A/N: Hey everyone! So I know it's been a while since I've updated anything. Life has gotten really busy again and well, I've been in a funk. I am trying desperately to get this story done and off my list of things to do but every time I sit down and try to get to work, I get distracted. My mind really isn't in the game right now. I hope to dust things off and get back to work very soon. So I want to thank you for you patience and I promise there will be more.
For now, I offer you a Danny rant to put Violet in her place. It's a peace offering.
Chapter 12: The Ways of the World
Once the crime scene was locked down with investigators, HPD officers, and the appropriate calls were made, Danny and Steve headed back to the office where Kono, Chin and Violet were still hard at work – Toast was there too and he looked to be the only one dealing with the situation in a calm and collected manner. He was high, of course, so he would be dealing well until the drugs wore off.
Danny and Steve turned a blind eye, Violet was a little less optimistic about having the stoner around all the time.
"He's our friend, and he's brilliant," Steve warned and silenced her for good
It was late in the evening, no news had reached any of them from the hospital and they were still scratching their heads about how Goldstein could have escaped. The jungle was thick and uncharted all the way around the cinderblock structure and in the dark it was nearly impossible for any of them to really find anything without light. The investigation was at a stand still – on their end – until answers could be found and investigations could be completed.
Making the call, and because of labour laws, Steve sent his team home - though most of them didn't get a whole lot of sleep, and Violet didn't know that there were a pair of undercover officers following her every move, but it was a necessary protocol when Danny's spidey-sense were tingling. Nothing else could be done, so the best course of action was to rest, think, and be ready to go at the break of dawn. It wasn't a long break, but it was a break none the less and everyone needed it.
The next morning Steve and Danny walked back into the office together - Kono, Chin and Violet were already hard at work as phones rang and digital information manifested itself on the computer screens all around the room.
Toast sat quietly in a corner with his laptop. He was oblivious - or seemingly so - to the rest of the investigations that was going on around. Danny and Steve whispered to one another as they walked in, and they were certain that Toast hadn't left that spot all night. He worse the same clothes and the same expression of concentration, as he had when they'd left him. He had followed them out of the building, they remembered that, but he probably snuck back in after a toke in an ally down the street.
"So..." Violet asked as she jumped forward at the sight of the two leading investigators - leading in her mind. "What did Lydia say? What did you find? Did you catch any breaks?" she asked and her words were almost as quickly spoken as Danny's rants.
"Lydia was nearly dead when we found her. She didn't say much of anything, we haven't gotten word from the hospital yet, hell, we haven't even had a cup of coffee yet." Danny scolded.
"But you're going to the hospital, right, and as soon as she can speak to you, you'll question her?"
"No, we'll talk to Violet when she's ready to talk, if she's all right. She's the victim here. She has been through enough. We know who we are looking for - we can leave the poor girl alone." Danny stated and he was angry now.
"Our priority, now, will be to locate Goldstein as quickly as possible." Steve said noticing the fire and the rant in Danny's eyes.
"I've hacked into a few nationwide databases and I'm running Goldstein's face through recognition to see if he pops up anywhere on the island and to see if he's done this anywhere else under an alias." Toast spoke up from his corner of the world without looking up from his laptop.
"We have people tearing apart his condo, HPD are questioning faculty and students, and he's been added to the no fly list, and an alert is airing as a special bulletin on all three of the local channels - it will go national at noon today." Chin explained. "The hot lines opened thirty minutes ago, but we've gotten nothing more than 'I know that guy he teaches me history' and cranks who just want the posted reward money."
"The Governor and Lydia's family have heightened security at the hospital but the Shepherd-Greys are very grateful that we've found their daughter and are pleased with Five-O even though Goldstein escaped." Kono finished off the speech as Violet stared wide eyed - she hadn't realized how much had been done while she'd been contacting the families of the other victims.
"We still haven't found any of the other bodies but the neighbours have told us that Goldstein spends a lot of time tending his gardens on the weekends. There was a new one started recently and so the forensics team is going to start there." Steve added his news from the field. "We also have Navy Intelligence doing a sweep of the area looking for heat signatures and mapping. We may not know how he got away, but we should be able to track him now that it's light and we have the specialist out there."
