.
A big smile scrawled along her face as she approached Link. He was now standing on his feet. The crowd bowed in respect to the princess. Soon the two were seated and everything was as it was. The music continued and guests returned to their bickering and dancing.
Zelda ginned at Link, "You look rather nice with slicked back hair. I never thought I'd actually see you in clean clothes." She teased.
He gave a playful glare and returned her insults, "I was wondering if you'd be able to fit in your gown. You've been eating more than usual."
She scowled at him childishly, "Well, what's this I hear about you entering the lancing? I never thought you were one for those sorts of barbaric things."
Link's shoulders dropped, "Oh, that. You heard that already?" He sighed and leaned back in his seat. "I was sorta forced into it. According to Viscen they were lacking one guy and for some reason I was his first pick."
Zelda snickered, "You'd be perfect for it. You're an incredible horseman."
"So they say." Link blatantly stated. He had not forgotten about the two suspicious characters; but he didn't want to worry Zelda. He kept them in the back of his mind, keeping a discreet eye on them. One of the two in end was revealed to be a bodyguard for another noble. That left the one.
Abruptly their attentions were pulled to a young prince. His name was Nazeem. Prince Nazeem was of the desert people known as Sandsyns; enemies of the Gerudo Tribe. The three knew each other from long ago when the two countries were at war. They met during the peace treaty which has held for over ten years. Nazeem was average height with dark skin and slick black hair. His eyes were the common brown for his people. Nazeem wore the beige garb of the desert people of which he ruled over, with crown atop his head.
"Oh no…" Zelda whispered, her eyes jutting toward Link. "Don't Link. Just don't. You're a paladin now, behave yourself."
Link crossed his arms, slouching in his seat. "That man-whore will get what's coming to him. Oh, look. He saw you."
Just as Link had said Nazeem approached Zelda. The prince hadn't noticed Link's existence quite yet. "My dear, beautiful, princess." Nazeem kneeled to Zelda, taking her small hand and kissing it.
Zelda slightly smiled, "Nazeem, wow. I haven't seen your face in quite some time. I can't recall the last time we spoke."
"It's been two years." Nazeem stated, rising to his feet. "My how you've grown into a fine beautiful-"
"Go shove your head into someone else's backend. You know both Zelda and Harkinian don't like you so don't even bother. Not to mention several others." Link stated, grumbling in his seat.
Nazeem's head turned to Link. "Do I know you?"
Link gave an aggravated scowl to the desert prince when he suddenly perked, "Oh, that's right! You're the peasant that cheated in that little squabble from years ago."
Link sat right up, "I did not and you know it. It was a fair fistfight. It was just us two and you didn't like the fact that I totally creamed your sorry butt."
"Oh is that how you remember it? I recall it completely different." Nazeem sneered at him.
Link smirked, "Well of course. You would remember the pain and humiliation. I remembered the pleasure and joy of your defeat."
Nazeem was about to speak his mind but both were interrupted by Mikhail, a paladin, calling Link. Link reluctantly left the argument to see what the man wanted. Zelda watched the two of them walk away with a sigh. "Don't leave me here alone with him!"
"Do you," Nazeem started to ask, regaining Zelda's fleeting attention. "have any plans for after the ball?"
Zelda thought frantically for a second. "Actually yes, I do. I'm sorry. I have to meet someone."
"Oh, I see." He said.
"What about you? I can't see that you would have much free time now that you're Sultan."
Nazeem signaled for a drink and turned back toward the beautiful princess. "I was fortunate enough to have a father that took great care of his kingdom. He took account for everything, except his illness it seems. My advisors do most of the accounting and they come to me when the people need anything or they have concerns. Other than that I'm mostly free to do whatever I like."
"What about your alliances formed by treaties? I thought they all became void once your father died." She inquired curiously.
"An easy explanation was that they gave me a break because I am his son. We are all still allied until the treaties end. As for our enemies, they haven't crossed the border in over a year. It's odd really. Despite our being next door to the Dusk, they have not once come to our side."
Zelda crossed her arms and spoke out, "Not to make the situation worse… but that sounds rather concerning. Do you think they're planning something?"
Nazeem shrugged it off and took a sip of his wine that the servant brought him. The two continued talking about various things for quite some time. "Debating on it isn't going to change the situation any."
Link trotted back. "So what did he want?" Zelda asked.
He replied, "Uh… I don't really know to be honest. He called me over and then said to get lost."
Zelda scrunched her face. "That's… odd."
"Well there was a little more to it, but that's pretty much it."
Nazeem shoved his glass at his servant and spoke, "There's a rumor floating about my kingdom about an orphan boy becoming paladin. I would assume that this means you are a royal guard?"
Link eyed the desert prince. "Yes. What of it?"
"I'm just trying to see what they could possibly see in you."
Link expressed firmly, "Obviously the Hylians have better eyes."
Nazeem squinted but was prevented to defend. His servant informed him of something quietly. "I must tend to something urgent. I will be seeing you again. Farewell." He kissed Zelda's hand once more and departed.
"Something about that guy just pisses me off." Link voiced.
Zelda shook her head with a sigh, "You two have never gotten along. Hey." She suddenly called out.
Link turned to her, "Hm?"
"You want to go out to the garden after this is over?"
"It's pouring outside."
"No. It stopped several hours ago. That's why the lancing is still happening."
Link was momentarily silent. "You mean we're doing it outside? Epona is going to go nuts! You know how she is with outdoor arenas and other horses!"
"Oh don't worry about it. She'll be fine. So will you?"
He squinted, "Will I what?"
She half closed her eyes. "Will you meet with me in the gardens?"
"Oh. Sure, I guess."
After the announcements and introductions of the various kingdoms, the king, and Zelda, the ball had officially begun. Music and even a play gave the crowd some fair entertainment until the jousting tournament started.
Link stood with his arms hanging awkwardly outward. "I seriously have to wear this monkey suit? How am I supposed to even move? How do you suppose I get on my also armored horse?"
