ROSE
Of course I'm going to see Yeva. If that's her wish... I can't believe that her time already came. Even though the whole family is going to be there, including Dimitri, I will go to see her one last time.
"Our nephews remember?" Oksana turned around while Ivan, Yulian and I were sitting in the back seats of the car. All of us nodded.
The road was pretty long. But when we finally came I began to be nervous.
Nervous of seeing Dimitri.
"Right after you finish talking, I'm afraid we'll have to go." Ivan said. "It's too crowded today."
"I think I'll stay here a little longer..." Oksana said. I can see she's upset. Oksana and Mark are close to the Belikov family. They were one of the rare people that accepted Mark and Oksana as a married couple.
We were taking an elevator and on the way out of it I saw Paul carrying coffee to his family.
"Hey Paul!" I call him. He turns around and gives me a slight smile. He waits for us to come to him and then we walk down the hall.
"How is she?" Mark asks him.
"Weak." Paul answers.
On the corner I get a surprise. I guess I was right about Dimitri. He did forget about me already.
He is hugging a dhampir woman right in front of Yeva's room.
Oh the feeling... the feeling of someone you love the most, hugging someone else right in front of your eyes... like a tank driving over my body multiple times.
The wish of kicking both of them... I swear I would do it if I wouldn't be pregnant right now.
I couldn't see that bitch's face because she was showing me her back. Two Molnija marks...
"I care..." Yulian repeated Dimitri's words.
"Shut up." I said back.
"Hello." I say when I come closer. Dimitri opened his eyes and broke his embrace with the woman. He was just staring from one to another.
"So... that's awkward." I smile. "Won't you introduce us?"
"What are you doing here?" he asked.
"Oh, lets not be rude." I tell him. "You know... you'll get that a lot from him... especially if you're younger than him. Then... then you will have lots of lame conversations about being childish and irresponsible and-"
"Don't worry I think I know him well enough." the woman said looking confused. "Kaya." she offered me a hand. I didn't give her mine.
"Rose" I just said.
"Rose..." then she looked at Dimitri "you are that Rose." she gave me a look like she remembered something.
"You still didn't tell me the reason why you're here." Dimitri said.
"Your family didn't tell you? Your grandmother wants to see me."
That was when Olena and Karolina came out of the room. They both looked very tired and sad. Their faces were red from crying.
"Rose, finally." Olena said. "I think all of us need to enter. She hasn't got much time left." she said on the edge of tears.
And we did. All of us came in. Except for Kaya, Yulian and Ivan. They didn't know her that well. When we came in, Yeva had her eyes closed. She looked weak and pale. I felt this huge sorrow seeing her like this.
Victoria was sitting on a sofa with baby Sofia in her arms and Zoya beside her half asleep.
Yeva opened her eyes. And all of us looked at her. But her look stopped on me. She gave me a small smile and with her hand she showed me to come closer to her. I walked next to Yeva. Her hand was still up, I took it and kissed it.
"I was wondering where were you... When Dimka... came home..." she talked heavily. I thought that she's going to judge me as everyone else. It looks like they didn't tell her. Now she looked at my stomach. She smiled.
"Why nobody told me that Dimka is going to be a father?" she asked and looked at the family standing in front of her. Then the silence started. Nobody knew what to say.
I was surprised that she didn't already know about my pregnancy even though they didn't tell her anything. She has that sixth sense… had. She was probably too sick and weak to be able to see those things...
"It was a surprise." Karolina smiled. Then I didn't know what to say anymore. I just smiled.
"What... a lovely surprise." she said. "What is it going to be a boy, a girl?"
"I don't know." I said. "I'm keeping that a surprise." I tried to stay strong but I couldn't help myself. She talked to me about my baby without judging me and without thinking I cheated on Dimitri. I couldn't keep my tears away.
She believes. She believes that Dimitri and I can have a child together. She didn't ask how, she just believed. She believed I wouldn't cheat on him. She believed me. What do they have to say on that?
Last time, she tested me, acted like she didn't know English and that really didn't make me like her. Now, she is the only one from Belikov family that doesn't think I'm a cheating bitch. Why does she have to go? Why her?
"I'm a little disappointed... that I didn't have the chance to see you two getting married..." she looked at Dimitri now. "You picked the right one... Take good care of her and the baby."
How I wished that Dimitri would nod. But he only looked at me. His eyes were filled with tears.
Then Yeva started coughing. I knew she didn't have much time anymore.
"Thank you. For everything." Thank you for those words. Was what I wanted to say.
"No. Don't cry... It will make your baby sad too." I tried. But I am too sad because she will be gone. I wish my child would meet her. Because she is a great and wise woman.