"So what are you going to do? He's still on the loose. You're not just going to stand here - are you?" Violet asked and bounced on the balls of her feet.
"All right, that's enough of that," Danny said with a shake of his head and he threw up his hands. "How old are you, and how long have you actually been a detective?" he asked accusingly.
"Why does that matter now?" Violet asked defensively.
"There is gonna be a fight!" Toast stated excitedly and for the first time he looked up from his laptop.
"There isn't going to be a fight!" Steve said authoritatively. "You are not going to fight." he added in an aside to Danny.
"Why does it matter?" Violet asked again - almost provokingly.
"You calm down!" Steve warned the young woman who was almost as heated as Danny was.
"Because, your inexperience is showing," Danny stated and looked her right in the eyes as if to will her to make the wrong move, "so drop the act because you're not fooling anyone anymore."
Violet's jaw dropped open and she fell silent - unable to defend herself.
"All this macho bullshit you've been pulling has nothing to do with the fact that you are a woman in the field but rather because you are so green you have to cover that up with an authority that you don't have because you haven't earned it yet."
Everyone in the office stopped and stared in awkward silence.
Danny nodded when Violet remained silent. "That's what I though!" he said with authority - he knew he'd been right in his profiling of the young woman. "All right, Rookie, pay attention because you might learn something." Danny stated as the colour rose in Violet's face. "Toast, keep up the search. Map out his movements and link him to as many crimes as you can. There are families out there - probably all over the mainland that deserves some closure. Start with his teaching career and rummage through databases for similar abductions in places he was known to have taught - use his aliases as well."
"It's like a virtual game of hide and seek, and I'm awesome at that!" Toast stated by way of accepting Danny's orders. "I'm gonna need a bag of Tootsie Pops – Stat!"
Danny smirked, "There's a bag in my desk and it's full," He stated, watched as Toast took off running, and then turned to Kono.
"Kono, follow the trail, get on the phone and keep an update from switchboard of the sightings and even the crack callers. It may give you insight into his behaviours and his movements. Send HPD to terrorize the university and ransack his office space. Tell them to bring you anything they find that might link him with other countries or states. It will help Toast narrow his search."
"Right." Kono stated and dashed out off the office and Toast returned to his lap top will a bag under his arm and a lollypop hanging out of the side of his mouth.
"Chin, I want you up at the house and the underground bunker. Talk to the neighbours, see if they've seen any other vehicles other than the ones we know about, also find out how often, during the week, Goldstein would spend time at that property and not at his condo."
"You want to know if his actions have routine or are random?" Chin asked as he read the thoughts in Danny's face.
"Yes, and I want to build a profile of the man, not just his crimes. Does he go up there and garden while the girls are drugged and suffering by candle light? Does he use the house for anything else? Does he have friends? Have they seen him with any of the girls that have gone missing? If there is any suspicious behaviour the neighbours will tell you about it. Look for traffic cams and at ATMs in the area to see if we can't get him on them doing every day things. Take Duke Lukela with you - people will likely remember more with a uniform staring them down."
"Pound the pavement - got it!" Chin said with a smile and headed for his office.
"Steve, get a search and rescue squad out to the jungle as well as your navy buddies." Danny added as he turned to his partner. "We're burning daylight and I want to know how that guy got away without getting caught up with our backup. There has to be something hidden in the jungle and I need you to find it."
"What are you going to do?" Steve asked after he'd nodded his understanding to his partner.
"I'm taking the Rookie on a ride along." Danny said. "Chin, please keep me posted if you get anything!" He added as Chin came back out of his office and headed for the door.
"So you're leaving me alone with all the computers?" Toast asked slyly.
"Yes, behave yourself and don't get anything sticky on the table!" Danny stated. "If anything happens, call me and I'll come running." Danny said to his partner before Steve could ask anymore questions. "Come on Rookie, we've got some learning to do." He added and motioned for Violet to follow him.
Reluctantly she went after Steve waved her on.