Viscen stood with an elbow resting on his arm; his hand covering his firm lips. He squinted trying to hold in the laughter. "It isn't that bad. Being covered head-to-toe is a good thing in this sport.
"My fingers are so stubby in this armor I'm not even sure I can hold a lance! How did you guys even survive putting that armor on Epona? She had to of been pissed."
"Apples are quite useful." Viscen stated. "Come on, let's get you on Epona. You can ride out in the ring to get used to the armor. The lancing is in the larger cavalry training ring. You're up against some guy named uh…" Viscen pulled out the crumpled paper from his pocket. He squinted reading the name. "I'eidan's and their titles… Leoric Holstein the Immovable. Well, he'll be moved today. Just remember." He stuffed the paper back into his pocket. "You're going fourth. You get three passes per round. Tap anywhere on him other than the head: one point. Make solid contact between armor plates: a solid three points. The best, broken lance without illegal moves: ten points. When you're ready to strike don't-"
"Hit the guy's head." Link rolled his eyes underneath his helmet. "Yeah, got that already."
"One of those guys is a champion lancer. I think his name was Ivan or something. He'll stand out from the crowd, believe me. His armor is flashy. Now get out there and make us proud."
Grumbling irately Link wobbled over to Epona.
Zelda seated herself in her royal seat beside her father up in the judge's booth. "Jousting huh?" She muttered. She watched with boredom as two men were situated on their horses, both at opposite ends of the lanes.
The cavalry ring had been transformed into two long lanes separated in the middle for the tournament. One man wore black armor while the other wore silver. An announcer shouted out their names and began the count down for the joust to start. A large crowd amassed to watch the battle between experts in the ancient art of lancing. By now Link had trotted over on Epona to watch. He had no idea what to expect. Looking about he could see the majority of the other contenders on their steeds. He had yet to see that 'Ivan' character though.
"Three..! Two..! One..!"
The two charged at each other. As they approached their lances lowered. The silver aimed perfectly, his lance tapping the metal plate over the black lancer's heart. The other missed. They reset their positions and waited for the countdown for round two. They charged, both tapping. Then the third round; they charged toward each other, their lances ready. The black lancer armed perfectly, pushing the other clear off his horse. Link winced as the body of armor clanked on the ground. He cringed thinking of how painful that must have been. After the next two pairs Link was next.
"What compels people to voluntarily jump on a horse and stab people painfully with sticks?" He muttered.
Zelda's interest piqued when she noticed the familiar horse. "Is that Epona?" She sat up high in her seat trying to see. The announcer called out his name, "To the right: Leoric Holstein the Immovable; Captain of the Nine Lords! To the left: Link Heroi, Eleventh Paladin of the Royal Guard!"
Nazeem choked on his wine, his eyes darting toward the ring from amidst the crowd. "Link is in there?!"
Link sighed, "Sounds so formal…" He took the lance that Viscen handed him, "Knock him off his horse! You'll get big points just because of the monkey's name."
Link looked down at him. "Are you serious?"
"I have no idea, but you will from me. Good luck!"
Link glared and looked ahead. "Not once, once in my life have I ever used a lance. This thing weighs a ton… I really do not want to fall off." He slightly leaned forward. "Do you even know what you're doing, Epona? I know I don't."
"Three..!"
Epona tossed her head and pawed the ground.
"Two..!"
She pawed faster. Link muttered quietly, "Oh no…"
"One..!" She launched without a cue. Link gripped with his thighs to stay on. Epona flew toward her opponent.
Viscen bickered, "What is he doing?! He's not supposed to go that fast!"
"Epona, no!" He shouted as they flew by, Epona nipped at Leoric's leg while Leoric's lance missed. Link never got the chance to lower his. He struggled to rein her in at the end to slow her for the stop. "Stop it! You can't attack the guy!"
She snorted at him and pawed. The countdown began. They launched once more, Link ready this time. He lowered his lance ready for the hit. The suspense of watching that lethal weapon draw closer toward him. Epona lunged at Leoric once more, setting Link off balance. Then a loud crack and jolting pain in Link's shoulder nearly caused him to fall. Leoric had broken a lance. Ten to zero. Link hunched over, "How is this a sport?" The I'eidans cheered for their victor. Zelda bit her lip and cheered Link on silently. "You can do it!"
Viscen was right there, "Are you all right?"
"Yeah, yeah. You owe me for this, you know that? Do me a favor, take this." Link pulled off his helmet and plated gloves.
"Are you nuts? You need these for protection!" Viscen assured trying to hand them back.
"Well, safety isn't really my style. Also, you got my spurs right? I need them."
"Oh, yeah, here. Those things look a little mean if you ask me." Viscen grabbed them from his belt. He snapped them onto Link's heels. "She giving you trouble out there? I noticed her nipping at the guy."
"Always." He turned Epona back around. They gave the signal to continue. "You sure about the helmet?" Viscen asked again. "Yes." He took his lance from Viscen and fixed his seat on Epona. The countdown started once again. The two charged for the final round. The crowd remained silent in suspense. Their lances lowered; a slam and clank of metal on the ground. The crowd stood dumbfounded and astonished.
"Woo!" Viscen leapt in the air with his fist high. Link trotted Epona around; his lance shattered and Leoric dismounted.
"Ten to ten, Leoric Holstein disqualified for falling off of his mount. Link Heroi is the victor!" The announcer shouted to the crowd. Hyrule's inhabitants all roared with vigor, cheering. Harkinian grinned with admiration. "He did it after all."
Zelda turned to her father, "I didn't know Link did lancing."
"He doesn't. Viscen approached me and asked me to allow him to enter. I thought he was mad. But now I see Link is not to be trifled with, even in lancing."
Link waited on Epona beside Viscen while the remainder of the contestants ran through their turns. He massaged his injured shoulder, regretting agreeing to this torture. "Looks like you'll be up against that Derek fella next." Epona was on free rein, munching away on the grass.
"There's what… eight people, me included?"
"Yes. You'll be going in after Ivan and Jackson, who are in there right now. Derek is that guy." Viscen pointed in the direction of a tall man in blue armor. He had his helm face up while sipping a drink.
