Now then… Maka could detect souls. So we couldn't just follow them. Either we had to follow at a large distance and risk losing them or we'd have to figure out where they were going and once that was done we'd find Arachne ourselves. End of story. But how exactly could we do that? I guess that rumors was where we'd have to start. First we headed back home. We'd have to be ready when we got our lead. However when we got there no sooner we were surprised by the voice calling to us. We slowly approached the mirror in the main hall. Death stood, as ever. I stayed a decent distance away. My silence left the two girls to speak.
"Yes?" Liz asked.
"I am afraid that I need the three of you back at the school"
"Oh. Um what for?" Liz asked.
"This cannot be spoken of just now. Please come to the Deathroom."
I looked away and started walking. The girls quickly followed me. The image in the mirror faded and was replaced with the reflection of the room.
"What do you think he wants?"
"How should I know? It's not like I'm going anyway."
"What? But he expects us to-"
"I don't care. I won't go there. As far as I know he's preparing to cast me to the side like he did the brother we found out about before."
"Kid… I don't think that he's going to do that." Liz responded carefully.
"Psh. He practically ignores me for years and he only speaks to me when he needs a tool. So maybe I don't want to do that anymore."
"... Kid… Just what do you plan on doing? If we don't go he'll send someone to find us and escort us there anyway."
"If we're quick enough we can make it out before then."
"But he'll know where we're going."
"We don't even know where we're going so I'm sure that won't be a problem."
"So we're not going to follow them?"
"We're not going to be spies?!"
"They're long gone by now. We'd never find them. I think that I'll just… Take a little vacation."
"What?"
"What?! We get to have a vacation?! Yay! No school!"
"Kid, I don't think that's such a good idea. Your father-"
Kid whipped around to face her. "Don't you dare speak a word to me about Death right now."
Liz was taken aback by the harshness of the tone. Kid wasn't acting as she knew him. He was practically winging everything which wasn't even close to normal. The lack of properness in his tone. The lack of care for the world around him. He planned things out and refused to stray from the carefully laid out plan and now… This just wasn't right. And leaving without concern for the symmetry of the house was way off. All of this was so different from the Kid they knew that it was kind of scaring her.
Kid slowly turned to face the door after making sure that what he had said got across. "Six minutes."
"Six… minutes?" Liz mimicked in confusion and worry.
"One to decide if you're coming. Two to decide what you want to take that you can carry. Three to get it packed and get down here. Now go."
Patty didn't hesitate. She dashed down the hall and up the stairs shouting something about a vacation. Liz on the other hand took second. Kid didn't move to look at her. She bit her lip and took a step back. She couldn't just let him go wherever with just Patty. With Patty being Patty and Kid acting like this they needed someone who was levelheaded. She turned and bolted up the staircase. She wouldn't abandon him just because he was acting like this. He needed them more than ever now in her opinion. So she would go on this little adventure of his and she would figure out what was going on… and she would fix it. She wouldn't let him sink any lower into this cold state. She help him and get him back home before things got too bad and she'd explain it to his father and he'd understand… Right? Especially since whatever was going on had to do with him. Then everything would be ok again. She'd make sure of it because… they were a family now.
Liz rushed into her bedroom. She started going through things. Whatever money she had she stuffed into her pocket and then she grabbed the purse that she had gotten as a gift from Patty last year as a birthday gift. She stuffed in what makeup she could fit into her pockets first since she would need the purse for what clothes she could fit into it. She filled her pockets quickly, not that she expected much to actually fit. Then she picked out a couple of t-shirts and folded them tightly and placed them into the purse. The she placed in some sweatpants she never wore since jeans would take up too much space. Next was a bra and then she fit in the compact with the mirror and the brush. She scanned the area from anything else that she might need. That was when Patty ran in with her little bag strapped to her back. Mr. Spot's leg peeking out the top. She walked over and turned her sister before stuffing the leg in and pulling on the straps to close it.
"Lets go raid the kitchen, Patty."
"Ok!"
Liz followed her sister into the kitchen where they stuck what snacks they could into what space they had left in Patty's bag and her purse. As expected more was fit into Patty's bag. How much time did they have left?
"Ready, Patty?"
"Yeah, lets go."
Liz walked out to the front door with Patty at her side. The smile Patty wore was broad as usual. She was always so happy go lucky. Kid stood in very much the same spot. A backpack on his back and Beelzebub in his hand. Lucky he could just spawn that thing from his hand otherwise they'd have more to carry. Kid looked back.
"Ready?"
The girls nodded.
What are you doing Kid?!