5-0
Danny was silent until he had Violet in the car and they were pulling away from the office.
"Was that really necessary?" Violet asked as Danny stewed. "You know, accusing me of all those things. You don't know me. It was a dick move."
"Was your reaction to Five-O on the case really necessary?" Danny huffed miming her tone and displeasure. "From day one I knew you were trying to pull the wool over our eyes and playing the big man on campus when you're really not. So yes, me calling you out and putting you in your place was necessary."
Violet rolled her eyes and was silent again.
"It was necessary," Danny stated, "because if you want to succeed as a detective, you need to watch, learn and be respectful of the men and women who have been doing it longer than you. You may have a talent when it comes to profiling but that's not all it takes and no matter how well you think you are covering it up, those of us who have been around the bend and back again can tell when you're lying." Danny explained - paying more attention to the road than the girl sitting next to him.
"I don't think learning the ropes should be done by a group of people who have everything handed to them on a silver tray." Violet huffed.
Danny slammed on the breaks and pulled over.
"You listen to me, and you listen well," Danny scolded as he turned, frightening Violet, as he stared her down. "I didn't come to work today to have to treat you like you're my twelve year old - so grow the fuck up! You have no idea what we have and what we've lost because of this task-force. One of these days - with an attitude like you've got - you'll learn a lesson but because of your line of work and because you've already pissed off enough people, you may never have the back-up you need to save your life. How many cases like this have you actually solved?" Danny asked - his voice was low, the anger in his eyes was prevalent, and he nearly growled as he asked his questions.
"Twelve," Violet spat.
"And in how many have you saved a victims life?" Danny yelled - fed up with her behaviour and disrespect.
"None," Violet said and lowered her eyes.
"Were you aware that in cases like these where missing people are concerned, Five-O has a sixty percent rate of finding the abductees alive, and do you know why that is? It's because of out immunity and means. Six times out of ten we save lives. There are reasons missing people cases come through our office. You may have a specialty in crimes against women but we're special too, because we save lives. This isn't our first rodeo and you have no right to judge us and our methods, because our methods work - we save lives."
"I'm sorry." Violet whispered and stared out the window.
"You're lucky you've been connect with Five-O for this case. We would have never chosen you, but we've taken you because of the Governor. At least you have the back-up you're going to need - not that you deserve it - and maybe, just maybe, you'll learn something. A guy can hope." Danny huffed.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Violet asked stubbornly aggressive once again.
"It means you have the attitude of a teenager. You're not a very nice person, and if you are going act like that, you don't deserve a place on this task-force or in HPD – for that matter." Danny said with a shake of his head.
Violet glared at him.
"It means I'm going to teach you, because I'm your senior officer right now and I've got collars that you could only dream of. If you were smart - which I'm going to assume that you are - you would have jumped at the change to pick my brain, knowing what I am capable of, but as it is, you only saw the elite title of the Five-O task-force and have dismissed us all because of it. If you learn anything from me, it's that you should smarten up and open your eyes. I really didn't have time to babysit you - and I wasn't even going to give you the time of day because of your attitude - but now here I am. Count your blessings, little girl, because this is going to be boot camp and it's not going to be easy."
"I don't need you to babysit me."
"Rookie, you need a good swift kick in the ass, and because I have a hunch that you are going to need a babysitter, I'm going to be that guy because the rest of my team has better things to do than follow you around. Also, you're a distraction so I had to get you out of the office."
"I really am just a third wheel to you people."
"You brought that on yourself." Danny stated and pulled away from the curb again. "We're grateful for the profile, it was helpful, but you've only been abrasive this whole time. That's not how a good team works, and in this job - knowing what I know now - team work is everything. You need to be able to trust the people you work with because they are the ones that will risk their lives for you."
"I've always been better alone."
"Then you got into the wrong profession if that's what you want. In your short career, how many partners have you gone through?"
"Eight."
"How any were killed in action?"
"None of them, they were all useless and yet they moved on."
"Moved on without you?"
"It was their choice, not mine."