"You are going to wear your helmet, right?"
"Not a chance." Link stated immediately. He sat watching the second round of Ivan and Jackson. Ivan had already broken a lance, the other man tapped Ivan.
"So they call that guy the 'Bone Breaker' right? I would assume it is because he breaks lances?"
Viscen nodded, "As far as I know, the guy breaks more than that. He gets away with messing up people because he's some rich guy and he doesn't strike them illegally. Somehow he aims his lance just right to get between the armor plates. I've heard he put some guy in the infirmary for weeks once."
"Sounds delightful. Maybe I'll just fall off Epona during my next go and get it over with-"
"So this is the lad that defeated me." A voice approached. Leoric walked up to them looking up at Link. "To think I was defeated by you."
Link sat casually on his chestnut mare, "And?"
"Hmph." The man snorted, "You can't even hold a lance properly."
"Says a lot for you, doesn't it?" Link replied with a smug smirk.
Epona lifted her head and looked at Leoric. The two stared at each other for a moment. Abruptly the horse flattened her ears and lunged at Leoric, head-butting him. Epona snorted on the dazed man and continued her grazing as if it had never happened.
"She's been irked to do that since the duel. Perhaps you'll learn to not stand so close to a foreign animal." Link looked down at Leoric, he grunted standing. "What's wrong with that horse? I did nothing to it!"
"She just doesn't like you. Can't say I blame her."
The I'eidan fans of Ivan shouted with whistles and cheers when Jackson was pushed off his horse with a forceful attack. Ivan was the victor. "Guess I'm next… whoopee…" Link tightened his reins and hugged Epona to walk. "Sorry 'bout the head-butt."
Link trotted to his place inside the lane. Viscen handed him his lance and wished him luck.
The announcer introduced them and began the countdown. They charged, lances lowering to aim. They both flew by, tapping their shoulders. Then the next round flew by, they both tapped once more. They neared the end of their lanes, Viscen standing at one. "Are you even trying to win?"
Link scowled harshly, "Why don't you hop on a horse and run straight at a lethal weapon? Yes, I'm trying. But this guy is on the defensive." The countdown had already begun as Link spoke. The horses launched.
Link lowered his lance, going for gold. He'd either lose it all or defeat Derek. His lance impacted, bending and shattering. Derek had merely tapped. As they slowed their horses to a stop the announcer called out their scores. "Derek: three! Link: twelve! Link is victorious!"
They led Epona out of the lane and exited the area for the next two people: Ivan and Caleb.
"If you win this next round you'll be 'champion'. But that Ivan guy is tough."
"He fights dirty." Link stated, sipping some water that Viscen had handed him. Despite the constant rain today was rather hot and humid. Surprisingly most of the ground had dried up due to the sun shining down directly upon it.
The two watched as Ivan swept Caleb off his horse with one strike. The round was finished.
Link sighed and handed Viscen his tin cup. "That was uncomfortably fast. Hopefully I won't look like that." He trotted toward the ring. Zelda and Nazeem pushed themselves to the barrier, ensuring they won't miss one second of the duel. Zelda was filled with suspense.
Again the announcer shouted out the names and began the countdown with not a moment to waste. The crowd was silent, watching the match closely. Their horses launched at the last shout. They drew closer and closer, their lances honed in. Link prepared for the sudden jolt of pain. Ivan shattered his lance below Link's chest plate; but Link had also shattered his. It was a tie. They both caught their breath at the end of their individual lanes. Link hunched wincing. "I'm going to be sore there for a month! I swear I think a rib's broken."
Viscen looked him in the eyes, "Are you sure? If so then we have to stop and you will lose by default."
Link thought a moment, hoping the pain would recede, "Maybe it's just a crack… I can't tell with this armor in my way. Plus." He turned his head toward Ivan. "It's personal now."
Viscen patted Link's knee and turned Epona around, whilst handing him a new lance. "If you can knock him off you're champion."
"I think that's what he has in mind." Link stated, gripping his lance tightly. He rose his hand signaling he was able to go the second round. Finally they were a go. The two charged after the countdown. Both flew by, with the crowd gasping in surprise. Neither made contact with their lances. Link muttered to Viscen, "He must be hurtin'. He didn't even try to hit me. I didn't even hit him between the plates, pathetic."
The two charged, they both were better prepared. Their lances drawing closer; their horses' hooves thundering. A loud crash with two broken lances. The crowd stood in utter surprise. Both Link and Ivan lie on the ground, off of their horses. A group of assistants help pulling them up. "I guess that worked." Viscen mumbled, "But you weren't supposed to fall off too…"
Link glared in reply, "I had nothing else I could do. I sacrificed balance to take him out. Apparently he did too."
For several moments the announcer was silent. The crowd waited desperately for results. "W-well, I am still shocked to see it with mine own eyes!" The announcer started, "I'eida and Hyrule truly have masterful lancers! Not once has this happened! I have discussed this with both leaders and they have decided to bestow the title 'champion' to both riders, regardless of their falls!"
"Seriously...?" Link sat on a bench with an eye of disbelief. Viscen had begun removing his armor to check his wounds. "I can't say I really wanted another title. Paladin was pushing it."
Viscen grinned, "Oh come on, you should be proud of your victory. You have to consider the facts here. Each one of those guys has been training for years. You started your lancing training in the ring with them. You surprised all of us."
"Oh, so you didn't think I'd win?" Link looked up at him. Viscen pulled off his heavy chest plate, "I had faith. You somehow always pull through. I think you're the fastest learner I have ever met. Congratulations on your victory."
"Was that it for Link?" Zelda inquired to her father.
"I believe so. The tournament is over. The I'eidans will still continue with the jousting and various other cavalry activities. Why is it you ask?" Harkinian looked toward her from his seat.
"Well I was going to go see him."
Vesh sitting beside Harkinian leaned and whispered something to him. Zelda could only wonder what he was saying. She stood to leave and meet with Link but was stopped by her father's voice.
"Sit back down." ordered Harkinian.
"But I was going to go see Link." She stated confused.