"Can I?" she asked. I knew she wanted to touch my stomach.
"Of course." and I came closer to her. Her touch made me feel warm, even though her hand was already cold.
She closed her eyes.
"Yeva?" I cried. No. She can't be gone already. But the strange thing was that her hand didn't drop.
"I'm not gone... yet." she said. I smiled from relief. Then she said something in Russian, I didn't understand. Maybe she's so weak that she forgot English.
Her breathing started to be harder and deeper. She was closing her eyes and opening them again, but she was smiling. Her smile was the only thing that kept me from falling down and cry.
"Dimka..." she whispered while she was coughing. Dimitri rushed and fell on his knees. He took her other hand.
"Yes?" he whispered.
Yeva said something in Russian again. But that affected Dimitri a lot. He looked at her with his eyes wide open, tears running down his cheeks. Yeva looked toward the crowd of people standing in front of her, smiled widely, and closed her eyes.
But now her hands did drop from my stomach. She died. She's gone.
The whole room was crying and hugging and all those sad faces... It's something horrible to see. I kissed her hand again and looked at Dimitri. Dimitri cried like a child hugging his dead grandmother. I wish I could hug him right now and make him know that I'm there for him.
But he moved on.
Since everyone still thought I was the cheater, I started to leave the room. On my way out I stopped and told the family how much I'm sorry for their loss.
When I came out of the room Ivan and Yulian were sitting on chairs. Ivan saw me and stood up. I ran to him and hugged him. I needed it. I started crying and I made his T-shirt all wet.
Brothers helped me to sit down.
"Do you want me to bring you anything?" Ivan asked.
"No. Just stay here. Please."
Yulian's phone started ringing. He walked to the windows to take the call.
"Do you want us to leave?" Ivan asked.
"Rose?" Yulian called. He had a strange look on his face. "This phone call... it's for you." he said passing the phone to me. Who would want to talk to me? From Yulian's phone... My mother, or father?
I walk to him and take the phone.
"Hello?"
"SAY IT!" I hear a yell on the other side. "R..Rose?"
"Lissa?" It was her voice. But all terrified and scared. "LISSA?!" I ask one more time when there was no answer.
"Rosemarie." Oh no.
Robert.
I don't know what to say. Robert has Lissa. What am I going to do? What am I supposed to do?
"Won't you say hi to me?" he laughed.
"Robert, if you hurt her, I swear..."
"You swear what? That you will kill me? In your condition, I don't think so." he said. "Look. Game over. I can only offer you an exchange. You for the Queen and her fiance." Fiance?
"But... I'm pregnant."
"So? I mean... if you don't want to accept the offer..." then I heard Lissa screaming.
"NO! No, don't hurt her. Leave her alone!" I yell at the phone. "I accept the offer."
That's the only thing I can do right now. I'll came up with a plan later.
"Alright then. I'll send you the address. Come alone." he said in a cold voice. Then he ended the call.
"What was that?!" Ivan said all panicked. "I'll call Oksana and Mark."
"No."
"What no? Are you crazy?"
"He has his rules. If I break his rules, he'll kill them both. Don't call them."
Phone ringed with a message. The address. I have time till midnight. Okay. I need to come up with a plan. I'll do it on my way there.
"I need to go."
"You're not going anywhere."
"Look! It's me or The Queen. Let me go, or you two are going to be responsible of Queen's death." They were shaking their heads but they knew there was no other way. I quickly walked down the hallway.
While the elevator doors were closing I heard screaming in the hallway.
"Rose!" Dimitri was calling for me. I have to get out of here quickly. Brothers will tell them what I'm planning to do.
I have to save Lissa. And Christian. But Lissa… We've been through so much together, I can't hate her forever for freezing there in hospital room when we found out that I was pregnant. After all, dhampir pregnancy is known as impossible. Well until a Dhampir was turned back from being a Strigoi that is. We know that now.
She didn't deny the possibility of my baby being Dimitri's. She just didn't know what to say…
I wish that I would still have that bond thing right now to know if she's okay. I want to say that I love her and that I'm coming for her… I would apologize and repeat over and over again that everything is going to be okay. Even if I wouldn't believe that… I would say that to her.
I was running down the street looking for a taxi. I wave to the cab and it stops. I sit into it and tell the address to the driver.
When the cab moves I feel the relief of Dimitri not catching me.
The cab stops and I hit the seat in front of me. Driver was cursing in Russian loudly and when I look what made him stop, it made me swear too.
Dimitri jumped in front of the car. Now he sits next to me in the back seat.
The driver continues to curse but Dimitri shuts him up.
Then he turns to me "Did you really think... ARE YOU CRAZY?!" Dimitri yelled, breathing heavily.