"That's not the point." Danny said with a shake of his head. "My point is, you are the one that gets left behind. You are the one they want to leave alone, and in this line of work, being alone will get you killed. It makes you vulnerable."
"I just never clicked with any of them."
"Did you try to?"
"Not really. I had a job to do. I'm not here to make friends."
"When Steve and I became partners, do you know what he did?"
"No."
"He showed up at my apartment in a cab and told me I was back on a case he'd kicked me off of just the day before, then he stole my keys and drove my car. We actually held each other at gun point in our first meeting until he called the Governor - who had offered him a task-force to lead, which he refused - and he accepted the task-force just to spite me. We were not friends." Danny explained. "How then, was I his first choice for a partner? Even though he took my car keys, got me shot on that first day and I punched him in the face to tell him I didn't like him, he still chose me to be his partner, and I still haven't forgiven him for getting me shot."
"How did you stay with that guy?"
"I stayed with him because he was able to swallow his pride and see that he needed my experience. I stayed because Steve has a skill set that really is beneficial, and I know the benefits of having experienced people on your side. I swallowed my pride, he swallowed his, and we worked together to solve that case. Steve could have left when it was done and he could have gone back to his very prestigious career as a Navy SEAL, but he stayed too." Danny explained. "I've had my share of partners, in my time, but none of them left because of me. Rick was a dirty and unethical cop, so he went to prison. Grace was murdered right before my eyes - I was sitting right next to her and I still feel guilt because I couldn't save her and I should have died too. Peter told me to leave and transfer to Hawaii to be with my daughter because he knew that my daughter was the only thing that would keep me on the straight and narrow path. Mecca was promoted within months of me arriving here in Hawaii but he was my friend from the moment we met even though I was discriminated again by everyone else for being different. His promotion was a long time coming - even before I showed up. Then he went missed and was found dead – Five-O solved that case because Mecca was my friend and I am loyal to my friends. That's when Steve came alone. Like in any good relationship you have to trust your partner. I learned my lesson because of Rick, now you have to learn yours."
"I don't have the personality for a partner."
"Then become a recluse or an accountant, because you won't make it in as a detective."
"Why are you telling me all this? Why do you even care?" Violet asked after another long silence in which she was sure Danny was going to continue his lecture but only stayed uncomfortably silent. "I mean really, when this case is over I'll be out of your hair and you won't have to deal with me ever again."
"We save lives. Five-O, our job is to save lives, so I don't want to see you dead." Danny explained. "Different people have different approaches to different opportunities - it's what makes a good team. Steve is more likely to talk you into thinking you're doing what he want by making you think it was your idea in the first place. I'm more of a this-is-the-way-the-world-works kind of guy, so I'm gonna tell it to you straight and hope that it gets into your head. So here it is – suck it up princess and change your attitude. We believe that Goldstein will come after you because he's already followed you and stalked you. He's been interrupted in his routine, is running scared, and will likely do something rash and inappropriate before he is caught or killed. Now we never wanted this to be a babysitting mission but we don't trust you because you've given us no reason too, but we also don't want to risk your life. So from here on out you will be under direct senior supervision until Goldstein is caught. What that means, is it's you and me, Rookie. Sadly you have no say in this matter - it's an order." Danny finished and glanced sideways at the woman beside him.
"What if I run?" Violet asked defiantly.
"You've been followed by undercover HPD agents for the past two days - since Steve and I watched Goldstein follow you. If you run, they will catch you, and if I say your obstructing justice, they will arrest you and they will throw you in jail to be protected." Danny explained and he told the truth because it had all been planned out this way. "HPD is already on board with the plan and are doing this as a favour to Five-O. They have been tailing us since we left the office. If I were you, I'd sit back and try to learn something from me and be productive while we work, or you could run and land yourself in jail and off the case. What will it be, because now that I've said my peace, I could just hand you over to them and have you hauled away?"
"I'll be cooperative and I'll work." Violet huffed and crossed her arms as she pouted.
"Good, now stop the pouting." Danny stated as his phone rang. "What Steve?"
"Lydia is awake and asking for you." Steve stated over the phone.
"We're on it."