"I don't want you with that boy anymore."
"What?" She was utterly dumbfounded. "Why? You were fine with him five minutes ago."
"I said sit. Do you wish to disobey me?" He looked her in the eyes. She quietly slumped back down on her seat. "What's your problem? What did that weasel Vesh say to you?"
Gideon patted Link on the back hard, nearly causing him to choke on his water. "Ow." He stated, "I still ache all over, you know."
Gideon happily plopped beside Link. He had been examined for any injuries moments before. "I'm real proud of ya. To think you actually won that thing. Astounding. Want to enter the archer challenge next?"
"No."
"Aw come on. I know you'd win that. You're terrifying with a stick and string."
"That doesn't even make sense." He glared at Gideon.
"They're doing a cavalry march in about twenty minutes if you want to go see it. They'd probably even let you join it." Viscen was sitting with them, eating a barbecue sausage.
"No."
"Drinking contest?"
Link stared Gideon down. "Seriously? We are on duty."
"Hey, you didn't say no that time." He smirked.
Link rolled his eyes looking toward the crowd. Something caught his eye. Amongst the excited crowd a cloaked figure stood in the background. His hood was dark but Link could feel eyes on him. He could sense this ominous presence as if it were calling to him.
"Link!" A sharp shout cut Link's attention. His eyes shot toward Viscen, "Hm?"
"What were you so focused on? We were both talking to you and you didn't even notice."
"Oh." He looked back toward where the shadowy character was. He disappeared, nowhere to be found. The presence was gone. "There was… a man."
Viscen and Gideon looked at each other with scrunched faces. "Well a nurse just told me that you do have a cracked rib. So our little proposition of more stunts is out. She said no riding or fighting for a while."
"K." Link muttered still looking toward the empty space where the man once was. "You feelin' all right?" Gideon asked him.
"Yeah, let's just get something to eat." He mumbled standing.
The three eventually found themselves in a steakhouse, a fancy one, Link would think. They sat at their table, already been given three mugs of ale. The waitress departed, leaving them with some options for food.
"Since when do you drink? Usually you flip out when they give you some." Gideon eyed the odd Link. Link slowly looked in to his mug. "I'm just a little tired." He slurred leaning in his stool. Soon it came to pick their meals. Link had nothing to say, Viscen ended up picking for him. After the waitress left with their orders of three medium-rare steaks Viscen stared down Link. He waved his hand in front of Link's face causing him to squint. "What?" Link pushed Viscen's hand away.
"You're totally zoned out. You didn't even pick your food! You're obsessed with food."
Gideon added, "Not to mention you always go nuts when we take you to an expensive place. You didn't even bat an eye. What's up?"
Link stiffened in his seat, sitting up. "Don't you both think it's a little odd? I'm promoted one day before this random ball. A ball which so happened to be started by I'eida, whom we've been sketchy with since a year ago when they accused us of murdering their prince. And as it turns out, he's still running around, very much alive. Then they show up as if we're best buds. They even had a jousting tournament like they own the place. Maybe it's just me, but it is off. There's something they aren't telling us. And what's up with Vesh? Have you noticed him following the king like a dog? He won't let Harkinian out of his sights. Why was I promoted now? Why give me a house? I've been here twelve years and not once have they acknowledged my abilities. They never even rewarded, or thanked me for saving their cowardice soldiers the first time I ever fought for this country. Now I'm a champion and paladin? Why now?"
Viscen and Gideon glimpsed at him. "I think you're reading into this a little too much, Link. Did you smack your head when you fell off your horse?"
"Did you forget he sent the queen away? Harkinian didn't do that, Vesh did. I bet you two were clueless. Everyone thinks His Majesty sent her away to protect her. No. Vesh got rid of her, I'm sure of it."
Viscen jutted Link with his elbow, "Are you nuts? Why are you spouting all this nonsense?! If the guard heard you you'd be arrested for conspiracy! Where is all this even coming from?"
Link glared and plopped back against his stool. "I should've known you wouldn't take me seriously. If you're really all that great, then stop denying all the odd things that are going on around here." He stood and left the restaurant. Gideon and Viscen glanced at each other with bewildered eyes.
A man abruptly entered the building, asking about for someone. Viscen raised his hand, "Hey, messenger, who are you looking for?" The man with the pack hanging on his shoulder trotted over, "Paladin Link. I heard he came here."
"Yeah, you literally just missed him. Why? Maybe I can pass on the message for you." Viscen replied.
"King Harkinian has summoned him." The man handed a scroll sealed with a royal emblem. "He wishes to see him immediately."
"Alright, I'll go look for him. You go do your other duties. Finding Link can be a bit tasking." Viscen stood and patted the man. "I thank you, Lord."
Gideon raised an eyebrow, "So, what? You expect me to eat three steaks? Thanks, I was trying to lose weight. You better cough up the cash. I'm not paying for two ditchers."
Viscen chuckled and pulled out his purse. "Here." He handed him two red rupees. "That should be plenty. I'll catch up with you later." He waved heading out.
Viscen's first location he tried was Link's old room in the barracks. But he wasn't there. He asked around the barracks if they had seen him, but no such luck. No one had seen him. He wandered to the stables. Maybe he was with Epona?
Viscen trotted down the long stable, horse heads peering out of almost every stall to see the noise. Once he arrived at Epona's stall, the door was open and she was gone. "Great. Who knows where he went." He turned to the stable boy who was mucking. "Hey, did you see where Link went?"
The boy shook his head, "I only just got here, sorry."
"Fetch my horse, promptly. I need to find him."
Once his horse was prepared, Viscen ventured out of the castle walls and out to the fields. "He must have gone to Hylia. But that's hours from here. The woods? Maybe. He's always had a strange attraction to that cursed place."
Thus he headed for the Lost Woods. Once he had arrived he could see horse hooves entering the veil of trees. "I was really hoping he wasn't in there… Should I just wait for him to come out? No… He could live in there for months if he wanted. Considering his attitude when he left, he probably will." He reluctantly asked his horse to enter the dark forest. The horse was already on edge, head high, blowing large amounts of air, ears alert. "Link!" He called out. "I know you're in here!"
