Thank God, Lissa didn't insist on coming here with me. She doesn't want to but, "for you, to feel better", she said. She's right, I feel awful coming here. I don't even know what to say to her. "Happy birthday" and go? Why did I even come here...
"Wait in here." a guardian said to me and my two guards. It's the meeting cell. A small room with a table and two chairs and white walls all around it.
I take a seat and nervously wait for my aunt to come. I haven't seen her since the day after Lissa's coronation. When she was still in the royal cells. We didn't talk much. I didn't want to.
First I was an outcast because of my strigoi parents, now I am because of the person who raised me wanted to kill the woman I love. Why did I come here again?
Lissa said I shouldn't punish myself for things I didn't do...
"Christian." Tasha said when she saw me "Didn't expect you to visit." she sat on the chair opposite mine, "Still, you are the only one who would visit." she smiled.
"Happy birthday." I said. I don't know what else to say.
"Thank you." she said. And I see her eyes began to wet. "Tell me, how are you."
"It's been a little tough lately, but not really for me, so I'm fine. And you?"
"How do you think I am? Here in prison..."
"You're making a victim of yourself, but we all know you are not here for nothing." I burst. I still didn't tell her what I think about her doings. Maybe now is the time.
"Everybody is making Rose the poor girl that was a victim of my plan, but nobody knows that she also deserves it. "
"With what?" I say slowly, carefully, to make her hear those words well.
"She also killed. She killed Victor. And she stole my happiness."
"Are you serious?" I smile. "Your reasons for Rose deserving the prison is because Dimitri choose her instead of you?" I laugh with face in my hands and shaking my head. No, she didn't say that. That's insane. She's insane.
"Dimitri was meant to be with me!" she hit the table with her handcuffed hands.
"It's okay." I raised my hand to show my guards to not react on that.
"Dimitri and I would be perfect for eachother. He would be my guardian and I would be his moroi. I wouldn't care if we wouldn't be both moroi. I wouldn't care about anyone talking about us. We would have eachother and that's enough for me. It would be enough for him too, if that brat wouldn't come in the way!" she continued. "And we would have a family, children. He wants a family. Rose can't give him that." she said proud.
"Well, you're wrong." I say leaning closer to her.
"What is that supposed to mean?" she asks confused.
"Rose is pregnant." I say.
"She cheated on him?" she laughs. "Oh, Rosemarie..."
"No. She didn't. She wouldn't."
"And how, please tell me, you know that? she asks confidently.
"I know her." I said. I wish I could have the proof but...
Tasha laughed loudly and long. "But darling, you knew me too, right? And you didn't expect all of this from me, did you?" she calmed down now, "Oh, my lovely Christian... always looking the good in everybody, while all of them were stepping on you for the decisions your parents took."
"Stop it. You don't regret any of your doings?" I ask her.
"No, I don't. Dimka is hurt."
"You almost killed the woman I love."
"She isn't the one, Christian. Are you happy?" That made me think.
Lissa and I rarely had the time for ourselves. She was working, or dealing with Rose, or dealing with Jill, or she was tired. It's not the life I wanted for us.
After the moment of silence Tasha knew I was thinking about what she said.
"I know this is not what you wanted..."
"I love Lissa."
"Oh, I know... And not just because of you, Christian. She was too young to be the Queen. That throne is supposed to be mine. I, am the right person for deciding the right use of moroi magic. And dhampir education. Not an eighteen year old!"
"You're sick." I say. She doesn't care about lives. She just wants to get her way no matter what.
"Maybe. Maybe I am." now she leans closer, "but I'm still the only one who's thinking it with a clear head. Times changed, not everything is in rainbows anymore. And I'm going to be the one, who is going to make the rules right."
"Yeah, you really can do much in this prison." I say it rudely. She's getting me angry.
She leans to my ear and whispers, "We are going to see about that." then gives me a kiss that burns on my skin because the things she said.
"I'm leaving." I stand up and can't wait to breathe fresh air. She is still sitting in that chair and saying things I can't hear.
"Christian!" she yells after me. I turn around and look through iron bars.
"Don't worry, darling. I don't hate you for the things you said here. We're alone in this anyways. Times are going to change for us, on better, soon , you'll see." I can't listen to this anymore. I start walking down the hallway.
"Say hi, to everyone!" she laughs behind me.
Driving home makes me want to throw up. I can't stop thinking about what Tasha said. "We are going to see about that" is echoing in my head. I can't keep calm. I'm worried.
"Don't worry mister Ozera. She can't get out of the prison. She is well secured." guardian Tim tried to calm me down. That's what everyone else thought about Robert Doru. And now he's out chasing Rose. But I don't think Tasha is going to turn herself into a strigoi. She despises them. That doesn't calm me down. I'm worried about everyones' safety.
Should I tell that to Lissa? Should I worry her too? No. Tim is right. I don't believe Tasha is going to escape the prison. I'm not telling Lissa anything. Not now, when all this is happening...
"Christian, you're back!" Lissa came and kissed me. "How was it?"
"I don't want to talk about it now... I was thinking..."
On my way home I was also thinking about Tasha asking me if I was happy with the way Lissa and I live. I admit that I expected another way of life for us. I admit that I want to spend more time with her but those busy times will past. And I love Lissa more than anything in the world. I want to spend the rest of my life in her office if it means I'll stay with her. I want to know that she's mine. I already know I'm hers.
My hands start to sweat and I think I start to become red in my face.
"Lissa... I..."
"Christian is something wrong?" she asks.
"No. Lissa you know I love you right?"
"Of course. We tell it each other every day." she smiles.
"Okay. Um..." I clear my throat, "I want you to really know it, and I want to create a family with you and... I... I am being a dick not preparing a speech." I put my hand in my pocket, "I'm sorry, I know this is supposed to be something special but your schedule is full and I can't wait so-"
"Christian your hand!" Lissa yells, takes a glass of water from her table and spills it on my hand. I guess I was too nervous and my hand burned the box I wanted to give to Lissa.
"Christian, what is that?" Lissa asks with her hands covering her mouth and I can see her eyes in tears. I smile and hope for an answer...
I think this is the right time now to get down on my knee.
"Oh, God, Christian..." Lissa says tears running down her face.
I take the ring out of the box, take Lissa's hand and say, "Queen Vasilisa Dragomir. Would you do me the honor and become my wife?"
I wait for an answer and finally she nods. I put the ring on her finger and I lift her in the air. I hear guardians clapping behind us but all I see is my future wife.
When I put her down we kiss. And when we stop we put our foreheads together. "I love you too, you jerk. You know I don't like people calling me Vasilisa." we both laugh.
Now I know that she is mine too.
