DIMITRI

It's been a week after Mark's, Ivan's and grandmother's funeral and we are preparing and packing our stuff to go back to Court. Yulian has accepted to come with us, but Oksana didn't. She wants to stay here because she wants to raise her child here in the house full of Mark's memories. She says that she will make it through and my family promises to visit her more often.

We just arrived at mom's to check on everybody and to take my stuff.

"Hello!" Paul came running downstairs. He went to hug Rose when he saw her.

"Hi, Paul! Look at you!" Rose said holding his shoulders. "How you've grown up from the last time I saw you."

We all went on the backyard. Christian was playing with Zoya and Paul, Lissa, Rose, Sonya and Karolina were watching them, Victoria was helping mom with bringing juice and I'm sitting with Yulian not really talking much. I don't know what to say. He's silent a lot. Suffering.

"It's so weird now that mother's not yelling at children for being loud." Mom said when she and Victoria brought glasses with orange juice.

"Yeah, and it's time for her war movies that she always wanted to watch, no matter what." Victoria said. "Anyone thirsty?"

But no one came.

"Great, we brought this for nothing." Victoria complained.

"Victoria, don't be so lazy! It's just juice…"

Victoria went to chat with Lissa and others and mom sat down next to me.

"So… How are you and Rose now? After all this…" mom asked. "Are you back together?"

"No. I mean, I don't know." I said. Both mom and me were turned toward the loud crowd.

"Thank God, mother was there to open your stubborn mind." she said and messed my hair up. I didn't say anything back. I did make a mistake that I'll regret forever and I can't describe how sorry I am.

"But I'm not judging you." she continued. "Two dhampirs having a child… It was known as impossible to everybody… And if we think clearly it still can be, because we all know that you are not a normal dhampir, my son." She took my hand when she saw the reaction on my face.

"I know. I know you don't want to be remembered about that horrible time you spent as a strigoi, but you have to reconcile yourself with that. To be honest, there isn't anything bad by being different except the past that is haunting you."

While mom was talking I couldn't stop myself from looking at Rose. She is laughing at Christian's horrible russian accent, and I haven't seen her that calm in a long time.

"You being different, made that blessing possible." she said realizing that I'm looking at Rose and by blessing meaning the child. "You are going to be a father, you are going to have a baby with the women you love so much. You always wanted a family, and there it is, right in front of your eyes."

"Yes, but I don't know if Rose will forgive me. I was horrible to her, mother. I hurt her so much."

"If Rose loves you, really loves you, she will open her mind too, she will see things in your point of view and forgive you. I'm very sure of that." I looked at mom now, and her look gave me some hope that we all needed so much.

"Wow, my legs are killing me." Rose came and sat down with us. "I will take some of this juice."

The juice was closer to me, that's why I gave it to her.

"Thanks." she smiled.

Someone just rang the bell.

"I will get it!" Paul yelled and ran upstairs.

"No Paul! It's probably postman with a package for me, wait!"

"Last time, a postman came and Paul sent him away because he had a box as a package and Paul thought it was a bomb. But it was actually cosmetics pack for Victoria. He watches action movies too much." my mother said and rolled her eyes.

"Whoa." Rose said.

"Are you okay?" I asked. It looked like she was in pain.

"Mhm," Rose nodded, "these kicks are getting stronger."

"Of, course they are, darling. The baby is getting bored." Mom smiled. Rose had her eyes closed with her hands holding the stomach, like she was waiting it to stop.

"And kicks are longer." then she opened her eyes and saw me staring at her. But I didn't look away. "Do you want... Come closer." she said to me.

And I did. I moved to a seat next to her, she took my hand and put it on the spot where she feels those kicks. At first I didn't feel anything.

Oh, there's the kick.

I feel a kick in a shape of a small leg. I flinch and it made us both smile.

After the pastry we ate Rose wanted to go for a walk with me, Lissa and Christian. She wanted to show Baia to the royal couple. After a long discussion we were allowed to go alone, without any other guardians going after us.

I have shown them the park where Victoria went swimming with ducks in the pond once, streets where I used to play with other friends when I was younger, church the main place where people gather. Many kids brought flowers to Lissa and cheered at her when we were walking through. Rose got a little tired and we decided to go in a restaurant.

"Honestly… even though my first days in Russia weren't so great, I'm not looking forward to going back on Court. People here are amazing. Oh, and your family..." she said looking at me, "They are wonderful."

"Yeah, Christian really caught up with those kids." Rose said.

"What? They loved what I could do with fire."

"No, I didn't say anything. I think you even might be able to babysit my child."

"And? Did I pass the test?"

"Hmm… Yeah, without that fire thing." we all laugh, Christian's laugh is sarcastic though.

We were just finishing up and I go to pay before we go home.

When I'm done I start to walk down the empty hallway when suddenly, I hear footsteps behind me. I turn around and see the man I spent so many time hating for nothing. He was in Ohio and he probably just found out what was happening when he wasn't here. First he stopped and just stared at me but then he decided to come closer.

"Dimitri... Hi." he said with his hands in pockets.

"Good morning." I smiled.

"I heard that Rose is pregnant. Dimitri I would never..." he started.

"I know Theo. I believe..."

"No. Let me finish, please." he stopped me. "I would never look at taken woman in that way. I never look a woman in that way. And Rose loves you. She would never cheat on you. I know it sounds impossible but..." he was talking and I didn't want to listen but somehow I kept him going.

"And I would never do this to you Dimitri. Because I want you to be happy." Okay... what is he pointing out?

"Because... because I love you." And all of the sudden I feel his lips on mine and I can't move.