Viscen's black steed gave a wrestle, demanding they return to the field. Viscen resigned and trotted out of the woods. He dropped off his tall beast and dropped the reigns. "Whoa." He told it, and continued back inside on foot. "This is nuts. Going in an unknown place… without a horse… without a sword…" He jolted hearing a rustling in the underbrush. He struggled to follow the horse tracks in the dark light of the woods, but he managed. "Link!" He called out again. Soon he could see a horse, no saddle, or bridle. Now he began to wonder if it was wild. Finally as he cautiously approached he could see it was in fact Epona. "Hey." He quietly spoke reaching out to her. She let out a snort at him and returned to her devouring of the leaves. "Where's your dad?" He asked her.
Viscen looked about, eventually looking up. He could see a foot dangling from a large branch. He scowled and shouted, "I know you're up there. I can see you! Stop hiding! You've been summoned by the king!"
Link peeked over the side. "Hiding?" He quicly crawled down, "I didn't even know you were looking for me. What does he want?"
Viscen shrugged, "I don't know." He shoved the scroll at Link. "You left Gideon with your steak."
"Apparently you did too." Link voiced unrolling the scroll.
Viscen crossed his arms. "Except I actually paid for mine. I didn't get to eat it and I coughed up the cash. Do you know why I didn't get to eat it?"
"No. Why?" Link grumbled skimming through the scroll.
"Because I had to find you, because you took off! And did you already forget about your rib bone being cracked? What's wrong with you?!"
"I didn't ask for you to find me. And I've had far worse injuries and was just fine, thank you." Link stated and crumpled up the scroll. He started to walk for Epona. "So, what does it say?" Viscen scowled.
Link gave a smug eye after hopping on Epona, "None of your business." He hugged her for a trot and began to leave.
"You're just going to leave me here?!" Viscen cried. "You got here, didn't you? You can get out. You need to brave it up a little more. The woods aren't so bad." Link assured, disappearing in the darkness.
Viscen jumped hearing a howl in the distance. "I'm going to kill him if I survive this!"
By the time Link had arrived at the castle it was sundown, and it had begun to rain once again. I'eida and many other guests were still there, enjoying the party. Link left Epona to go to her stall on her own when he hopped off at the castle doors. He jogged in to get out of the cold rain. He quickly asked a guard where Harkinian was and headed that way.
Once he arrived at the court hall he approached, "You asked to see me?"
Harkinian eyed him up and down for a moment, "Yes… Several hours ago. But I suppose this will do."
Link sat down, noticing Harkinian slightly wrinkle his nose and lip, obviously disagreeing with Link's soaked apparel in that seat.
"I summoned you because we have an urgent mission for you."
"Already? We just had the ball!"
"Yes, I know. You don't have to leave until three days from now. I spoke with my court and we decided that would be enough time for you to rest and prepare for your trip." The king stated, adjusting his robe, disgusted by Link.
"My trip to where? What am I going to be doing?" Link inquired.
"You will be escorting a prisoner. His name is Veridan Ardonas Orian."
"That's a mouthful." Link murmured trying to work out the name in his mind.
"Orian is a Dusken Elf. You will be transferring him to Dusk where you will be given a relic relevant to our people in exchange. Your mission is to get him there safely, and return with the relic. You do not have a choice in this matter. You will fulfill this task."
Link silently grumbled, "Like I was going to say no anyway." He spoke out, "Where am I taking him, you never really said."
"You will be taking Orian to an outpost located in Dusk. My advisor Vesh will give you a map. Orian will likely be unwilling to return to his people, so it will be safe to assume he will attempt an escape." Harkinian dourly informed.
"Okay." Link stated, standing. "Is that it?"
Harkinian nodded and gestured for him to leave. After receiving his map Link was ready to return to his home. Vesh had also given him the address and key to his new house. Link, of course, went there to inspect his new property. Though it was night he could tell the house was large, just by the entrance. This house was in the rich district of castle town. Using the key he was given he unlocked the door and entered. The rich's homes are lit using a special magic, and this house was one of them. The entrance alone made up nearly half the size of the room he had in the barracks. A chair and table with a glowing orb was to the right of the door. A picture of the king hung above it. Link hastily pulled that down and rested it face against the wall. To the left was a small shelf with some books and decorative trinkets. On the floor was a pile of his things from his room in the barracks. A lush rug was underneath his feet as he walked to the next room. This room was the foyer. Cozy seating was in the center with a coffee table, with a fireplace behind it. Small statues framed the room with pictures and bookshelves. A large chandelier hung from the ceiling as well. To the right was a dining room, complete with a six seat table and a kitchen connected to the side. The kitchen was large, complete with an icebox and clay oven. The kitchen was already stocked with foods; Link hadn't seen so much food in one room before.
To the left of the foyer was a recreational room. By now Link quit inspecting all the furniture, he was ready to see upstairs where he would sleep. He ignored the other rooms atop the stairs. There were at least seven rooms. He peeked in one, which was surprisingly the master bedroom. He walked in with awe. The bedroom was huge to Link. A grand king bed lie at the center of the back wall. Two nightstands accompanied the bed, with intricate lights atop them. A great scenic picture of waterfalls hung above the bed. To the left a hand carved maple dresser, already with Link's clothes inside. To the right a chest which was also hand carved maple. On the right wall by the door was a second door, a washroom. A mirror larger than Link had ever thought possible hung above an iron washbasin. A cast-iron tub was also in the room, with a stained glass window above it.
Link exited the washroom and walked over to the bed, plopping on it, forgetting his injury. It was so soft and comfortable he couldn't help but fall asleep within minutes.
By the time he opened his eyes and looked toward the window of his bedroom it was morning. He hadn't moved once the whole night. He shifted uncomfortably, grunting with aches in his neck and back. He shook his head and blinked his eyes a few times, waking. After changing out of his old clothes he skipped steps down to head for the kitchen. He snatched a loaf of bread and exited the house, locking the door behind him. He walked down the street pausing to watch a small group of people walk down the street. "I'eidans? Why are they still here?" He slightly shook his head and continued on his route to the barracks.
