ROSE
Strigoi grabs me by my arms and I can feel his breath on my neck. Instead of biting me, I hear it's loud scream. It made me scream too.
And instead of me being already dead, the grip loosened and strigoi falls down the stairs.
Standing in front of me is Dimitri.
I jump in his arms and we hug. I was never so glad to see him before. He saved me. He saved us. He hugged me strongly but still gently, because of my stomach. He was smoothing my hair with his fingers and I felt his heavy breathing blowing my hair. It was hard to breathe for me too. I thought I won't do that ever again.
"I love you too." he whispered. He heard me say it when he was getting behind it's back to kill the strigoi. I'm glad he did hear me.
I started to cry. I couldn't help myself. I was so happy to be saved. So happy to be saved by him.
"Are you alright?" he asked me and started to check if I have any bruises. "And the baby?" he moved his hand on my stomach. "Are you both alright?"
I nodded. I had some bruises on my hands and my back hurt from the fall but other than that, I was fine.
Dimitri has cuts on his face and his leg is bleeding but he looks fine. Thank God.
"Where are Lissa and others?" I immediately ask him.
"Out."
"Are they okay?"
"Cuts, bruises, tired and some dhampir have broken bones."
"How are you?"
"Fine. Now let's get out." he brushed my tears away.
I didn't want to leave. Not yet. Dimitri helped me downstairs where Mark was laying. His eyes were still open.
Dimitri and I kneeled beside him. His blood was all around him.
"Do you think that Oksana already knows?" I asked him.
"I don't know, she probably already sensed it."
I closed Mark's eyes gently with my hand.
I'm so sorry for Oksana and Mark. They were so in love. How they communicated through bond, how they looked at each other every day... They never fought, they always agreed in everything. They were perfect for each other.
"Who else did we lose?" I asked.
"One of Kaya's Guardians and Ivan Konnikov."
"We can't leave them here."
"Of course. We are going to tell their families and ask what do they wish for them."
"Ivan only has his brother. And Yulian is going to stay with us. I won't let him go like this. Alone. I promised."
When we came out it was still dark. But I saw royal guardians taking care of everyone.
I recognized Adrian, Mikhail and Mia. Adrian was helping in curing wounds, Mikhail was with Sonya and Mia was talking to Yulian. She better not make him feel worse than he already is.
Kaya came to us. "Stefan couldn't make it. He just passed away." she said holding one hand on her forehead and in other she had a phone.
"I'm sorry." I said.
"I'm glad that you are okay." Kaya said to me.
"Thank you."
Kaya's phone started ringing. She answered and walked away telling something to someone called Alexander. I didn't understand what it was because she was saying it in Russian. But I'm sure that she is explaining that two of her guardians are dead.
"Rose!"
Someone touched my shoulder. Sydney.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah. But I do need to sit down a bit."
Dimitri went to talk with other guardians about the fight, strigoi and the victims. Sydney and I went to sit in the back of a van. She covered me with a blanket and took my hands. She was whipping the blood and dirt off them.
"Are you in the last month?"
"Yes." I smiled. "What are you doing here?"
"Need to take care of strigoi bodies. Again, cleaning the mess you made." she smiled.
"I didn't kill any of them this time."
"Little dhampir. Let me take care of this." Adrian came and took my hands.
"No, go help others. Don't use your energy on these small bruises." His eyes were closed. That meant, that he didn't listen to me.
"We need to make sure your baby is fine." he said when he opened his eyes back. "Who is your friend?"
"I'm not her friend." she said. Alchemists and vampires mustn't have any kind of friendship. Only business.
Adrian came closer and moved Sydney's hair from her cheek. He saw alchemists mark and realized what was she talking about.
"I understand." he smiled. "Adrian Ivashkov." he offered her a hand.
"Sydney." she said and they shook hands.
"Right you are that girl that helped Rose with the hiding and stuff."
I don't know why but this is starting to feel awkward. Is he flirting with her?
"Where are Lissa and Christian?" I ask to break the silence.
"We took care of them first and now, they are resting in one of the vans." he said still looking at Sydney.
I went away looking for Lissa.
Five vans were parked. I knock on the first one.
"Lissa?"
And no answer. Wait... If Lissa would be in any van there would be guardians protecting it. Where is she?
"Rosemarie!" Lissa ran to me.
She wanted to hug me but she stopped not knowing if she can.
"Come here." I smile and pull her closer. "I'm pregnant. That doesn't mean that I'm fragile like glass."
"Rose, I'm so sorry. I wanted to come here to see you. And suddenly there was an attack..."
"Don't apologize... There's nothing to apologize for."
"Lissa, we are ready to go." Dimitri came closer.
"You..." Lissa started and I know what she was pointing at.
"Lissa... he just saved my life, give him a break." I smiled. "Christian how are your hands?" I remembered how bloody his hands were. He showed me.
His hands were cured but small marks were still shown. "The damage was too big, to totally disappear." he said.
Lissa, Christian, Yulian, Oksana, Dimitri and me are sitting in the livingroom. Oksana is crying and mourning in my arms. Tears are in everyones' eyes.
"What am I going to do now?" Oksana said when she calmed down enough to be able to speak.
Instead of telling her something I hugged her with more force. The truth is, I don't know what to say. It's all going to be okay?
Her husband died. There are no words that will make it better... not now. I remember when I had to leave Dimitri there in the cave with other strigoi. Not knowing if he's dead, a strigoi or still dying and waiting for me to come for him.
No words would make me feel better then to see him or that someone would tell me the truth. Mason did.
I feel guilty. If I would be more careful and not killed Victor... all of this wouldn't happen...
"It's not your fault." Oksana whispers. She heard my thoughts.
"But..." I say.
"No. We are happy that we could have you here, in our home. And I'm so happy that you and your baby are safe."
"Oh my... You are pregnant." I heard Lissa say. I turn around confused and see that she was looking at Oksana. The whole room was staring at Lissa and Oksana.
"What?" I ask now looking at Oksana to see her expression.
"You are improving at spirit, your Majesty." she said.
"What? No..." I shake head with hands on my mouth. "Mark..." I feel so bad right now.
"Mark knew." Oksana said.
"But why didn't you tell us?" I ask louder now. I'm getting through the shock right now.
"Because we know you, Rose. You would never let him go in a battle knowing how much we wanted this child."
"Of course not!"
"But we all knew that we needed more guardians."
"Oh, my God! I just took the father from your child! And... I took a brother..." I looked at Yulian. He was sitting on the sofa next to Christian and Lissa. "And other two guardians... they probably had a family, of course they had a family!"
Dimitri saw my desperation and kneeled beside me. "And Victoria. Are Victoria's wounds going to heal? Is she going to be fine? Or did I kill her too... please don't tell me that-"
"Rose, calm down. Victoria is fine. Adrian cured her." Dimitri said.
"Mark wanted to be there for you." Oksana takes a hold of my both hands. "We both wanted him to be there. And if it wasn't for him... You wouldn't be here right now. I am proud of him."
"Are you going to be fine?" I asked. What a stupid question to ask right now. But I hoped for her to say "yes".
"It's going to be hard. Very hard. But I'm going to be strong for this miracle that I hope is going to be just like him."
We hug and both start crying again.
