Chapter Four
We've been running so long and so fast that we didn't see as the landscape has changed its view. The horizon went deep pink mergering into more lighter colour, as soon as the sun has risen. A panoramic view of a picturesque land was overwhelming, making you forget about the routine matters as you get further and further into this dream full of absolute perfections.
Memories of childhood is flashing behind my eyes. In front of where I stand is laying the great sea of the north. Briefly I shut my eyes, while my ears were listening to the sound of the calm sea. It keeps distracting me certainly; my imagination's playing up with me, drawing briskly, from time to time, very different and then slowly, shape pictures of me as bird. Dreamily or not? I could fly across the sea, just be free. Freedom. I can feel it, as If I lost the gravity: my feet weren't torn and heavy anymore, they resemble the fragile feather clouds and my arms were graciously stretched out, drifting with the white weightless cumuluses. Cumulus obscured my view of the sky above, with great long contrails underlining my curiousity.
As they lay to the ground, the sea becomes more smoothly, turning into one of the softest lulabies. No words have been said. The silence became somehow comfortable to bear with. Therefore any attempts to start talking, delicately were prevented due to the fact that the presence of each other was enough...
"This place's always been unspoiled," Brendan confided. "It keeps secrets, loads of secrets and memories..." He muttered under his breath.
"It's lovely" Steven breathed and looked up at him, smiling in such a way that Brendan's stomach flipped. Sometimes one person suddenly can change the attitude to something you'd thought of unpleasant and make it place memorable for the rest of your life. Surprisingly so, isn't it?
There was a silence for a while where they just smiled at each other, before Steven grinned, lying back down on the sand and pulling Brendan down beside him.
"What are you thinking of?"
"I used to come here, watching as the breeze was playing with the sand and...water.. the sound...it calmed me down. Everything... about this place..." He paused, looking around. "It gave me strength, when I needed it the most." He laughed sadly.
"Why don't you just tell me everything? I know you, Bren, there's something that's bothering you. I'm not stupid, I see the way you..."
Brendan's expression was soft as he moved up his hands to Steven's face, brushing sweet cheeks with his fingertips. "I don't think so. Never have." He leant in to kiss him softly. "Maybe with time." He smiled and closed his eyes.
"But why not earlier?" Steven sighed. Things could have been so much easier it seemed. We could've escaped so many things."
"We still can." He couldn't deny the fact that it was true. The way he's dismissed his feelings in the past, has pushed away the ones he cared for the most. But he has changed, he's overcome this. He's changed - the words tasted so perfectly, so rightly now.
"I've changed, I've changed..."
Steven smiled and laid his head back on Brendan's lap, running fingers through his lovers hair. "I know."
They lay together for a quite long time, the warmth of the sun soothing merely their faces.
"Brendan?"
"Umm" He sat up, looking up at him.
Steven glanced once at the sea, then back at him smiling sheepishly. It took several minutes before Brendan looked at the same direction to comprehend it. Nodded slowly taking that as invitation, then playfully rolled over onto his innocent as ever lover, finding his lips with his own demanding. It wasn't brief as he thought when purposely Steven became nipping slightly at his bottom lip as Brendan found himself melting back into boy's embrace.
They would momentarily forget how to breath and never parted, but Brendan pushed him gently back up onto his feet when he evidently thought Steven had become a little too breathless, smirking slightly at the thought of finding rather attractive staying here for a while then going straight to the cold water.
"Well, shall we?" Brendan gestured to the sight of swelling sea.
"Fine." He rolled his eyes and began stripping off his clothes immediately, muttering under his breath.
He very reluctantly allowed himself to be led to the edge. But that's it. He didn't move any longer as if he was waiting for something to happen patiently.
"Go on" Brendan urged. "It's not so cold as you might think"
Steven frowned and stepped into the water, shivering. He scowled as if the thousand blades had gone into his chest. "Bren?"
Brendan grinned, getting rid of his boots and taking off his breeches and shirt and then run to the lonely figure trembling in splashing waves.
"What took you so long?" Steven asked, panicking.
Brendan took his hands in his own, turning them over and kissing gently his palms. "I will follow you whenever you go" He smiled warmly. "Don't be scared I'm right behind your back" He whispered firmly into Steven's ear, tangling his arms around boy's waist. "I love you."
"I love you too." Steven said, enterlacing their fingers, as they moved through the water together.
Therefore, it was rightly so, it felt like the nature itself wanted to seal their fates.