The streets were fairly calm and quiet at this early hour of the morning in the rich district, so it was easy to get there with little interruptions. He arrived at the training grounds hearing Gideon, "You live in another location and you still get here earlier than everyone else. You need help."
"I wake up early. Is that a problem?"
"No. But you are injured. And last night, what was your deal? You haven't even healed! Goodness my young man. You're going to burn yourself out before you ever even hit thirty!"
Link walked over to assist Gideon in preparing the trainee weapons, "Well, then I have eight years left. No sense wasting that little time is there?"
"You're not right in the head. A lad like you is supposed to be seeking his fortune, finding his place in the world, getting a girl! Something. At least not something like what you're doing. At least take a break and heal, is what I'm saying." Gideon complained to him, shoving a pile of practice swords on the table.
"Well I didn't ask for the job, nor did I have a choice in taking it. I don't know what Viscen told you, oh…"
"What?" Gideon paused with an eyebrow raised.
Link curled a corner of his lip, "You seen Viscen lately?"
He thought a moment, "Nope, can't say I have. He's usually here early too. Last I saw was last night at the steakhouse, which by the way you owe me cash."
"I sort of left him in the Lost Woods, yesterday."
"Sort of?!" Gideon sighed, "What'd you go and do that for?"
"I wanted time to myself and he showed up and pissed me off."
Gideon sighed and dropped down a box of armaments. "Least he can handle himself I suppose. Let's just get this done." Link quickly agreed and they continued carrying supplies back and forth.
Zelda wandered down the hall, filled with boredom. She planned to visit her father and see when her mother would be home. As she trotted down the guarded halls to the council room she approached the door. Reaching her hand for the door she paused, hearing voices. Instinctively she leaned inward toward the door to listen. The two voices were hushed and muffled and were awfully hard to hear.
"What if it doesn't… planned? Then what? What if… survives… the trip?"
"Hush, nobody would… a trip there. You did… asked right? Even if he does… something planned."
"I've done everything you've suggested. But this is more than it should be. Sending him out there like that is bound to cause curiosity." The other voice rose slightly.
"You kept this… and you, correct?"
"Yes. Only us three know about it. But what will… think… leaving?"
"Let me take care of that. You… up with the plan. He'll be dead and gone before he returns."
Zelda could hear footsteps approaching; she quickly opened the door and let out a smile. "Hey daddy." Vesh and Harkinian were alone inside.
Harkinian clearly swallowed a knot, "O-oh, darling. You surprised me. What is it?"
"Oh, I'm sorry. Did I interrupt something important?"
"No no, it's quite all right."
"Okay. I was just dropping by, was wondering when mom will be back?" Zelda asked, keeping her eavesdropping a secret. She could see a discriminate glance between the two. "Oh. Yes… I'm sure you miss her, but she won't be back for quite some time."
"Well then just tell me where she is and I can go see her. You sent her away for safety right? I can sneak out and be safe too."
"It could compromise her safety. It's best you stay here." Vesh intruded in their conversation and clearly injected dominance with his voice.
Zelda hid in her suspicions of Vesh and clenched her teeth, "I understand. I shouldn't have bothered you two with my trivial wishes. Excuse me." She lightly bowed and turned to leave.
"If you're going to see Link, I suggest you think otherwise." Vesh called out firmly.
Link sat up on the rail of the training ring, utterly bored. He watched over three trainees that Gideon assured him they were ready for higher training.
"The pointy end goes in the other guy. I know that's hard, but there is a handle on the other end." Link grumbled at one of the trainees.
"I know!" The recruit cried, staggering everywhere.
Link let out an aggravated and desperate sigh. "Try actually swinging at the guy next time. Your chances of missing will be much less."
"I see you're as harsh as ever. Leaving people stranded in cursed forests and abusing the recruits. Quite the record you have there." A hand and two legs appeared up on the fence beside Link. It was Viscen.
"Eh." He groaned. "I didn't realize I'd be babysitting when I took this job. Stop closing your eyes when you swing! It's made of wood! You won't even stab the guy!" He shouted at the trainee and turned to Viscen, "This is what I have to deal with."
Viscen chuckled, "They're learning. Remember when you first started?"
"Yeah, and I put you on your soft cheeks."
Viscen's face twitched. "They didn't feel so soft at the time."
"Well there was less of you then."
"Heeey." Viscen scowled. Link watched one of the trainees flop on his stomach. "What are you tripping on, invisible stumps? It's a smooth sandy floor! Stop tripping over yourselves and hold your weapons correctly! Where did he find these idiots? Is this some sick joke? They're getting hired to do this to me aren't they? I just know it."
"Look, about yesterday." Viscen started.
"Forget it." Link interrupted. "I was tired and frustrated."
"Tired and frustrated? You don't go saying things like that when you're tired. There was more to it than that. If you need to talk, you know I'm always around."
"Viscen, Link! You need to come see this immediately!" A soldier dragged them out, leaving behind the recruits.
"What, somebody actually knows where the sword goes?" Link asked the frantic guard. "The courtyard!"
They hustled out of the barracks toward the large gate of the castle. As they approached the outside they halted. Link slowly approached the fountain in the center. "Kaim…" The fountain streamed red, the body sat limp in the fountain.
Viscen briefly averted his eyes and turned back, "Somebody put him like that symbolically, but what could it mean? And why? Why Kaim?"
Link glanced to the crowd, "Nobody saw anything?"
The guard shook his head, "No, everyone has been questioned. Rei found him."
"How could no one see anything? This is the courtyard, there are always people rushing about through he-" Link's voice paused, his eyes locked on that same cloaked figure from before.
"Link." Viscen snapped his fingers. "Hello?" Link turned to Viscen and stated, "It's just hard to believe no one saw anything." He turned back toward the crowd where the cloaked figure was. But he was gone. He squinted his eyes and shook his head, turning toward the guard and Viscen. "We should get these people out of here and notify the constabularies. See if you can get anything off his body, I'll see if I can find out what Kaim was doing before this happened."
"Wait-!" Viscen tried to stop Link but he had already shoved his way through the crowd and disappeared around the stone arch.
Link glanced around the seemingly empty alley. He could see a glimpse of the cloaked figure disappear around a corner. Quickly he sprinted toward the area and slid around, only seeing a quick glimpse. He hugged the corner peeking around, seeing again only a portion of the cloak wisping around the corner. Link knew it was a dead end down that path and charged in to corner the stranger. He rounded the corner and stopped his feet, sliding slightly. The dead end was empty, no cloaked man or anything. Link scrunched his face, his eyes darting around; he had to of missed something. There was nothing.
Zelda caught up with Viscen, "What's this I hear about Kaim? He was murdered?" Viscen looked over his shoulder as he was hastily walking, "You heard too? News travels fast. It appears so. Unfortunately no one has any idea what happened or who did it. The coroner has already started examining the body, but he said there wasn't much… left to go by. All he told me was that the weapon used wasn't anything from around here. The cuts weren't normal dagger or sword wounds. He said it could have even been black magic."
"Black magic? Who would use something like that?" Zelda muttered looking ahead toward where they were walking. "Where's Link? Usually he's right close helping with this sort of thing."
"He said he'd go ask around to see if Kaim stuck his nose in something he shouldn't have. Basically. Haven't seen him since. That was…" He thought, "Three hours ago. My best guess would be he's terrorizing some random people on the street. I don't know. If anything Link's been acting weird too."
Zelda stopped in her tracks quickly looking side to side, causing Viscen to stop as well. "You think Link is acting weird? You should see my father. He's practically condemned me seeing Link."
"But that's not stopping you." Viscen raised his eyebrows slightly, continuing his hurried walk.
"Not at all."
The investigation continued for various hours, the stormy rain proceeded to ruin any chance of evidence and the guard was upped greatly. By then the sun had set. Link sat in the guards' bar on a stool leisurely eating his porridge. A few others were there getting a drink or a meal. The room was quiet with little sound of voices or sputtering of feet. Only the sound of clicks of spoons and forks.
Eventually the sound of footsteps approached Link, then the squeak of the stool beside him. Viscen sat beside Link, cuing for a drink. He looked to the side at Link. "Find anything?"
"No." Link mumbled spooning in more food.
"Doc says black magic killed him."
Link's spoon stopped and he quickly glanced at Viscen. "Black magic?"
"Yep. And his heart and one of his ribs had been removed."
Link looked back toward his no longer appetizing porridge with a scrunched face. "You tell me while I'm eating."
Viscen let out a quick and quiet chuckle, "I asked the mages if they knew what those would be used for, but they got offended as if I accused them of witchcraft. Though one did say he didn't know because it would be a higher level of black magic. Apparently human organs and various other 'lovely' things are used in powerful spells used for necromancy and curses."
"If we have Redeads running around we'll know."
"Or a sudden case of the Plague." Viscen added. "Don't even joke about that…" Link scowled, scooping more soup.
Viscen spoke more about the happenings as a guard approached them from behind. He leaned toward the two and whispered in their ears.
"Lord Layle now…" Viscen stood beside Link, both eyeing the bloodied corpse in the morgue. Link crossed his arms and glanced toward the soldier, "No one saw anything I'm guessing."
The soldier nodded and explained how the wounds were exactly like before. "The only difference is that an eye and finger are missing." The coroner stated to them.
Link thought a moment and then quickly asked, "Do you think it's possible to trace the magic back to the caster? There has to be some sort of trace left on his body." Viscen shook his head hastily, "Good thinking, but I was talking with the princess earlier and asked her that same question. She told me it is impossible with black magic."
Link let out a sigh, "Then what? Up the guard? What good that did. I'll go check out where he was murdered. Maybe there was something we missed…"
With that said Link set off to the ballroom. Apparently Layle had been overseeing the cleanup. When he arrived the crew had almost finished putting the room as it was before the party. He approached several different bystanders or workers and all gave the same response. "We were all working like before and never realized he was gone until the guards came in asking everyone what happened."
One in particular told Link, "What's strange was that he was always telling us something. Like where something should go or what to move next. Yet none of us ever noticed his silence."
Link left the ball trying to make sense of their statements. "Perhaps it was some sort of magic trickery? An illusion on that scale would cost an enormous amount of power… Who could be powerful enough to pull off something like that? It would explain why no one noticed either murder. But it's too impractical."
"Link!" Viscen caught Link outside the castle. He huffed a little, "Big guy wants to see you, like now."
"What for?" Link scrunched his face. Viscen shrugged and led Link to where the king awaited their arrival. Viscen was gestured to leave almost immediately when they arrived.
They were down in the underground prisons in front of a certain secluded cell. Link approached, asking their reason. "Link, we know it hasn't been that easy of a day but the council… the remaining council and I have agreed that you should leave tomorrow morning, before the sun has risen. We are having the prisoner" Harkinian held his hand toward the door, "prepared for your departure. Take this time now to gather your gear and be ready to leave in the early morning."
"Why leave now?" Link rudely questioned. "There are murders going on and you want me to leave almost two days early? I've barely had time to heal."
"We want you to leave now because we believe whoever is doing this will either be targeting you next, or is even after the prisoner."
"And why would they target me? I'm not a 'member' of your council."
"No, but Kaim and Layle were. They were also in charge of military and defense of this castle. We all agree that there is a possibility that the murderer will target the paladins now. Whatever you need, inform the armorer and he will provide it for you. You still have the map Vesh gave you, correct?"
"Yeah." Link mumbled out looking toward the prison door. He knew they had made up their minds and nothing would change that. Link at least wanted to help investigate, but it seems that is impossible.
Link gathered his supplies such as food, two canteens of water, a pair of flint rocks, a sword, bow, and a full quiver of arrows. He bundled them up in his room and then dropped down on his bed with a long sigh. He stared up at the ceiling of his new home pondering the recent events once more, trying to organize his thoughts in his mind. Who could have caused those murders? And why? What was it all for?
Link resigned his thoughts and rolled over to sleep. It was late by the time he finally drifted off, with constant toss and turns. In his restless sleep he continued to toss and turn, flinching in his nightmares.
He opened his eyes to a room, dark, cold, musty, and filled with a repulsive aroma. Only one torch barely lit the room. He glanced about, turning his body, but feeling a restraint. He glanced down, cuffs bound him to a chair. His skin was black, and the chair was strange, made of an unfamiliar material. He struggled with the restraints to no avail. A glooming door in front of him howled as it dauntingly opened. A shadowy figure entered, paired with another unidentifiable man. He could hear them speaking mutely.
"What should we do with him? The High Elves already seek an execution…"
"An execution would be pointless. He would reincarnate and then be lost to us once again."
"We can't keep him locked down here forever." The two men traded their words.
He was utterly confused and unsure of what was going on. What were they talking about?
"And what if the demon escapes? Then what? We'll be held responsible and have US executed!"
"Don't worry your little head. The answer is simple. Seal his power, his will, everything. Even if the beast dies and reincarnates he won't remember who he was, or is."
Link darted awake, sitting straight upward. He had felt a presence; in the dark corner of the room stood the cloaked man utterly motionless. Link twisted swiftly and gripped his sword. He swung it toward the stranger, but he was already gone.
Link relaxed his arm, lowering his blade. After a few moments of settling down he sheathed his sword and plopped it back on the small pile of supplies. "That dream was so real, but…"
He shuttered and removed the map from his satchel. He may as well get familiar with the route. There was no way he'd fall back asleep now. He used his flint rocks and lit a candle on the desk to better view the detailed map. He leaned down on the chair and dropped the map on the desk, looking down at it. It appeared the route went through various peculiar places. He raised an eyebrow at the route Vesh compiled. "Why would I ever want to take a dangerous criminal through there?" He muttered tracing the line with his eyes. "It's not even faster to go through Deadman's Gorge. If it was, then maybe… But it adds almost half a day to the trip."
He lifted his left hand to follow the route further with his index finger on the mark. Continuing to follow he began to adjust the route accordingly. But then he paused, glancing at the back of his hand.
He touched it with his right hand. There was an almost 'creeping' blackness crawling from the mark of the Triforce in his hand. It was stationary but there were several small streams running toward his wrist. What was it?
Link's first thought was the black magic used by the murderer. But why would it come from the Triforce? Why would the Triforce be black? It couldn't be the murderer's doing.
"I should ask Zelda… Maybe she knows what it is? She knows more about this Triforce thing than anyone. Maybe I should ask her about the man I've been seeing too. No. She'd think I'm crazy. And she wouldn't be the only one…" He thought and pardoned it. He finished adjusting the route and memorized it during the remainder of the night.
Quickly Link hustled to gather his things and saddle Epona, whilst eating some jerky.
"Not the most nutritional breakfast." He heard from behind him. He twisted to glance over his shoulder seeing Zelda smiling at him.
Oddly she had a crow perched on her right shoulder. "What's with the bird?" He asked her.
As she approached she answered, "This actually isn't a bird. His name is Kon."
"Cone?" Link squinted.
"No! Kon. He's a druid. I want you to take him with you on your trip. He agreed to go, so I think you should take him."
Link stopped cinching Epona and fully turned. "How did you know I was leaving?"
"Well your gear for one. Besides, I coaxed my dad into telling me. You're going on a scouting mission, right? Kon would be useful. He'll be like your eye in the sky." Zelda stated as the 'suspicious' black bird squawked at Link.
"Scouting?" He thought to himself. "…Yeah. I don't know. That's one more mouth to feed. Besides, I don't like the idea of dragging around a shapeshifter that I don't even know. I've never even seen him before."
"I've known Kon for years, he's not very good with crowds and people so he doesn't come to the castle often. I told him you were going to go on a scouting mission and that you're always finding adventure. I asked him to join you for extra protection."
Link crossed his arms. "Protection? I can handle myself." He silently thought after, "If the bird's trustworthy I could use an extra pair of eyes watching the prisoner…"
"He can take care of himself. He's an excellent nature magic user. Take him with you, please?"
"I feel like this got tossed in at the last minute… but fine, I'll take him. Kon right? Wait here then." Link pointed at the ledge on the stall door. The bird quickly flapped over and landed on its perch. Link had already forgotten about his hand since he was wearing his leather gauntlets and the bird Kon added another distraction. He had already returned to fastening his remaining items on Epona's saddle.
"Be safe." Zelda snuck a kiss on Link's cheek. As she trotted away Link eyed her surprised.
He quickly noticed Kon's beady black eyes staring him down.
"What?" He sharply demanded. The black bird jolted its head elsewhere, as if Link wasn't even there.
Epona eyed Kon closely. Her ears were pinned back and her nostrils flared. "I can't say I like him either." Link mumbled patting Epona after checking her girth. He lifted her front legs stretching them out to prevent pinching between the cinch and elbow. Afterwards he led her out of the stall; the crow quickly flapped on to the saddle and perched upon her back.
At the exit of castle town Link was greeted by the royal guard, Vesh, and the king. Between the four guards was the prisoner, Orian. He was gagged and bound.
The Dusken Elf's skin was dark, almost black. His hair was white, and his eyes were bloodlust red. Orian's utter appearance was almost frightening. Link had forgotten how terrifying the Dusk were. He didn't really know much about them, and never really cared to. Link recalled that there was once a great war between Hyrule and Dusk nearly a hundred years ago, and now the balance is ever wavering and the chance of war is always around the corner.
Without warning Vesh informed Link, "You best be off. Clai was found dead nearly an hour ago. Keep a steady eye on this one. He's dangerous and always scheming. Now go."
Just like that they passed on Orian. The small group was already departing, having handed Link the chain connected to Orian's arms. Link wrapped the end of the chain around the horn of Epona's saddle and hopped up on her back. Kon had already made himself comfy on Link's soldier. Link ignored the bird and turned his head down toward the silent Dusk.
"Let's go."
